Pre-March 2022, I would not have considered a staycation in the United Kingdom, given a general preconception of poor value for money offered by the hospitality industry. However, the last 2 year have shown us, that our hotel industry has seriously upped its game and have pumped countless pounds into its facilities to make them world-class. A case in point is my recent visit to Galgorm in Northern Ireland which is a mere half an hour from Belfast. With the recent airport issues, flying to Belfast is a much safer bet than flying further afield with countless flights from numerous British airports daily. (Although, saying that, I am still liaising with British Airways to claim compensation for a cancelled Belfast flight).

Travelling from Belfast to Galgorm is the opposite of the M4 Heathrow experience. Rolling green meadows and towering trees greet your arrival and if you want an even more VIP experience, arrange for one of their Rolls Royce Phantoms to pick you up from the airport. The long gardened drive up to the reception area sets the scene for a regal experience even if the front of the hotel building seems deceptively unassuming. There are over 163 acres of serene woodland for you to discover.

What immediately catches the eye is the picturesque beauty of the River Maine, which flows through the estate and the immaculately manicured flora which blooms on the estate. The resort used to be a very important local mill hence why the river plays such an important role on the estate. The hotel has been expanding exponentially with the boom in staycations and offers hotel rooms, shepherd’s huts, cottage suites, log cabins, residences and treehouses. The core of their business is the 125 hotel rooms divided into suites, deluxe and superior rooms. The rooms are extremely spacious ranging from 32 m² to 122 m². Most have impeccable views of the scenic river. Whilst the complimentary minibar is always a crowd-pleaser including local craft beers. You know it’s a no-expenses-spared experience when you find Aromatherapy Associate amenities, Dyson heater/fan and Marshall Bluetooth speaker. The king-sized beds offer a pure blissful sleeping experience with their King Koil mattresses.

There is no shortage of dining options to choose from including The River Room, one of only 4 restaurants in Northern Ireland to be offered 3 AA Rosettes. And options for Italian food lovers at Fratelli Ristorante, options for meat lovers at Gillies Grill and a gastropub experience at Castle Kitchen + Bar. The latter I would particularly recommend if you want a little trip outside of the estate, as it’s situated at the Galgorm Castle Golf Club and the hotel will provide complimentary transportation to and from the restaurant. Whilst the Gillies Grill is also well worth visiting, not just because they source some of the finest cuts of Irish aged steaks but they also have Asian twists on their meat-heavy menu. Their bang bang chicken with a hypnotic mix of sweet chilli, soy and satay is a guilty pleasure to savour.

The jewel in the crown of Galgorm is their thermal spa village. Calling it a village is a very apt description of their facilities with every possible spa experience under the sun available. This is not an exhaustive list but includes Celtic sauna infusion, snow cabin, sanarium, snail shower, the salt cave, Beltane hot tubs, saunas and pools. You can enjoy an exclusive individual hot tub relaxation session right by the river and this is the kind of restorative therapy that can take away every scintilla of stress from your body.

If you want to enjoy professional spa treatments, make sure you book well in advance as their slots do book up very quickly. Highly recommended are their opulent aromatherapy massage on a heated massage bed and the anti-aging skinceuticals expert skin-specific facial. With the former, they will even give your recommended regular treatment suggestions to ensure you reap the full benefits.

If you looking for a wellness escape, Galgorm is the place to check out with their world-class thermal spa village. It is a one-of-a-kind experience in Ireland and great value for money with what they are offering.

Rooms are from £195 per night including breakfast

You can book an individual hot tub in its secluded riverside spot to enjoy an hour soaking in the freshwater and watching the local wildlife with a bottle of fizz for £80.

Multiple destinations in one trip with zero airport queues? I’m in.

All Aboard Cruising with MSC Virtuosa

I must admit, up until this year, I cannot say I had ever considered a cruise holiday. I was always under the impression that cruises were the preserve of an older, wealthier crowd, where my Zara wardrobe would be too low-key and the trip itself, well, out of my price range. However, All Aboard Cruising with MSC Virtuosa has completely changed my perspective. However, around 2018, I started noticing a shift on social media: young people, people a good decade or so younger than myself, cruising. Instagram snaps of smiling millennials drinking pina coladas in the golden hour sunlight. Long, gushing captions about waking up in a new destination every day. And if that wasn’t enough to make me green with envy: no airport queues.

With “revenge travel” (the new buzzword for catching up on all the trips you’ve missed during the pandemic) being such a huge thing right now, airports are overloaded. Flights cancelled, missing luggage, archaic scenes at security and queues of biblical proportions, it’s no wonder that nearly 40% of 16–34-year-olds are considering taking a cruise in the next few years. The joys of being able to visit many destinations without packing and unpacking repeatedly mean you can make the most of the journey without the stressors of multiple airports. So, in the name of travel journalism, I embarked on MSC Virtuosa for my very first cruise.

