This Winter you can bustle past those tired Christmas Markets where glorified hotdogs cost more than a Tube travel card and quite possibly taste like one – and into the Hoxton Basement where boozy product pioneers Smith & Sinclair have created quite the festive treat.

Promising a consumable art gallery – Smith & Sinclair have gone into cahoots with party drink, Lanique, and some of the world’s most inspiring artists like Terry Pastor, London Loom and Anja Predojevic to unveil the world’s first Flavour Gallery this November.

The experience promises to play with illuminating light, thermal reactions, colour changes and interactivity. With headsets to boot, the experience is wholly immersive. Of course, you can expect some innovative and bespoke cocktails that play to Lanique’s blend of ingredients.

We’ve been promised dib-dabs, inhalable cocktails and edible bubbles- and if that’s what they are happy to shout about imagine what surprises lie in store!

As you can imagine, your pioneering #TeamCoco will be there to check it all out on Press Night – so keep your eyes peeled on our social. But, get ahead of the pack and book your tickets now – they start from only £15 which wouldn’t even get you a ‘Genuine German Bratwurst’ and a ‘definitely-not-from-a-carton Gluhwein’ in a carpark in South London.

Head to designmynight.com/london/whats-on/food-drink/the-flavour-gallery for a better night out!

Did you know that if you choose to dine in some of the UK’s leading restaurants this winter you may be helping the homeless?

We are aware of StreetSmart in London and Leeds but #TeamCoco weren’t aware of all the other cities around the UK which support the StreetSmart campaign, and looking around there appears to be loads of cities involved including; Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester, Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow and others.

The House of Coco foodies are constantly dining out and about and it’s great to know that we’re supporting the homeless in our favourite city restaurants.

StreetSmart is such a simple concept, a discretionary one pound is added to the restaurant table’s bill, and because the sponsor Deutsche Bank covers all admin costs, the full one pound goes directly to the homeless charities in that city.

London has been running StreetSmart for 20 years this year, making it one heck of an anniversary year. The campaign has masses of support from the likes of Actor, Author, TV personality and all round good egg Stephen Fry, Ruth Rogers co-founder of River Cafe, and Yianni Papoutsis of MEATliquor, one of #TeamCoco’s fave UK burger joints.

We love that even whilst we’re dining in occasional gastro pubs, fine dining restaurants and Michelin star restaurants we are helping the homeless.

Check out some of the super famous restaurants and chefs that are part of the campaign; Harvey Nichols, MEATliquor, Nobu, Marcus Wareing, OXO Tower, Chino Latino, Salvo’s Leeds, China Tang, Cafe St Honore, Dinner by Heston, Groucho Club, Crafthouse Leeds, Marco Pierre White’s New York Italian, and hundreds more.

Search for StreetSmart online to find out more.

We’re pleased to acknowledge that one of #TeamCoco is the campaign manager for Leeds.

We’ll forgive you for shuddering at the idea of grabbing dinner around London Victoria. For years, the transport hub has been devoid of a dining option much more sophisticated than Pret and any afterwork catch ups would have been limited to chain pubs with sticky carpets and dead-eyed travellers waiting for the next train….

However, the regeneration of the area is well underway with new spots opening up here, there and everywhere. Nestled next to the futuristic Nova complex is the sumptuous The Rubens at the Palace with their incredible addition to the area, the newly refurbished, The English Grill.

The Rubens, as you’d expect, is a bijou, luxurious looking hotel on Buckingham Palace Road. As all great British secrets, its flowered exterior merely hints at the luxe that lies within. Past doormen and bellhops you’re greeted in the grand red carpeted, dark wood finished reception area and ushered to the perfectly lit drinking den, the Calvary Bar, where a jazz trio are crooning sophisticated covers.

Old Fashioneds come in geometric glasses with stylist bar snacks, but, wait, are those twiglets?! We’re coming to understand The Rubens as a place where comfort and cosy familiarity meet high end finishes and we LOVE it.

As we were seated at our booth in The English Grill we could see right into a brightly lit kitchen, past an opulent display of seasonal vegetables – again reinforcing this marriage of cosiness and high end, classic and cutting edge; a still life scene meets a bustling, modern chef station.

A basket of breads, including seed crisp breads and onion buns, appears with crudités and we snuggle into our seats, excited for the warming feast ahead. We had entered a very special world, just minutes from the evening commuter chaos at London Victoria and we already knew that we were going to struggle to leave.

To interrupt what we’re hoping is a rich depiction of this wonderful place…. can we just talk about the fact that The English Grill has not only a roast but also a pie for every day of the week. Let that sink in. You could treat yourself to a warming high-end roast on a Wednesday night, dressed up with the girls or get your parents to take you for five star pie and mash on a Saturday afternoon. Okay, back to where we were….

