One of Yorkshire’s finest 5* hotels recently launched their fine dining experience of afternoon tea at The Grand, York and #TeamCoco were one of the first to enjoy this iconically British tradition.

Visiting any city on a hot and sunny day is always a treat, but there’s something extra special about visiting York in North Yorkshire, with its unique history, glorious architecture and general grandiose. Looking up at the majestic The Grand, York and at the city walls opposite gives a sense of how this city once looked in a bygone era.

We entered the bustling hotel’s foyer on a Friday lunchtime, it was filled with a mixture of foreign travellers, businessmen and women, families on holiday, day trippers, residents, and diners, all enjoying the beautiful surroundings of The Grand, York and all that the city has to offer.

After being directed to Hudsons, the hotel’s fine dining 3AA rosette restaurant, we were greeted with smiles from the restaurant manager and were and shown to our table for afternoon tea.

Our host introduced us to the luxury tea box by Newby Tea, a British tea brand who sources only the finest teas from across the world. We were given a tour of the teas through each individual scent, from Earl Grey and Cinnamon Teas to Oolong and Peppermint Teas; this wasn’t just for our enjoyment as every guest was taken through this process before ordering the perfect tea. We opted for The Grand’s own Hudsons Breakfast Blend Tea, which was full-bodied and malty, and an Elderflower and Lemon infusion, which gave a punchy lemon flavour and left an elderberry taste in the mouth. The tea arrived with a personal timer, to give the perfect brew of 3-minutes and 5-minutes!

The afternoon tea menu read:

Chilled tomato tea – smoked sea trout with red onion and chives on brioche – pickled cucumber and dill on sesame sourdough – Victorian egg mayonnaise toast sandwich with egg yolk fudge and cresses – scones selection – pistachio cake with chocolate cream and strawberry – caramel gold choux bun – banana bread with hazelnut and truffle – cheese trolley (supplement)

An amuse bouche of chilled tomato tea was offered to get the taste buds working and it did just that. The intense flavour of the fresh clean tomato was undeniably a hit with all the guests enjoying afternoon tea by Hudsons at The Grand, York.

The sandwiches were next to arrive, three sandwiches per guest, and it was explained in which order to eat them to give maximum taste on the pallet. Therefore we enjoyed the pickled cucumber first which was light and cleansing, the trout second due to its protein filled goodness, and finally the heavier, stronger flavoured egg mayonnaise. The most unusual of the three was the egg mayonnaise sandwich as this was an exact replica of how Queen Victoria enjoyed her egg mayonnaise sandwiches, with a triple layer of bread; the centre slice was lightly toasted and then placed between two slices of white bread and plenty of egg mayonnaise. If it was good enough for Queen Victoria it was surely good enough for #TeamCoco. All three sandwiches were completely different from any other afternoon tea we had previously experienced.

Then it was onto the homemade scones, both fruit and plain, served with raspberry and strawberry jam and clotted cream, these were exactly as you would expect; warm, fresh, and perfectly baked.

Cakes and sweet treats were next on the menu, and again we were talked through the correct order in which to devour them, starting with the pistachio cake, followed by the banana bread and ending with the choux bun.

Being a fine dining experience these cakes and treats were extremely rich, just enough to cater to any sweet tooth, and the choux bun was delicately sprinkled with gold leaf – for that extra touch of indulgence.

The final part of afternoon tea by Hudsons at The Grand, York was an optional supplementary cheese course. We choose cheese for just one person, as we were quite full from the previous four courses.

A cheese plate with a selection of British cheeses was presented alongside locally produced biscuits, housemade chutney, and fresh grapes. All-in-all it was the perfect ending to a perfect afternoon tea.

Priced at £35 per person, £50 to include Ruinart Champagne (125ml), cheese trolley at a supplement of £10 per person. Served Friday to Sunday from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

The beautiful historic city of York was the destination for a dream #TeamCoco dinner at the contemporary restaurant Arras.

