Aqua-Tox is a luxury wellness destination, just 30 minutes outside central London offering some of the latest technology and science backed facilities for ultimate health optimisation.  Based in Hertfordshire, they focus on four pillars; wellness, recovery, laser and aesthetics.  There are very few clinics outside of London that you could call a true wellness destination offering treatments from the Hyperbaric Hydroxy AirPod that speeds up the body’s healing process, a whole body Cryotherapy Chamber, to enhanced recovery treatments such as their Infrared Sauna and NormaTec compression therapy.

The team here know their stuff, whether you are looking to recharge your inner battery, recover from an intense training session or perk up a dull complexion there’s a slew of preventative and regenerative treatments.  I’d recommend starting with a consultation with one of the therapists who will then design a carefully curated treatment plan.

But let’s talk about what really sets Aqua-Tox apart – their skincare game.  Aqua-Tox has highly effective skincare programmes for a wide range of skin concerns including acne, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. I was looking to combat a lack lustre complexion that was dry and in need of a glow up.  I had a skincare consultation with their in-house nurse prescriber and skincare expert, Lucy who recommended a customised series of treatments and personalised skincare advice including Dermalux LED phototherapy and Obagi Blue Peel facials.  Alongside this Lucy provided me with an at-home skincare regime using the Obagi Medical range which is used during all their facial treatments and can be purchased from the clinic.

The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance, is a light chemical peel that includes deep pore cleansing, mild exfoliation and moisturisation to help rejuvenate and improve your complexion. This peel enhances skin smoothness and radiance to reveal tighter, brighter, glowing results. Following the peel Lucy popped me under an LED mask to accelerate the results.

LED masks are working their way into our beauty routine and with Victoria Beckham a firm favourite LED light therapy is fast becoming a quick way to supercharge your skin.  The Dermalux treatment at Aqua-Tox is the gold standard.  It’s large and arcs across all the face and neck.  Using three shades of light, combined, they stimulate the skin’s cellular functions.

Blue light has an antibacterial action, preventing breakouts from forming while red light boosts cell renewal, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. Near-infrared travels all the way to the subcutaneous tissue, where it increases circulation, increasing the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells.    The results are great and after just two sessions I noticed that my skin looked less red and calm.

The great thing about Dermalux LED phototherapy is that the results are cumulative, the more treatments you have the better your skin looks. It also compliments some of the other skincare treatments Aqua-Tox provides like dermal fillers, Profhilo and Polynucleotides due to its ability to accelerate healing and calm inflammation.

After eight sessions, alongside using the Obagi products, I’d achieved the glow I was after.  My skin was brighter, tighter and smoother.  The best bit, others had noticed, my other half said I had a healthy glow and my sister asked me if I’d changed my products as my skin looked great.  if you’re looking to invest in your skin over the winter then a visit to Aqua-Tox is a must.  I’ve already recommended friends and my sister booked a consultation as soon as I let her in on my secret.

Skincare and fitness share a more symbiotic relationship than meets the eye. Your skin, the largest organ of the body, is not just a passive barrier but an active participant in your overall health, including your fitness endeavours. It breathes, sweats, and suffers the wear and tear of every workout, just like your muscles. Skincare, therefore, should not just be about aesthetics; it is about maintaining the health and vitality of this crucial organ. As you embark on your fitness journey, it’s essential to parallel that commitment with a tailored skincare regimen that understands and responds to the demands of a physically active lifestyle.

Embarking on a fitness routine without a corresponding skincare strategy can be likened to running a marathon without the right shoes. Sure, you might make it to the finish line, but at what cost to your feet, or in this case, your skin? Engaging in regular exercise increases blood flow, promoting skin cell turnover and nourishment. Concurrently, it also exposes your skin to stressors like sweat, friction, and environmental elements. Your skin supports you throughout each squat, sprint, and stretch—it’s only fair that you return the favour with care that keeps it strong, supple, and resilient.

A savvy skincare routine synced with your workout regimen is not vanity; it’s a crucial aspect of self-care that safeguards your skin’s health, keeping it as fit as your toned physique. Let’s dive into how you can make both your skincare and workout routine work in harmony for the best version of yourself.

