Taking time out to go on holiday with your friends is not something most men get an awful lot of opportunity to do. So, when the chance arises, it’s important to make the most of it. Choosing the right destination is essential if your holiday is to be a success and for this reason, choosing a Barbados holiday is something every discerning, all-male group should consider. Offering year-round glorious weather, world-class accommodation, excellent sporting and adventure activities, ultra-relaxed beaches and a wealth of wonderful places to dine and socialise, here are some of the unmissable activities for all-guy parties in Barbados.

Deep-sea fishing

Barbados offers some fabulous fishing experiences, especially if you visit between December and April. At this time of the year, the warm waters surrounding the island are home to over five hundred different fish species, giving you plenty of chance to pit your wits against some of the big local catches, like sailfish, marlin, wahoo, barracuda, yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish.

The best way to experience deep-sea fishing in Barbados is to book an excursion with one of the island’s many experienced fishing tour operators, most of whom are based on the west coast. Highly familiar with the local waters, they’ll know exactly where to find the fish you want to catch and provide you with all the equipment and bait you’ll need for a fun day out. They’ll usually have ample refreshments on board too.

World-class golf

Golf is a particularly popular activity for all-male groups in Barbados. It’s a great sport for warm weather and comes with the added advantage of the 19th hole. There are several excellent courses on the island, including Sandy Lane and Apes Hill. However, Royal Westmoreland’s Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course, overlooking the Caribbean, is exceptional and, being championship standard, offers just the right degree of challenge. It also boasts a halfway house and a clubhouse, a pro shop, changing rooms, club hire, buggies, practice greens and a driving range.

Reef and wreck diving

Amongst Barbados’ highly transparent coastal waters are some of the Caribbean’s most breath-taking coral reefs. Diving here gives you a rare opportunity to see a spectacular array of sea life including sea horses, octopi, frogfish, turtles, stingrays, barracudas, squid and moray eels. For the even more adventurous, there are also quite a lot of shipwrecks to dive, some of which you can actually explore inside. Try the 110ft long Eillon and the 110-metre long Stavronikita, one of the largest dives in the whole Caribbean.

It is always advisable to go on an organised diving tour and you’ll find a number of operators in and around Carlisle Bay. They’ll ensure your journey is safe and provide you with all the necessary equipment and instruction.

Rum tasting

Rum is a Barbadian invention and Mount Gay Distillery has been making it for over 300 years. Its visitors centre in Bridgetown offers the ideal way to taste the world’s finest rums, learn how to make sublime cocktails and have a great time out with your mates. The centre has an excellent food menu too, so you can round your day off with a veritable feast. You’ll need a taxi home afterwards though.

Motor Sports

If you fancy yourself a bit of a Lewis Hamilton, Barbados has just the place you and your pals need to try out your driving skills. Bushey Park Motor Racing Circuit offers a variety of driving experiences, including Radical racing cars, Suzuki Swift racing and go-karting.

For racing thrills, choose the go-karting grand prix experience where you can race your mates around the circuit at speeds of up to 50mph. Of course, just like F1, you’ll need to perform well on the qualifying lap to get a good spot on the grid. The Radical Driving Experience, meanwhile, sees professional driving instructors teaching you how to handle a real racing car before letting you loose on the circuit.

Where to stay

For outstanding accommodation with a world-class golf course on your doorstep, the ideal location for an all-guy holiday is Royal Westmoreland. The private, gated, resort of just 250 properties overlooks the stunning west coast and offers a range of luxury villas, apartments and townhouses. Its top-drawer amenities include a complimentary housekeeper, concierge, private chef service, golf course, modern gym and tennis courts. There are also some superb eateries on-site and a private Beach Club with seafront terrace dining at the nearby Mullins Beach, arguably the most beautiful beach on the island.

For more information about Royal Westmoreland, visit its Transferable Deposit page.

Our roving doggy rePAWter TeamCocopup and doting dog mum Hannah Tan-Gillies went for an idyllic weekend getaway with Coppa Club at The Swan Streatley, for a taste of life by the river.