We arrived into a calm oasis at Arras from the busy streets of York. The restaurant is opposite the Foss River and is nestled just inside the famous York City Walls, a great location for both city dwellers and visitors.

The welcome we received was warm and genuine, and we were guided to our table in the corner of the restaurant with a view of an outside small courtyard with plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy the Yorkshire sunshine.

We ordered a local lager, and a fabulous #TeamCoco-style summer cocktail while we perused the menu. After asking for recommendations we opted for the 3-course menu, and no sooner had we ordered than an array of canapés arrived, all beautifully presented – we instantly knew this meal was going to be a good one. The mini baked Camembert with pea-sized cranberry sauce was everything you could possibly want in a canapé.

Looking around at the artwork, we were drawn into the designs by Nicholas Dixon, a Leeds artist who uses vivid colours and biomorphic shapes to produce contemporary and distinctive pieces of art. The white sterile walls became a backdrop for this unique projection of colour and style, which in turn made the restaurant come alive.

Our starters arrived, and the neck of lamb, mint jelly, carrots, broccoli and lamb fat was simply melt-in-the-mouth delectable. The Nicoise style red mullet, octopus, squid ink potatoes, and spiced tomato broth was a colourful work of art, where the red mullet was cooked to perfection and the broth was packed with a divine tomato punch and simple mild spices.

The chef sent each table an amuse-bouche of the day, which was beautifully presented. The centrepiece of the amuse-bouche was a delicately seasoned Jersey Royal smashed potato, surrounded by a beautiful smooth green pea soup, which was gently poured around the potato bringing these sensational flavours together.

Between the amuse-bouche and main course we spoke with one of the owners, Lovaine Humphrey who introduced herself to us and talked us through the restaurant’s background from Australia to York.

The York Arras restaurant is a result of Head Chef Adam Humphrey and his wife Lovaine Humphrey’s hit restaurant Arras in Sydney Australia, which they opened in 2011. After a number of successful years in Australia they decided to move back to the UK, and open Arras in Yorkshire. The York restaurant has been open since 2017 and has a reputation for excellence, which #TeamCoco can wholeheartedly agree with, as the food we experienced was truly outstanding.

This contemporary British modern restaurant had some treats in store for our main courses too. From the wonderful taste sensation that was the hake, cauliflower cheese, roast onion cream and braised oxtail, to the beef sirloin, celeriac and mushroom terrine, bone marrow agnollotti, stem salad and beef tea these dishes were exquisite. The standout flavours came from the roast onion cream, which worked unbelievably well with the delicate hake and the rich braised oxtail, and the celeriac and mushroom terrine, which gave something unique to the beef. The most unusual aspect of the dish was the cup of beef tea, which was served as a separate element, and we felt that this particular dish was perfect without the beef tea.

Desserts involved the magnificent cheese table, which Head Chef Adam Lovaine took time to talk us through, introducing each cheese with its history and a detailed overview of consistency and flavour. The cheeses were served with homemade chutney, homemade fat rascal and homemade Eccles cake, plus plenty of wafer thin breads. We also opted for the ‘Michele Ferrero – An Homage’, which was a hazelnut sable, praline cream and nougatine, with a hazelnut mousse and frangelico sauce. This dessert was extremely rich, yet each element brought the dish together and it culminated in a deep feeling of satisfaction.

After one of the best coffees we have ever tasted, by Square Mile coffee roasters, it was time to head off into the York sunset with a take-home box of beautifully presented Arras petit fours.

If you are visiting York then you must experience the ultra modern Arras restaurant on Peasholme Green with its unique flavours, perfect presentation, and fantastic staff.

The 3-course dinner was priced at £49 per person, with an extra £7 for the cheese plus an extra £7 for the Petit Fours, and drinks were charged on top. All Arras restaurant guests receive complimentary canapés, homemade bread (replenished if required), and an amuse-bouche from the Head Chef Adam Humphrey.