MSC Virtuosa is one heck of a vessel: carrying up to 6,200 passengers at full occupancy and serviced by 10 restaurants, 21 bars, a shopping galleria, multiple theatres, waterparks, an arcade, a world-class spa, and, if you’re so inclined, a gym, there’s little risk of being bored. For those wanting to avoid the hustle and bustle, an upgrade to the MSC Yacht Club provides access to the suite-only section stretching across the three decks at the front of the ship. With a members-only lounge, a restaurant with sweeping views and a glittering Swarovski staircase, and a private, adults-only sundeck, MSC Yacht Club provides an excellent option for those lusting after a little more exclusivity.

Embarkation

If you think there’s not much difference between a cruise ship and airport check-in, then think again. Once you’ve checked in and gone through security, your luggage will magically find its way to your cabin. You are free to board the ship, where you are met with a sparkling lounge and welcome drinks. Your holiday starts here.

Cabins

The cabins are clean and spacious, with excellent storage facilities plus room under the beds for storing cases. Each cabin has a ZOE speaker for playing music or audiobooks, and a large television that can be used to access your billing information in addition to the normal channels. The beds are incredibly comfortable, and the bathrooms have more than enough room for manoeuvrability (which is shockingly lacking in many ships). If it’s within your budget, an outside cabin with a balcony is a real treat, especially in the evenings. There is nothing quite like sipping wine as you watch the sunset, excited for your next destination tomorrow.

What about entertainment?

This is where MSC Virtuosa really shines. Entertainment onboard includes:

  • The Galleria Virtuosa contains an abundance of bars, shops, restaurants, and evening entertainment options. Cast your gaze upwards to view the 80-meter-long LED display that morphs and changes throughout the trip.
  • Indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, surrounded by an array of sun loungers for catching those rays between ports.
  • An incredible spa featuring a salt-walled relaxation room, ice therapy, multiple saunas, and my personal favourite, mist showers. Whilst you’re there, treat yourself to a gloriously relaxing deep tissue massage. You will be floating back to your cabin in no time.
  • Matinee and evening shows including magic, musicals, and all manner of top-class performance art in the ship’s theatre and Carousel lounge.
  • A well-equipped gym with ocean views, plus running and walking tracks around the deck.
  • For the high rollers, there is an extensive casino complete with both electronic and table-based games.
  • Finally, for the children, there is a games arcade, rope walk, basketball court, and a LEGO-themed kids club.

The ship also provides a jam-packed daily itinerary including yoga, dance classes, karaoke, and quizzes, perfect for the longer days at sea.

Dining around

There is a general assumption that it’s easy to pop on a few pounds during a cruise and I can completely understand why: The options onboard are plentiful and delicious, and it took every ounce of self-control I have not to go all out and do my best Pac Man impression eating my way through everything the ship has to offer. The buffet restaurant provides an impressive spread of international cuisines, sides, and desserts. The speciality restaurants such as Butchers Cut Steakhouse, Indochine (a French-Vietnamese fusion), Hola Tacos, and Kaito Sushi & Teppanyaki are all worth a visit, just make sure you pre-book as soon as you can as they fill up pretty quickly.

There is a drinks upgrade package available if you are partial to a high-end tipple, and an abundance of options available if you’re saving your cash for on shore. With 21 bars on board, including one staffed by a robot bartender, there’s no excuse not to get that perfect iced cocktail shot for the ‘gram.

Insider tips:

  • Book a balcony cabin at the back of the ship for a hypnotic view of the wake trailing through the water.
  • Keep an eye out for dolphins: They love ships and can often be spotted frolicking past.
  • Book a massage and/or time in the spa. Your back will thank you for it.
  • Visit the chocolatery at Galleria Virtuosa for some tasty treats and souvenirs for friends and family back home.

How to book:

Bookings can be made directly with MSC here. Alternatively, call 0203 893 4203 or request a call back via the website. Current deals include a 7-night Northern Europe cruise from the UK for only £449pp (see website for full details).

Whether you’re a frequent traveler or planning that one “trip of a lifetime,” your journey begins with choosing a good set of luggage. Different travelers have different needs, and your choices will come down to how often you travel, your personal preferences, and your budget.

Avoid getting stuck with travel bags that are bulky, of poor quality, and don’t meet your travel needs with this guide for choosing the right suitcase for your next trip.

