Nestled away within West Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean is the beautiful and petit village of Clearwell. A couple of pubs, a couple of hotels, a cave, and a castle fill up the things-to-do-list but what a to-do list it is.

The most mental fact about Clearwell is that in the 70s the castle was used as a recording studio and hosted bands including Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, and the mighty Queen!

So, we were in great company when we booked ourselves into one of the two hotels for a couple of nights of absolute bliss.

The Tudor Farmhouse is magical, really magical. Once you’re in, you’re transported away to a holiday island of calm and relaxation.

This award-winning boutique hotel is a former working farm that dates as far back as the 13th Century. The site has been transformed into luxury rooms and suites, as well as a stunning restaurant and patio area, gardens, and chicken coop (where old battery chickens come to live out their luxury retirement!).

We stayed in the suite called The Cottage. It’s basically the same size as my house (I have a fairly small house but still!). the Cottage seems to be every staff members favourite and I can see why.

Old oak beams, a cosy fireplace, and sublime textures throughout, The Cottage is a home from home with class. The bedroom features a huge skylight above the bed, a monsoon shower, and a roll top bath. Small details like the old telephones, traditional radio, and giant fans also add to the list of ticks.

So, when you’re not laying around in your fluffy white dressing gown, drinking a Nespresso, and enjoying the peace what else is there to do at Tudor Farmhouse?

We indulged in an Afternoon tea on the patio. Surrounded by beautiful gigantic greenery (The South really is a different climate!) tables are organised so as not to encroach on each other and offer a level of indescribable privacy considering the small size of the place overall.

At dinner we enjoyed an al fresco feast with wine and blankets.

Tudor Farmhouse’s kitchen uses as much quality, locally sourced ingredients as possible from suppliers within a twenty-mile radius. With elements coming in from Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Monmouthshire.

The menu glows with seasonality, naming where every ingredient has come from.

The result is striking. With every mouthful you really can taste the freshness of each ingredient used.

The truth is, life after our stay at Tudor Farmhouse may never be the same again. The calmness of the space, the cheeriness of the friendly staff, and the remarkable refurbishment that this once probably chaotic working farmhouse was revitalising.

The UK’s hottest new hotel opening?

Located in the heart of rural Staffordshire; The Tawny Hotel which opened in July 2021 has already earned itself the reputation as one of the hottest new hotels in the UK.

Set in over 70 acres, the hotel prides itself on being the first ‘deconstructed’ hotel in the UK, essentially merging all of the best bits of a hotel and rolling it into one fabulous destination. With five lakes, a recent spa partnership with Gaia Spa (located in the hotel’s thatched cottage) and luxurious accommodation from Hillside Treehouses to Cedar-clad Retreat Cabins – there’s something for everyone at The Tawny.

The Retreats

We spent two nights in The Tawny’s newest and most luxurious accommodation offering; The Retreat suites. Eight new Cedar-clad cabins launched in August this year, inside you’ll find a sunken bath tub, a super-king size bed, windows framing the breath-taking views and out on the terrace, an outdoor spa bath for wildlife watching and star gazing!

The decor in the Retreat suites was stunning, from wooden clad headboards, to subtle nature prints – it was the perfect way to capture the very essence of the property and really bring the outside in.

The Grounds

Pop on your wellies (the hotel has some if you forget to pack yours!), and explore the picturesque grounds of The Tawny – set in 70 acres it will set you back a few hours to explore by foot, the hotel also offers bikes if you’d prefer.

We were assured that most guests head to The Tawny to simply ‘do nothing’ (that was exactly our plan too!), but if you’re keen to explore then take a dip in the hotels heated outdoor pool, a guided yoga glass or pre order a picnic to enjoy in the grounds.

Oh, and keep an eye out for the hidden ping pong table for a quick game!

The Plumicorn

We dined at The Plumicorn resturant during our stay and enjoyed the most equisite meal, the menu is ever-changing based on the Chef’s passion for seasonal produce, I enjoyed the Duck and Ben ordered the Lobster – delicious!

We found ourselves back at The Plumicorn for breakfast before we hit the road onto the next leg of our road trip; so it was a latte and Pancakes with natural yoghurt and fresh berries to start the day right!

One-night stay at The Tawny starts from £230 in the Wildwood Huts, £360 in the Lookout, £400 in the Boathouses, £420 in the Treehouses and £560 in a Retreat, based on two sharing and inclusive of bed and breakfast.