We would like to thank Adam and Lovaine for taking the time to invite #TeamCoco to experience and enjoy their unique restaurant.

If there’s one thing #teamcoco is like, it’s a bottomless brunch. Couple that with free-flowing margaritas and authentic Mexican dishes from one of London’s most lauded Mexican restaurants, and you’re onto an absolute winner in our book. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Santo Remedio, a Mexican joint in Bermondsey who have just launched their bottomless Brunch – never one to turn down a margarita, we sent our girl Beth to check it out…

Bottomless Margaritas

A Mexican Brunch Haven in the Heart of London

Taco-lovers of London, rejoice. Critically acclaimed Mexican spot Santo Remedio, which reopened on Tooley Street to rave reviews have launched its bottomless margarita brunch. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill mid-morning weekend booze up, this is Mexican cuisine with serious foodie credentials, washed down with the punchiest margaritas we’ve had outside of Mexico.

It’s a sunny Sunday morning when we dip into Santo Remedio’s colourful facade. We’re greeted by an airy yet warm space, tropical tones with notes of dark wood, mirrors and vintage prints, and smiling, relaxed staff – all conspiring to create a homey mamá’s kitchen vibe. Still suffering from our half marathon obstacle course the day before, we hope that Santo Remedio – which translates as ‘holy remedy’ is about to cure all that ails us.

Exploring Flavorful Creations at Santo Remedio

We start with great chunky guac and freshly fried chips, followed by a choice of tacos to share. Arguing briefly over the merits of the crispy Flautas with potato and avocado salsa vs. the fiery prawn aguchile rojo with pomegranate, we finally plump for the pork belly with Hertfordshire pork, Chicharron and tomatillo salsa. I may have been bullied into getting these but ended up eating my words. They are a revelation – crispy, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness.

Savouring Mexican Delights

We then each choose our main from the menu, which ranges from Mexican breakfast specialities to more staple options with imaginative twists. I opt for the waitress’ recommendation Huevos Motulenos, tostadas with black beans, fried eggs, salsa roja and cheese – a perfect pairing of sweet and salty with grilled plantains and bacon. My egg-hating other half (catered to well with the brunch menu which also offers non-breakfasty options) goes for the chicken enchilada which he wolfs down without offering me a single bite. Veggies are well catered to too, with dishes like the hibiscus flower enchiladas, which I’m coming back for. We finish with a batch of fresh, fluffy cinnamon churros dipped in dulce de leche, fighting for the last one.

Indulge in London’s Ultimate Mexican Brunch Fiesta at Santo Remedio

After a few more margaritas, we chat with co-owner Natalie, who runs the restaurant with her husband and Chef Patron Edson. Having started with supper clubs before opening their former spot in Shoreditch, their dishes are inspired by Edson’s home Mexico City, as well as the couple’s travels throughout the Yucatan, Baja California and Oaxaca, where Edson worked critically acclaimed Casa Oaxaca, one of Latin America’s 50 Best restaurants. It’s an authenticity that underpins each dish – a taste that transports you to the homes, markets and celebrations of Mexico.

London’s lack of decent Mexican fare might be much bemoaned by its residents, but Santo Remedio is going some way to providing a much-needed cure – and the bottomless margaritas don’t hurt either.

Come every weekend from 11-4 for this Mexican fiesta of unlimited margaritas, bubbles or beer alongside three courses, for just £45. Book online at https://www.santoremedio.co.uk/

We eat and drink out more than ever in spring and summer; it’s a culmination of the warmer weather, the lighter nights, and the need to not be locked up inside an office or behind closed curtains and blinds at home any longer. Whatever your reason for dining and drinking out with friends and family, #TeamCoco are behind you 100%. With this in mind we have compiled a list of nine London hangouts for great grub and brilliant bevvies.

