Restaurants & Bars

Category

When we think of Casinos in the UK, we’re usually transported to 5am when our favourite bars have closed their doors but we still want to party. Luckily for the residents of Leeds, Victoria Gate Casino offers so much more than ‘just one more drink’. After officially opening it’s doors last year, it’s brought a taste of Sin City to the City Centre with lavish interiors, a huge bar and more events than you can shake a stick at. Victoria Gate are raising the stakes yet again with their brand new menu. So naturally, we sent our Leeds gal Jenna to check it all out…

“I’ll be honest, the only food i’ve ever eaten in Casino has definitely been fried. They’re clever guys at Casinos as there really is no need to leave the party for that post midnight snack, with chips and dips readily available at all times of the night. But what if I told you that you could have a gourmet dinner mere feet away from the Roulette table? The North’s very own Supercasino – Victoria Gate – can offer you just that.

Serving dishes right up until 1am all nights of the week, V Restaurant has a dish for every mood. Its fresh home cooked dishes stick to their Yorkshire Roots with the utilisation of local suppliers and classics such as Steak & Ale Pie and Fish & Chips. But this isn’t just pub grub into the early hours, theres a certain level of finesse that makes this Casino based restaurant stand out. From the comfortable but high-end interiors to beautiful large wine glasses and dedicated table service, you’d easily forget you were amongst slot machines.

On my visit, I took some time at the Curve Bar to try out some cocktails before sitting down to dine. From the usual Champagne and Spirits to creative twists on the classics, the menu is extensive and much more than you’d expect. Settling down with a Caiprihna and flicking through the menu, I was surprised how large their Wine & Sparkling selection was. Something that you’d only usually find at dedicated haunts such as Epernay Champagne Bar or Veeno, they’ve really pushed the boat out with their collection. Whether you’re sipping on fizz before you dine, or popping a bottle of Krug after a big win on the Roulette wheel – they’ve got you covered.

Wined and Dined

Making our way up some steps to the main ‘V Restaurant’ area, it was a great mix of plush and comfort. The lights were low and we settled in for three courses of mixed genre cuisine. For starters, I opted for the Chicken Satay Skewers, which were far larger than expected! As a waitress in a past life, I always used to feel guilty serving Chicken Skewers to guests as they’re usually minuscule and bone-dry. However, V Restaurant have nailed it with tender Chicken and a unmistakably nutty sauce that packed a punch.

Sipping on a large glass of Australian Merlot, I was more than excited for my main course. Naturally, I opted for a rare fillet Steak with a side of Peppercorn Sauce and crossed my fingers that it would live up to the hype. Luckily for me, it definitely did. A smiling waitress placed the plate in-front of me and I was taken aback by how good it looked. It sounds pretentious, but I never expected such a well put together dish to come out of a Casino kitchen. However saying that, Las Vegas manage to pull it off – so why not Leeds! Diving in, the Steak was cooked perfectly to order and the triple cooked Chips rivalled those of some of the most renowned Chophouses in Leeds. One thing I will say however, is that I wished I had ordered Surf and Turf – the prawns looked amazing. Before even considering opening the top button of my jeans, Dessert arrived. Now I’m not sucking up to the team at VG, but this Sticky Toffee Pudding could have easily gone toe-to-toe with my Grandmas. Divine!

Ending the night in the most appropriate way, we hit the Roulette table and had to have a cheeky go on the slots. Starting strong £20 up, my greed forsook me and I walked away with nothing but a full stomach and a great experience. Note to self: the House can always win, whether you’re in Caesars Palace or Victoria Gate Casino!”

Veganism is all the rage, and the dairy and livestock industries are in deep fear. Here at House of Coco, we know it’s gotten bad when our resident carnivore and serious foodie Jenna is even converted. Fair enough, she’s definitely not become a hard-core Vegan or dedicated herbivore, but Knave’s Kitchen almost had her giving up the chicken nuggets.

“Honestly. If you had told me last year that I’d be giving a Vegan restaurant my highest accolade (10/10 would indulge again) I’d have laughed at you. If you’d told me that this restaurant would be within a bar that has hosted some of my messiest Leeds nights, I’d have laughed even harder. I mean, why an earth would I enjoy something that is missing butter and cheese? Why would I give vegetables cooked in a bar a 10/10? Well, I can’t even begin to explain how wrong I was.

Oporto is an absolute cornerstone in the Leeds nightlife scene. After launching in ’96 it’s infamous for it’s naughty bartenders and even naughtier music. It’s full of shaggy indie boys hanging off the lampshades and girls in leather skirts pretending they actually LIKE being pushed into whilst lads belt out the Courteeners. Whatever you think of Oporto, I bet you’ve had a decent night in there. But have you had a decent meal? Launching back in March, Knave’s Kitchen has taken over Oporto’s newly refurbished second room where it serves up its 100% vegan menu. They’ve basically taken your junk food faves and replaced the meat with a substitute called Seitan.

Now Seitan may sound hellish, but it’s actually heavenly. Diving into their Leeds Indie Food Festival special (Buffalo Seitan) I was honestly speechless at how ‘chickeny’ it tastes. Seitan is a plant-based protein that looks, feels and tastes like real meat. Like chicken, it absorbs seasoning and flavours making it a delicious, plant-based alternative. It’s juicy, it’s got the right texture, and Knaves have got it nailed. Their entirely vegan menu features comfort dishes and deep fried delights that include curries, burgers and even a ‘Mill Hill’ kebab inspired by Leeds’ infamous after-hours eatery. Biting into it, I was regressed back to 5am with no shoes on after dancing the night away at Jakes Bar. A Kebab is one of those meals that can do that, and this did it without the guilt of what mystery meat you may be eating.

