Where has this month gone? One minute we were sad about the demise of September and *bang* before we knew it, it’s pretty much Bonfire Night. We even missed out on celebrating one of our favourite national events, Gin and Tonic Day (October 19th). If you missed out too – firstly, mark it in your 2018 calendar – and secondly, grab that bottle of Bombay Sapphire, you’re going to need it!

Pear & Ginger G&T

50ml Bombay Sapphire Gin

15ml pear juice

¼ fresh lime squeeze

100ml tonic water

Ginger slice, lime wedge & sage leaf

  • Fill a balloon glass with cubed ice in order to cool it, and keep the liquid as cold as possible
  • Build the drink over the ice, start by adding BOMBAY SAPPHIRE, followed by the pear juice and squeeze fresh lime, stir with a cocktail stirrer
  • Add tonic gently in to glass
  • Garnish with a slice of ginger, lime wedge and sage leaf
  • DRINK!

If this all feels like too much hard work, here’s our top gin bar recommendations from across the country who all created special Bombay Sapphire drinks for G&T Day and if you ask super nicely may just whip one up for you – CHEERS!

Another theme we hear amongst our tribe of #GirlBosses is the importance of building your networks. This #TeamCoco writer was at a Start Up event on Monday in a room full of 20 other entrepreneurs from totally different industries and came away with a potential mentor, an American food truck to collaborate with and the intel on a new dessert-only bar coming soon.

As the speaker at that event said the “loose connections” you make (the people that aren’t your friends or in your usual circles) are often the best; you can open yourself up to completely new circles and new opportunities!

In this week’s workout we share five of our favourite places to grow your networks. We challenge you to try out one of the below, make some connections and give us some feedback on twitter through @House_Of_Coco .

  • EventbriteOkay so this isn’t a place but we challenge you to spend an hour (do it on the bus, now!) delving into the treasure trove that is Eventbrite searching for events that speak to you. Search ‘Start Up’ if you are a budding entrepreneur, ‘Fashion’ if you just want to hear more about the industry. You get the gist, right? Then do the same with Meet Ups.
  • Flock Flock is a “global marketplace built on collaboration” run by total #GirlBoss Emma Sexton. Check out their site and social channels for events in London and an incredible group of entrepreneuers are travelling to New York next month for global networking. How amazing is that?
  • Social media So this might sound weird but online is a fantastic place to make professional friends. Think of all the amazing small brands out there who are being run by one amazing soul. That amazing soul will, most likely, be doing all the marketing themselves. Follow their channels and interact, who knows where it might lead. As a starter for ten we recommend following the brilliant Escape the City.
  • Ask AroundCheck our local and industry specific events by simply googling or ask the people you meet through steps 1 and 3 where they go for inspo. You can never go to too many events or meet too many new people! For instance, this #TeamCoco writer is based in London but wanted to offer some shout outs to groups outside of London and asked the rest of the crew for their recommendations and found out about Forward Ladies .
  • Don’t forget about the boys! Yes we are #GirlBosses and feminists but let’s not be narrow minded, okay? Make sure you don’t just stick to women only events, you are excluding the amazing people that exist in the other half of the population! And from one Girl Boss to another, a male entrepreneur really enjoys talking to a badass female one. An easy place to find mixed events is to look at the shared working spaces near you and see what they’ve got going on. Quite often people like Virgin Start Ups and Enteprise Nation will run events in spaces like these, often with wine…

Now we’ve shared our trade networking secrets, tell us yours! Sharing is caring…

Love fashion and travel? A trip to Rotterdam to visit the hottest exhibition in town – Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years’ is an absolute must.

This incredible exhibition celebrates the wonderful collaboration between Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, who together over the last 25 years have captured the imagination of the fashion world whilst pushing the boundaries between fashion and art.

Curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, the exhibition of uncompromising beauty, takes place at the renowned Kunsthal in the heart of Rotterdam. Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years’ shows Viktor&Rolf’s radical conception of ‘wearable art’ and explores the elements that has made their designs truly unique in the contemporary fashion world.

