Anyone with a Pinterest account will tell you that home décor trends are usually fleeting, but Craftsman style appears to be the exception. The Craftsman movement was initially created to promote the efforts of early 20th century craftsmen and Oriental wooden architecture. At the time, it was a revolt against the industrial revolution; a celebration of all things made by hand rather than by machines.

Today, it feels as though we have gone full circle. With designers and DIY enthusiasts turning to the natural world to influence their interiors, many current trends offer more than just a nod to simpler times. Sufficed to say, the warmth and purity of the artisan movement are still celebrated today – as are the timeless homes and furniture pieces of the era.

Commonly referred to as “Craftsman style,” the American movement of architecture and design uses natural, ethical products, rich colours and creative details, all of which can be incorporated into your home to give it a cosy and natural feel. Here are three tips to help you introduce Craftsmanship into your home decor.

Natural Interiors

Craftsman-style interiors bring the outside in, symbolising our unity with the natural world. Interior wood is never painted; instead, the features display natural staining and shine. You may not be able to (or want to) swap out all your cabinetry, railings, floors and walls for wood, but that doesn’t mean you can’t mimic the Craftsman style. If you own your own home and you’re thinking of renovating, think, exposed beams and rails, wooden joinery and decorative supports.

If you’re renting, you can emulate the Craftsman style with rustic wooden coffee tables, simple wood cabinets with minimal ornamentation, and wooden tables and chairs. You can complement the natural wood tones by placing lots of plants and greenery around the home. Invest in pieces from modern carpenters rather than buying from home stores if you can.

Glass Details

Glass details like pendant lights and stained glass windows were typical of the Craftsman movement. Cabinets and cupboards with glass inserts to offset the rich wood tones were also popular, as were partially paned doors and multi-pane windows. To bring the Craftsman style into your home, consider swapping out your front door for a bespoke Craftsman one, or give your windows some extra character by getting them replaced with multi-panes.

Symmetry

If you’re the sort of person who needs pictures to hang straight and furniture to be perfectly positioned, then the simple, wide-open layouts of Craftsman homes will probably appeal to you. Symmetry is present in most Craftsman features, including the windows, doors, stone details and layouts.

Earthy Colors

Craftsman homes are usually painted with natural, earthy colours like greens and browns. This was to allow the low-profile home exteriors to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. In addition to these muted tones, contrasting colours were often used to highlight a home’s best features. So, if the time has come to renovate your home’s exterior, consider painting the outside of your house in an earthy, natural shade and emphasising trims and decorative supports with a contrasting colour.
