Candice Norris is the owner of Candid Owl, a business dedicated to providing functional lampshades with an added wow factor! The company has grown significantly since its creation in 2015 and now supplies lampshades to homes and businesses across the UK & EU. Candice personally uses striking metallic and contrasting fabric interiors to handcraft bold, statement lampshades. Her collections showcase a variety of colours and styles to suit all tastes and bespoke order enquiries are always welcome.

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I moved into a new home back in 2015 and really struggled to source a large statement lampshade for my lounge – that’s when I realised that I could use a DIY lampshade kit to make one myself. I still own that first shade now, a lovely bold floral design by Dashwood Studio.
I absolutely loved creating that first shade and that’s when I discovered that I could select and create some bold and unique shades to offer to individuals like myself, people looking for a unique lampshade to enhance their homes.
What’s your background?
I’ve always loved creating things from scratch, right back to Art and Design Textiles at school. However, my work background has been a HR professional for many years, right up until last year when I made the decision to take a career break after having my daughter. Candid Owl is now a full time role for me and is going from strength to strength.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
My partner plays a huge role, assisting me in all areas of the business and around his own work commitments at Jaguar Land Rover. I’m also in the process of training a member of staff who will assist me in making the shades; this will free up some of my time to concentrate on exciting new designs.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
No I don’t think I would – I’ve grown the business slowly and steadily and learnt some really invaluable lessons along the way!
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
That I’m a complete magpie when it comes to fabric – if it’s bright and pretty then I have to have it! I try to hold myself back nowadays due to space constraints.
2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
This year has already been a big year for Candid Owl; I’ve had a strong presence on the online marketplaces for the last 18 months or so but felt it was important to have my own website. This was launched in February and has been a big hit already. I’ve had some really positive feedback on both the shades and the customer service – there isn’t really any more I could ask for! I’ll be concentrating on building a stronger online presence throughout the year and I’m thrilled to be exhibiting at Kirstie Allsopp’s Handmade Fair at Ragley Hall later on this month.
Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Hmm, it would have to be my Estee Lauder Double Wear Mascara, a fruity lip balm and some L’Occitane Hand Cream – making lampshades plays havoc with your hands.
Simple but chic.
Statement shoe or statement bag?
Best place for a coffee?
I’m definitely not a coffee fan – it has to be a hot chocolate everytime!
Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Just trust your instincts and don’t overthink things. I try and follow that in all areas of my life.
If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
It would have to be Las Vegas
In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
I’ll be concentrating on advertising in the coming months, particularly the website. However, I have some very unique designs planned for the Autumn/Winter.