Customers can eat in, take away or even order via Deliveroo. Diners who choose to eat in can enjoy a menu of cocktails, vegan beers, craft beers and premium spirits curated by Oporto’s talented bar team. Oporto has always housed some of the most charismatic and talented bartenders in Leeds, so when we visited we had to check out their newest collection. From a genially named classic ‘Do you do Espresso Martinis?’ to a ‘Ham & Pineapple Daquiri’ they’ve covered everything they’re known for. Even being the randy buggers on the Lane with their homage to the Berghain, Berlin’s most notorious nightclub. Top tip: try and spot the hidden marital-aid on the page and you may just get a prize!

A true pioneer of Leeds nightlife, Oporto has undergone a refurbishment with glossy new interiors, drinks menu and seriously good food offering. However, they haven’t sold out and have retained the late night lunacy and rock & roll. This atmosphere has made them one of the longest lasting and most popular venues in the city, and that’s without even mentioning the jaegermeister on tap. Bravo Oporto, your newest prodigy is class and I’ll definitely be back for more.”

Knave’s Kitchen is open daily between 12pm and 10pm.

Team Coco love to visit the capital for an ultra luxurious afternoon tea, an evening filled with cocktails, and a hotel worth shouting about. So we sent our UK travel writer Rachel McAlley to spend 24 hours in the city where dreams are made.

London was calling!

I arrived at Kings Cross, and went straight for the tube to Marble Arch, it was a hot day in the capital so the tubes were relatively quiet, which meant it was an easy commute.

At Marble Arch I soaked in the beauty of the arch itself, with cars and buses whizzing past, I was the only person amongst hundreds where the world stopped for a second and I could enjoy being in London.

Just five minutes walk from Marble Arch was my stunning yet unassuming hotel for the night, The Arch London. I arrived early, and the front of house team were more than happy to check me in, look after my luggage, and offer me a cool drink until my room was ready. The doorman was a pleasure to be around, he kindly brought a glass of water, took my luggage, and directed me to a number of facilities that I may require while waiting.

I went for a little mooch around this beautiful hotel in the heart of Mayfair. Firstly I nipped to the ladies to freshen up and was thrilled to see Malin+Goetz products proudly on display for use, and secondly I sneaked a peak in the gym – not that I was going to hang out there at any point especially as my intention was to eat and drink for the duration of the visit, but still it was good to know I could!

Upon returning to the lounge area I was met by the doorman who informed me that my junior suite was ready. I was very much looking forward to seeing the room as I’d done a little research online, and every room at The Arch London looked simply perfect. It was after all named a top 20 Luxury Hotel in the UK at the 2017 Travellers’ Choice Awards!

We took the lift to the third floor and walked down a long corridor bouncing off the seriously thick shag-pile carpet – I could have slept on the carpet it was so comfy to walk on.

The door was opened into my junior suite, and I was shown around all the amenities including the gigantic 4ft wide TV, Sky and DVD devices, the Nespresso machine, bathroom lighting, and general in-room facilities (laundry, room service, mini bar, tea selection etc). And, one of the best features was that all soft drinks in the mini bar were complimentary, which is a rare attribute for a hotel to offer this level of generosity especially as it was stocked with juices, traditional lemonades, still and sparkling water, plus coke and diet coke.

I had a table booked in The Arch London’s restaurant for Afternoon Tea at Hunter 486 Restaurant and Bar, and it was almost time to experience the impending treat of mini sandwiches, cakes and scones.

I was greeted by one of the Hunter 486 members, and she directed me to my table, which was located in a private curtained booth complete with gorgeous seating and traditional china afternoon tea set. I was offered a glass of Taittinger Brut Reserve Champagne to start my afternoon tea.

Presented with the menu for the Royal Afternoon Tea, I chose a lemon verbena tea, which arrived promptly and in a beautifully delicate teapot. My afternoon tea plates arrived with a selection of savouries including; smoked salmon, lemon butter, cracked black pepper buckwheat blinis, and coronation chicken, baby gem, coriander cress on toasted sourdough, plus plenty of others including English Cheddar, egg mayo, and honey roast ham. A basket of warm scones were placed in front of me, both plain and fruit with little dishes filled with jam and clotted cream, and sweets including; chocolate orange tea cake, vanilla and passionfruit cheesecake plus a raspberry trifle, battenburg, and a strawberry and lemon curd tart. I was in afternoon tea heaven.

The presentation of the Royal Afternoon Tea was simply divine, and each of the individual delicacies were dainty, colourful, and full of flavour. My standout favourites were the seriously boss smoked salmon blinis, vanilla and passionfruit cheesecake, and the fruit scones. And I was insanely full.

Post afternoon tea, it was definitely time to explore London, so I set off to an afternoon meeting (via a well-know department store), I nipped for a quick blow-dry in Soho, and attended an evening Charity event at The Groucho Club where I drank one too many cocktails. I definitely had a jam-packed day in the city!

As evening grew darker I was happy to be retiring to The Arch London. I knew my plan of action was to run a hot bath and switch on the in-bath TV where I could relax and enjoy some trashy TV while luxuriating in scented bubbles. I was going to follow the bath with a horizontal stint on the sofa in my lounge area with music channels on the TV, a little writing on the laptop, and a cuppa from the in-room selection. I was then going to jump head first into the super king sized bed with huge soft pillows for a night of sheer Zzzzzzzz’s.

I pre-ordered breakfast in my room, I mean why on earth would I want to leave this beautiful suite when I didn’t have to!

I turned the TV on in bed to watch the morning celebrity news, checked Twitter and Insta, then I opted to listen to the DAB radio that was at the side of the bed instead of the TV, where I read one of the in-room travel magazines daydreaming of far flung places. The bed was ultra comfy, it was a massive struggle to drag my butt out if I’m being totally honest.

I would have usually been packed and ready to go into London but I knew that I could stay in my room until midday, so I took the decision to work from my room, base myself at the large office-style desk complete with leather-bound chair, and use the complimentary Wi-Fi to answer emails.