Consider Your Travel Style

Do you tend to take a series of short jaunts or extended one or two-week vacays? Perhaps you’re planning a month-long journey abroad. Each traveler and trip are different and fortunately, there are plenty of options from backpacks and duffle bags to larger, traditional suitcases.

Generally, backpacks and duffle bags are your best options for shorter trips when you don’t need to pack very much. Since they’re smaller, they can function as a carry-on and save you money on luggage fees. For short weekend getaways, a good quality backpack or duffle bag is a must. They come with great organizational features and are roomy enough to take what is needed for two or three days.

Many travelers take a combination of shorter and longer trips. If this is you, consider luxury luggage like Away or Monos if they meet your budget. High-quality brands such as these offer everything from carry-ons to larger check-ins. You may spend more, but you’ll be prepared for any trip with a few pieces that will last a lifetime.

Decide on Hard or Soft Materials

Hardshell or soft-sided luggage? There are good arguments for both. The argument for soft-sided luggage is that it is generally less expensive and best suited for carry-on bags. They’re lightweight for carrying and easier to squeeze into the overhead compartment or underneath the seat in front of you.

However, hardshell suitcases are much more durable, and airline workers may not handle check-on luggage gently. You’ll run the risk of it getting torn or stained. Hardshell luggage is also shock absorbent and better for protecting your belongings. It’s also easier to clean.

Whichever material you choose, look for a high-quality product that will last a long time. Ballistic nylon is the most durable soft-sided material and polycarbonate is the best hardshell material.

Consider Size and Maneuverability

When deciding on the size of your luggage, think about the duration of most of your trips and what items you typically pack. Smaller bags are easier to carry around but may not be large enough to pack all you need.

Keep in mind that each airline has its own requirement for the size of a carry-on. Dimensions of around 22″ x 14″ x 9″ are the most common so choose a bag this size or smaller. Otherwise, you may be forced to check your luggage and that will mean paying a fee.

Size is also important to consider when you aren’t traveling. You’ll need to store luggage at home when it’s not in use. If you purchase a set with several pieces, look for suitcases designed to nestle inside the largest one. This will save lots of space which is important if you have limited storage in your home.

You should also consider how easy your luggage will be able to maneuver. A telescoping handle and free-spinning wheels make it much easier. If your carry-on has wheels, keep in mind that most airlines will include them when they measure it.

Consider Extra Features

Luggage today comes with all kinds of features for convenience. Some brands come with built-in waterproof pouches for storing toiletries to prevent leakage. They’re also great for storing wet bathing suits after a beach trip.

Look for big sturdy zippers for durability. Choose metal zippers over plastic. Some zippers are self-repairing. If there’s a snag in the zipper’s teeth, simply pull the zipper back and over the snag and the teeth will reseal. The YKK zipper self-lubricates over time with use.

Some luggage comes with a built-in battery pack. This is a great feature to keep your devices charged on the go.

A detachable piggyback clip near the handle allows you to attach a carry-on or other personal item to a larger check-on bag. This way you’ll have a free hand.

Think About Security

The best luggage will have safety and security features. This is especially important if you carry electronics and other valuables in your check-in bag. Look for a suitcase with an internal or external locking system. You can purchase locks separately, but built-in ones are more convenient.

For extra security, purchase a suitcase and a carry-on with a TSA-approved lock. TSA agents will break a non-approved lock if they find it necessary to search your luggage.

You feel like you are entering a whole new world when you check-in to Chateau Denmark on Denmark Street in London. The reception is dramatically dark and interesting, and the team are all wearing deep dark clothing to match the surroundings. But the most intriguing part is when you meet your own personal butler (BTLR).

Our writer Rachel McAlley was invited to review Chateau Denmark recently, here are her thoughts on this brand new aparthotel in London’s renowned music district.

Each BTLR wears what looks like a robe from one of the Harry Potter movies, like they will magic you something exciting at the drop of a hat. Which, is of course exactly what they do. They whisk you off to your room, give you a tour of your facilities and pass on their mobile number for anything you may want. In my case, the Deluxe Session room where I stayed was like walking into a nightclub.

Chateau Denmark

I had the largest in-room fully stocked bar that I had ever seen in any apartment. My own selection of cut glass to drink from, a wine fridge, again fully stocked, a fridge with mixers, and a secret drawer stacked with curious snacks. There was even a fresh lime and lemon with chopping board and knife ready and waiting for my first cocktail. To top it off my bar had an ice maker, and a filtered cold, boiling and sparkling water tap!

Romas, my BTLR talked me through how to use the Void and Artcoustic sound system, complete with readily produced music for me to play in room. When I say sound system, I mean huge speakers that blasted the music so loud I could easily have been in a nightclub. And yes, my room was 100% soundproofed, so I could have friends over for a party.

