Coco Business Inspiration : Alluvian

Since 2015, Alluvian has done more than refine an old tradition: They’ve started a new one. Guided by the love of natural skincare, the ocean, travel and endurance, Alluvian manufactures small batch aquatic botanical soap and grooming products in central Illinois.  Drawing from traditional practices and enhancing with organic and geologic elements, this transformative collection of body products is well suited for modern society.

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
Alluvian was launched back in 2014 to provide a premium, sustainable line of grooming and personal care products geared toward men.  Growing up near the Great Lakes and seeing the immense beauty and resources they provide has instilled a drive to preserve and protect our aquatic ecosystems. I wanted to create a brand that not only offers naturally effective formulations with unique organic and geologic ingredients, but also actively reduces the plastic footprint associated with daily grooming.

Whats your background?
My background is science based, being actively involved in the biotech industry for over 5 years. Holistic and sustainable reservations, as well as a Bachelors from Michigan State University in Environmental Biology and Microbiology, has helped shape the Alluvian brand philosophy and product offerings.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
We are a growing startup.   I have collaborated with local resources to help shape areas of the brand outside of my expertise.  Right now we are expanding our business and ambassador associates to foster new partnerships. I continue to look for employees who bring unique skill sets, innovation, and a drive for a healthier world to our growing company.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
While building and operating a startup, continued learning, adaptation, and feedback is essential for success.  Looking back, if I could change anything, I would say ensuring I had the right tech/web development resources in place, especially for a more e-commerce derived platform. He or She needs to be someone you can call in an instant to fix an issue as well as offer the most efficient path for your present needs.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
I would say bootstrapping my company.  Alluvian has been a company built from my own financial endeavors. It reinforces my strong belief in the philosophy and mission of the company. Like a gambler, I’m “All in.” I continue to take the necessary personal financial risks with the knowledge that creating and sharing this brand and message is important in our modern society.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I am an Eagle Scout.  One concept that really stuck with me was to leave a place better than you found it.

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
This year is off to an exciting start.  We look to not only expand regionally with our line but also make new partnerships internationally.  Currently we are in conversations with companies in the Netherlands, UAE, Australia, and the UK.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
I would say partnering with the non-profit 5 Gyres.  The 5 Gyres aim to impact the problem of plastic pollution through education, activism, and adventure.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
After last months visit to London, I can say I feel most at home there. There is just so many connections with different cultures, food, and living that makes London such a wonderful place.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
With it being winter, I would have to say our Auxilio Facial Oil really is a necessity. Really protects against harsh winds and drying weather.  Our Natural Deodorant for obvious reasons. Lastly, I have been loving a cologne called Big Sur by Juniper Ridge.  Truly great products.

Style means….?
Non-verbal expression through textiles and accessories.

Best thing about London to you?
I consider myself a foodie with a love for curries.  London offers some authentic, robust, and aromatic dishes.

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
I have a cardigan from Iceland that doesn’t scream Icelandic sweater, but offers dark colours, detail, and soft wool that never fails to get a compliment.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Chase whatever it is we look up to, value, look forward to, and want to accomplish.  Chase the person you want to be 10 years from now.

Guilty pleasure?
Ibérico Dry Cured Ham and 16 year old Aberlour.

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
From the places I have been, and it being winter right now where I’m at, I would have to say Lake Garda, Italy.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
Influence, partnerships, and continuing to hit a chord with our demographic.  Alluvian wants to be your choice for highly effective, unique, and plastic-free grooming products.