My breakfast tray arrived: a full English with toast and pastries on the side, fresh juice, a cup of hot chocolate and a selection of jams and honey. It was a beautiful work of art, and was even presented with a vase of freshly cut flowers.

Again the food was exceptionally good, my poached eggs were cooked to perfection, the toast slightly warm, and the hot chocolate steaming. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

After a morning of emails, and a relaxing start to the day, it was time to pack and embark on my next adventure.

The Arch London is just 2-minutes walk from Marble Arch, and is located on one of the quietest streets in the City of Westminster, so if you are looking to stay in London for business or leisure this is a great base; it’s a House of Coco fave.

Rachel McAlley was hosted by The Arch London, a member of the Pride of Britain Hotels collection (never more than 50 hotels, to guarantee quality and exclusivity). Royal Afternoon Tea costs £28 pp or £39 pp with a glass of champagne. An overnight stay costs from £280 per room per night (two sharing). Contact Pride of Britain Hotels on 0800 089 3929 (www.prideofbritainhotels.com).

Where do we begin with this amazing trip to Cheshire?

There are just so many elements of fabulousness for #TeamCoco to talk about when it comes to spending a weekend in the North West; from lovely spa hotels to dining out, local attractions to learning that Peaky Blinders was part-filmed in Cheshire, country pursuits, and an all important shopping trip to McArthurGlen Cheshire Oaks, the UK’s largest designer outlet. This certainly was going to be a jam packed visit.

Our UK Travel writer and #TeamCoco stalwart Rachel McAlley took the difficult decision to visit beautiful Cheshire for this weekend of total exuberance and adventure ☺

It started with being let loose at the ever-evolving McArthurGlen shopping location Cheshire Oaks. Currently, Cheshire Oaks is going through a major £40m expansion to increase the retail offering by a further 25-premium fashion and restaurant brands by this coming October; could this place get any better, we think not!

This shopping spree was going to be a good one, Rachel set off with her budget knowing that with up to 60% off the RRP she was going to get some proper bargains. She took in the busy sights of the high street stores including Next, M&S, Nike and Gap, she meandered through her top end high street favourites; Coast, Cath Kidston and Fossil, and strolled past some of her fave cafes and restaurants including; Yo! Sushi, Patisserie Valerie, and Ed’s Easy Diner, on to the quadrant where dreams are made of, the luxury and designer stores.

Not only did Rachel enjoy every single second running around the stores to find some serious discounted offers from some of the world’s most well-known super brands, but she spent time chatting to the friendliest shop managers and front-of-house staff she has ever had the pleasure to meet. From Lacoste to The Kooples, Lulu Guinness to Mulberry all the staff she encountered were truly pleasant to be around.

Reality hit home and Rachel had to end her time on this super shopping experience and move to her next location, but first she had to be dragged kicking and screaming from Ralph Lauren ☺

The weekend visitors next destination was a short drive from McArthurGlen, where they checked into Craxton Wood Hotel for the night and headed for a relaxing Elemis spa treatment along with a swim in the pool and brief stint in the sauna.

Back in the hotel room post massage and swim it was time for Rachel to unpack all the shopping spree bags from McArthurGlen Cheshire Oaks, play with all her new purchases, and prepare for an evening of fabulous cocktails and dinner in the hotel restaurant Craxton Wood Grill.

Rachel opted for a classic Prawn Cocktail to start with, after a rather nice glass of Kir Royale, and a couple of Cosmopolitans. She then chose Mushroom Ravioli for her main course, and cheese and biscuits for dessert, which ended the day perfectly.

Back to the room after a late night filled with cocktails and great banter with the other guests, and it was time to watch a bit of trashy reality TV (hoping for The Real Housewives of Cheshire)!

Morning encroached all too quickly, where she awoke surrounded by the previous day’s McArthurGlen purchases, much like you would expect to find a small child post-Christmas surrounded by all their toys!

It was time to pack the Cheshire Oaks purchases away and get ready for a day filled with rifle shooting and laser clay pigeon shooting in the grounds of Craxton Wood Hotel.

Rachel, who admits to not being gun savvy wasn’t expecting to win the laser clay event organised by the hotel events team, but she did, and she did it to much applause by the other members of the shooting party. #TeamCoco 1 other adventurers nil!

The day evolved from shooting clay pigeons and bottles to walking around the beautiful gardens of Arley Hall in Northwich with the head gardener, followed by a very cute afternoon tea complete with soup filled mini flowerpots! #totesadore

Arley Hall was one of the wicked locations for the filming of British TV Drama Peaky Blinders, and best of all the infamous bad lad Tommy Shelby had a major fight on the garden steps. The gift shop at Arley Hall now stocks Peaky Blinders beers for true fans to indulge in!

From Arley Hall, Rachel and her co-weekenders went for a little cruise down the Shropshire Union Canal where it meets the Manchester Ship Canal, with the team from the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. The team spoke about the history of the waterways and how food such as chocolate was transported many years ago. Who doesn’t need to know an odd fact about chocolate to wow our friends with, after all chocolate is life!

The weekend of plenty of excesses was about to end, after 2-days of shopping at the legendary McArthurGlen Cheshire Oaks, spa relaxation, food and outdoor pursuits at Craxton Wood Hotel, a peaky blinders tour and afternoon tea at Arley Hall, plus a canal trip down the waterways of Chester, it was sadly time to leave this glorious part of the UK and head home dreaming of the next visit to McArthurGlen Cheshire Oaks.

Rachel is counting down the hours until her next visit to Cheshire.

Here at House of Coco, there is a never shortage of new places to discover. We round up the best concept hotels in the world; from the Arctic Circle to the caves of Capadoccia. These amazing concept hotels are a must in any traveller’s bucket list – and are all definitely Team Coco approved.