The Garden Suites

We spent two nights in the Garden suite ‘Fern’, with it’s stand alone roll top bath, walk-in shower, spacious bedroom, coffee machine and luxury towelling bathrobes, the suites really offer an air of luxury.

The Welsh countryside themed decor will have you captivated when you step through the threshold, with calming greens and prints inspired by nature – the suites really capture tranquility that reflect their surroundings.

Fine dining at Pale Hall

Acclaimed three rosette and Michelin green star fine dining restaurant features signature dishes from Pale Hall head chef, Gareth Stevenson. Rising star Gareth showcases his creativity and skill through the fine dining menu.

We experienced the exquisite 8-course tasting menu accompanied by the wine flight served by the hotels Sommelier. Our experience lasted several hours and was an evening we will truly cherish; the food, atmosphere and experience was out of this world.

Top Tip

One of the recommended trails from Pale Hall during our stay was Dolgoch Falls, located just an hour drive from the hotel and I couldn’t recommend this visit anymore. Dolgoch Falls are a series of three picturesque waterfalls located in Gwynedd, North Wales. Take a slow walk around the falls, take a picnic to eat by the stream then finish off with a dip in the falls (cold, but oh so worth it!).

Wedged between Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire is Rutland, home to rolling countryside, lakes and hiking and biking trails, making it a fabulous destination to reconnect with nature. Whether you are looking to escape the everyday with your beau, disconnect with your girlfriends or get active as a family, Rutland is a fantastic location for a mini-break. Just two hours outside London, I took the opportunity to kick back and make the most of country living.

Clematis Cottages are part of Lodge Farm, located in the medieval hamlet of Aunby near Stamford. Situated on a hilltop, it’s enveloped by fields and forests and from the moment I arrive I feel myself relax. Stone outbuildings which are believed to date back to the eighteenth century have been sympathetically restored and tastefully converted into rental cottages, retaining many original features to provide luxury accommodation furnished in keeping with the building. I stayed in The Eco Barn, which was spacious and homely, incorporating many eco-friendly elements. It is split across two floors and the top floor, which has a large, dedicated lounge area offers the most amazing views of the countryside. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a generous sized kitchen and lounge area, it’s a beautiful base to retreat and unwind. The peace and tranquillity that surround the cottages bring instant zen to my stay. Owners, Kaye and Richard, grow all their own fruit and vegetables, and I arrive to a welcome package of fresh eggs, milk, and home-made jam. Richard is also an avid Beekeeper, and his honey is divine. Close to the market town of Stamford and not far from Burghley House and Belvoir Castle, the cottages are in a great location to explore the local area.

Rutland Water, a large man-made reservoir is the focal point of the county. Rutland Watersports offer a range of exhilarating activities, and the team are all knowledgeable, advising on the best activity to suit your goals. I opted for some kayaking to start followed by a bit of paddle boarding. I recently tried kayaking for the first time and loved it so was excited to get back on the water. It’s a brilliant way to switch off. The sun was beaming and the views around the lake were gorgeous. After an hour exploring, I hopped on a paddle board. I’d passed a couple of people effortlessly gliding along the water and after my kayaking success I thought I’d give it a whirl. This was not as easy as it looked, and I spent most of the time on my knees. I wobbled along for 15 minutes before my abs and arms gave up. You can also windsurf and sail, with an option to hire equipment. The team run courses, personal tuition and have an activity programme geared up for beginners through to seasoned sailors.

For those looking for a bit more action there’s a large inflatable Aqua Park on the site. Thrill-seekers can slip, slide and splash at one of the UK’s biggest inflatable outdoor water parks. The Aqua Park features the UK’s tallest obstacle: The Rutland Mammoth. Plummet from the giant slides or free fall from a staggering five metre drop. This Ninja Warrior style course is great fun and will test you to the limit, ideal for families and groups

You can also hire bikes and explore around the water, it’s pretty flat making it just right for a leisurely pedal.

After all the fun on the water I had worked up an appetite. Just 10 minutes from Clematis Cottages is The Olive Branch pub. Situated in the pretty village of Clipsham, this is more than a local pub. Their accolades include Michelin Pub of the Year, Winner of the Good Pub Guide UK Pub of the Year for 2021 and nominated as a Finalist in the GQ Food & Drinks Awards Pub of the Year 2021 and upon arrival it’s easy to see why.