The Importance of Understanding Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is akin to understanding your body’s reaction to different types of exercise. Just as you would select a workout routine that suits your fitness level and goals, your skin requires a bespoke approach. If your skin is oily, a rigorous workout might leave you more prone to breakouts due to excess sebum mixing with sweat. Dry skin might feel tighter and more parched post-exercise, craving extra moisture. Combination skin calls for a balanced approach, while sensitive skin demands gentle, non-irritating formulas.

Incorporating products tailored to your skin’s needs ensures that you’re not exacerbating any existing conditions with your exercise routine. This targeted care maximises the skin benefits of your fitness regime, leaving your skin refreshed and radiant rather than irritated or stressed.

Pre-Workout Skincare: Laying the Foundation

Before you hit the gym or the pavement, a pre-workout skincare routine sets the stage for protecting your skin from potential issues like clogged pores and excessive dryness. A gentle cleanser can remove impurities and excess oils, providing a clean slate. Follow this with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser. This hydrates your skin without leaving a heavy residue that mixes with sweat to clog your pores. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is indispensable if your workout takes you outdoors, guarding against the ageing effects of UV rays.

Just as you wouldn’t embark on a physical activity without a warm-up, don’t overlook the need to prepare your skin. This step not only protects it but also enhances your skin’s ability to deal with the stress of exercise, just like a good warm-up prepares your muscles.

Post-Workout Skincare: Recovery and Replenishment

After your workout, your skin will be flushed with increased blood flow and, more likely than not, a layer of sweat. Now it’s time for recovery. Starting with a thorough cleanse helps to wash away sweat and bacteria, preventing breakouts and irritation. Following up with a hydrating toner can help restore your skin’s pH balance, while a good moisturiser will replenish any lost moisture and aid in repairing the skin’s barrier.

Consider a post-workout skincare routine as the cool-down phase of your exercise regimen. It soothes the skin, reduces inflammation, and ensures that the healthy glow from your workout is from within and not just a facade of sweat and exertion.

Common Skin Conditions Aggravated by Exercise

Exercise, while filled with numerous benefits, can sometimes be a catalyst for skin concerns. The increased temperature and moisture on your skin can create a fertile environment for conditions like acne, which thrives on sweaty skin. For those dealing with dermatitis, the combination of sweat and friction can lead to flare-ups. And let’s not forget the nuisance of chafing, where skin rubs against skin or clothing, causing painful irritation.

For these conditions, products like hydrocortisone cream can soothe dermatitis, Fucidin cream can address bacterial issues, Eurax cream can alleviate itching, and a targeted steroid cream such as Betnovate cream can reduce severe inflammation. Remember, these treatments are not one-size-fits-all and should be used as part of a considered skincare regimen.

Accessing Skincare Advice: GPs and Pharmacists as Your First Point of Call

When skin issues become a hurdle in your fitness journey, seeking professional advice is a step in the right direction. A GP can assess your condition and, if necessary, refer you to a dermatologist who can provide specialised care. Pharmacists are also a valuable resource for over-the-counter remedies and can guide you on the correct use of treatments like hydrocortisone and Eurax creams.

Just as a personal trainer can tailor your workout to your specific fitness goals, these healthcare professionals can customise your skincare regimen to meet your skin’s unique needs, especially as they relate to your exercise habits.

Nutrition and Hydration: The Internal Skincare Regimen

Your skin’s fitness is not only influenced by what you put on it but also by what you fuel it with. Hydration is crucial; drinking ample water before, during, and after your workout ensures that your skin, like your muscles, remains hydrated. Nutritionally, a diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins supports skin health, boosting its ability to withstand the rigours of exercise and recovery.

Think of each nutrient as a member of your support team, working behind the scenes to keep your skin in peak condition. Together with topical treatments, they form a comprehensive skincare strategy that mirrors the holistic approach you take to your physical fitness.

Skin Fitness for the Long Haul: Maintaining Healthy Skin Over Time

Adopting a skin fitness mindset is about the long game, not just immediate results. As your body changes and adapts to different fitness routines over time, so should your skincare. Periodic evaluation of your skin’s condition and the effectiveness of your current regimen will keep it aligned with your evolving fitness needs.

Your skin’s needs in your twenties will differ from those in your forties; the products and practices that work for you now may need adjustment down the line. Keeping abreast of these changes is key to maintaining the health and appearance of your skin through the decades.

