The transformation of the concept of an online degree, going from something much derided and often worthless, to a viable educational pathway, has had huge repercussions and has forever altered the way that we think about education. The ability to study anywhere at any time offers clear advantages for students. The extra time that is available to them should they choose to study part-time, means that an online degree is something that can be pursued while also working a job.

They also allow students to study while they travel, as long as you have an internet connection you can access course materials while on the move. Many courses only require a few days of actual attendance at a specific place a few times over the entire multi-year duration of the course. While this will vary between courses and subjects, in the case of the master of education in adult and continuing education (MEAD) degree, the vast majority of courses on offer are suitable for studying while on the move.

Studying while travelling is a radically different experience to studying at home, in some ways it is preferable, but in others it can present students with new challenges. In this article we offer some words of advice for those who are pursuing a MEAD degree while travelling in order to give students the best chance of success possible.

Time Management

Time management is an essential study skill no matter where you are or what you’re studying, however, while on the move, allocating enough time to your studies to make them a success requires a much more careful and considered approach. The best tools for managing a students’ time will vary from student to student, and there is no one technique or system which will work equally well for everyone.

Discipline

In general, whatever works for you while at home will also work here, but you need to exercise much more discipline in order to ensure that you are putting the necessary time in to it. If you find that writing out a timetable helps you, then try doing that, but remember to incorporate the time you will need to put aside for travelling from place to place. Studying an online MEAD degree requires more self-discipline than usual as unlike at school or college there won’t be anyone present to encourage you for the duration of your online mead program.

Keep Motivated

Planning your time and setting out a schedule is one thing, actually sticking to it is quite another. Self-motivation is a challenge for many of us and the usual temptation to procrastinate is still there. In fact, many students find that, while travelling, the desire to procrastinate is even stronger. This is understandable as most travelers would like to take time to explore their surroundings.

You will have to work out what motivational techniques work best for you, again, these will be broadly similar to the techniques that you employ back home. It is worth remembering that while travelling you can experience new things and you might find that rewarding yourself with a sampling of the local delicacies keeps you motivated.

Studying while traveling isn’t always easy, but it is an excellent way to make your studies more enjoyable and your vacations more rewarding.