The Wonderful World of Chateau Denmark

Leaving the living space, or nightclub as I liked to call it, I was shown around the bathroom, with beautiful bespoke Chateau Denmark body and haircare products and robes. Then I was taken into the bedroom, which had its own balcony to sit outside and enjoy city views.

The 65-inch TV took centre stage as I walked in the bedroom until I spotted the bed, with its orange velvet headboard, leather branded bolsters, side mirrors and wall art. The art above the bed included handcuffs, whips, chains and balls, which almost certainly stopped me in my tracks. Furthermore, the art around the entire apartment was a mixture of 50s and 60s rock ‘n roll, psychedelic pieces, and playful design.

Chateau Denmark

It was a dark room and I wanted to lighten things a little so I had a play with the lighting controls and found that I could change the ambiance from night to day or even party mode. Obviously I went for party mode, I mean why the hell not! My BTLR went to make me a welcome cocktail, so I put on some loud tunes and unpacked my suitcase.

Once I settled and relaxed into my stay, I could see how much attention to detail Chateau Denmark had placed in every aspect of the room. From the bouncy rubber flooring, to the linen bag which simply said ‘Filthy’ on it, and the snack drawer with Hangover Cure sweets and Mojito gummies. This wasn’t like anywhere else I had ever stayed in London.

If you are into music, are a lover of the unusual, or just want to live life a little differently I would highly recommend an overnight at Chateau Denmark. It is full of fun and playfulness, and if you’re lucky to get a BTLR with your room they are there to help with every aspect of your stay.

Visit the Chateau Denmark website to book a room, and to find out more about what the wonderful world of Chateau Denmark has to offer. I stayed in a Deluxe Session room with BTLR, priced at £674 per night. Prices vary depending on the date, and which room is booked. Here are more details about the Deluxe Session room or If you want to check out Instagram visit @chateaudenmark

Summertime is a great time to show off your best features. Many people think they have to spend a lot of money on clothes and cosmetics to look their best, but this doesn’t have to be the case. There are plenty of ways to look your best without spending a lot of money. If you want to look good for the summer months, here are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Exfoliate your skin

The summer heat can be harsh on your skin, so it’s important to exfoliate regularly. This will help remove dead skin cells and give your skin a healthy glow. Many exfoliating products are on the market, but you can also make your own by mixing sugar and lemon juice.

Take care not to overdo it, though, as this can lead to irritation. It would be best only to exfoliate a few times a week and always follow up with a moisturizer. When exfoliating, focus on areas that are prone to dryness or breakouts. These include the forehead, nose, and chin.

2. Wear sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must during the summer months, even if you don’t spend much time in the sun. The harmful UV rays can damage your skin, leading to premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it generously to all exposed areas of the skin. Don’t forget to reapply every few hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Some foundations and BB creams now contain sunscreen, so this can be an excellent way to get some extra protection.

You should also avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially during the day’s hottest hours. If you must be outdoors for extended periods, wear a hat or other protective clothing.

3. Consider whitening products

Summer is the perfect time to show off your body. If you’re self-conscious about dark or dull skin, many products on the market can help. For one, underarm whitening products can help to brighten the skin in this area. You can also use them for a more even complexion in your intimate places.

These products usually contain ingredients like hydroquinone or kojic acid, which can help to lighten the skin. You can find these products in most drugstores or online. Just be sure to read the instructions carefully and test the product on a small skin area first. Some people may experience irritation from these products, so it’s always best to be cautious.

4. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is vital for your overall health, but it can also help give your skin a healthy glow. When adequately hydrated, your skin will be more elastic and less likely to become dry or irritated. Aim to drink eight glasses of water a day or more if you’re sweating a lot.

You can also increase your water intake by eating foods high in water content. These include fruits, vegetables, and soups. In addition to drinking plenty of water, you should also avoid dehydrating beverages like coffee and alcohol. Try to stick with water, tea, or fruit juice instead.

5. Protect your hair

The sun can damage your hair, causing it to become dry and frizzy. The heat can also damage the color of your hair, making it fade faster. To protect your hair, use a leave-in conditioner or serum. These products will help hydrate your hair and protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.

You should also avoid using hot styling tools for the summer month. If you must use them, be sure to use a heat-protectant product first. Air-drying your hair is always the best option, but use it on the lowest setting if you must use a blow-dryer. The hot season is already damaging enough to your hair, so there’s no need to worsen things.