The team are on the ball and friendly. After been shown to my table I am swiftly served drinks and given the low down on the menu. The outdoor space has been converted into a series of ‘garden party’ style gazebos for the summer season. Our tented table was awash with colour and detail. Gingham napkins, dainty flower vases and candles set the shabby chic vibe, while fairy lights, cushions and throws make it cosy and intimate.

The kitchen is overseen by Head Chef, Luke Holland and the menu is determined by the availability of homegrown, local produce. It’s not your usual pub fare, Holland has successfully combined a gastro menu with fine dining touches. I started with a flavoursome Braised ham hock served with heritage radish and perfectly balanced with a light, tasty apple and lovage velouté. The Olive Branch fish and chips are a firm favourite and it’s easy to see why. The haddock comes encased in an airy, crispy beer batter alongside triple cooked chunky chips with soft fluffy centres and a delicious homemade tartare sauce. The team regularly run masterclasses and tasting sessions. Inside the pub there’s a bottle shop for those looking to take the party home. The Olive Branch has successfully combined provenance and quality which is why snagging a table here isn’t easy. Book early to avoid disappointment.

A road trip to Sneaton Castle, Yorkshire in a sleek Audi Q5 Sportsback

Back in May our Editor in Chief Laura and I planed an EPIC four-day road trip & staycation around the historic county of Yorkshire. It was actually my first ever visit to Yorkshire and it did NOT disappoint!

The last stop on our four-day Coastal Yorkshire road trip was an overnight stay at the stunning Sneaton Castle (boy did we save the best until last!), from the dramatic grounds to the stunning interiors; which consisted of lots of cladding, beautiful stone and colourful prints to compliment the decor.

We spent one night at the castle which included a delicious evening meal, a soak in the freestanding tub and of course a quick visit to the properties Llamas!

We were both completely blown away by the beauty of the castle and it’s somewhere I’d love to head back to for a romantic getaway!

Plan your visit to Sneaton Castle!

Laura and I took separate cars as we had different journeys heading home, I had the pleasure of driving a majestic Audi Q5 Sportsback for the duration of our road trip, it was such a smooth, sleek drive (with over 500 miles covered from the start to end of our trip – I didn’t ever want the driving to end!).

The Q5 Sportback effortlessly combines family-friendly utility and sophisticated technology with great sporting appeal. Its coupé-like roof line underscores the sporty design language, while the quattro on demand all-wheel drive ensures a fascinating drive every time.

Discover the Audi Q5 Sportsback here!

Whether you are looking for an adventurous, rustic camping staycation, a history-filled island retreat, a fun-packed beach weekend, or a luxury spa experience, we have got you covered. Our four top recommendations for staycations in Ireland cover the lot. From Castle Ward to Aran Islands and Skerries coastal town to Belfast spas, you can find a trip that suits your staycation needs. You could even research some of these Ireland destinations, and what there is to do, and what the must-see attractions are, by reading blogs such as ConnollyCove. This will give you some valuable insight into planning your trip! Below are some more ideas for you to consider when on your travels:

Camping in Castle Ward

This dramatic 18th-century castle in Northern Ireland is not only a great spot for a rustic camping trip but is also the site of Winterfell in Game of Thrones. You can decide if you would rather camp the old-fashioned way, with a tent that you pitch yourself, or the glamorous way, in a premier pod, fitted with power points and cozy sleeping arrangements.

While you are staying at Castle Ward, you can check out some Game of Thrones local filming sites. If you are not into the fantasy world of Westeros, you can go on hikes and adventures to the coast for stunning views and crisp, fresh air. This is the perfect staycation for families or couples who love to explore and be active on their weekends away.

Aran Islands Rural Retreat

The Aran Islands are 3 rocky isles off the West Coast of Ireland. They lie at the mouth of Galway Bay and are well known for being home to some incredible ancient sites. The largest island, Inishmore, boasts the prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa, which sits on top of a high cliff. Nearby you will find the Worm Hole, a rectangular natural pool. The medieval ruins of the Seven Churches are in the northwest of the Island. Finally, you can visit Clochán na Carraige, which is a stone structure with a beehive roof that dates back to the Christian period.

