Coco Business Inspiration : K&N Ventures

Kathy is a digital artist who lives in Connecticut with her husband of 20 years and three kids.  For Custom art pieces she is your go to girl.  More than just a wife and mother, she is a creative who produces work that is bound to make you smile.
Here, she chats to us at House of Coco to tell us more about the brand and her plans for the future…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
K&N Ventures was originally launched as an app company back in 2009 but I grew into digital design in 2016 and switched completely to just design in Jan 2017. I found that creating digital paintings was incredibly therapeutic and when people I knew were so impressed with my designs I decided to upload them and create an online store.

What’s your background?
My degree is a Bachelors of Science in Human Services, which would have lead me down the path to becoming a counsellor. However I soon felt myself pulled in the direction of entrepreneurship and more specifically careers that involved being able to physically create the designs that kept popping up in my mind.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
I am the sole owner and creator of all the designs. I design something new each day and I love it!

Ideally I wish I could find a large company that would simple take me on board and let me continually create for them but for now I upload my designs onto multiple products (apparel, home décor accessories, electronic cases, Wall Art and more) and let people chose what they like best. My totes have proven very popular as has my wall art.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
To be honest I can’t think of anything, as it’s a journey of growth. The designs I create today are so different from when I first started and that’s not something you can really predict or practice..that’s just growing into your artistic ability.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Strangely enough it’s been trying to explain to people what I do. I’ve had people ask me where I get my art from as I couldn’t possibly create such diverse and beautiful pieces.  I was at first rather insulted but in a way it’s a compliment too. I just told them that I do in fact create all my own work and the fact that it’s a floral one-day and an abstract the next is just reflective of my mood that day. I paint what is inside my mind that moment. I never know how a piece will look when finished until it is.  Many people don’t understand that digital painting is still painting but just using a different medium.  I read somewhere someone said; “If you type up a poem instead of writing it by hand that doesn’t make the work of art any less significant or lovely”.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I’m entirely self taught and didn’t discover I had this ability until this past year.

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
As far as it can go!

As I said earlier I hope to one day find a company that is compatible with my designs and to form a collaboration of some sort. I’d like to focus entirely on creating.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
To be asked to be in the fashion issues of three major UK magazines. I’m still flabbergasted they all liked the art on my tote bags so much they reached out to me. It’s such a huge honour.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I’d have to say London even though I’m from Connecticut in the United States my husband was born and raised in England and it has a special place in my heart.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
My coloured chapstick, I love it so much that when the company stopped making this colour I went online and bought out as much of the stock as I could!

My face cream

My black eyeliner

Style means….?
What you choose to define it as. It’s a personal statement of who you feel you are. It’s not a simple definition that works for everyone the same. That’s the beauty of style, you define it.

Best thing about London to you?
The rich history. I’m a big history buff and I’m always fascinated to walk in the same places as major historical figures and where important historical events have taken place.

Favourite love song?
“Say you won’t let go” by James Arthur

Best place for a coffee?
Any place that is part coffee bar- part book store.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
In life you are always either up a ladder or down a shoot so when you are down a shoot just hang on a ladder will soon appear and if you’re up a ladder appreciate it because at some point a shoot will come.

Guilty pleasure?
Hot fudge sundae with extra hot fudge!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A romantic bed and breakfast Inn with my husband.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
I am completely open to new ideas, who knows where this will lead but I do ultimately hope to join with a like minded company that allows me to create for their clients/customers.