Visitors can expect to see around sixty works from Viktor&Rolf’s haute couture collections on display, many of which are on rotating dummies. The exhibition provides a true insight into their unconventional and conceptual approach, their creativity and interplay of lines, volumes, bows, collars, ruffles and more.

Highlights include creations from some of their most iconic collections such as Van Gogh Girls, Wearable Art, Bedtime Story, The Fashion Show and Cutting Edge Couture. There are also some amazing never-seen-before pieces from their latest collection on display too – Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2017), Action Dolls (2017/18) and Surreal Satin (2018).

Fans of Madonna will be thrilled to see the outfit that Viktor&Rolf designed for her 2016 benefit concert at the Miami Art Basel. You can also see the wedding gown that Viktor&Rolf designed for Princess Mabel van Oranje-Nassau in 2004.

The exhibition also includes 25 handmade examples from Viktor&Rolf’s ‘Dolls’ series which consists of replicas of antique dolls dressed in some of the fashion artists’ most iconic designs. Each porcelain doll is dressed in an haute couture creation that was exactly scaled-down based on the original patterns, a meticulous and extremely labour-intensive process. Even the fabrics have been woven to scale, and the miniature model’s hair and make-up are exact copies of the runway styles.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (Viktor&Rolf) graduated in 1992 from ArtEz Institute in Arnhem (The Netherlands). In 1993 they won the first three prizes of the most important fashion competition in the world: Le Salon Européen des Jeunes Stylistes in Hyères (France). From 1994, they started to present their haute couture collections as installations, mainly in art galleries, until 1998 when they presented their first haute couture collection. In 2000, they launched their ready-to-wear line for women, until 2013, to focus only on haute couture since then.

In 2005 they developed their first perfume called ‘Flowerbomb’; the following years they successfully introduced the additional fragrances ‘Bonbon’,’Spicebomb’ and ‘Magic’. Their work is included in numerous Dutch and international museum collections and is worn by famous artists such as Tilda Swinton, Tori Amos and Rufus Wainwright. In 2016- 17, the exhibition titled ‘Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists’ was presented at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne followed in 2018 by its adaptation to celebrate the duo’s 25th anniversary exhibition at Kunsthal Rotterdam.

#TeamCoco had the pleasure of being invited to the press preview yesterday (Friday 25th May) and we can confirm that it is spectacular and a truly fitting tribute to Viktor&Rolf. Take a look at some of the wonderful pieces from the exhibition below.

Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years opens to the public today and closes on 30th September.

Food should be celebrated in every form and vegan food in London is looking especially delicious these days, with more plant based offerings than ever before, however one thing which is always a challenge to sniff out is a truly great vegan pastry…

Offering a unique vegan twist on French patisseries favourites, there is a new kid on the block, which promises to be one of the most exciting vegan spots yet. Forget heavy, sugar laden desserts with a tactical sprinkling of carrot and enter, light and delicate patisseries which are vegan through and through.

La Suite West hotel in Bayswater has been a vegan focused location for many years, and its restaurant has as a result always been focused around a vegan friendly offering. However with the help of Head Chef Clarisse Flon, a speciality vegan chef, they have created a truly unique and contemporary alternative to traditional French patisserie and developed a full vegan menu spanning breakfast lunch and afternoon tea and most importantly all day dessert. The launch of London’s first vegan French patisserie is here.

In addition to incredible patisserie options, the menu offering showcases unique, delicate and delicious vegan cuisine including a full English breakfast with seasonal fresh vegetables, avocado on freshly baked sourdough bread and homemade brioche.

French toast with creamy vegan yoghurt and roasted strawberries. Visually stimulating and creative, citrus smoked ‘salmon’ and pomegranate salad – with the ‘salmon’ created from carrot and mouth-watering vegan interpretations of strawberry tarts topped with fresh strawberries push the boundaries to create truly mouth watering options.

With the festive season approaching this is the ideal place for vegans and non vegans alike to enjoy an incredible seasonal feast. Tackle the festive season with a delicious Nut Wellington with gravy and mash potatoes, truffle polenta with wild mushrooms and chestnut and caramel apple yule log with red currant coulis and additional options for gluten free dining, there really is something for everyone. With World Vegan Month coming up in November, this is just the veganning! #sorrynotsorry.

