Ideally, you should only become engaged (and therefore married) once, which means all of us wish for the perfect proposal, engagement, and wedding possible. Saying “I do” to the one we love is a momentous occasion, and not much will ever top it, so you’ll want to give your partner everything they’ve ever dreamt of and more. If you’re thinking about popping the question this year but are worried about doing it all wrong, follow this guide on how to bend down on one knee (or not!) and get the “yes” you’ve always anticipated.

Cater It to Your Partner (but also you)

Proposing to your partner is the ideal time to express not only your love for them but also a great way to show how much you know about them. Your proposal should be catered to their likes, bringing in their wants and desires; failure to do so could lead to embarrassment on both parts. For instance, if your partner is shy, do you think they’d truly enjoy a public proposal in a restaurant? Instead, you need to think more on a personal level. If they enjoy walking, then go for a walk around their favourite place. Then, when the moment is right, ask them the question. If they’re addicted to coffee, you could buy them a coffee plunger with the words “Will you marry me?” inscribed on the side. There are many fun and unique ways to ask them for their hand in marriage.

However, you also need to bear in mind that this is about you, too. Do not forget about your wants. If you really enjoy puzzles and you know that your partner does too, then come up with a treasure hunt that lead them to you; if you want to propose in front of your family and friends and you know your partner truly wouldn’t mind, then do this instead.

Get the Right Ring

You may know your partner through-and-through, but you may still stumble at the hurdle of selecting the correct ring to place on her finger. You may not want to ask them upfront on what rings or stones they like most. However, there are ways of finding out. Turn to the likes of their parents, or better yet, their friends. More often than not, they’ll know what stone to get, what cut and the colour of the band. If you’re completely unsure, you can always take one of their friends engagement shopping with you, so they can offer their guidance on special diamond engagement rings and the required size. If all else fails, you can always go engagement ring shopping with your fiancé once they’ve said yes.

Give Yourself Time

No one wants a rushed affair, and so you should take your time when putting the events in place. Usually, people go all out and methodically plan their proposals, hoping to impress their other half. If this is you, don’t feel pressured to put together a hasty proposal – especially if you’ve told friends and family and they’re hassling you to ‘just do it.’

Additionally, if you’re proposing abroad, it’s always best to look up where you’re proposing (in terms of location) and whether you need help organising your plans. For instance, if you’re hoping to have a somewhat private proposal but want to ask in a touristy location, then Google the quietest times of day.