Commitment to Skin and Body Wellness

Your skin’s fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint. It calls for dedication, consistency, and adaptability—just like your workout regimen. The synergistic relationship between skincare and physical fitness cannot be understated. Each complements and enhances the other, contributing to a holistic approach to your health and well-being.

By now, you should feel empowered with the knowledge and strategies to take charge of your skin’s health in tandem with your physical fitness. Remember, the effort you invest in your skin today paves the way for a healthier, more radiant you tomorrow.

Don’t let the change of season dim your sparkle. Here’s our guide to the best products and treatments to unlock radiant skin and enhance your wellbeing.

We’ve all been there; cupboards and cabinets filled with skincare products we bought many moons ago but haven’t got round to binning just yet.

However, using expired products may not only be less effective than usual, but they could also be a breeding ground for bacteria and increase your risk of skin irritation.

Different formulas will have different expiration dates, but one thing is for certain – all skincare products have a shelf life.

With National Hygiene Week launching today until 8th October, the team of Kiehl’s Skincare Experts explore how you can tell whether your skincare products have expired.

Can my skincare products expire?

In a word, yes. Products naturally degrade slowly over time even when stored correctly. Some last longer than others depending on the ingredients, preservatives in the formula and the way they’re packaged.

If you’re suddenly getting itchy from a product you’ve had for a while it’s definitely time to let go and bin it.

How can you tell if your products have expired?

Here in the UK, you’ll find a little tub and lid printed onto all skincare products, this is a PAO symbol (period after opening) and it typically has a 6m or 12m detailed next to it.

Keep a note of the date you open your new product, then you can be sure not to keep using it past expiry.

How can I tell if there is no expiry?

Occasionally there’s no expiry PAO if products are from the US or elsewhere or if you can’t remember when you opened it.

Use your senses to get an idea – is the smell a bit funky? Is the colour different? Sometimes expired products will separate, or the texture might change significantly.

What will happen if you use expired products?

Kiehl’s does not recommend using any products that have expired.

First up, they won’t be as effective. Active ingredients break down over time and there’s potential for chemicals to alter.

Sunscreen, for example, should never be used after its expiration date as it simply won’t provide the protection advised and could leave you in danger of sun damage.

Expired products will also become full of bacteria and transferring that to your skin might cause redness, a mild rash or an eye infection.

Because of this, expired products need to be discarded. If you have sensitive skin, then you’ll want to be extra vigilant.

Can products differ with the signs of expiry?

Yes, it all depends on formulation, temperature, time and physical stress.

Water-based products are more prone to bacterial growth, so you might see mould appear. Oil-based products oxidise over time – look out for colour and odour changes.

Natural ingredients are often first to expire, and they’ll oxidise too unless the formula contains effective antioxidants or broad-spectrum preservatives, but even preservatives have expiry dates.

In other words, nothing lasts forever.

How should I store my products?

Expiry dates are useful, but they’re also only as good as your storage conditions.

Bathrooms are unfortunately not the right place to store skincare, the humidity and changes in temperature can cause issues for most formulas.

Keep them away from spots where they’ll get too hot like windowsills or above radiators and try to avoid exposing them to too much light. Instead, keep your products in a cupboard or drawer and don’t forget to reseal them after using.

If you’ll be putting your fingers in a jar, always make sure they are clean too.

Just remember, if it doesn’t smell right or looks weird, it’s time to throw it out!

Thanks to the Kiehl’s Skincare Experts for offering an insight on how to understand what expired skincare products can do to our skin, and also for directing us to National Hygiene Week.

Are you tired of looking in the mirror and noticing fine lines and wrinkles that seem to have appeared overnight? Don’t worry; you’re not alone. Aging is a natural process, and one of its most visible signs is the development of lines and wrinkles on our skin. But here’s the good news – you don’t have to live with them! Dermal fillers in Glasgow offer a fantastic solution to rejuvenate your skin and regain that youthful glow. In this blog post, we’ll explore how these treatments can help you revitalize your skin in the heart of Scotland’s vibrant city.