Mother Clucker

As the UK starts to move on from its Prosecco obsession and look for alternative sparkling wines, Cava is being tipped for a comeback by those in the know. To celebrate, Freixenet has partnered with fried chicken connoisseurs Mother Clucker, to combine two of 2019’s hottest foodie trends – alternative sparkling wines and indulgent fried food to create the UK’s first ever Cava-battered chicken.

Cava is well-known in the wine industry for being an excellent pairing alongside savoury food, with fried chicken being Cava’s perfect match2. The notes of Mediterranean fruits in Cordon Negro keep the palate crisp and clean with the acidity in the bubbles delicately slicing through the batter, making the meal feel lighter. Using this as inspiration, Mother Clucker and Freixenet partnered to create Cava-battered chicken. The result has been a crispy Cava-infused batter, which perfectly complements the salty and deep-fried flavour of Mother Clucker’s strips. The result is a delicious upgrade to the traditional beer-battered fish and chips.

The Cava-battered chicken will be available exclusively through Deliveroo Editions: Whitechapel, from the 2nd to the 31st May with a complimentary 20cl bottle of Freixenet Cordon Negro with every purchase, whilst stocks last. In addition, Freixenet Cordon Negro will also be listed in Mother Clucker’s restaurant in Clerkenwell, available to purchase as a combination meal alongside Mother Clucker’s signature strips.

St Luke’s Table

St Luke’s Table, one of Covent Garden’s newest fine-dining destinations, has launched a striking addition to its already popular menu that is entirely plant-based.

In response to both guest requests and a growing awareness about restaurants’ carbon footprint, this plant-powered offering is designed to complement the existing à la carte menu of seasonal dishes. It provides options for vegans, vegetarians and the veg-curious: all those looking to reduce their consumption of animal products, without compromising on taste.

Led by head chef Alessio Piras (Shoreditch House, Cecconi’s, Albert’s and Margot) the menu reflects his Italian roots, whilst showcasing the best of British produce.

Alessio’s fine techniques allow the fresh ingredients to shine; to start try something a little piquant, Spicy Tomato and Pepper Soup, or enjoy the freshest Grilled Asparagus. For the main course the focus is on grounding root vegetables, with vibrantly coloured Beetroot Risotto. Or imagine yourself in sun-kissed Puglia – but without clocking up the air miles – with Linguine Artichokes. Save space for dessert and make the difficult choice between the Pineapple Carpaccio and the luxurious dairy-free Chocolate Mousse.

Although located in LIBRARY, one of central London’s quirkiest members’ clubs, St Luke’s Table is fully open to all who reserve in advance. This allows everyone the opportunity to enjoy an experience that is ordinarily the preserve of members of LIBRARY.

A savvy travel startup is making it possible to enjoy all the glamour of a hotel stay at a fraction of the cost, by letting people book rooms in the world’s top hotels for the day or just a few hours.

We sent #TeamCoco rep Rachel McAlley along to experience a South Yorkshire hotel to find out what the latest trend was really about and whether it was as exciting to check-in to a hotel for the day rather than the night!

Luxury hotel stays are often the preserve of rich travellers with plenty of cash to spare, but DayBreakHotels.co.uk is making it possible for guests of all budgets to kick back and relax in some of the world’s best hotels, whilst avoiding the eye-watering bill.

Users can take advantage of hotel facilities during the day (when most rooms are usually empty) and experience the suite life for up to 75% less than the cost of an overnight booking.

Guests looking for a taste of luxury simply search for their chosen location, choose which facilities they want to add on, such as spa access or a swimming pool, and select a date, before being shown available hotels. These range from popular chains such as Radisson and Hilton, as well as beautiful independents including the 5* Alexander House in West Sussex and The Athenaeum in Mayfair London, plus Scotland’s 4* Nira Caledonian in Edinburgh, and the Midlands 4* Holiday Inn Birmingham North are all booked for DayCation experiences.