Starters range from the most impressive Burrata and Avocado on toast we’ve ever had (yes, we did have brunch for starters!) to smoked salmon sliced at your table from a trolley from a Wes Andersen movie. Feeling very autumnal and in need of real sustenance we plumped for the steaks for mains ; one a melt-in-the mouth Kobe Beef Fillet, the other an incredibly generous and supremely tasty Tomahawk steak with triple cooked chips and market greens. Never have we tasted steaks so succulent and satisfying.

With meat proudly coming from suppliers such as Aubrey Allen, The English Grill is definitely a carnivore’s paradise but with salmon from H. Forman and a classic Grilled Dover Sole also on offer, pescaterians will dine incredibly happy as well.

Alongside our seasonal feast we were treated to a flight of wines from the Red Carnation hotels’ owners’ vineyard; Bouchard Finlayson. Whites accompanied our starters; both oaked and non oaked and with our mains, reds of course! The real treat of the selection was trying the 2015 Hannibal against the 2014 variety which was so new to the restaurant that only the hotel owner had tried the bottle before us. Now is the right time to whisper, very quietly, that this #TeamCoco writer is no wine connoisseur, but the sommelier was so incredibly engaging and friendly that I not only loved the wines we tried but also learnt a little wine intel.

We wrapped our dining experience with two retro childhood delights; an IceCream Sundae and Eton Mess. The desserts were refreshingly simple and a wholesome cap on an incredible dining experience.

Glancing at our watches we realised we’d been happily dining away and chatting with the team for almost 4 hours and it was sadly time to leave. Sweeping up our winter coats and stepping out into bustling Victoria we felt as if we had experienced the ultimate luxury; of escaping the busy world outside even if just for the night. We had an incredible evening at The English Grill at The Rubens at the Palace and can’t wait for another occasion to escape there once again!

The English Grill is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Rubens at the Palace at 39 Buckingham Palace Rd, Westminster, London SW1W 0PS

Recently, Leeds’ bar and restaurant scene has had a pretty impressive revamp. From the redeveloped Greek Street to the brand new Victoria, our Leeds’ team are never short of options when it comes to eating out or sipping on cocktails. Since Issho opened earlier this year, we’ve all been checking out the fabulous Sashimi and sunning it up on their terrace – now they’ve launched a brand new Live Music night which is sure to give our evenings at the top of Victoria Gate an extra little something. We sent our girl Jenna Clarke to check it out….

“I LOVE roof top bars. Ever Since Angelica stole my heart when I first moved to Leeds four years ago, i’ve always thought that D&D (the holding company for Angelica, Issho & East 59th + more) have always brought a touch of London to the North. With gorgeous interiors, roof terraces to rival NY and extensive menus, it’s no surprise their bars are so popular here in Leeds. As soon as I heard D&D were opening their first Japanese inspired restaurant and bar right at the top of the new Victoria Gate development – I jumped for joy. After living a few years in the ‘Northern Quarter’ of Leeds, I was always annoyingly far away from Trinity and Call Lane etc, but thankfully the new Victoria is just a five minute walk away from my apartment – perfect.

After visiting for some amazing Sushi and Sashimi several times before, I loved Issho by day. It’s light, it’s airy and the warm wood and linen interiors is all very chic. However, I’d never seen the venue by night, when it really comes into it’s own. Arriving on the Friday night, we ordered a bottle of fizz and settled down at a table right next to the unique square bar, which is a key feature to the new Kori area of Issho. The lights were low and we were sat chatting to the Business Development Manager and also the Marketing Coordinator about the Kori Live show which was about to commence. Now, I was skeptical as sometimes live music in bars can be annoying and really distracting when you’re trying to talk to your friends or significant other, especially if it’s bad. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the music started.

The performance was the exact perfect mix of modern floor fillers and lounge music. Think Acoustic AlunaGeorge, the neo-soul duo Mali Hayes and George Jazzman Holiday hit the nail on the head when it came to covers of popular British House and Garage classics. I was constantly saying to my friend ‘oh my god I loveeee this song’ and Mali’s voice was absolutely to die for. From 9pm until 11pm every Friday, top musicians will be performing everything from jazz and blues to soul and stripped-back acoustic sets.

It was a really lovely backdrop to some pretty awesome drinks. My favourite was definitely the Ginger & Lychee Bellini , which was a great Asian take on some classic fizz and my friend loved the Sakura. Telling myself I was going to move onto something a little more Japanese, it had to be Sake. To ease myself into this unknown territory I started with the Umesho Tonic cocktail which was Plum Sake stirred with Fever-tree Mediterranean Tonic Water. It was so good I had two, or maybe three and then we migrated to the Terrace. Ordering some bar snacks (the Chicken Karaage is absolutely dreamy) we sat back and took in the last of Mali & George’s gorgeous set.