Cha Cha Mayfair is a new seafood bar and restaurant at Mercato Metropolitano in the Grade I St Mark’s Church, Mayfair, right in the heart of central London. With a mix of stained glass windows, grilled octopus with salsa verde and lashings of fiery margaritas…it truly is a religious experience.

A Fusion of Mediterranean Seafood and Exotic Cocktails

Cha Cha Mayfair is the latest in a series of exciting new openings for the Initiative Group and combines eclectic cocktails with fresh Mediterranean seafood. With a prime position overlooking the entirety of the food market, Cha Cha’s bar is surrounded by beautiful church windows and has an open seafood kitchen so you can watch the expert chefs at work.

New dishes from the expertly curated menu include the mouthwatering lobster and crab roll with horseradish sauce and the grilled octopus with salsa verde. Larger seafood platters to share with friends are also on offer such as ‘The Carmen’ (£25) which includes rock oysters, king prawns, lobster and langoustine as well as ‘The Sergio’ (£20) which includes scallops, rock oysters, palourde clams and blue mussels. The staff are passionate about serving up the best cocktails in town and are committed to sourcing the best spirits for each drink. We sampled the fresh Cha Cha Margarita as well as the fruity El Dorado (ideal for the vodka lover). The bar was buzzy, the drinks were zesty and the food was unbelievable. We had the best seats in the house.

A Hub of Sustainable Dining and Culinary Innovation

At its heart, Cha Cha’s ethos is defined by responsible sourcing, enforcing a zero-waste policy and being mindful of the way in which they consume products. This is also in keeping with the values of Mercato Metropolitan whose mission is focused on using fresh, artisan and sustainably sourced ingredients as much as possible. In addition to Cha Cha, the church space has two levels of food stalls and bars which are accompanied by a rooftop terrace, whilst the vaulted crypt basement hosts an authentic wine cellar with fresh cuts and world cheeses, a micro-brewery, events and cookery classes for everybody to gather, learn and share. Cha Cha Mayfair is just one of the many exciting developments in the pipeline of the Initiative Group. Over the next year, expect to see the following setting up around the country:

  • Cha Cha at Eden Locke (Edinburgh): All-day casual dining and drinks,
  • Taco by Cha Cha (London): Tacos bar and drinks

Can you feel it in the air? Now that dreaded January is out of the way our thoughts have turned to springtime, booking holidays and Valentine’s Day. If you haven’t given a thought as to what to buy your other half, bestie or maybe even yourself, don’t fret; #TeamCoco have got your back. One of our favourite Valentine’s gifts this year is the gorgeous macaron box from Pierre Hermé Paris, the 4th most influential French person in the World according to Vanity Fair. We caught up with him to talk passion, trends, anime and, of course, the city of love itself, Paris!.. .

.

HOC: Hello Pierre, so great to meet you – we remember stomping around Paris in the rain looking for your shop on Rue Bonaparte before you opened in London. We can believe you are the World’s Best Pastry Chef! Can you tell us a little about what’s hot in pastry this year, what should we be looking out for?

PM: To be very honest, I’m not concerned about trends – I have never looked for them or followed them, I let only my inspirations guide me and I listen only to my own creative instinct. My only concern is taste! I find myself often asking myself the question, “is it good enough?”, does it taste good? Am I satisfied with what I’ve created? These are important questions that I can think about for seconds, weeks or sometimes years!

At Pierre Hermé Paris, our mission is to offer connoisseurs a unique experience in taste, sensations and pleasure. This year we have a lot of surprises in store – from the “Les Jardins” 2017 collection with some exceptional and rare ingredients and techniques, to the Easter collection, focusing on two artistic tributes and exceptional Grands Crus Pure Origin chocolates, to the latest “Fetish Macaron” launching in boutique for the first time at the end of April…

So, what to look out for: the selection of top-notch ingredients, attention to detail, creativity and innovation!

