SAMAYA is an all-natural skincare brand based on Ayurvedic principles, which helps you achieve samadosha or a ‘perfect balance’ in your life, beginning with your skin. It combines two Sanskrit words: sama, ‘balance’ and alaya, ‘place’ to create a ‘place of balance’.
We were intrigued to hear more so we went behind the brand to find out more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I launched the brand in autumn 2016. Having been born and brought up in India, I was surrounded by Ayurveda and natural remedies. My grandmother was a big influence as she fostered in me a passion for herbal beauty from a very early age. From the age of six or seven I have been mixing face packs with Ayurvedic ingredients! When I moved abroad life got busier and I looked for readymade products that were all-natural and Ayurvedic but also easy and pleasant to use. As I could not find what I was looking for, I decided to create a natural range that delivered functional benefits while providing holistic wellness.
What’s your background?
The relevant part of my background includes an internship for the Head of Skincare at Unilever in India while I was at Harvard Business School earning my MBA. That is when I realised that I could develop my own range. A year later I moved to London and my first job was with Origins, the Estee Lauder Brand to get some experience in the beauty world. Very quickly I understood that there was an opportunity on the market for a brand like SAMAYA so I left to start saving up for my own venture by working in classic strategy roles which is what I was trained to do at Harvard.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The hardest challenge has been trying to maintain an appropriate work-life balance because it is very difficult to ‘switch off’ when it is your own baby.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I am a proud mother of two wonderful daughters. Both are very supportive of SAMAYA and are my unofficial PR team!
2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
We are already in ten retailers but this is just a start, albeit a very good one. I hope to grow the brand from strength to strength via new product development as well as by making it accessible to as many consumers as possible.
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Seeing SAMAYA’s stunning window on New Bond Street four months from launch! Fenwick Bond Street have given SAMAYA its very own window display for six weeks and it is definitely worth a look. Their merchandising team is very creative and has a great aesthetic.
Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
At this stage in my life, I would have to say London. This is where I have put down my roots, where I am bringing up my children and where I created SAMAYA. The city has the perfect mix of creative and cultural vibrancy and green spaces. I feel truly fortunate to be able to call London home.
In my twenties, it was definitely New York and I am grateful for many wonderful years in Manhattan. Paris is a romantic city and we are lucky to be able to travel there in a couple of hours from London. While I have many special memories from Paris, London is definitively home.
Style means bringing your unique aesthetic to every facet of your life – from your clothes to your home and everything in between to create your ‘signature’ which influences and is reflected in all your choices.