For anyone looking to upgrade their Friday nights, you have to check out Kori Live. It’s ideal for drinks with the girls before a big night out (calm before the storm!) or perfect date night. Bookings can now be made in Kori Bar, via their website or by calling 0113 426 5000.”

From hangover Sundays to sneaking out of work for that ‘morning meeting’ here at House of Coco HQ, we’ve tried and tested brunch in almost every country. With the restaurant scene in the North of England expanding almost every week, we thought we’d help you navigate around the city of Leeds’ hottest breakfast locations. All their ingredients are locally sourced, their eggs are free range and they’ve even teamed up with NorthStar to create their own unique blend of coffee. From American style pancakes to classic Yorkshire Breakfasts, word on the street is that they’re even bringing out a Bottomless Prosecco Brunch later this year. An absolute gem of a place and 100% worth a visit if you’re around the trendy suburb.

PICTURESQUE PUB THE PLEDWICK WAKEFIELD GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE

With new gastro pub the Pledwick Well Inn recently opening in one of Wakefield’s most affluent areas, diners had high expectations. With no expense spared on the refurbishment and a menu aiming to please all, we think they’re onto a winner. Read Review.

No longer are breweries only to be found in the far-flung ‘up-and-coming’ parts of the big smoke as the new ‘Tank Fresh’ brew pub from West London favourites, Long Arm Brewery , has landed in East London, just a quick sprint from Liverpool Street station. Welcome, friends, to one of #TeamCoco’s new haunts!

Let’s start with the vibes. On entering the industrial but airy pub you’ll be greeted by the shiny brewery part of the space which offers bespoke group tours. Not only is this beautifully presented but has a beautiful soul as well, championing how the beer industry can adopt zero-waste initiatives through innovative production and serving methods. An added bonus to their beers is that they are both vegetarian and vegan friendly. Beer facts and strong values? We might be in love.

In terms of what’s on offer; as a beer drinker you are in for a treat with classic Long Arm beers on the taps, regular creative brews, often dreamt up by the bar staff, which have included a stout that tasted like cookies (!) and a select number of exciting guest bottles.

On our trip we sampled a flight of the house beers including a quirky lemony belgian wheat beer, rounded off by a cheeky little IPA from Kiwi brewers, Yeastie Boys. It’s refreshing to find a brew bar with such a range and an accommodating approach to finding you a drink you’ll enjoy rather than peering down from its craft beer high horse…

Often the downfall of a good brew pub is the lack of decent options for your non-beer drinker buddies. Here at Long Arm Brewery, you have nothing to worry about. Not only do they distil their own gin but we sampled two of their delicious beer cocktails that would convert the biggest naysayer to the joy of a good brew; we’d particularly recommend their version of a lemon drop; sour and sweet in equal measures.

Throw in casual catch up enablers like table football and tasty american-style pub nibbles (like wings and blue cheese dip and beer battered onion rings) and Long Arm Brewery is the perfect spot to catch up with your squad after work.

We’ll see you at the bar!

Long Arm Pub & Brewery can be found at 20-26 Worship Street, London, EC2A 2DX

Here at House of Coco HQ, we love a new addition to our Saturday (or Thursday) nights. Whether it’s a new place to sip Bellinis with the girls or the latest hideout to visit with our latest man, we go wild for a launch. When the invite hit our mailbox for Leeds’ new hotspot ‘Red Door’, there was only one girl for it….our Lifestyle writer Jenna. Hear about what she found behind Leeds’ most anticipated doorway….

“After working in the bar and hospitality industry for the majority of my adult life, I like to think I know a thing or two about great venues. Whether that be reviewing exclusive launches to developing bars across Leeds, I know my Manhattan from my White Lady. Red Door is a great example of how to do a cocktail bar and how to do it well. With a concise menu of signature cocktails (don’t worry, they’ll make any classic for you too) and not a tacky umbrella in sight, it’s sure to be a new haunt for any mixology enthusiast.

Originally the home of Hirst’s Yard Bar and 51% Bourbon, Red Door has taken over the venue in such a way that it looks like it was born there. Walking down the side street that i’d most commonly travelled down on my way home from Space Nightclub back in my Freshers days – we were greeted by what looked like it had come straight out of Brooklyn, NY. A huge Red Door (how apt) with two glamorous hosts stood at the top of the steps, welcomed us away from the bleak Leeds weather. The exposed brick and moody lighting makes for the perfect ‘speak easy’ vibe that the brand definitely exudes.