6. Eat healthy

Of course, eating healthy is essential for your overall health. Certain foods can also help to improve the appearance of your skin. Foods that are high in antioxidants, for example, can help to protect your skin from damage. These include berries, dark chocolate, and green tea.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also good for your skin. They can help reduce inflammation and keep your skin hydrated. You can find omega-3s in fatty fish like salmon, flaxseed oil, and chia seeds.

In addition to eating healthy foods, you should also avoid foods that can trigger breakouts. These include sugary and greasy foods. If you’re prone to breakouts, it’s best to avoid these foods altogether.

7. Get enough sleep

Even though the weather is nice, it’s essential to get enough sleep during the summer months. Lack of sleep can cause your skin to look dull and tired. It can also make you more susceptible to breakouts. Aim to get at least eight hours of sleep a night.

If you have trouble sleeping because of the warm weather, try using a fan or air conditioner. This will help to keep your bedroom cool and comfortable. You should also avoid watching television or working on the computer before bed. The light from these devices can interfere with your sleep cycle.

The summer season is a great time to show off your body. Take good care of your skin using these tips to look your best. With a little effort, you can enjoy clear, bright skin all season long.

A part of the Small Luxury Hotels, what MarBella Nido Suite Hotel & Villas may lack in size, it certainly makes up for in class.

Located just beside the larger-than-life MarBella Corfu, MarBella Nido Suite Hotel & Villas is an adult only boutique that adds romance and elegance to any Greek holiday.

This intimate hillside hotel was inspired by a traditional ‘Corfiote’ or Greek Villa and is filled with inviting home touches that makes it feel less like a hotel and more like the stylish holiday home of a beloved family friend. Check-in is done at the beautifully appointed orangerie, complete with a flight of Corfu-themed welcome drinks – a great first impression and a precursor to the kind of attention to detail that would define our fantastic stay.

Like the name suggests, there isn’t a main building at MarBella Nido Suite Hotel & Villas. Instead the villas are scattered across the hill and guests are shuffled around in buggies that climb the zig-zagged cliffside. We stayed in the Junior Suite, which was beautifully designed, blending rich textiles with traditional patterned tiling, a large, free-standing bath and panoramic sea views for days. The Junior Suite was a glorious retreat and filled with an air of serenity. So much so, it was hard to leave.

Outside, we had a breath-taking veranda, complete with private hot tub, that always stayed at just the right temperature. Two small bottles of Greek wines greeted us and the rosé was a delicious complement to a sunny afternoon spent on the veranda.

Aquavit, the hotel’s poolside restaurant, is also an excellent spot for lunch, with incredible views of the bay, while the Ala Carte restaurant offered some elevated classics that would impress even the most discerning connoisseur. As part of the hotel’s half-board or full-board package, both breakfast and dinner is served at the main buffet style restaurant.

Don’t let the word ‘buffet’ fool you, because if there was ever such as a thing as ‘fine dining buffet’ it would surely be this. Here, guests can enjoy dinner by candle light overlooking the sea below, while being tantalised by the culinary sensations available. Live mandolin music adds drama to breakfast, so you can enjoy your pancakes in a rarefied atmosphere unlike anything else on the Greek peninsula.

One of the advantages of staying in a boutique hotel over a larger property is the bespoke service. However, the team at Nido, led by General Manager Amarylise takes this up a notch – to astounding effect.

Amarylise knows every guest by name and often greets guests as they come for dinner. F&B Manager Achilles greets you with a smile (and a fistbump) whenever you visit the main restaurant, and the Head Chef will go above and beyond to cater to even the most exacting dietary requirements.

Heinz Troll photoshooting May 2018

Even going so far as to taking this picky eater through all the buffet items that I could have and making specially made desserts that were dairy, egg and gluten-free (a challenge for any pastry chef at short notice).

With amazing, truly personal service like this, it is easy to see why MarBella Nido is part of small luxury hotels and a firm favourite of honeymooners looking to create magical moments in a destination that is simply a cut above the rest.

Whatever pre-conceived notions you may have of what a Greek holiday may look like, think again, because a holiday at any one of the MarBella Corfu, part of the MarBella Collection hotels will surely go beyond all of your expectations.

Forget the blue and white-tinged architecture that comes to mind when envisioning a Greek holiday, because Corfu, which is a blend of Greek, Venetian and even Turkish influences is anything but. Corfu old town, which at first glance looks like a city in Tuscany (thanks to the 400-year Venetian occupation of the region), offers lesser-known Greek history, culture and flavors – but is well worth the exploration.

Just 30 minutes from the town is MarBella Corfu, a sun-soaked Mediterranean paradise in a world of its own. The hotel is located in the beautiful Agios Ionannis Peristeron, which is characterised by tranquil waters and gently curved coastlines, and could not be better placed as a quintessential Greek paradise.