IceHotel, Jukkasjärvi Sweden

Just 200 kilometres north of the Artic Circle, sits the Icehotel – a marvel of both architectural design and natural splendour. The first hotel of its kind, The Icehotel undergoes a metamorphosis every year, with its rooms and being built over the winter and melting away with the coming of spring. The Torne River supplies enough ice (about 4000 tons of ice every ten-seconds), for the Icehotel to rebuild itself every winter. Artists, architects, industrial engineers, and graphic designers from all over the world come to the small village of Jukkasjärvi to take part in the process.

If you are planning to visit the Icehotel in spring don’t fret – The hotel also offers a year round experience with Icehotel365 – all thanks to its solar panels. Icehotel365 is a sprawling 2100 square metre space that houses nine deluxe suites, eleven art suites, a private sauna, and an ice bar — maintained at a constant negative five degrees celsius. In collaboration with Hans Eek, Swedish architect and sustainability designer, Icehotel365 runs from the solar power gained from the midnight sun; thus combining state of the art architecture with a minimal carbon foot print. A unique and sustainable concept that Team Coco can definitely get behind.

Baraza Resort & Spa, The Zanzibar Collection

There are not a lot of destinations in the world that beget the same magic and mystery as Zanzibar. In this idyllic island paradise, the Zanzibar Collection’s selection of luxury five star properties undeniably make for the ultimate island getaway.

On the South Eastern coast of the exotic island, the Baraza Resort & Spa is carefully designed to reflect he island’s stunning natural beauty with the history and culture of the Omani Arabs who inhabited this tropical paradise. The resort boasts thirty luxury villas, each one evoking the magical era of sultans; and filled with exquisite luxury amenities. They also offers a gorgeous Yoga in Paradise concept that combines the benefits of Yoga with an array of island activities including; scuba diving, Swahili cooking lessons, swimming with dolphins, and spa treatments at the world-renowned Frangipani Spa. The Baraza Resort & Spa is definitely on top of our list for a rejuvenating retreat in one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Hotel Heureka, Venice Italy

The recently opened Hotel Heureka is a gorgeous new design hotel concept in Venice, combining grandeur and history. The property dates back to the 16th century, and the renovation has taken into account all the possible modern luxuries any discerning traveller would desire. If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to live the life of Venetian nobility, then the Hotel Heureka has the perfect atmosphere for you.

Located in the vibrant north western Sestiere of Cannaregio, (it’s the Notting Hill of Venice) the Hotel Heureka lets you experience the decadence of a traditional Venetian palazzo, with its gorgeous Italian mosaics and vaulted ceilings. The hotel overlooks the Madonna dell’Orto canal, and an elegant stone balustrade decorates its classic façade. Built around the layout of a “portego” which is a typical Venetian passage, the Hotel Heureka masterfully maintains the unique dictates of traditional Venetian architecture; and within its classical walls, a twist of contemporary design plays out. With ten beautiful rooms, each one distinct in character with Rubelli silks at the windows, Lacroix tapestries as bedheads, and the most sensational bathrooms, you can be sure that a stay here will be unique. Rather like the art in the house, by Julian Kohl. So, if you ever find yourself in Venice, call in for a fresh Spritz in the private garden; it’s the best place to immerse yourself in the grandiose spirit of this magical city.

Museum Hotel, Capadoccia Turkey

The Museum Hotel sits in a very special region in Cappadocia, and is undeniably one of the most extraordinary hotels in the world. Built within the picturesque stone cliffs of the Tekeli District, the Museum Hotel is a combination of thousand year old historical ruins, natural caves, and stone houses — all impeccably restored for the modern age.

No two rooms in the Museum Hotel are the same. Each of the hotel’s thirty rooms are built from natural yellow stone, and filled with priceless antiquities from the Ottoman, Seljuk, Roman, and Hittite periods. Surrounded by all this history, it is no wonder that the Museum’s Hotel “living museum” concept lives up to its name, with the hotel being the only Relais & Chateaux accredited property in the whole of Turkey. Not to mention, each room boasts panoramic views of the inimitable Capdoccian landscape; where you can see Mt.Ecriyes, the Red Valley, and Love Valley from the distance. Definitely Team Coco approved.

Levin Iglut-Golden Crown, Finland

Theres are very few natural wonders as mesmerising as the Northern lights; and at the Levin Glut-Golden Crown, not only do you get the best view of this rare and beautiful sight, you also get the best glass igloo experience that the Finnish Lapland has to offer.

The family operated Levin Iglut Golden crown is located at a dizzying 340 metres above sea level, at the very top of the Levi Fell and with picturesque views of the Fell Landscape. Their twenty-four glass igloos are roofed over with heated glass and are fully equipped with luxury amenities. If you are travelling in a bigger group, then the Northern Lights House, which features two large double bedrooms, a private sauna and jacuzzi, and a panoramic window for Northern lights viewing — is perfect for you. It seems that every aspect of the Levin Iglut takes advantage of its gorgeous natural surroundings. The hotel’s restaurant, Aurora Sky, allows guests to enjoy locally sourced Scandinavian flavours with an unobstructed view of the spectacular icy landscapes below.

Niyama Private Islands, Maldives

Team Coco loves an island getaway, but the Niyama Private Islands disrupts the luxury island concept over its head with its unparalleled set of culinary experiences. Ever wondered what it was like to have a gourmet meal at the bottom of the sea? Niyama Private Island shows you how.