Understanding Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical cosmetic treatment designed to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, plump up sagging skin, and restore lost volume. These fillers are typically made of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in our bodies that helps maintain skin hydration and elasticity. By injecting dermal fillers into specific areas of your face, you can achieve a smoother, more youthful complexion.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers

1. Immediate Results

One of the biggest advantages of dermal fillers is that they provide immediate results. Unlike some other cosmetic treatments, you don’t have to wait weeks or months to see a change. As soon as the filler is injected, you’ll notice a visible improvement in the treated areas.

2. Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive

Dermal filler treatments are non-surgical and minimally invasive, which means there’s no need for lengthy recovery times or extensive downtime. You can schedule your appointment during your lunch break and return to your daily activities right after.

3. Natural-Looking Results

Worried about looking “overdone” or unnatural? Dermal fillers are known for delivering subtle and natural-looking results. Skilled practitioners can enhance your features while maintaining your unique facial expressions and characteristics.

Common Treatment Areas

Dermal fillers can target various areas of your face, helping to reduce lines and wrinkles where they bother you the most. Some of the most common treatment areas include:

1. Nasolabial Folds

These are the lines that run from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Dermal fillers can soften these folds, making your smile appear more youthful.

2. Marionette Lines

Marionette lines are the vertical lines that extend from the corners of your mouth to your chin. Fillers can plump up this area, reducing the downturned appearance.

3. Cheeks and Temples

Dermal fillers can restore volume to your cheeks and temples, helping to lift and rejuvenate your entire face.

4. Lips

Many people opt for lip fillers to achieve fuller, more defined lips. This treatment can enhance your smile and boost your confidence.

Choosing the Right Practitioner in Glasgow

When considering dermal fillers in Glasgow, it’s essential to choose a reputable and experienced practitioner. Look for clinics with certified professionals who prioritize your safety and well-being. Take the time to research reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or family who have undergone similar treatments.

The Treatment Process

Dermal filler treatments are quick and straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Consultation: You’ll meet with your practitioner to discuss your goals and expectations. They will assess your facial anatomy and recommend a customized treatment plan.

2. Treatment: The actual injection process typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.

3. Results: You’ll see immediate results, and any mild swelling or bruising should subside within a few days.

4. Follow-Up: Some practitioners offer follow-up appointments to ensure you’re satisfied with the results and make any necessary adjustments.

Conclusion

Dermal fillers are a powerful tool for reducing lines and wrinkles, helping you revitalize your skin and regain your confidence. In Glasgow, these treatments are readily available, providing a safe and effective way to achieve a more youthful appearance without the need for surgery. So, if you’re ready to say goodbye to fine lines and wrinkles, consider booking a consultation with a trusted practitioner in Glasgow and embrace the transformative power of dermal fillers. You’ll be amazed at the difference they can make in your skin’s appearance and your overall self-esteem.

As a natural skincare enthusiast, I’ve always been curious about the different paths skincare experts tread. Today, I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Heather Smith, a physician with a unique blend of medical expertise and a love for natural ingredients and clean beauty. So, let’s dig deeper into what she has to say about the blend of clinical and natural skincare.

Q: Dr. Smith, thank you for joining us. To start, why do you believe dermatologists often lean towards clinically-tested ingredients in their products?

Dr. Smith: Thanks for having me! Dermatologists have years of training focused on skin diseases. Naturally, they lean towards ingredients and formulations that offer rapid, tangible results for specific conditions. Their expertise is undeniable, and this clinical approach reflects their deep understanding of skin.

It’s important to remember that treating skin diseases is a medical role while working towards cosmetic improvements is not. Dermatologists are excellent at doing both, but they aren’t specifically better at cosmetics just by virtue of their training.

Q: In a lot of your blog posts, you mention that clinical products can sometimes be too potent for some users. Would you like to share your view on that?

Dr. Smith: Absolutely. While these formulations are effective, they often push the limits, having the highest concentrations of active ingredients. More isn’t always better and can be highly irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin. A clinical approach might overshadow the benefits of natural compounds when it comes to daily skincare.

As an example, benzoyl peroxide is great for acne, but it’s horrible for your skin barrier. Skin barrier damage can often worsen acne, so harshness sometimes perpetuates the cycle. Retinoids have a similar story. If a product is so harsh you can barely use it, then what’s the point? It doesn’t matter if it’s effective or if it’s too painful to use.

Q: As a physician with a natural inclination, how do you view skincare differently from a dermatologist?