Rachel opted to search for a Yorkshire-based hotel, in a rural location (not too far from a city), indoor pool, spa, good food and onsite parking. The 4* Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa was the Yorkshire option on DayBreakHotels and it catered for all her needs.

Check-in took place in the morning, it was as simple and as easy as normal check-in, although it did seem quite strange to be staying in a room for the day rather than overnight.

A ‘Privilege’ room was offered at the Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa, which gave comfy slippers and robe in room along with the luxuries of a Nespresso machine, biccies, and wifi.

Rachel took the opportunity to work from the bedroom desk with free wifi, drink coffee, and enjoy a little daytime TV, all while wearing comfy slippers and eating tasty biscuits. Early afternoon she took to the pool for a short dip, and back to the room to get ready for a late lunch in the hotel lounge and bar, including calamari followed by roast chicken sandwich with avocado mayo and a little cheeky portion of chips on the side.

Post lunch it was time to head back to the hotel room to do a little more laptop work, and get ready for a pamper session in the hotel spa where she had a Kenwood Hall signature back, neck, and shoulder massage with a divine head massage thrown in for good measure.

At 4.30pm it was time to pack-up and check-out of the hotel. This was as easy as checking-in, with no issues whatsoever, it was then time for the room to be remade for the evening guest arrival. All-in-all it was a great experience, one that is surely going to be the biggest craze of the year in the hotel sector.

Whether you want to take advantage of room service, relax by the pool, get pampered at the spa or fine dine in the restaurant, the DayBreakHotels platform will help you find a hotel that suits your needs and budget, making this the ideal daycation/staycation activity to experience with friends or loved ones, or even the perfect excuse to grab some me-time.

As well as the pleasure seekers and staycationers, the platform is also geared-up for the convenience of business travellers needing somewhere to rest and change between meetings or during layovers. Business travellers can book rooms based on their proximity to train stations and airports, as well as rent meeting rooms via the platform.

Co-founder and CEO of DayBreakHotels, Simon Botto, said:

“There are so many beautiful hotels around the world with amazing facilities on offer, but most overnight guests are rarely able to enjoy them properly and many others would love to experience the luxury of a hotel stay, but can’t spare the money or the time. With DayBreakHotels, we’re opening up the possibilities when it comes to hotel stays, making these amazing venues far more accessible.

“We’ve got a gorgeous selection of venues in the UK and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more hotels into our growing network over the coming months, so that Brits can enjoy the luxuries of hotels on their terms.”

The start-up aims to make hotel facilities more accessible for all, whilst helping hotels stay busy during quiet periods. In some cities worldwide, the incursion of Airbnb has resulted in a 1.5% loss in hotel revenue and a 1.3% decrease in hotel nights booked, meaning solutions like these that boost bookings and fill rooms are crucial if the hotel industry is to prosper in the long term.* The incremental revenue earned by selling rooms for day use allows hotels to boost profits by 10-20%.

The platform first launched in Rome in 2014 and is now operating in 15 countries with over 3500 hotels to choose from worldwide.

*Stats taken from a study into the effect of Airbnb on the accommodation market, as quoted on Forbes.com.

We would like to thank DayBreakHotels and Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa for organising TeamCoco’s first ever DayCay experience.

I have an admission to make, I love this time of year, spring has well and truly sprung and the blossoms are in full bloom. From the incredible display of colours in the parks to the unexpected delight of wandering into a side road to be greeted by rows of pink and white beautiful petals cascading down from blossom laden branches, London has never looked more beautiful.

These incredible signs of spring are of course not limited to the UK but seen all over the world, most famously in Japan where Sakura or cherry blossoms are celebrated with abandon. From Sakura festivals (Hanami) in the street to every type of blossom flavoured items from pastries to tea, Sakura fever takes over. The blossoms are symbolic of fleeting beauty as they only bloom for such a limited time, this acknowledgement that nothing lasts forever has been celebrated for thousands of years and London is now also in the grip of Sakura fever. So if you are a cherry blossom lover, give these limited edition events a try this spring.