Set across two private islands connected by a single wooden bridge that traverses the Indian Ocean, this special Maldivian resort in the South-Western atoll of Dhaalu takes barefoot luxury to the next level. The twin islands are appropriately named Play and Chill – each one with their own distinctive feel and exclusive dining experiences. It is an understatement to say that the culinary concepts on offer at Niyama Private Islands are some of the most unique in the world. Tribal is the only African restaurant in the Maldives, while Edge is the hotel’s floating fine dining restaurant set 1 km out at sea. Nest is an Asian fusion restaurant set high above in the tree tops that offers a gravity defying dining experience like no other. On the other end of the spectrum is Subsix – an underwater restaurant that allows Niyama Private Island’s guests to eat at the bottom of the Indian ocean. Niyama Private Islands not only allows guests to experience the paradisiacal surroundings of the Maldives, but also invites them toe expand their culinary boundaries, and should definitely be on any food-lovers bucket list.

As you know Team Coco are always on the lookout for the best food around, whether in warmer European climates such as Italy or the French Riviera, or long haul in Hawaii or the Caribbean, yet sometimes nothing beats the allure of the British seaside, and where better to get some seriously tasty fish dishes than fresh from the Yorkshire coast.

It was a typical rainy Sunday afternoon on the East Coast; a bit breezy, and a bit miserable but all that was about to change dramatically when our writer Rachel McAlley stepped foot inside Whitby’s new kid on the block, The Star Inn The Harbour.

The Star Inn The Harbour is the brainchild of Michelin Star Chef Andrew Pern, and it’s simple to see why the restaurant is always gaining rave reviews from food critics and on Trip Advisor. From the moment we arrived to the minute we left our table; the service, the ambiance, the location and the food was simply great.

When in Rome and all that, it would be rude not to have fish and chips obvs! We ordered the Traditional Seafood Cocktail and the Potted Chicken Liver Pate to start, followed by the revered Fish & Chips and the Fishmongers ‘Pye’.

The presentation of the seafood cocktail was what you’d expect to find in a Michelin starred restaurant not in a Whitby establishment, it was; fancy, fabulous, and there was lots going on. The pate was served unusually with fruit bread (golden sultana tea loaf to be exact), which gave it an unexpected zest of flavour along with gin-poached gooseberries, yum.

The fish and chips were worthy of signing angels; line-caught flakey white haddock, sexy crispy batter, and chips cooked in beef dripping, we were in seaside fish and chip heaven. Is there anything that beats fish and chips on the northern coast of England?

It wasn’t just our table making food noises when the fish and chips were placed in front of us, there seemed to be a groaning sound from the table next door, and when we dared to look around, their entire table of four were poring over the seaside fave too! We were in good company.

We also can’t forget the Fishmongers ‘Pye’; filled with salmon, haddock, and cod also bursting with samphire and peas, it was a decadent creamy pie topped with flat leaf parsley mash and a rather majestic king prawn. On the side it was served with a dinky salad of quail egg and oak smoked salmon.

The question was whether we opted for a dessert or not, our tummies already filled with seafood and chips. Of course we got dessert, and boy oh boy were we happy that we did.

Lemon Tart was calling, especially with the raspberry sorbet, and the most fabulous of all was the Chocolate & Boozy Cherry Glory, which came served in a knickerbocker glory style glass packed with ice cream, cherry jelly, maraschino cherries and lots of Sortie Brandy. This was a ‘shout it from the rooftops’ kind of seaside treat, praise be to the lord of ice cream and boozy jelly desserts!

It was an excellently priced menu at just £20 for 2-courses and £25 for 3-courses (with a small supplement for the traditional seafood cocktail). Very reasonably priced for a Sunday in a busy seaside town.

Whitby we love you, The Star Inn The Harbour thank you and we’ll be back!

As #TeamCoco are official Nomads, it’s easy to forget where we usually hang our YSLs. However, London is our official spiritual home and we love to celebrate the hidden gems of this fine city. Just a 2 hour train journey away from the main Northern hub of Leeds, we sent our Travel & Lifestyle writer Jenna to live as a tourist for one very busy 24 hours….

“I don’t even care if it’s basic, I LOVE London. No matter how many times I stay, live or walk around this amazing city, I’m always finding new corners and places i’ve never seen before. Some people don’t like the claustrophobia or busyness of the Capital, but I absolutely buzz off it. There’s a reason London is the capital, as it really is a hugely superior city. The Tube is efficient and cheap, the bar scene is a tangle of new innovation and history seeps out of every single cobble. Alongside the iconic Dorchester and Instagram-worthy Aqua Shard, there are so many different experiences you can have in the city. From uber modern hotels to rival Germany and Pizza that transports you to Napoli, here are my hottest recommendations on how to make the most of the city.

Where to stay – citizenM, Tower of London

If you’re looking for something different, but you won’t go below 4 stars, you have to check out citizenM. I’d heard the hype about these guys for sometime now, as they’ve got properties all over Europe and beyond. They’re becoming known as the rebellious teenager of the hotel industry as they’ve taken 4 star luxury and shook it upside down for it’s lunch money. Walking into the lobby of citizenM Tower of London, the interior is perfect for a hotel that’s directly above a tube station. It reminds me of the Sex Pistols mixed with a dash of London Chic and as soon as I walked in, I was totally into it. What I love about this brand is that they definitely don’t take themselves too seriously and it’s so patriotic that is almost oozes ‘God Save The Queen’.

Aside from the lobby which is a feast for the eyes, the rooms are surprisingly neutral. They’re a hearty mix of the Japanese pod hotels and a luxury retreat, as they’ve kept it compact, but haven’t skimped on the bedding. Throwing myself onto the XL Super-kingsize bed and looking out the huge wall-to-wall window, it felt weirdly spacious. Considering the entire room is probably smaller than my bathroom at home, they’ve got the spacing just right.

One thing I will say however, is you better be veryyy close with the person you’re sharing with. The bathroom (although equipped with a seriously luxe rainfall shower) is a perspex pod in the middle of the room. Yes, it may be slightly erotic to watch your significant other showering whilst you lay across the bed, but how about the other use of the bathroom? All I can say is that going out into the hallway in my robe at 4am after lots of Champagne, in the fear that I may break wind, wasn’t my finest hour! Style 10, Privacy 0.