Dr. Smith: My focus has always been holistic. Instead of zeroing in only on diseases or skin issues, I look at overall skin health. This perspective allows me to incorporate wellness and balance in my formulations, leading to gentle products that suit a broader spectrum of users.

I also don’t take a medical approach at all. When people email me for medical advice, I send them back to their doctor. Focusing on skin health and appearance is what I do. I like to keep my two worlds separated. With that said, a lot of natural products have great benefits for certain skin disorders like eczema, so there is a lot of overlap.

Q: There’s a growing debate about doctor-owned brands vs. non-doctor brands. How do you feel about this?

Dr. Smith: Physicians do have an edge when it comes to interpreting medical research. However, a doctor’s label isn’t a direct indication that they’re hands-on with product formulation. Many hire teams to design products for them. On the flip side, non-doctor brands, though lacking in medical expertise, often bring consumer-centric innovations to the table. Both have their strengths, but it’s essential for consumers to look beyond the label and evaluate products based on their actual merits.

Q:Clinical vs. Non-Clinical Skincare: What’s your take on this ongoing debate?

Dr. Smith: Honestly, the words “clinical” and “cosmeceutical” are just marketing terms with no true definition or meaning. Doctors treating skin disorders with prescription medications is an entirely different category from cosmetics.

I could put on my white lab coat and stethoscope and market my products as “clinical strength botanicals,” but I’m not into pushing hype. I want my products and corporate ethics to speak for themselves.

Q: Any final words for our readers who are torn between choosing a clinical approach and a natural one?

Dr. Smith: Listen to your skin. Understand its needs. Skincare is deeply personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It’s about finding the right balance that works for you.

Through this enlightening chat with Dr. Heather Smith, it became evident that the world of skincare is vast and diverse. Whether you’re a fan of clinical solutions or swear by natural remedies, there’s room for every approach. It’s all about understanding, researching, and choosing what resonates with your skin’s unique needs.

Dr. Smith is dual-certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care in Manitoba, Canada. As the summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, more and more people will take this opportunity to bask in the sun and enjoy the heat. It isn’t a secret that the sun is incredibly dangerous, but this doesn’t stop people from taking their health into their own hands and failing to protect themselves from these harmful rays. Your skin is an important line of defense against solar radiation, so follow these six tips to keep it strong and protected.

1. Find a Sunscreen You Are Happy to Wear

The most obvious solution to protecting your skin from the sun without preventing you from enjoying the summer is to wear sunscreen. Unfortunately, many people ignore this advice either due to a desire to develop a suntan or due to the physical discomfort of wearing a layer of sunscreen. This is why you should take the time to sample different products and find the ones that you are happy to wear and reapply regularly.

2. Choose Clothing to Protect Your Skin

To stay cool without risking sunburn, wear clothes that are both lightweight and that adequately cover your body. White linen, for example, is a popular choice during a hot summer for its cooling and protective abilities. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-resistant sunglasses are also an ideal part of your protective outfit.

3. Remember the Often-Overlooked Areas

Some parts of the body are easily missed when applying sunscreen. The lips, around the eyes, all around the neck, and the ankles must be sufficiently covered either by sunscreen or suitable clothing.

4. Consult a Skincare Professional

If you are concerned about how to keep your skin safe, get in touch with someone who can provide expert advice. Dermatologists are qualified to make healthy suggestions for you and your skin. If you don’t have time to see your GP in person at an appointment, take a look at nhsgp.net and talk to a doctor remotely about being referred to dermatology. You will be able to discuss your specific worries with an expert. They may also recommend specific products or treatments for you.

5. Take Note of Changes to the Appearance of Your Skin

Any changes to your skin should be addressed as soon as you spot them. New marks should be assessed by a dermatologist to determine whether or not they are potentially cancerous. Sun exposure can cause melanoma, so keep an eye on your skin to catch symptoms early.

6. Don’t Spend Too Long in the Sun

One of the best ways to protect yourself and your skin from sun damage is to limit how much time you spend in direct sunlight. Look for shade, and don’t spend all day in the rays if you have the option to go indoors. Although it is tempting to soak up the sun and enjoy the good weather, remember that your long-term health should be your priority.

Use these six simple tips to keep your skin healthy in the short and long term. While there are plenty of health benefits to spending time outdoors and in the sunshine, you should also take precautions to stay safe.