MarBella Corfu is vast with endless outdoor spaces, restaurants and amenities that cater to its diverse clientele. This includes pools a plenty, a spa, a tennis court, a fully-equipped fitness centre with plenty of classes to choose from, exclusive excursions and a new aqua park. There’s plenty to feast on here for adventure-seeking guests looking to go beyond the ‘fly and flop’ holidays that the Med has become synonymous with.

The over-300 room hotel is spread across the hillside and has generously-sized rooms all offering incredible views of the Ionian sea. We stayed in one of the superior suites, which came with a glorious wraparound balcony and private hot tub, a perfect complement the mild chill of evenings in the Med.

MarBella Corfu has four restaurants which include a main buffet style restaurant, a Greek, Italian and newly-opened pan-Asian and French style restaurants. There is also a beach club in a private man-made beach, that is the perfect spot to relish in the gentle lapping of the waves of the Ionian sea.

The fabulously family-friendly hotel offers great value and visitors who take the Ultra All-Inclusive package means families can relax and enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at any of the hotels food & beverage establishments for €69 per person.

After spending the day by the pool, exploring nearby Paxos in a private yacht, or maybe indulging in a pampering treatment at the spa, venture into the hotel lobby for some live music and dancing, that brings the hotel’s diverse cast of guests together. There is a sense of community here, helped by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, and the magic of this place. It is clear that while guests book a stay at MarBella Corfu for the sun and sea, they come back because they become part of the MarBella family.

Are you in the process of planning your big trip around the world? If so, then you’re likely feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. It’s definitely an exciting time, but it can also be a little daunting to think about all the things you need to do in order to prepare. Don’t worry – we’re here to help! In this blog post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to do in order to get ready for your big adventure. So sit back, relax, and let us show you how it’s done!

Decide Where You Want to Go

The first step in preparing for your trip is, of course, deciding where you want to go. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s actually an important decision. After all, there’s a big world out there and you need to narrow down your options. So ask yourself: what kind of experience are you looking for? Do you want to explore a new culture? See natural wonders? Or just relax on a beach somewhere? Once you have a general idea of the kind of trip you want to take, you can start narrowing down your options.

Store Your Belongings

If you’re planning on being gone for an extended period of time, you’ll need to figure out what to do with your belongings. If you’re worried about leaving your stuff in your apartment, you can always ask a friend or family member to housesit. Or, if you’re planning on subletting your place, you can leave your belongings there. But if neither of those options is possible or desirable, then you’ll need to find a storage solution. You can find a facility at Storefriendly Paya Lebar that will fit your needs and budget. On the other hand, if you’re really set on hitting the road, you could sell everything you own and travel with just a backpack. It’s up to you!

Book a Flight

Now that you know where you’re going, it’s time to book your flight. This can be a tricky process, especially if you’re trying to stick to a budget. The best way to find a good deal is to be flexible with your travel dates and start looking for flights several months in advance. You can also use sites like Skyscanner or Momondo to compare prices and find the best deal. Keep in mind that you should always clear your cookies before searching for flights, as airlines will often raise prices if they see that you’ve been looking at their site multiple times.

Book Accommodation

After you’ve booked your flight, it’s time to start thinking about where you’re going to stay. If you’re on a tight budget, then hostels are definitely the way to go. They’re usually pretty cheap and you’ll get to meet other travelers from all over the world. But if you’re looking for a little more comfort, then you can always book a room in a hotel or an Airbnb. Just make sure to read the reviews carefully before booking anything!

Make a Plan

Now that you’ve got your flights and accommodation sorted, it’s time to start making a plan for your trip. This is where you’ll decide what you want to see and do in each place you visit. There are plenty of resources out there to help you plan your trip, including travel guides, blog posts, and even YouTube videos. And if you’re feeling really lost, you can always reach out to a travel agent for help.

Set a Budget

No matter how long you’re planning on being gone, it’s important to set a budget for your trip. This will help you save money and avoid getting into debt. There are a few different ways to approach budgeting for your trip. You can either create a daily or monthly budget, or you can save up a certain amount of money before you go. Whichever method you choose, make sure to be realistic about your spending and give yourself a buffer for unexpected expenses.

Pack Your Stuff

Now it’s time to start packing! This can be a daunting task, but it’s important to remember that you don’t need to bring everything with you. Just pack the essentials and leave the rest at home. And if you’re really struggling to figure out what to bring, there are plenty of packing lists online that can help you out.

Have Fun

Finally, it’s time to have some fun! Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, make sure to take some time to enjoy yourself. Explore new places, try new things, and just relax. After all, that’s what vacations are for!

