There’s something particularly romantic about a weekend getaway, especially when a snug hotel is added to the picture. Of course, it’s important to pick a hotel with the right kind of vibe—like an intimate bar and plush beds perfect for cosy cuddles. Throw in hypnotic wallpaper and a swanky cocktail bar and you get The Academy Hotel, a row of Georgian townhouses turned boutique hotel.

Situated in the heart of Bloomsbury, the building maintains its historic charm dating back 240 years and is replete with eclectic furniture throughout the lobby, bar and gorgeous guest rooms. The good thing is the hotel isn’t typically romantic in the overbearing sense of the word: it’s all about a modern and sophisticated romance, swapping the outlandish gifts and overpriced chocolates for a delicious bottle of red wine and a private patio purposefully positioned away from the hustle and bustle of Gower Street.

The rooms were designed by the New York-based, award-winning Champalimaud Design, offering a contemporary take on townhouse living. Then there’s what is actually in them: Nespresso machines, fresh fruit and dressing gowns; Aromatherapy Associates toiletries and a complimentary minibar. Grab a copy of the Small Luxury Hotels catalogue before hopping into the brand new and spacious marble shower for a refreshing revamp.

There’s an aura of literary prestige about the hotel largely owed to the Bloomsbury Set, an influential group of writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster who once called this part of London home in the early 20th century. This is especially the case in the Alchemy Bar, a secret gem that resembles a writer’s paradise—as much as a cosy corner for couples to get comfy and be wooed by the excellent choice of drinks on show. The drawing room is equally romantic in the poetic sense, brimming with beautiful books and furniture alike.

Though there isn’t a restaurant in the building, you and your loved one can enjoy a sumptuous and complimentary continental breakfast in the stylish refectory downstairs. The buffet is stocked with an array of pastries, cheeses, jams, real honeycomb and smoked salmon. An abundance of teas and coffees are available, though it’s likely you’ll be opting for a glass of champagne at the Alchemy Bar because a romantic weekend away from home isn’t complete without one.
