Hidden away in the beautiful St Martin’s Courtyard, Covent Garden is SUDA Thai Cafe & Restaurant, House of Coco sent our Lifestyle Writer, Helena, to try this little gem.
Winner of the Open Table Diners Choice Award 2014, SUDA is all about the greatest hits of Thai street food. The menu covers the classics including pad Thai, red and green curries and the more contemporary flavours and combinations that you might find today on the streets of Bangkok. Along with a concise list of martini, long cocktails and fresh smoothies.
The sleek exterior of SUDA is extremely inviting and you could almost mistake it for a cocktail bar, we were welcomed inside to a scent of Thai spices and couldn’t wait to get started with the meal. Commencing with a mango & papaya drop, Vodka shaken with mango purée & fresh papaya, hint of coriander leaf and fresh lime juice, garnished with sugar rim, extremely tasty and well-made, while deciphering the menu.
SUDA has an extensive menu which can be slightly confusing, along with photos of various items on the menu, which sadly doesn’t add the classiest touch or particularly help. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to choose from.We started off with a selection of small bites, Roti with Peanut sauce (which is more like a cracker and nothing like Busaba’s, however the peanut sauce is extremely tasty), chicken satay, vegetable spring rolls, and king prawns in an egg noodle wrap. It was perfectly satisfying and a nice alternative to dim sum. Alongside this, we ordered the Thai-style calamari, unfortunately there was nothing in the slightest bit “Thai” about this apart from the sweet chilli sauce, but still really appetising.
The main course we opted for a Gaeng Kiew Waan Gai, or Thai Green curry, SUDA claims to have the best outside of Thailand and Nua Yang Salad, beef sirloin salad. The salad was slightly disappointing, and definitely not as Thai or flavoursome as would’ve liked. The spicy curry easily made up for this.
All in all, we had a lovely meal and HoC would surely recommend passing by for lunch or dinner, for cocktails or for a small bite with a contemporary chilled out vibe and reasonable price. The service was friendly, although not the most attentive.
