Specialising in photo shoots, film, wedding, commercial, corporate and special occasion makeup, Louise is passionate and professional when it comes to her work. She prides herself on being a perfectionist making sure none of her clients are left unsatisfied.
She began to feel frustrated at not being able to give her clients a lipstick to take away with them, it was whilst having dinner with a friend in Byron Bay one night in February 2015 that they found a solution to this problem; create a whole new lipstick line and it exactly one year later that The Goddess Rage of Lou Lou Lips was launched.
Louise is a true #girlboss and we couldn’t wait to hear more. Here, she chats about the brand, her plans for the future and more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I launched Lou Lou Lips in February 2016. I’ve always found that applying a lipstick at the completion of my own makeup can alter my entire mood for the day. It can give me so much confidence, I want to help other women feel the same.
What’s your background?
I’ve been a freelance makeup artist for 5 years working on fashion photo shoots, film shoots and also with personal clients. I always found lipstick to be the tricky part with any appointment, I didn’t like telling clients to buy a lipstick and bring it with them and I also didn’t like having to buy a lipstick for them hoping they’d like the one I chose. This is part of the reason why I started Lou Lou Lips, so that I would have a whole range of lipsticks to offer my clients.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
It’s mostly just me at this stage! I have my sister helping out with the packaging design stuff which is amazing! My parents also help with business advice. I’m so blessed to have such a supportive family.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
It’s still pretty young and only turned 1 just over a month ago! (woohoo) so I’m still learning every day. I believe there will always be things you should have done differently but that’s the beauty of it – realising these things and applying them in the future to help the business grow.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The hardest challenged I have faced so far is probably learning to communicate with my manufacturer overseas. I’d never done something like this before and never done a course to learn how to approach business with overseas manufactures. Luckily one of my best friends has her own lingerie label (Kat the label, check it out if you don’t know it. They are the most beautiful lingerie pieces you will ever see!) so she helped me understand the way it works which I am so grateful for!
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I also love acting! I started classes from a young age and studied it full time in 2012.
2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
First things first, I will be bringing out a new range this year! 7 new beautiful colours with a whole new message behind them! Stay tuned!
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
The highlight for me is definitely being featured in ELLE UK! something I would never have imagined would happen in my first year. It was also the feminist issue of ELLE so that was a bonus as my brand is all about empowering women.
Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I absolutely love London, however I have never been to New York and have always wanted to go. So either London or New York… I’ll get back to you once I’ve been…
Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
- A Lou Lou Lips lipstick
- I’m currently loving spritzing myself with my Gypsy Water perfume by Byredo before I leave the house
- Wearing an SPF, weather it be under my makeup of in a tinted moisturizer, I’m loving the Mecca Cosmetica “To Save Face” SPF 50 sunscreen and also their “In a Good Ligh”t tinted moisturizer
Confidence and backing yourself.
Best thing about Melbourne to you?
The art and culture.
Statement shoe or statement bag?
Neither. I’m not much of a shoe or bag person, I usually stick with the one bag for a while and I hardly ever buy new shoes. I’m going to go with statement makeup.
If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
My Kat “Maverick” bra, so comfortable and sexy!
Favourite love song?
“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac
Best place for a coffee?
Las Chicas in Carlisle St, Balaclava, Melbourne
Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
The most memorable piece of advice I’ve been given is It doesn’t matter how slow you go, just don’t stop.
Cheese and red wine!
If you could spend 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Right now I’d love to go to New York.
In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
In the future I will be bringing out new ranges of lipsticks as well as expanding to other lip products such as lip crayons, liquid lipsticks etc.