Chotto Matte, Soho

Already well known for its delicious light Nikkei cuisine boasting a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavours, Chotto Matte is effortlessly cool and has upped its game this cherry blossom season with an incredible floral menu. Blossom brunching has never been easier with Ebi Blossom Tempura, Hiroshima Spring Maki and even Raindrop Jelly complete with edible flowers and Cherry Ripple Ice Cream. Available from 31st March 2019 – www.chotto-matte.com

Have you ever visited the beautiful island of Nusa Penida? If not, then it really should be one to add to the must-visit list. This wonderful part of the world is located about 45 minutes from Bali by speedboat and is home to breath-taking viewpoints, stunning beaches and interesting rock formations. It also hosts a belter of a sunset too and for witnessing that, we can’t recommend Amok Sunset bar enough.

Amok Sunset bar is the best place to watch the sunset in Nusa Penida and is located on the west side of the island near the famous tourist hotspots, Crystal Beach and Angel’s Billabong. We totally recommend you start your day early and tick off the nearby Instagrammable spots before retiring to Amok Sunset Bar for a midday swim and a tasty munch. Hanging around for their happy hour is a must, as between 5pm – 6pm it’s buy one get one free on cocktails. It’s the perfect moment, sipping on delicious cocktails and enjoying the mega sunset views unfolding out in front of you!

Its beautiful decor is an equisite mix of the traditional ‘bale bale’ roofs and modern bamboo architecture making the look and feel of the main bar and restaurant quite spectacular. They also have 3 private bamboo nests where you can climb high and watch the sunset in peace – a special occasion type experience for sure! There is a minimum spend on those but the maximum is for 4 people which makes it easy to share the cost.

Also, it’s worth noting that the road down to Amok Sunset Bar is a touch on the ricketty side. The island’s roads need a lot of attention but just go slow and steady over those potholes and it you’ll be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking views (and cocktails) ever.

There really nothing better than a sunset bar that comes equipped with a swimming pool, insane views, delicious cocktails and a mouthwatering menu. And to be honest, here at HOC, that’s our favourite way to spend a spend any day!

#CocoEats – Imagine escaping to a beautiful island steeped in sunshine surrounded by lapping water where you can embrace the local history, drink the local gin and eat the most delicious food? Where could you be… The Caribbean, The Balearics or even the Mediterranean? How about the Isle of Wight?

Nestling just a few miles from the mainland, England’s largest island is truly a jewel in her crown and there are certainly Royal connections. The island was a second home to Queen Victoria and family who was so taken by the beauty of the Isle of Wight that they built an opulent summer home there – Osborne House. Filled with lavish artefacts, paintings and grandeur, this palatial palace is open to the public who want a glimpse of Royal life in the Victorian era.

The Isle of Wight is a plethora of restaurants, cafes and bars and is frankly a foodies dream! One of the must-visit places on the island to eat at is The Coast Bar in Cowes where they serve locally sourced, seasonal food in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Guests can opt from a wide range of dishes such as local crab bruschetta, sea bass fillet and moules frites. They also have an impressive drinks list which includes cocktails like raspberry blini, elderflower gin fix and their very own Bloody Mary!

Situated in Ventnor, the histroic Royal Hotel is a great place to enjoy fine dining by the sea, it has the most commanding views over the bay and one of the grandest dining rooms that you could eat in.

Their Table d’hôte menu contains treats such as a Carpaccio of Isle of Wight Beef, quail egg and shallot jam and smoked feta, South Coast crab, avocado mousse, pan-fried sea bream and pork belly. Like with most restaurants on the island, the majority of their produce is locally sourced.