Aside from the fear of who you fancy hearing your bodily functions, the hotel is super well thought out. For instance, it’s at the top of the hotel that you will discover the most spectacular space of all. The cloudM bar has an outstanding terrace and is a wraparound double height space offering what must be one of the most dramatic views of London’s skyline with the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Shard. We had a glass of Champagne as we looked out over the view, and although the well appointed balcony had closed by this point, it was still a great experience.

Linking back to the room design, they even have a cute little tablet that controls everything, including the mood lighting. There is a very entertaining setting for Romance which turns your room into red-light-district Rouge, which I couldn’t work out was sexy or terrifying! After our night draped in Amsterdam worthy light, we spent the morning lounging around in the big bed watching Saturday Kitchen and looking out the window over London. When we got round to venturing down for breakfast, we’d have be forgiven for thinking we were at Ikea’s foodcourt, but it works. It’s simple buffet style dining, but with Smoked Salmon and Spanish Cured Meats on offer, I was sold.

All rooms start from £109 with a maximum rate of £269

Must see – The ‘Instagramabble’ toilets at Sketch

Probably the most famous toilets in London, Sketch really pushes the boat out in their design. I’d always seen these strange white pods on Instagram, and after you have visited, you can understand why everyone takes so many pictures. The toilets are a collection of large white eggs in a room accessed by a split staircase that is adorned with the best smelling candles in London. When you reach the famous eggs, they actually contain individual toilet cubicles. Although this has something slightly Alien Vs Predator/Big Brother about it – it’s actually hilarious.

We also grabbed a drink at the bar just under the stairs and would definitely recommend a Tanqueray and Aromatic Tonic whilst taking in the sights. A visit to Sketch is completely overstimulating, but you’ll love it.

Where to Eat – Eat some pretty awesome carbs at Pi Pizza in Clapham

Luckily for you Londoners, Winchester have just flung some pretty sweet dough your way. The original Pi pizza was born back in 2014 from a simple idea and a big dream. Following a stint working in a traditional Florence pizzeria, restaurateur Rosie Whaley was inspired to serve simple, exceptional and honest food in a vibrant atmosphere. After three successful years in Winchester, Pi has now brought a slice of pizza perfection to South West London with an 85 cover restaurant on Battersea Rise, a stone’s throw away from the trendy Clapham Common. Running from the tube station to not miss our reservation, I was relieved to find the quaint Pi Pizza just off the high street. Sitting down in their unique indoor-outdoor themed dining room with a perfect Aperol Spritz in hand, it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Poring over the menu whilst nibbling on a mixed bruschetta board, the menu is small but perfectly formed with serious Italian flavours.

Now, I will say that i’ve eaten Pizza all over the place. From crazy good creations in Milan to my absolute homeboys, the Dough Boys in Leeds – I bloody love the stuff and like to think I know my authentic Naples from my Chicago Town. Now what Pi does differently, is that you really have to go big or go home.Pizzas are available as standard size; with the option for half and half, or as a 20 inch base to share with two or three menu options. Naturally, we went for the three.

  • Serrano ham, I.O.W plum tomatoes, white truffle oil, mizuna – Seriously tasty and really packs a salty punch. The white truffle oil also gives unmistakable depth.
  • Pork sausage, sliced desiree potatoes, garlic, thyme, caper crumb, Nocellara olives (white base) – God help anybody’s stomach who gets a whole 20 inches of this one. It’s absolutely delicious, but so so filling. One for a hangover or if you’ve got the munchies, we were almost finished off after one slice!
  • Rosary goats cheese, crispy kale, caramelised red onion (white base) (v) – Our favourite of the lot, the goats cheese was a perfect level of melt and the caramelised onion really cut through the richness. 10/10 would definitely have again.

I met up with my brother for a few hours to help me tackle this serious carb-loading sesh, and thank god he was there! All pizzas can be pimped with whole balls of Burrata Pugliese or Bufala Mozzarella but we didn’t dare add anymore players to the game. We bravely finished our experience with a Salted Caramel Tart and waddled out the door whilst thanking our waiter for really attentive service. If you’re in the Clapham district, and have a big appetite, you’ve gotta check this place out!

If you’re Solo – have some peace at the Canal near Paddington

A hidden gem that I discovered (in-between meeting our sub-editor/megababe Caoilfhionn and my party partner heading back to Leeds) was how peaceful the canal is just beyond Paddington Station. It’s home to some pretty awesome canal boats, including one that’s actually a cafe. Darcie & May is part of the Daisy Green collection which boast some of the coolest coffee and brunch houses in London.

The Darcie & May Green branch is situated directly outside Paddington Station on the Grand Union Canal. The boats are literally floating pieces of art, designed exclusively by the ‘godfather’ of British pop art, Sir Peter Blake. Pop in for reinvented classics such as smashed avocado on charcoal bread with Aleppo chilli and watch the world go by. After grabbing some lunch I sat by the river and just took it all in. It’s rare to find peace and quiet in London, but this place comes pretty close.

If you’re with the girls – Grab some beers in Camden

On my last few daylight hours in the city, I headed to the uber-cool Camden Town district for a little bit of laid back boozing. I’d never been here before (the closest i’d got was drinking a pint of Camden Hells lager in Leeds) but absolutely loved the vibe. You could easily jump from pub to pub all day long, especially in the sunshine. Hop on the tube from wherever you’re staying and be sure to visit this vibrant part of town. Grab a few pints and a baked Camembert from The Edinboro Castle and sit outside in the pods before you head back to Leeds. Thank me later!

What are your favourite ways to spend time in London? Let us know on @house_of_coco.