If this rustic and historic Irish island getaway appeals to you, why not make it a weekend trip? You can browse the available accommodation and look online at the restaurants, bars, and shopping opportunities to get excited for your trip away. This is a perfect staycation as you can book an adorable little thatched cottage, a lovely b and b, or a grand 18th-century house and relax in the unique and beautiful holiday accommodation.

Skerries Beach Getaway

If you are looking to escape the bustle of Dublin, you just need to travel 30km north of the city center. There lies the picturesque coastal town of Skerries, located in Fingal. Skerries was historically a fishing port, but today, the quaint little town boasts a beautiful harbor with pretty multi-colored shop fronts facing the sea. Moreover, there is a great line of seafood restaurants by the harbor and a skyline dotted with windmills for your staycation pictures.

At the shore at the lovely Skerries beach, you can learn to kite surf, go paddle boarding at sunset, and watch fishermen bring in their catch of the day. There are ample opportunities to take in some fresh-cooked Irish grub, sip on tasty drinks and take part in other fun activities and excursions from Skerries, such as a river cruise. Your staycation can be tranquil and fun-packed all in one at this delightful coastal spot.

Spa Trip from Belfast

If you are thinking of taking a luxury spa trip and you are based in Belfast, you will be pleased to learn that there are several great options with your name on them! You can look into the various hotels and spa centres in your area and choose the one that is in the right price range and offers the best services for you and your needs. Whether you are traveling solo, with a partner, friends, or family, there is a spa perfect for your own brand of staycation.

Luxury and relaxation are within reach – book today and let the staycation begin. From manicures and pedicures to mud baths and saunas, swimming pools and massages, facials, and afternoon teas, what are you waiting for? When you arrive at the spa of your choice, you will find it hard to believe you don’t go every weekend.

This has been four top recommendations for staycations in Ireland. These four suggestions cover a range of interests and preferences, from rustic camping to luxurious spa treatments, beach fun, and wild island exploration. Hopefully, there is something here that appeals to you. Your staycation does not have to be boring or too familiar, just because you are not leaving the country. There is plenty on your doorstep that is exciting, new, and waiting for you. Have fun!

Our roving doggy rePAWter TeamCocopup and doting dog mum Hannah Tan-Gillies have checked into The Bradley Hare for a relaxing weekend getaway in Southwest Wiltshire.

The Bradley Hare, located in the quiet yet charming village of Maiden Bradley, gives you the familiar feeling of a traditional village pub but with a twist. Forget your preconceived notions about traditional country inns because The Bradley Hare is that and so much more.

Located in the wildly picturesque grounds of the Duke of Somerset’s estate, The Bradley Hare benefits from and is inspired by the gorgeous pastoral landscapes that surround it. The rooms, which are warmed by roaring fires in the winter months, have been designed by James Thurstan Waterworth, ex-European Design Director of Soho House.

While boasting some handsome 18th and 19th-century furnishings, each of the 12 individually-designed bedrooms exude a muted yet contemporary vibe, elevating the rural chic interiors. Picture glorious free-standing baths, Egyptian cotton sheets, Siberian goose down duvets and a colourful array of contemporary artwork – that is exactly the aesthetic at The Bradley Hare.

We stayed in one of the five generously-sized dog friendly bedrooms in the Coach House. Opposite the pub and with plenty of space to roam, these gorgeous farmhouse style rooms are the perfect place to relax and unwind amidst the sounds and scenery of the great British countryside.

Guests who are staying at The Bradley Hare can expect a complimentary continental breakfast, which exceeded our expectations of continental meals. While hot breakfasts incurred an additional charge, the continental, which offered delicious homemade granola, pain au chocolate, ham, fresh juices, coffees and freshly-baked sourdough with homemade jams and yoghurts will soon make you forget about the lack of a full English.

We were lucky enough to visit during a sun-soaked weekend and so our lunch was enjoyed in The Bradley Hare’s garden. Here, both locals and tourists come together to enjoy delicious food and great company. Inside, the pub’s bar area is dog friendly – perfect for well-behaved dogs like TeamCocopup. The Bradley Hare boasts an ever-changing seasonal menu that makes good use of the fresh and local ingredients to reimagine pub classics. The Bradley Hare is a champion of zero-waste and tries to minimise food waste as much as possible.