So there you have it! Everything you need to prepare for your trip around the world. Just remember to take your time, do your research, and most importantly, have fun! Safe travels!

When you’re traveling, planning ahead will not only make sure you get to visit all the places you intend to but also that you can get the maximum out of each stay. Before you travel, take a look at our post to find out about some of the things you can do to help you plan ahead. We’ll be covering forms of travel, how to find affordable accommodation, and other helpful hints and tips. Keep reading if you want to find out more.

Create A Budget Plan

One of the first things you should do when planning your travels is to start forming a budget plan. This will depend on the type of traveling you’re doing and how you intend to spend your time. However, try and break up your budget plan into different sections such as the different locations you’re going to. Then create further subsections within this for things such as food and supplies, entertainment and tourist attractions, accommodation, transport, and any location-specific costs. It’s a good idea to research ahead of time any costs that may be specific to certain areas you’re visiting. For example, city or transport taxes can sometimes occur in more built-up areas. Once you’ve got all the information you need about the costs per location, you can put them all together and create a general budget for your traveling. Try and stick closely to your budget plans, as it can affect your ability to be able to visit all the places you want to go to.

Currency And Exchange Rates

As part of your budget plan, it can be helpful to make a note of the necessary currency and exchange rates for all the places you plan to visit. This way you can have the money you need to be prepared in advance for when you get there. You’ll also be able to work out how much you need to have with you whilst you’re there to afford everything you want to do.

Mapping Your Routes

Even if you’re traveling between locations via plane, the chances are you’ll be traveling around a lot by foot, train, or bus. Mapping out your routes can make your trips more relaxed and organized. Find out more about things to do in the local areas, when they’re open, and where they’re located in comparison to other sites you plan to visit. You can then make a route through locations, allowing you to stop off at each point of interest before moving on to your next location. This is especially important with travel such as backpacking and city breaks.

Duration Of Your Visits

When mapping out your routes, including how much time you want to spend in each place. For example, if you’re traveling around Europe, then how long do you plan to spend in each country? And then whittle this down to how long you want to spend in each city or town, and even how long you’ll spend on days out and activities. While this might sound like micro-management, it does mean you’ll stand a better chance of seeing everything you want to within your time limit. You can always play this by ear and choose to spend more time in certain locations if you’re really enjoying it and want to prioritize it over other planned locations.

Arranging Transport

Make sure to have all arrangements for transport made ahead of time so you’re never left stranded somewhere. Whether you’re planning to travel by plane, train, or road-tripping, your transport will play a big part in your trip and how smoothly your plans go. If you can’t book your transport ahead of time, then try and at least research the transport options for where you’re going and the best option for you. This will be easier, of course, in city locations but may be more difficult in more rural locations. If you’re staying in more rural areas or planning to travel between locations in the US or Canada, then it’s worth considering renting a car to help you and your companions get around. If you’re going to be traveling by plane but need to get to the airport in your car, then make sure to book airport parking ahead of time to secure a place. With Parkway Parking, you can get Ronald Reagan Washington airport parking vouchers, as well as a range of other airport locations, to help save you money on parking reservations.

Saving Money On Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation, this part of your travels can really eat into your budget. Try and save money if you can by staying in hostels rather than more costly hotels. Many people tend to think of poor conditions when hostels are suggested. However, there are many fantastic hostel options throughout cities and towns across the world that provide high-quality and well-maintained accommodation for a fraction of the price of a hotel. Another great option if you’re traveling with a group, is to search for rental properties in the areas you’re going to. These can vary widely in style and price but generally, there is usually a good affordable option that you can split the cost of between the group.

Research The Areas You’re Visiting

One of the most important things you can do when planning your travel is to research the local areas you’re visiting. This is important for a number of reasons. Not only will you need to plan where you want to visit when you’re there but it’s also important to learn about any local customs or beliefs. This will help you to make sure you’re being respectful of the local people and their way of life, whether that’s due to religious beliefs or simply how they prefer to practice their culture.

Check For Weather Changes

Poor or extreme weather can be a major stumbling block in your plans to travel, so makes sure to research any weather changes along the way. If the weather is really going to prevent you from being able to carry out your plans, you might be able to adapt to the situation and change your plans around them before it’s too late. It will also allow you to make sure you’re packing the correct clothing for your journeys.

Using these tips and more are sure to help you when planning and budgeting your travels in the coming weeks and months. No matter where you intend to travel, go forth knowing that you will have as stress-free a break as possible!