Imagine drinking a delicious gin cocktail listening to the relaxing sounds of the sea whilst you gaze upon the stunning vistas of some of the most luxurious properties in the world. You could be anywhere – the South of France, the Balearics, or even the Caribbean, but instead you are cruising in a vintage boat along the beautiful coast of Dorset.

Welcome to Sandbanks! One of the many points of interest you can enjoy on the route of the Dorset Cruises Artisan Gin Cruise which takes place on the adorably named ‘Dorset Queen’ which takes both locals and tourists alike on a fascinating water-based tour of the local area.

This is not just any ordinary boat ride, this is a gin-inspired vintage boat cruise that explores not only the local coastline, but many of the locally-distilled gin brands that have established themselves in recent years.

For this particular gin tour however, we were introduced to Fresha, a delicious strawberry flavoured gin that is produced in the Andalucía region of Southern Spain. Their guest distiller Jon provided us with some handy background knowledge on the gin as well as a mini-masterclass.

It is the world’s only premium five strawberry gin which is made from juicy and ripe strawberries from Huelva in Spain. It also contains lemon and orange peels from Seville as well as vanilla and star anise from Southern Spain.

As well as serving us their award-winning gin, we were also provided with some samples of their delicious strawberry jam infused with gin, which you can’t help but try!

We were also taught a great technique for drinking gin, apparently you use a similar approach to how you taste wine. 80% of our taste buds are evoked by smell alone. You swirl it around your glass (which you hold by the stem) and inhale. After you take a sip, you exhale to really take advantage of the smell and taste.

Whilst we did try it neat (which you can do with fruit-based gins), it does taste even better with flavoured tonic water such as the Double Dutch Cucumber and Watermelon mixer which really sets off the glorious flavours of the strawberry gin beautifully. Each of the mixers compliment and enhancing certain botanicals in each of the gins that you mix them with.

The good people at Fresha have said that when it comes to their strawberry flavoured gin, you don’t necessarily need a garnish, but if you do, that it is best to opt for fresh strawberries.

As well as working our way through this bottle of pink loveliness, we were also served gin-inspired canapés and were each allocated three tokens which we could use at the onboard bar in exchange for a selection of delicious cocktails (all of which were naturally gin focussed!)

We were sat at the bottom of the boat inside (despite it being a pleasant evening here on the South Coast), but there were lots of seating options on the upper, fore and stern decks where guests can really soak up the atmosphere and take in the magnificent views.

The Dorset Queen leisurely navigated around the stunning coastline of Dorset, first heading towards the western shore of Brownsea Island (which is certainly worth a visit if you love wildlife and nature.)

We then cruised around Poole Harbour passing the likes of Long Island, Round Island, Furzey Island and Green Island.

After cruising past Millionaire Row in Sandbanks (where you can see some of the most amazing mansions) we then took a neat swoop past Brownsea once again and sailed down the North Channel, passing the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Salterns and nearby Parkstone Bay Marina.

In the final part of our cruise, we passed the Port of Poole and Moriconium Quay before heading back to Poole Quay to disembark.

The Dorset Cruises Artisan Gin Cruises runs twice a month and takes place on Friday’s, Please check their website for availability. However, on Sunday 20th May, they are hosting an exclusive cruise in conjunction with with Rick Stein, Pommery Champagne & the Oyster Farmers of Poole to offer a one-off Champagne and Oysters cruise where you can sail over the Oyster beds of Poole Harbour’s Balls Lake and discover the journey that the local oysters take, from seed to delicacy. There is limited availability, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

#TeamCoco is bonkers about Barbados! Not only does it hold a special place in our Editor, Laura Bartlett’s heart, but 70,000 travellers in 144 countries, also agree that Barbados is the best place in the world for visitor satisfaction (according to a recent Destination Satisfaction Survey). Beating bucket list beauties like Seychelles and Bermuda, Barbados is a must visit, and although we love the spotless white-sand beaches, our Caribbean Reporter, Kered Clement shares her top recommendations on where to stay, where to eat and what to do in Barbados outside of the sandy feet and salt life.

WHERE TO STAY

We’re almost sure that the renewed Waves Spa and Hotel by Elegant Hotels, made its contribution to Barbados ranking highest in the Destination Satisfaction Survey accommodations category. If like us, you’re lucky enough to be greeted by a front desk clerk as lovely as Veronica, your stay along the Platinum West Coast at this all-inclusive spa and hotel is sure to be a pleasant one.

The beige concrete entrance isn’t much to look at, but don’t be quick to judge a book by its cover. A trot down a few steps leads to an appealing assortment of natural textures in palettes inspired by paradise, enhancing its eco, chic beach vibe. The perfect blend of rustic and contemporary furnishing will have you pottering about in the foyer for far too long, but we’d recommend you waste no time taking in the awe-inspiring views, which stimulate a state of well-being. And wellness for the mind, body and soul is positively encouraged when the attentive front desk team talk you through the sunset yoga and meditation offering and complimentary spa treatments depending on your stay and room type.

If you can pull yourself away from the beach tones of your oceanfront room, complete with a hard-to-leave King-sized bed, power shower, fresh tropical fruit, fully-stocked mini bar and inseparable balcony view. You’ll find serenity on the spa-side of the property, with overhanging palms covering an oasis whirlpool, and a pathway leading to peace and tranquillity at The Spa at Waves.

We’ll always remember the mesmerising views and chirping birds that would visit us during breakfast at Seascape Restaurant. But what charmed us most of all, was the distinguished customer service that exceeded expectations and never dropped the bar at any time. Pick Waves Spa and Hotel for excellent service, a fresh, modern setting and a convenient location between Grantly Adams International Airport and Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados.

WHERE TO EAT

Three coastal themed restaurants along the renowned platinum coast that you must experience!