This is best exemplified by the ‘Crumbled Pig’s Head’ which is a delicious appetiser made with the offcuts of a pig – ensuring that the whole pig is used. The Pork Belly with anchovy sauce is crispy, tender with the anchovy sauce offering a surprising yet delightful twist to the pub classic. We also liked the cod roe with asparagus and chervil sauce, and the Hake with artichoke heart. All this is paired with a fabulously eclectic wine list and cocktail list. The Bradley Hare was also very accommodating of our dietary requirements, making it a suitable place for those suffering from food allergies and intolerances.

If, during your visit, you only have time to do one thing in Maiden Bradley, then definitely spend the day at Stourhead. This gorgeous National Trust property is just a seven minute drive away from The Bradley Hare and boasts 2,500 acres of unspoilt countryside and breath-taking gardens. There are Palladian structures that add majesty to this place, shady pathways and even a hidden grotto. The gardens are dog-friendly, offering the perfect day out for families and four-legged friends.

Back at The Bradley Hare and run a relaxing bath in your room. It is the best way to recharge after a day of exploring. Between the tranquil interiors, excellent service and even better pub food – there’s plenty to love at The Bradley Hare. We shall surely be returning for another relaxing and magical weekend in Maiden Bradley’s best kept secret.

There isn’t a hint of beige at nhow London, a bold and creative new hotel that is oozing with style and panache.

Our roving doggy reporter TeamCocopup Charlie and doting dog mum Hannah Tan-Gillies ventured out in the vibrant hotel for a luxury penthouse stay that’s fit for VIPS (very important pooches).

‘London Reloaded’ is the theme of nhow London, the new kid on the block in the city’s hotel scene. The lobby is an explosion of London-themed motifs, from Big Ben lifting off to armchairs donning Queen’s Guard uniforms.

Nhow London is a colourful celebration of East London’s art, culture and community. All the striking artworks in the space is curated by Jealous Gallery in partnership with Project Orange. Indeed, there is something to feast your eyes on at every corner at nhow London, much in the same way that London always offers something new to discover for residents both new and old.

TeamCocopup Charlie checked-in for the VIP Pet Package and was greeted with a dog bowl upon entry. One of the best things about the hotel’s pet policy is that there was no size restriction on pets. All paw friends are welcome regardless of size, which is great for a medium-sized dog like Charlie.

The Penthouse Suite is located on the eighth floor at the end of an Alice In Wonderland-esque hallway, with each room door fashioned like the doors at Notting Hill, complete with classic brass knockers. Green shag carpets may seem like an odd design choice at any other establishment but fits right in at the Penthouse Suite, which is stylish and full of personality.

The triangular layout offers cosy little pockets, while maximising the city views on the eight floor. Modern and contemporary furnishings are balanced with bold wall papers, and of course plenty of art. The Penthouse is home to one of the most opulent bathrooms we have seen, complete with free-standing bath and gold sink. The bathrobes, with ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ embroidered accordingly, reflect the same royal theme, ensuring that all guests feel like kings and queens during their stay.

While the Penthouse Suite missed a couple of doggy essentials like a doggy bed or bowls, we appreciated how Charlie was allowed in every communal space at the hotel. The hotel restaurant, Bell & Whistle, is part of the lobby and anchored by a striking fireplace with wood planks designed to almost extend out of the space. Neon signs, kitsch royal family mugs, a curious selection of books, miniature boats and porcelain pooches are dotted around the cosy yet vibrant space.

The menu, while small, offered plenty of flavour. We tried BBQ Fillet of Mackerel which was served with baby lettuce, pickled heritage carrots and a punchy anchovy dressing. For mains, you simply must have the nhow Burger, which comprises a dry aged Angus beef patty with all the trimmings. The Spatchcock Roast Baby Chicken, served with a warm courgette and cherry tomato salad, also impressed. For dessert, the Vegan Eton Mess is a must-have and perfect for dairy/egg intolerance sufferers like me.

There is no better way to end the evening than with a drink at the bar. The nhow bar is the place to be for a vibey cocktail. It has a vast range of craft beers and ciders and specialist spirits that would impress even the most knowledgeable connoisseur.

With so much going on at the hotel and in buzzy East London, the Penthouse Suite is a haven from the busyness below. It is stylish place to recharge and call home, even for just a short stay and we almost didn’t want to leave. From the punk meets pop interiors, the effortlessly cool vibes and the fabulous service, there’s certainly plenty to love at nhow London – we shall surely be returning.