The Little Gloster is a delightful restaurant in Gurnard – just five minutes away from the town of Cowes. Featured in the Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide 2018, It has the most wonderful panoramic sea views of the Solent and you can’t beat sitting down with a crisp glass of white or one of their cocktails gazing into the sea. With dishes such as their Rainbow Chard vegetable rolls, Isle of Wight crab rarebit and that English classic – Fish and Chips, you will be surely spoilt for choice.

With restaurants like The Little Gloster, the Isle of Wight has seen a rise in gastronomy over recent years and probably the best example of this has to be the incredible Thompson’s in Newport which serves contemporary British cuisine in an open kitchen concept. Chef Robert Thompson was the youngest British chef to be awarded a Michelin star. The talented chef takes British classics and gives them a modern makeover with his fabulous tasting menu which includes dishes like ballotine of rabbit and native lobster, pan-fried fillet of john dory, Cornish cuttlefish with local (Arreton Valley) asparagus and barbecued rump of lamb. Each of the dishes in eight-course tasting menu comes with a matching wine flight which includes the likes of Muscadet, Chablis and a rather cheeky Pinot Noir.

As well as its amazing restaurants, the island has garnered a strong reputation for cultivating some incredible local produce such as tomatoes, watercrsss and of course, the food item synonymous with the island – garlic!

The Garlic Farm is certainly worth a visit for either lunch or a light snack. Run by the very inspirational Colin and his family, guests can enjoy a tractor-trailer ride around the farm that is surrounded by the lush fields of the Arreton Valley. Enjoy tasty snacks such as black-garlic ice cream, garlic ale and garlic-vodka (you have to say that you have tried it!). You can even take-home little pots of truffle and garlic oil, garlic mayonnaise and even garlic-infused fudge.

A visit to the island should not be complete without a cheeky drink of Mermaid Gin and why not go one step further and visit their gin distillery? The first of its kind on the island. Utilising ten botanicals such as elderflower, Sicilian lemon and even locally-grown botanicals such as Boadicea hops from the Botanical Gardens in Ventnor and Rock Samphire from the island’s clifftops) the Mermaid Gin along with the slightly potent (but still delicious) Victory HMS gin certainly ticks all the right boxes to a gin aficionado like me.

If you are looking for a relaxing yet luxurious break with some incredible food, why not take a Red Funnel ferry over to the Isle of Wight?

Red Funnel operates regular crossings from Southampton to Cowes. Fares start from £46 for a day return on the vehicle ferry and £10 day return on the hi-speed passenger ferry.

There is much food news to share from restaurant openings and bakeries winning awards, to inventive ice cream launches, tasty biscuits, tequila cocktails, Star Wars gin, and even a Great British Bakeoff contestant joining forces with a famous rice brand in the name of Charity!

#TeamCoco love the forthcoming season as it’s filled with brighter days, longer nights, and looking at this mini food & drink round-up there’s so much to enjoy food and drink-wise around the UK.

Biscuits and Prosecco

Recent studies by world-renowned biscuit brand Elizabeth Shaw have found that Brits would prefer a glass of Prosecco, over tea with their biccies.

There seems to be nothing Brits love more than dunking biccies in a brew. While it comes as no surprise, tea and coffee reign supreme as the nation’s favourite drink for dunking, new research reveals we prefer to pair our favourite tipple with our biscuits. In fact, 1 in 20 women say the perfect combination is a glass of prosecco and a biscuit, while men, increasingly, like to pair their biccie with a beer.

Londoners have crowned themselves as the UK’s biscuit connoisseurs, followed by those who live in York and Leeds. 68% of London’s biscuit lovers believe they can identify every distinct taste and texture combination.

Elizabeth Shaw have over 130 years’ experience transforming the perfect taste and texture combinations into luxuriously tempting confectionery. To celebrate being the UK’s taste and textures combinations experts, they’re launching their very first experiential sampling tour – The Elizabeth Shaw Combinations Tour. The tour is travelling across the UK, inviting the public to sample some of their favourite products, showcasing how Elizabeth Shaw expertly bring together the perfect taste and texture combinations.