The Cliff Beach Club

We have The Cliff Owner, Brian Ward and Guadeloupean bred Chef Jérémy Dupire to thank for the birth of this French “brasserie” style experience. No other coupling could have come up with a concept that merges the most exquisite cuisine from France, the Mediterranean and the West Indies, resulting in appetisers like an avocado salad with citrus segments and passion fruit dressing. And with mains like spicy lobster risotto with parmesan, tomato and scotch bonnet pepper, the menu is an explosion of colours and flavours, with a hint of each continent in every dish.

In comparison to The Cliff, a multiple award-winning restaurant, The Cliff Beach Club is laid-back luxury, with no compromise on the million-dollar view, perhaps one of the reasons why one stay at Sandy Lane resulted in relocation for Chef Dupire. Do, The Cliff Beach Club for the attentive staff, snap-worthy views, decor and dishes, the irresistible photo opp with the signature blue van and a Sunday night best described as Ibiza in Barbados.

The Tides Restaurant

From the front seat of your car to the seat of our waterfront table, this renowned restaurant on the West Coast of Barbados gives all its guests V.I.P treatment. And much like the high calibre service, the surrounding decor feels like a walkthrough on a hypnotising Hollywood movie set. With so much beautifully thought out themes, particularly the admirable large tree trunks saved during construction, you’ll be drawn to every inch of detail that adds to the overall wow factor.

The Catch of the Day, often Baracuda comes highly recommended by co-owner and Executive Chef Guy Beasly. During the brief wait for dessert, walk it all off in the Tides Art Gallery, featuring captivating artwork by the local, regional and international artist. Co-owner and Managing Director Tammy Beasly, who is mostly responsible for the eloquent decor wanted to deliver a dining experience that is much more than excellent service and decorated plates. This will be evident through your hosts, who’ll be as happy to double up as a photographer while ensuring your every want and need is catered to.

Arrive with room for a 3-course meal so you can clear the plate of every dish by this restaurant team made up of culinary leaders. Our slow braised lamb shank was lapped up as soon as it slid off the bone, and the baked vanilla cheesecake didn’t stand a chance!

If like us, you happen to perch at the bar when the bartenders are working on the frequently updated drinks menu, then you’ll be in for a treat of rum punch after punchline leaving you in fits of laughter.

Photography by Diana Lewis and Kered Clement

It’s safe to say ‘treat yourself’ is a frequently repeated mantra here at House of Coco HQ. Given the chance to indulge we nearly always will, except this time it was gloriously, guilt-free. We sent our travel and lifestyle writer Fleur Rollet-Manus to check out the W London’s 100% vegan menu as part of their new dining series with Ravinder Bhogal.

We first fell in love with Ravinder Bhogal when she won Gordon Ramsay’s F Word way back in 2007, we continued our love affair as she opened her Marylebone restaurant Jikoni and now she’s won us over all over again with her vegan menu at the W London’s Perception Bar, part of their new dining series.

Picking up where Magnus Reid left off the 100% vegan menu is a homage to her niece, who Ravinder admits is more like her best friend. When her niece turned vegan it helped Ravinder to think about food in a more creative way. “I have really enjoyed the process of working with vegetables, fruits, grains and pulses without having to rely on the safety blankets of meat and dairy.” The menu is a love letter to her niece and we’re swooning over it.

A colourful array of different textures and spices, with many dishes bound to be things you haven’t tried (or heard of) before. It’s adventurous without being too daring, catered perfectly for grazing and screaming to be shared with friends. Whether your vegan or not the menu is an explosion of Indian and Kenyan flavours ready to tackle any of the misconceptions that vegan food is simply bland tofu and carb-ladden starters.

Our advice? Order heavy and take your time picking through the mountain of dishes you’ve ordered. The portions sizes are slightly deceptive and will quickly fill you up, but it just means you’ll have longer to linger over the crisp (also 100% vegan) Chardonnay.

The Crispy Beancurd and Rice Noodle Summer Rolls were light, fresh and just on the right side of crunchy. It’s a great mini-plate if you’re not ordering traditionally and just want something to snack on. The Besan Fritters and Coconut Yoghurt completely divided our table. Besan is a chickpea flour making the dish quite heavy and the coconut gives it a bircher-type consistency. One side of the table loved the texture in comparison to the crunch of the rolls, whilst the other felt it was a bit too starchy for a starter. If you’re a fan of granola and yoghurt combos then this is definitely the starter for you and we both agreed it was ideal for nibbling at.

Nutty, smooth, and just the right side of thick, with perfect amount of chunky pumpkin the Cheela, Pumpkin & Cashew Curry is a great entry dish for those who want to expand their tastebuds without committing to tofu. Order two portions of the Coconut Kari, Potato, Onion and Pea Bhajis as they’re perfect for scooping up the rest of the curry.

Make sure you’ve left room for dessert. As we said, we like to indulge so ordering every dessert on the menu (in the name of research of course) is practically second-nature. The Charred Pineapple was super sweet, but cleverly offset by the tart lemongrass sorbet and the classic sugary-sour combo was devoured in seconds. The Safron, Mango and Passion Fruit ‘Cheesecake’ was obviously void of all dairy, but you’d never realise as the creamy texture was so cleverly constructed we asked for seconds. Lastly we’d like to write an ode to those doughnuts. Practically salivating as we stuffed not one, but three into our gluttonous gobs. Whatever sorcery Ravinder Bhogal conducted we’d like to applaud as we’ve fallen head over heels with them. Not too sweet nor too sugary the Rose, Coconut and Cardamom Doughnuts were incredibly moorish and a brilliant end to a hearty feast.

Meat-free Mondays? Totally-Tofu Tuesdays? Veganism may be a diet fad or it may be a lifestyle choice, but one thing is for sure; the W’s new dining series is a culinary experience that’ll leave you full, satisfied and pondering whether you really could go meat-free. It’s a guilt-free indulgence and isn’t that the best kind?

Available Monday – Sunday, 6PM – 11PM at The Perception at W London.