Located in what probably is the most picturesque riverside location on the Thames, The Swan Streatley (operated by Coppa Club) is an homage the beauty of the Great British countryside.

The Swan, hotel, gym, yoga, gardens, river, gardens

In quiet yet charming Streatley, The Swan is the heart of the community and the centre of its vibrant social scene. There is the country house hotel of course, which offers different rooms that would suit all sorts of travellers. From the compact yet cosy Loft room, to the generously-sized dog-friendly rooms that open the hotel’s beautiful grounds.

The grounds themselves are a sight to behold. In the summer, they come to life – becoming a hub for families, home workers or boating enthusiasts who moor there for the afternoon. Charlie was allowed in every space at the hotel and was greeted with a dog bed, dog bowl, dog treats and a dog towel too. Not to mention our room opened out directly to the lawn, perfect for night-time doggy business. The Swan at Streatley gets five stars for dog friendliness and the TeamCocopup seal of approval.

The Swan at Streatly, hotel, gym, restaurant, gardens, River Thames

The main attraction at The Swan at Streatley is or course, the Coppa Club. A sprawling restaurant which smartly occupies both indoor and outdoor spaces, The Coppa Club seems to be at the epicentre of community life in Streatley. This gorgeous restaurant offers multiple vibes for all-day dining. From a sleek den, cosy nooks, spacious lounges, a vast garden and a breath-taking deck – there’s something for all kinds of diners here.

The Coppa Club Menu serves up a selection of time and tested British bistro classics with a twist. For starters, we especially enjoyed the garlic king prawns on toast and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken (which came with chili mayo and crunchy slaw). For mains – the British Flash Steak with chimichurri certainly doesn’t disappoint; and the Roasted Halibut Fillet, made with the day’s fresh catch, was equally delicious.

For cocktails — we liked the Garden Spritz which was exactly the kind of refreshing summer drink to enjoy during the day and night. The wine menu is concise yet filled with some excellent and reasonably-priced choices too, with our favourite being the delicious rosé from Tropezian winery Chateau Minuty. Thoughtful, unfussy yet undeniably delicious – we know for a fact that a good meal will be had at Coppa Club, no matter if you’re visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Beyond great food and superb cocktails, there’s plenty to see and do at The Swan Streatley. Home to one of the most impressive gyms I have ever seen in a country house hotel, The Gym at The Swan is filled with the latest equipment and offers fun classes that include paddle-boarding, wild swimming, running clinics, outdoor yoga, stretching, meditation and so much more.

You wouldn’t be the first to think that The Swan at Streatley would make a great wedding or anniversary party venue, which is why it is so apt that the hotel has a specific area for meeting rooms and event spaces. Here, food is prepared by Coppa Club while guests stay at The Swan – an idyllic combo of excellent grub and stylish rooms in the heart of the Berkshires.

Between the sun-soaked gardens, warm and inviting hotel and fabulous restaurant — there’s plenty to fall in love with at The Swan at Streatley, a dreamy and beautiful riverside getaway. If you are exploring other riverside locations like Henley and Sonning – don’t forget to visit Coppa Club Henley and The Great House at Sonning too, sister properties of The Swan at Streatley.

Our roving doggy rePAWter TeamCocopup and doting dog mum Hannah Tan-Gillies went for an idyllic weekend getaway with Coppa Club at The Great House at Sonning, for a taste of life by the river.

Much like its sister properties, The Swan at Streatley and Coppa Club Henley, The Great House Sonning was the vibrant, bustling centre of life in the quiet riverside town of Sonning.

Every time we visited The Coppa Club Restaurant, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, it was absolutely buzzing with life and filled with both locals and tourists alike (and their pets!) It is evident that when a place has that perfect combo of good food, excellent service and a dreamy location – that the people will come…and stay a while.

And who wouldn’t? The Coppa Club at The Great House Sonning has a gorgeous riverside location that looks like it could have been lifted from a landscape by John Constable. Adding allure to the outdoor setting are Coppa Club’s signature domes, which are accented here with perfectly curated flowers and wicker chairs . The domes are the perfect Instagrammable moment for any guest at Coppa Club.