Taking a seat, we were greeted with two glasses of Prosecco with edible glitter (very disco) and as quick as we could take a sip, two more drinks arrived! At this point we knew that Red Door were out to get us in the party mood, and it was definitely going to work. We were handed a sweet creation of gin, elderflower and blue curacao and were told how this cocktail was made to pay homage to the late founder of Living Ventures – the parent company of the bar. It’s nice when big corporate chains such as LV add in these personal touches, as it all makes it feel abit more real. Although their cocktail list is concise, it has the right amount of fun and unique elements to keep it interesting. From a Cointreau Fizz (one for those who like it seriously sweet) served up in a mini Cointreau bottle, to a cocktail genuinely served within a DISCO BALL, the Red Door likes to poke fun at gimmicky drinks and they do it in style.

My favourite cocktail of the night definitely had to be the Bakewell Sour which came with genuine Bakewell Tart as a garnish. I’m a sucker for a dessert cocktail, so this definitely stole the show for me. However, after all the sweet treats, I was craving something savoury and definitely something sour. Within 5 minutes, Red Door hooked me up. With a Tommy’s Margarita in one hand and a Chicken & Mushroom Pot Noodle in the other (YES, really) I was ready to carry on with the night. I absolutely love the idea of serving up Pot Noodles and regardless of whether it’s a gimmick or a quick way to get round licensing laws, it works. I can see a lot of Call Lane revellers stopping by here for a Pot Noodle with their Manhattans after a late night on the tiles, but maybe stay away if you don’t have a sense of humour…

Speaking to the hosts on the night, the Red Door is so much more than just a cocktail bar. With hosts to deliver table service to the ability to book out both floors, it’s the ideal destination venue for any celebration or late night rendezvous. Also, exposed brick is seriously in and the place is full of it. Following in the design footsteps of well established Leeds venues such as Epernay Champagne Bar and Shears Yard, the bar is tres shabby chic. If you like authentic stripped back interior and inventive drinks – this ones for you.

When House Of Coco were invited to 100 Wardour Street’s new ‘healthy breakfast menu’, we paused. Now, HoC are VERY particularly about breakfast – I mean, aren’t we all? And with London boasting some of the most delicious breakfast spots in the world, our standards are high.

Healthy is always the order of the day, but we like our mornings served up with a little pizzazz, too. Nevertheless, putting thoughts of spinach-and-egg-white-shakes aside, we swept on some mascara and headed to Soho one bright Tuesday morning.

We needn’t have worried. In this case, healthy was as far from hum-drum as you could possibly get. In fact, all ‘health’ in this menu was presented by stealth, leaving us feel both virtuous and very, very full.

There’s everything the discerning breakfaster could possibly want – from the sweet-toothed to the savoury-favourer. The menu isn’t scattergun, it’s considered and sophisticated, with surprising flavours and complete, mouth-watering attention to detail.

Their homemade granola, which usually makes mouths dry up at the mere mention of the word, is moreish and indulgent. The free-range eggs (try them on sourdough) are a treat, however you like yours on a morning. And if you’re a bit tired of the tried-and-tested Benedict, Florentine or Royal, go left-field…they’re also served with tabbouleh and quinoa, merguez sausage or #instafavourite avocado.

The Chorizo el Ranchero is tomatoey and smokey – a real heart-warmer, and the hash brown with nduja sausage, scallion savoy cabbage, egg and peppers packs a punch guaranteed to kickstart your metabolism.

There’s chia seeds, cracked wheat, crepes, savoury and sweet waffles – a whole dictionary of deliciousness with fresh, flavoursome ingredients crammed into every bite.

For us, the star of the show was the Acai Frozen Bowls. Usually only served up this authentically in Brazil, we challenge you to not fall head over heels. Go simple and sumptuous with the more traditional ‘Very Berry Breaky’, a bit more exotic with ‘Tango Mango’, which boasts mango, passion fruit, banana, coconut and crystallised seeds. Or rip up the rule book with the ‘Rococco’ bowl, packed with raw cacao, banana, Medjool dates, almond butter and white chocolate. You can literally feel the goodness trickle down to your tummy.

And, of course, no menu would be complete without a little temptation. Brioche your thing? Have it with fresh and freeze dried berries. American pancakes tickle your pickle? They’re served with creme fraiche and the loveliest compote imaginable. Then there’s the milk bread spilt and banana…need we say more?

Even with the dishes which clearly aren’t as kind to your waistline, there’s such care taken with this food that you, well, won’t…care, that is. You’ll leave feeling wholesome, happy and like you’ve experienced a real treat – and all before you sit down at your desk!

Disclaimer: You WILL want to order everything on the menu, so don’t count your chickens that you’ll be able to count your calories.
