Creative Spotlight : Marcela Solana

MARCELA SOLANA is an artist and designer from Guadalajara, Mexico. Known for using mainly acrylic in her paintings she creates bold and almost hypnotic works portraying intricate images of everyday objects.

Here, she tells us more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I started painting in 2014 and had always wanted to build my own business. I just never thought that as an artist, I could create a brand for it; I was wrong! There is a short story on my website as to how a little drawing of a rhino led the way for me as an artist.

What´s your background?
I majored in Global Design at a university in my hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. I then took a 4-month graphic design course at PARSONS: The New School in NYC.  I had my mind set on Graphic design even though I’d been working on several projects around interior design as well. One day, after the “Rhino” story happened, my life took a quick turn and suddenly I was entering the world of art.  Little did I know I had this hidden talent. That’s when I decided to take several art courses at Central Saint Martin’s and Chelsea College of Arts in London. The funny thing is, if 5 years back you had asked me if I saw myself as an artist or if I liked painting, my answer would have been NO. I guess life has bigger plans for all of us, we just have to let go.

What is the purpose behind your work?
My mission is that each piece of art gives you an escape from the problems and difficulties of daily life. That at least for a moment, you find a ray of light, peace and colour in your life.  If I can bring you at least one smile, that means everything to me. What breaks my heart the most is to see a world filled with hatred and pain. The world needs more light, more colour, and more love … in every way.

Which of your qualities, you think, inclined you towards painting?
I am a very positive, creative and optimistic woman. I think these three qualities were important to developing my style. At the same time, I’m very patient and I am a bit of a perfectionist which I think is well represented in my meticulous work.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Honestly no, so far everything has been great; slow but steady is my motto. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and my business has been unfolding in a way I only dreamed about!

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The hardest part is always to get new customers to believe in you and get them to follow your work. My brand has been growing organically which is a slower way to do it, but at the same time I think it’s a good way to gain lifelong customers.

2019 is almost here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Lately everything has been moving so fast that, to be honest, I don’t know where life will take me or my brand. I just hope I get to reach as many countries, people and hearts as possible. I would love to have new projects unfold and be able to share them with the world.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Life hasn’t always been an easy road, in fact, three years back I had the toughest year of my life so, getting to this point where I am being recognised internationally is pretty unbelievable. There is nothing more gratifying than having people value and enjoy my work. Everything I create, I do it for the world to see.  When people see my work, their expressions and reactions are priceless. If I can bring a smile to your face or brighten your day, that means everything to me.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
It’s funny because I have lived in both NYC and London and each one has a special place in my heart. However, after having the chance to experience both deeply I have to say LONDON! I just love the vibe, the architecture, the food, the pubs… what’s not to love really? And people there are very polite and friendly, which I love as well.

Style means….?
Style means expressing your own, unique sense of self.

Best thing about London to you?
There’s so much to do and take advantage of in such a beautiful city!

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
Well, I am VERY MUSICAL; I’m always either singing or listening to music. I love dancing too. A LOT. It’s my other passion. I love sports and working out on a daily basis as well. All of these help me clear my mind and reset on busy days.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
It depends on my day and my mood. One of my favourites is a small gold and colourful purse from “Purificación García” that just brings the perfect pop of colour to any plain ensemble.

Favourite love song?
Since I am a song lover and a hopeless romantic, I have several. “Sleeping to Dream” by Jason Mraz (he’s got so many great love songs), “Beautiful Crazy” by Luke Combs and “Amazed” by Lonestar.

Best place for a coffee?
There is a hidden little spot in the East Village in NYC, “B CUP”.  I love that place! Every time I go back to the city, it’s A MUST!

Guilty pleasure?
Every chick-flick; I have seen a bunch and I’m not even ashamed hahaha. some of them are really bad, but I watch them on those days I want to just chill.

If you could spend 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I have always wanted to visit Tokyo, that would be a good place! Although I would need more than 24 hours. Or Iceland to see the northern lights, that is currently on my bucket list!