HOC: Sounds incredible, we can’t wait! In addition to how great everything tastes, we love how everything looks. Could you tell us about how the current collaboration with Nicolas Buffe came about?

PM: I met Nicolas Buffe at an exhibition, he is an exceptional artist. We launched the collaboration in February 2016 and it will end with the Valentine’s Day collection for 2017. It has been a truly unprecedented collaboration for the Maison Pierre Hermé Paris, with a story, various activations and creations being revealed across different markets and across the year. We gave Nicolas free reign and it led to the creation of a unique universe – a saga calling on ancestral myths, manga culture, as well as Renaissance and Baroque art. You can have a glimpse of it via the exclusive interactive adventure we released last October on www.pierrehermenicolasbuffe.com. (Editor’s note: we recommend checking it out, it’s stunning!)

Although unprecedented in terms of scope, this type of collaboration is part of a tradition at Pierre Hermé Paris and is part of the brand DNA. Having my work dialogue with those of other artists is extremely important to me and a very interesting way to work. Whether it be with painters, sculptors, musicians, perfume designers, architects or other…what motivates me in the first place and most importantly is the desire to create ideas with people working in different areas, different crafts, different universes. Every month, my business partner, Charles, and I invite several artists for a breakfast or lunch. It is a very unique experience, as we meet with people whose work is of particular interest to us, it is always full of surprises and creates a lot of good energy.

HOC: This idea of dialogue is really intriguing. How did this play out for this collaboration?

PM: In this type of collaboration, an exchange is always established and there is a mutual learning, it is a truly enriching way to work.

For example, the story created by Nicolas is inspired by the Pierre Hermé Paris universe, the robot Athanor 3 has a sweet tooth and is fanatical about macarons, the Fairground Gardens are inspired by the Parc Monceau, my favourite park in Paris and just a stone’s throw away from my Atelier de Création and if you look carefully in the drawings there are many references to macarons, cakes and other gourmandises!

Working with Nicolas or with other artists gives me another point of view, another vision on my work and can always inspire new ideas.

HOC: The artwork is so romantic, manga-esque and steampunk; we love it. We love that the story is romantic but not soppy, more a Ghibli fairytale! How was the story created?

PM: The style is Nicolas – he belongs to a generation that has been influenced by Japanese culture, references further enriched through his studies with classics from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. When we started to work together, each time we met, we came up with more and more ideas.

The idea of the Interactive Adventure online came quite naturally from his style and our desire to create something innovative, a new way of communicating and interacting with our clients. It was very well received and was awarded with three awards: a Silver EPICA Awards – Digital, a “Site of the Day” Awwwards and an Emerald Cristal – Digital.

HOC: Let’s get back to your art, your treats! If someone has never tried one, what would you recommend and why?

PM: It’s a difficult choice! In our boutiques, there are four signature flavours: Mogador – milk chocolate and passion fruit, one of the most iconic flavour associations, Infiniment Rose, Infiniment Caramel and Infiniment Chocolat Paineiras. For a newcomer, this might be the best place to start!

The other macarons change according to the seasons and some only last for a limited time only – like the Jardin de Lima (lucuma & candied ginger) – currently in the boutique in London and part of the 2017 “Les Jardins” collection – not to be missed!

Once the choice has been made, it is important that the macarons are tasted at room temperature – not eaten straight from the fridge. I mostly drink water or tea with macarons and it is important to take a generous bite in order to fully experience the different elements and architecture of taste.

HOC: A great tip! Finally, as our readers love to travel; where should they eat when they visit Paris this year?

PM: In Paris, one of my favourite restaurants remains Le Baratin, a small bistro in the 20th arrondissement where the owner and self-taught chef Raquel Carena uses remarkable ingredients. It is a place with real soul, offering hearty cuisine and an excellent choice of local wines. Other favourites include Akrame’s restaurant for a dose of pure creativity or Pierre Sang on Gambey, perfectly orchestrated with Korean influences.

With that we wrapped up our inspiring chat with M. Pierre Hermé and headed straight to his boutique and we recommend you do the same!