You can keep up to date with the tour via Elizabeth Shaw social media channels on Insta, FB and Twitter. To find out more about Elizabeth Shaw visit ElizabethShaw.co.uk

ERST Restaurant, Manchester

The team behind Manchester’s Trove are pleased to announce the launch of Erst wine bar and restaurant. The restaurant will serve simple, delicious food from the grill and will boast one of Manchester’s most inspired selections of craft beers and natural wines.

The newest addition to the thriving Ancoats area of Manchester, Co-owners Will Sutton, Patrick Withington, Katy Saide and Marcus Saide chose the name ‘Erst’ as reference to time “formerly” or “long ago” leading into the choices of wine, beer and use of fire for cooking.
The wine list showcases vintages selected from small producers from around the world, who care for the fruit and the land it’s grown on, using organic and often biodynamic practices. From the grill comes naturally leavened flatbreads made in house served with whipped lardo, grilled whole mackerel, monk’s beard and wild garlic aioli. The Bar menu includes smoked almonds, wild fennel saucisson, along with anchovy za’atar and Bergamot – perfect with a glass of crisp Augustiner lager.

Bakeoff star Ruby Bhogal

Bake Off star Ruby Bhogal has created a very special recipe working with the United Nation’s World Food Programme and Tilda to ‘Help Mums Together’.

Ruby’s ‘Mama B’s Chicken Biryani’ is inspired by her own mother, her cooking inspiration and the person she thanks for igniting her desire to cook from a young age. The recipe uses limited-edition packs of Tilda Pure Basmati rice – of which every pack sold here in the UK will donate a nutrition-boosting meal to expectant mothers in Bangladesh to help fight malnutrition.

Are you looking to do a whistle stop tour of New York City but have allocated the majority of your budget to be spent on Fifth Avenue or Madison? We got you. Check out insider tips to experience the gems of the city, off the tourist trail without breaking the bank.

ROCKEFELLER CENTER:

Rather than paying and queuing for an expensive and touristy observation deck, book a table at the divine Bar SixtyFive at the Rainbow Room. Bar SixtyFive is New York’s highest terrace bar and is the perfect spot to take in breathtaking views of the city during sunset on the 65th floor of the Rockefeller. The cocktails are pricey but enjoying the city views amongst actual New Yorkers is something money can’t buy – just remember to book a window table! Try the classic Manhattan (naturally), sample the Rosé Royale or the Champagne Cocktail fit with vintage Tattinger, sit back and watch the sun go down on the city that never sleeps. If you do find that you want to spend a little more, the observation deck is a part of the attractions listed on the New York pass, along with many others.

MUSEUMS:

Channel your inner Blair Waldorf or Serena van der Woodsen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and get that snap on the steps. Head to the American Museum of Natural History directly opposite through Central Park, stopping off at Shakespeare Garden and Turtle Pond en route. You can get into the museum for free in the last hour everyday (normally a $25 suggested donation) and so it is the perfect thrifty option to get the ‘must do’ museums done.

SIGHTS:

St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan is free to get into and is completely spectacular with tall spires, choral music and thousands of candles that are constantly flickering. St. Patrick’s was built and paid for by thousands of immigrants who fled religious persecution and started a new life in the city. The feeling of perseverance and grit is emphasised when you turn off Fifth Avenue and see the neo-gothic style Cathedral stand in stark contrast to the epic sky scrapers that surround it.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE:

The subway is a great way to get around in the city. Hop on from Manhattan to Clark Street in edgy Brooklyn and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge back to the island, taking in the city in all its glory. Make sure you look left for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

WHERE TO EAT:

The Red Flame Diner in midtown (right by some amazing street art) doesn’t look like much from the outside but if you want unbelievable American fare, think fluffy pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, French Toast and Belgian Waffles, this is the place for you. Even better – the coffee is never ending. Perfect for when you are trying to sightsee, and shop, till you drop.