Calgary and Edmonton’s food scenes are the true definition of innovative, diverse, and independent, with an emphasis on local businesses supporting each other. This collaborative approach to business seeps right down to the ingredients that are shared from restaurant to restaurant. Behind a classic, there’s always an unexpected twist. If it’s Japanese, make it American kitsch too; if it’s a punk brewery, why not whack in Vietnamese food for a playful spin? Collaboration also means that independent restaurants and other small businesses can thrive alongside each other. Plus, there’s an unusually strong sense of community amidst the restaurant owners and chefs that you might expect of a small village, not cosmopolitan cities like Calgary and Edmonton.

Calgary

Where and what to eat:

Native Tongues

Calgary’s first chef-driven taco-focused restaurant is a trendy hotspot located downtown. On entry, a large bar space looks out onto an intimate dining area of communal tables designed by Amanda Hamilton (Rodney’s, 80th and Ivy, Anejo) that screams industrial chic. Endless tequila and mezcal bottles are positioned in the backdrop, and fairy lights dangle down from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made fresh daily, composed of all sorts of dynamic fillings ranging from beef brisket to house-made herb and grilled octopus. Sit by the bar for a hypnotic view of the talented mixologists prepping frozen ‘margs’ by the dozen.

CHIX Eggshop

Millennial pink tiles, pastel cornices and avo-salthered toasties make CHIX Eggshop a charming breakfast and brunch spot in East Village, a lively, re-generated neighbourhood that has become a prime location for brunch outings and mimosa pit-stops in between shopping and gallery visits. It’s the new kid on the block, launched by Alberta-born Connie Young who has a portfolio of renowned restaurants in and around Calgary. The coffee is bottomless and poached eggs are made with uncanny precision.

Foreign Concept

Small plates and large are part of the package at Foreign Concept, located right in the middle of the action in downtown Calgary. Crispy preserved lemon chicken garnished with sweet pepper chilli jam is an instant winner, and the charred Albertan rainbow carrots are a sensation both in flavour and presentation. For Chef Ly, who is classically trained in French cuisine, Foreign Concept is a way to bring his culture and heritage into his cooking through a modern Pan-Asian menu.

Kensington Food Tour

Kensington is a hub for independent businesses in fashion, beauty, and beyond. It’s also the spot for boutique wine bars and unique restaurant concepts, housing 270 local businesses in total. The brown stone buildings are similar to New York’s Greenwich Village. Pop on the Crave Kensington food tour for an intimate round of Calgary’s most liveable areas. Try your hand at decorating cupcakes with Crave Cookies and Cupcakes or taste goats’ cheese at Peasant cheese shop. Brasserie Kensington is also on the list, serving up what could possibly be the most delicious poutine in Alberta. You heard it here first.

Where to stay:

Hotel Arts has become a hotspot in downtown Calgary for its location and sleek ambiance. In the summer months, groups of friends’ flock to the trendy poolside to enjoy cocktails and tacos in a laid-back setting. Luxury Suites are spacious and offer spectacular city views from their balconies. The award-winning cuisine at Yellow Door Bistro makes an impromptu business lunch or dinner date all the more delightful.

Edmonton

Little Brick

A welcoming and cosy little cafe and breakfast hotspot within walking distance of Edmonton’s downtown area. The building dates back to 1903, when it was once an old brick house located in the heart of the river valley. The brickyard provided bricks for some of Edmonton’s most historic buildings and still looks like a house both inside and out today. Artisanal sandwiches and tasty baked goods can be taken out to the patio which is decked with picnic tables and custom-made fire pits.

Baijiu

A chic and sophisticated crowd can be found bopping along to old-school hip hop tracks here. They’re probably sipping tiki cocktails in pineapple-shaped glassware and eating late-night dumplings before disappearing behind a nondescript bookcase that happens to be a speakeasy. Standout dishes include the crispy mushroom bao that’s large enough to share, and the devilled tea eggs garnished with pickled chillies and crispy shallots also go down a treat.

Old Red Barn

The provincial capital of Edmonton is surrounded by miles of countryside, which is where you’ll find Old Red Barn, a former dairy farm turned restaurant. The drive from the city centre to Leduc takes around 30 minutes by car, though wine lovers may be tempted to book a cab to make the most of the experience. Local wine producers as well as native chefs are brought together at Old Red Barn to create a family-style meal with sweeping views of greenery and horses grazing just metres away. Expect Albertan root vegetables, artisan meats and a truly unique farm to fork experience.

Sea Change Brewery

A punk brewery with a Vietnamese twist is just another innovative combo to add to Edmonton’s list of alternative restaurant concepts. While the atmosphere screams punk, the food menu sits apart from what is conventionally associated with your typical brewery. Vietnamese bánh mì options are filled with pickled vegetables and slices of meat, a quirk that was added by founder Taylor Falk to set his brewery apart from the rest.