We recommend having breakfast on the terrace where you can watch the swans and ducks swimming along in the distance. Coppa Club’s Full English is impeccable, but the avocado on sourdough with Scottish salmon is equally impressive.

For a light lunch – we recommend the San Daniele Prosciutto Salad which had the perfect blend of crunch, savoury and sweet. This generous salad is made with ith D.O.P Prosciutto, rocket arugula, radicchio, apple parmesan and walnuts.

For dinner – an excellent vegan alternative is the Spice Roasted Cauliflower which comes with steamed rice, pomegranate and a hefty serving of tahini sauce. This dish puts the humble cauliflower on the spotlight and to sparkling effect, easily one of our favourite dishes on the menu.

We recommend going beyond Coppa Club and take advantage of The Great House’s beautiful riverside location. In addition to being a dog friendly hotel, the location itself is ideal for long riverside walks (and swims) with your pooches. Charlie certainly enjoyed strolling along the river and saying an enthusiastic hello to the people on houseboats moored on the banks of the Thames.

With 49 rooms, spread between the Main House, Clock Tower, Palace Yard and Coach House, The Great House at Sonning brings a contemporary flair to countryside living. The rooms are awash in a vibrant orange and duck egg blue colour palette, complete with Smeg fridges and shabby chic dark wood accents.

We stayed in the Coach House and Charlie was greeted with a dog bed, dog treats and a dog bowl. While the Coach House did have a small outdoor space for doggy business, there weren’t really any easily-accessible grassy areas from the hotel rooms for dogs to do their business at the Coppa Club, which is the only nit-pick from our otherwise wonderful stay.

In fact, all 49 rooms were booked during our stay. A testament to the popularity of The Great House and to the quality of hospitality on offer here. After our two day sojourn to the world of The Great House, which since its opening in 2016 has become a well-loved hub for the Sonning community, we too have fallen in love with life by the river.

Negative thoughts can be incredibly harmful to your well-being. Having negative thoughts can harm your daily life and increase the amount of anger and stress you experience. If you dwell on your negative thoughts for too long, they can lead to anxiety, depression, and a whole host of other mental health problems.

The good news is there are things you can do to combat negative thinking, and one of the best ways is to travel. Traveling can serve as a healthy distraction from negative thoughts. It can also help you reset your perspectives and expand your horizons.

One thing you must consider is the type of activities you decide to do when you travel. Some activities will help combat negative thoughts better than others. Here are five travel activities that can help you combat negative thoughts.

Get out into nature

Spending time in nature is incredibly beneficial for your mental health. Spending around twenty minutes outdoors and connecting with nature can reduce your stress levels, improve your mental state and help with anger management issues.

When traveling, you might want to consider doing an outdoor activity or something to engage with nature. Some common activities include going for a hike, camping in the woods, or even playing on the beach. Either way, it can help your mental state to spend time outdoors.

Visit new places

Traveling to familiar destinations can be fine, but it can grow a bit stale over time. You might need to visit a new destination. When you visit new places, you’re exposed to new sights, sounds, and experiences. This can help break you out of negative thought patterns and help you see the world in a new, more positive light.

Additionally, even if you do visit a destination you’ve already visited, there are probably places within that location you’ve never seen. For example, maybe you’ve been to Paris before and visited the Eiffel Tower and the Louver, but perhaps you’ve never visited Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Meet new people

Meeting new people while you’re traveling is another great way to break out of negative thought patterns. Sure it’s nice to see your friends or people you’re familiar with, but when you meet new people, you can learn about their lives, their experiences, and their perspectives.

Meeting new people from different countries can help you reframe how you see the world. They can remind you that there’s more to life than your problems, and maybe things aren’t as bad as you imagine.

Trying new things

Trying new things can also help combat negative thoughts. When you do something new, it forces you to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. You get to see how well you can adapt to an unfamiliar situation.

