Earlier this week, Christian Louboutin announced that he was releasing an assortment of nail polish, the first products in his newly minted beauty line.
While some assumed that red lipstick would be his first product, nail polish is actually perfectly aligned with Louboutin tradition. Early in his career, the designer famously grabbed some nail polish from an assistant and painted the sole of a shoe he was working on to make it more vibrant. And thus, his signature was born. Now he speaks of a reversal of this, of “giving back to nails what the shoe took many years ago.”
Housed in a faceted glass bottle, Rouge Louboutin is topped with a dramatic “high heel” lid taking it to the same height (8 inches!) as the designer’s Ballerina Ultima shoes, created as part of a collaboration with David Lynch. Both are outlandishly impractical, but then practicality has never been the first objective of the man who claims to prefer artificial or “created” beauty more than natural.
September sees the range expand to include 30 new polishes grouped into Nudes, Noirs and Pops as well as base and top coats. The prices reflect the sheer decadence of the product – a single bottle costs £36 – but there is no denying that this is something that little bit different.
