After spending almost 3 months in the city that never sleeps, House of Coco Lifestyle Writer and self-entitled Dessert Queen, Helena, reported back to us with the must visit bakeries and sweet treats you have to bring your sweet tooth to whilst visiting New York City!
Prohibition Bakery is the genius idea of mixing cake and alcohol brought together by Brooke, a trained chef and Leslie, a baker and bartender inspired by the prohibition era. Let’s be honest, what can be better than boozy cupcakes! Located in the Lower East Side in a cute little shop underneath a tattoo parlour Helena met with Leslie to see what all the fuss was about!
The cupcakes have an alcoholic centre that’s injected into the mini cupcakes post-baking, ensuring there’s more of a kick and flavour. All of the alcoholic cocktails that go into the cakes are also made in-house, we made sure to try and test these too! With a menu that changes flavour constantly depending on the season you can never get bored.
Our favourites were the Birthday Cake, lemon, vodka and Frangelico and the Car Bomb, with whiskey, Bailey’s, stout and chocolate.
Now Leslie Feinberg and Brooke Siem have created a cookbook with more than 50 recipes in the Prohibition Bakery style adapted for home cooks. Organized by types of alcohol, Prohibition Bakery includes cupcake to suit everyone’s taste. It can be purchased from Amazon here.

Dominique Ansel, better known to us as the creator of the Cronut, named one of TIME magazine’s “25 Best Inventions”. Also maker of the chocolate chip cookie shot and frozen S’mores! The newly opened Dominique Ansel Kitchen, in the West Village doesn’t serve the Cronut nor many of the signature items, so you’ll have to visit the original Soho flagship bakery for that (and don’t even bother going after 1pm, it’ll be sold out!), but instead it features an idea even more radical – more than 70% of the menu is made, finished or assembled to order, reflecting Chef Dominique’s belief that “time is an ingredient.”
We had to get our hands on the DKA, the DKA is a caramelised croissant with a crispy shell and flaky interior. It was named one of Time Out New York’s 100 best dishes in 2012.
And if you have a little extra time whilst in New York, hidden within the 2nd floor of the new Dominique Ansel Kitchen is U.P. (short for “unlimited possibilities), Chef Dominique Ansel’s after-hours tasting table that launched in July. The exclusive U.P. table seats just 8 guests and descends from the ceiling into the center of the bakery’s prep kitchen. Guests will be served an 8-course, all-dessert tasting menu, complete with cocktail pairings.

If you’re going to spend a day touristing in Brooklyn you have to visit Robicelli’s Bakery. Coming to light to us after seeing their invention of the Nutellasagna everywhere we just had to go and see what they were all about! Run by a lovely couple, Allison and Matt both cute and real, Helena was invited down to a pie baking class run by Allison herself. With a variety of pies, brownies, cookies and cupcakes, they also offer a flavour of the month depending on the seasons, this includes Pumpkin Spice Latte and S’Mores cupcakes!
Unfortunately the Nutellasagna was sold out (goes VERY quickly), but we were happy to stumble across a completely new dessert which has become our new favourite, Chess Pie, which is a Southern classic sweet caramelised custard pie. We happily learned to bake, and will be attempting at home very soon.

Levain Bakery, where the chunky chocolate cookie food-porn photos have been floating around on our Instagram for far too long and we just had to go and get our hands on one! With a couple of locations in Manhattan we visited the cosy Harlem spot which is known for having tourists lining up outside to get their taste of the famous bakery. With four different cookie options along with bread and other pastries, Levain definitely doesn’t disappoint.
The six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie is on any foodie’s bucket list, the crunchy cookie with soft chocolate chips that melt as if it’s just come out of the oven is pure heaven! They also now have arranged for international shipping so going home you never have to be craving again.