When you’re traveling, you can do tons of new things. It could be anything from taking a cooking class to bungee jumping. One thing you might consider is trying something new that is closely tied to the region you’re visiting. For example, if you’re visiting Napa Valley, you may want to consider taking a hot air balloon ride. Just do something new that scares you a little and see what happens.

Engage in a relaxing activity

Last but not least, sometimes the best way to combat negative thoughts is just to relax. When you’re feeling overwhelmed or down, sometimes it’s best to take a step back and relax. There are plenty of ways to do this while traveling.

A few ideas include getting a massage, going to a sauna, or spending time in a Jacuzzi. If you’re traveling with family or friends, you could also just spend some time hanging out and chatting. The important thing is to find an activity that helps you relax and takes your mind off your problems.

Final thoughts

Even if you travel, you still might have to deal with negative thoughts in the future. However, hopefully, you can take some of the lessons you’ve learned from your travels to prepare yourself better to handle these thoughts.

Traveling has plenty of benefits, and combatting negative thoughts is a good one. Just make sure you’re engaging in activities that will help you get your mind over your negative thoughts.

Leeds architecture is brilliant. No really, we’re not talking about Elland Road or some of the dodgy nightclubs, but the impressive façades of perfectly preserved Victorian buildings. And none is more impressive than the Queens Hotel.

One of the first places you get to when you hop off the train at Leeds Station is Millennium Square, and towering over is the Queens – a stalwart hotel with its veins running deep in Leeds’ history, and a favourite to old school celebs like Cary Grant, Laurel & Hardy or the Princess of Monaco. The Queens is really from a glamorous time at the turn of the century when rail travel was booming, and grand hotels were built by the railways to accommodate their discerning passengers.

Last year, after being open for almost 100 years, the Queens went a much needed ‘royal transformation’ injecting a new lease of life (and £16million) into one of the city’s most beloved monuments. In a nod to the building’s history, the new renovation was centred around the golden age of the railways, reigniting the glamour of its art-deco style and putting a firm focus on first class service.

We’re Leeds through and through, but sometimes you forget to appreciate your hometown in all its glory, so we jumped at the chance to check in to the newly refurbished Queens to be tourists in our home town and see Leeds through new eyes once again.

The façade is as impressive as ever, serving up grandeur from the second you lay eyes on it. Inside, every single one of the 232 bedrooms have undergone a serious transformation, seamlessly blending style, sophistication and serenity. Cosy rooms are a snug city centre escape – where the hotel’s suites are lavish and extravagant, with private terraces and rare panoramic views of the city and the Yorkshire countryside beyond.

The talk of the town as part of the new renovation is the Grand Pacific. Rarely in Leeds do bars in hotels attract attention like this, but in an unexpected partnership with Living Ventures (also responsible for firm Leeds favourite, Blackhouse), Grand Pacific has been tantalising locals and guests since its launch. Think all of the glamour and sophistication of a railway grand café combined with the excitement and flavour of a mysterious exotic oasis. It didn’t take long for us all to realise that Grand Pacific is never a bad idea – whether it’s all day dining you need, or afternoon tea, or a glass of Champagne. It’s the new go-to, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

How to be a tourist in Leeds, when you’re not a tourist in Leeds:

Leeds Market

Little do people know that Leeds is home to one of the largest indoor markets in Europe with a history dating back to 1822. There’s a rich history behind these stalls, but one of the most famous stories is that in 1884, the market became home to the first ever Marks and Spencer as a penny bazaar – its location now remembered by a centenary clock and Victorian style market stall. Great for a thoughtful gift stop or if you’ve ran out of nice jam.

Arcades

Leeds is constantly celebrated for its shopping, and there’s no place better to get lost than in the grand Victorian arcades. Our recommendation is to hit the Victoria Quarter and then get lost in Harvey Nics after, and definitely have a wine on the rooftop restaurant overlooking Briggate, best for people watching.

Leeds’ Waterways

Sounds boring but Leeds is quite literally built on the intertwining River Aire and Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Catch the free water taxi from Granary Wharf to Leeds Dock to soak up the origins of the city, and for a couple of picturesque photo opps along the way.