For Saint Valentine’s Day 2017, the Maison Pierre Hermé Paris presents Cupidon – Hélios’ faithful companion on a beautiful box of 18 macarons. £42 from Pierre Hermé Paris boutiques in London (Covent Garden, Belgravia) or the concession in Oxford Street Selfridges.

It’s often said that a city is defined by its neighbourhoods, each one brimming with the culture and character of those that inhabit it. The Distillery District in the heart of Toronto is a neighbourhood well worth a visit, jam-packed with creativity and style.

The site, former home to Gooderham & Worts distillery, has been transformed into an inspired blend of Victorian Industrial architecture and stunning 21st century design and creativity. The result is an internationally acclaimed, pedestrianised village of one-of-a-kind stores, shops, galleries, restaurants, studios and cafes.

Check out Team Coco’s best places to visit in The Distillery District:

Soma
Calling all chocolate lovers, for a truly rich chocolate experience you need to visit Soma. This factory store has expert chocolatiers on hand to point you in the direction of some the finest chocolate treats. Make sure you try their Spiced Mayan drinking chocolate, its got a real kick!

The Ordinary
This cult beauty brand is anything but ordinary. The Ordinary’s products are described as “Clinical formulations with integrity” by the company itself. The brand is completely vegan and 100% cruelty free which is why their budget skin and make up collection is one of the hottest ranges on the market. Products often sell out within hours of hitting the shelves because they work and don’t break the bank. Invest in one of their $7 foundations and $5 Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum.

El Catrin
This Mexican restaurant has a lively and fun vibe. El Catrin offers authentic, traditional and modern Mexican dishes all created by Olivier LeCalvez, one of Mexico City’s top chefs. It took three Mexican artists almost 100 days to create the dramatic floor to ceiling murals that fill the walls. The cocktails here are off the hook and a fully stocked tequila and mescal bar occupies the length of the restaurant. It’s well worth the visit.

The Spirit of York
This craft distillery specialises in producing a gin, a vodka, a whisky and an aquavit. Visitors can settle into the cosy round bar in the centre of the room and sample the products. All of the spirits are made from 100% rye grain and expert distillers are on hand to talk you through the process and flavours. The most impressive part of the Spirit of York’s cellar door is the huge glass wall at the back where you can view the working distillery. Settle at the bar with a drink and watch the spirits being made.

Arta Gallery
Arta Gallery offers an impressive collection of contemporary work by both Canadian and international artists. Under the leadership of Director, Fay Athari the vision is to bring art to our daily lives and make talented artists accessible to the Toronto community. Art consultants are on hand to help you find the latest emerging artists and recommend some of the finest artistic works to accommodate your taste and style. The gallery also boasts an art bank where you can rent an outstanding collection of art works for your home or office.

It’s officially spring and #TeamCoco couldn’t be more excited. We’re already putting BBQ dates in our diaries, wondering how soon we can get the paddling pool out and obsessively checking the weather forecast.

In addition to all this we’re taking some time to think about what hero drink we’ll be enjoying in pub gardens come the bank holiday weekend and, if you are a fan of craft beer, have we got a looker for you!

Handsome Brew is a joint venture between Agency TK and the head brewer at Bowston Bridge Brewery and with their range of cheekily named beers poised to fill fridges all over the UK this summer we thought it was about time we caught up with them…

HOC: So, tell us more about the name Handsome, what’s that all about?

HB: We wanted to play on “beauty is only skin deep”, but as it’s a male dominated product we went with Handsome. This name also gave us legs to hang product names from it – like FKR, Stranger, Blacksmith etc. We’re cheeky but credible. We knew the beer would be handsome on the outside from TK’s reputable creative design experience, but would also taste handsome on the inside from the experience our brewers have.

HOC: We like the names and imagine they raise some smiles when ordered at the bar! With quite a range already, what else do you have in store for this summer?

HB: We do have plans to venture out into releasing a range of fruit beers, which will be perfect for summer. As an exclusive, we can tell you we’re thinking of the following fruit beers: “Handsome Cherub” – A Cherry flavour beer and “Handsome Devil” a 6.66% fruit beer!

HOC: How can we get our hands on a bottle of Handsome?

HB: You can find Handsome in many pubs around the towns and villages near our home in The Lake District, and in and around Leeds including The Red Lion in Shadwell, The Corner House Club in Leeds and Everything Good Goes in Tadcaster.
But keep your eyes peeled, we have a few more exciting stockists in the pipeline including three major supermarkets as well as online sales and we are always looking for distributors to carry our products.

HOC; Now, let’s get serious; BBQ season is approaching, what food goes well with your beers?

HB: We think each ale has their own personality, therefore would suit different grubs.
The Blacksmith we would pair with a luxury pork pie and Branston Pickle, to match the rich, dry finish.
Whereas the Top Knot would be perfect paired with your classic BBQ foods this summer: A crunchy beef burger, the odd marinated chicken skewer and dare we say it… carrot sticks and hummus!

HOC: Sounds like a well-balanced BBQ to us! Where else can we find you?

HB: Beer festivals are well underway for 2017, as we have already appeared at Boston Spa Beer Festival and are heavily involved with #craf2017 where all our products will be available and our Head Brewer will be hosting a tasting session on the Friday evening. We’re always keen to get involved in more Beer Festivals if only so we can go along ourselves!
However, we’re incredibly excited to be appearing in the Yorkshire Food & Drink Festival this June in Millenium Sq, Leeds, as well as a few bigger events like Leeds International Beer Festival

We’ve all seen the excellent truth meme ‘ Behind every successful woman is a group text hyping her up’, well I’d like to add that there’s likely a Victoria from VJW Communications (vjwcommunications.co.uk), there too.

Entrepreneurship is a hard road and one that not everyone is cut out for. At the early stages of your business you’ll likely be bootstrapping (funding your business by yourself) and unable to take on members of staff to help you with anything from accounting, securing premises right to PR and personal branding. This is where Victoria steps in, working with female founders, from launch to set powerful foundations and set them up for success…

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg4uLQOnc1D/?hl=en&taken-by=britandco

HOC: Hey Victoria, tell us a bit about your company and what you do?

Victoria: My company is VJW Communications which I set up in 2014 and Ispecialise in working with women in business and female founders who are about to launch a business or are in the early/mid launch phase. I support them on their journey from start up to success through one on one consultancy sessions in PR and personal branding.

My aim is to provide a powerful service which allows them to access and up-level their knowledge in these areas in an accessible way. After our time together, they walk away with clarity, insight and actionable steps which they can take in their business right away.

HOC: Sounds amazing and so needed as it really is a minefield when you start out! How do you tend to work with your clients?

Victoria: Having previously worked as a traditional publicist I found that as the start-up scene was changing and the number of female founders rising, that there was a need to support these women with consultancy and mentoring which really focused on a one on one bespoke service. Every business is different and every founder has a different story to tell so I think it’s important to work with someone who can really hone in on that and show you how to communicate it effectively.

The female founders that I have worked with come to me because they know that PR and personal branding is effective but they are seeking the knowledge so they can implement the basics themselves. PR for example is still seen as a bit of a dark art and I show clients how to put the building blocks in place themselves in order to achieve great results without outsourcing to an agency which isn’t always financially viable. I think a consultancy service works especially well for founders and start-ups because they need to be able to be at the forefront of their business and understand how to promote and communicate what they do. It also helps to have that knowledge of communications in preparation for business growth

I offer 60-90 minute Ignite sessions and then my signature programme called Brand You which shows you how to create and build a successful personal brand.

HOC: Why is supporting female founders so important for you?

Victoria: I think having made the move myself to self-employment and having a first-hand experience of the challenges and struggles of setting up a business, I wanted to be able to support women who were also making the leap. This has always been and continues to be my motivation. It’s rewarding to see the difference you can make not only to their business but also to their mind-set and confidence and how they view themselves as a founder. I work with many women who struggle with being visible in their business even though they want to be, they just don’t feel comfortable with the exposure.

I do believe that male and female business owners think and behave differently but I also think that we go into business for different reasons and this in turn affects how we “do” business. We also face different obstacles from the world itself and women for example are still fighting for their place in many industries which are traditionally very male dominated.

This said, I think the UK is a great place to be a female entrepreneur and the sands are shifting in terms of the resources available to support women in business, even if it is still tough to get funding. Certainly, in the bigger cities like London and Manchester there has been a huge growth in events, networks and co working clubs and spaces geared specifically towards women who are on the entrepreneurial journey.

I think it’s an exciting time to be a founder and if I can play a part and contribute even in small way to someone else’s success, then that’s amazing!

HOC: An incredible mission! Where did this all start for you, have you always worked in this field?

Victoria: Not at all! I started out in fashion retail in Leeds working for Russell and Bromley as I had always loved fashion and love the buzz of the shop floor and working with customers but I wanted to do something more business focused so this led me to a degree in International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

During my degree, I realised that it was more the communications side of the industry that I enjoyed so I worked hard on doing lots of placements in local agencies in Manchester to build up my experience. After I graduated I was fortunate to land a Marketing & PR Manager role with an up and coming celebrity chef in the city and I was involved in the early days of launching his career which included promoting his first cook book, restaurant and cookery school.

With my love of food and also travel I then went to work for a travel PR agency and was leading on a number of accounts for some beautiful properties in the UK and Europe hosting press trips and working on strategy and implementation. Following this a game changing opportunity arose for me to go and work in house to head up the marketing at a golf & spa resort in Cheshire which was about to go through a multi-million-pound redevelopment and rebrand with the opening of a luxury hotel. I was part of the pre-opening team and we won two marketing awards during my time there.

After three years in the role I decided that freelance life was for me and began working with local start-ups in the bridal, food and event before I launched myself as a full-time consultant and mentor!

HOC: It’s so refreshing to hear about your journey so far, there always seems to be so much pressure on knowing what you want from the word go but it’s so often an evolution! You work a lot on personal brand, why is this so important to you?

Victoria: Whatever sector you are in, the business world is competitive and we are all looking to gain visibility in a crowded marketplace. Throw in the noise of the digital world, where most marketing now takes place, the rise of the influencer and massive growth of social media and you have to really think smart about how you can make yourself stand out and be memorable. We all know that people buy people so you have to be confident in what you stand for and be able to articulate your expertise. Reputation is everything!

Focusing on your personal brand as a founder and putting in the time to build it in an authentic and consistent way I think gives you a distinct advantage. I think it is actually a bit of a secret weapon in that if you approach it in the right way you can really create so many organic opportunities for you and your business. The theory behind personal branding isn’t new but most people still focus on their business brand first and their personal brand sort of runs along in the background without much thought.

I actually think it should be the other way around. If you already have a strong personal brand before you launch your business you have built the foundations and network to support you in the all-important early days of your business launch. Once you start building it you have commit to growing it, tweaking it and shaping it as your business journey develops.

HOC: Super interesting, we have seen a real shift in the way small businesses we champion at House of Coco market themselves – talking more in the first person, less smoke-and-mirrors around what they are doing…

Victoria: I think it depends on the type of business you are running. It is a lot easier to make a shift from the royal ‘we’ to being honest that it’s just you if you are a single service provider like a coach or a nutritionist for example because you ARE your business so there is no “we” as such. You have to be happy to be visible in order to sell your service, plus there isn’t a bigger company brand to hide behind.

I think as founder, irrelevant of the business type, you need to get to a point where you feel comfortable in creating visibility around yourself and your story. Working through a personal branding process can help you to do that because you get really clear on who you are, what your USP’s are and what you bring to your business and to the audience you are trying to connect with.

You have to dig deep to define all these things and that passion alone will support you in stepping up. The biggest problem I see female founders facing is lack of confidence. Whether that is around getting an initial idea off the ground, giving a talk or workshop of promoting themselves in the media.

One of my favourite quotes is by Eleanor Roosevelt and I think it is sound advice for anyone running a business. “Do one thing every day that scares you.”
