Giuseppe Pastore is an Italian artist whose journey into the world of painting began unexpectedly, unfolding into a profound exploration of color, movement, and self-expression. From his initial encounter with a blank canvas to his evolution as a self-taught painter, Giuseppe’s artistic trajectory is marked by spontaneity, experimentation, and a deep-rooted passion for creation.

Inspired by the interplay between chaos and order, his vibrant compositions invite viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and interpretation. Through his distinctive style and unwavering dedication to his craft, Giuseppe continues to push the boundaries of his creativity, forging a unique artistic identity that resonates with audiences worldwide…

Can you tell us about the moment when you discovered your passion for painting and how it transformed from a chance encounter into a central part of your life?

It was an afternoon in 2010 when I found myself torn between going for a run or trying my hand at painting. Despite never having painted before, I had been intrigued by the idea of buying a canvas in the preceding days, yet hadn’t made the purchase. As I hesitated, my mother unearthed an old blank canvas, once belonging to my sister from her art school days. That day, I decided to paint, using the aged colors also belonging to my sister, now hardened and in need of thinning. Since then, driven by a compelling impulse, the need to paint has become a constant in my life. I’ve created over 250 paintings since that moment.

Your journey from studying Physics to becoming a self-taught painter is quite remarkable. How do you feel your scientific background influences your artistic process, if at all?

According to Leonardo da Vinci, “Art is science; it cannot be improvised and is not satisfied with indifferent and superficial approximations; on the contrary, it requires hard and systematic work.” I believe the scientific method has significantly influenced my approach to painting, particularly in the experimental phase of my early work. Subsequently, I’ve integrated acquired painting methodologies and techniques based on experiential learning. Just as in science, having a method has been fundamental to my artistic process, often involving unconventional tools such as DIY implements.

Your early works seem to explore themes of the infinite and depth. Could you delve into how these concepts emerged in your art and how they’ve evolved over time?

Themes of infinity and depth emerged spontaneously in my early works, such as “Opening” from 2012, where the concept of infinity is associated with depth. In other pieces like “T1” or “Lux Libera Nos,” infinity is depicted through repeated similar signs within the composition. Initially unplanned, the theme of infinity has evolved over time, transitioning into themes of movement in my recent oil paintings, characterized by geometrically unbounded motions as seen in “Tumulto.”

What role does spontaneity play in your creative process, particularly in your approach to action painting?

Identifying as an Action Painter, spontaneity is pivotal in my creative process. Almost all my paintings are gestural and spontaneous, often driven by the composition itself. This is particularly evident in my oil paintings, where canvases are laid horizontally and worked on from various angles. The application of color, often done with unconventional tools like spatulas, emphasizes movement and gesture. In this regard, my practice of traditional martial arts has also played a significant role.

The quote you’ve chosen from Khalil Gibran speaks to humility and the acceptance of ignorance. How does this philosophy resonate with you as an artist?

“I am ignorant of absolute truth. But I am humble before my ignorance and there lies my honor and my reward.” This quote resonates deeply with me as it underscores the humility required in both artistic and scientific pursuits. It acknowledges the relative nature of talent and the importance of continuous learning and growth. Embracing this philosophy allows artists to remain open to new possibilities and perpetually strive for improvement.

How do you balance instinct and deliberation in your artistic decisions, especially considering your transition from acrylics to mainly using oil paints?

Oil paints afford greater flexibility in reflection and adjustment compared to acrylics, which dry faster. Consequently, acrylic painting demands a more instinctive and swift approach, while oil painting allows for a more deliberate and thoughtful process. My transition from acrylics to oils has thus led to a shift towards more considered compositions, reflecting a balance between instinctive gestures and intentional decision-making.

As a self-taught artist, what challenges have you faced along your journey, and how have they shaped your artistic practice?

Being self-taught has allowed me to cultivate a unique perspective, less constrained by conventional artistic norms. However, it initially posed challenges in establishing authority within the art community and gaining recognition from traditional galleries. Instead, I’ve leveraged online platforms like Artfinder and Singulart to showcase my work. This journey has taught me to value originality and embrace diverse influences, shaping my practice into one that prioritizes personal expression over adherence to artistic conventions.

Your work seems to bridge the gap between chaos and order, with gestural movements meeting geometric themes. Can you discuss how you find harmony within this duality?

Chaos, often central to my paintings, should not be perceived negatively but rather as a dynamic force guided by underlying principles. While my compositions may appear chaotic, they are governed by intentional rules and harmonies developed over time. My expertise in color application allows me to create compositions that balance spontaneity with structure, evolving from geometrically precise forms to more fluid and dynamic arrangements.

Your art reflects a deep introspection and exploration of the self. What insights or revelations have you gained about yourself through your artistic endeavors?

Discovering my passion for painting later in life has been a revelation in itself, highlighting the unpredictability of personal discovery. Painting has provided me with a profound sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, offering a parallel avenue for creative expression alongside my scientific pursuits. Through this journey, I’ve come to appreciate the joy of creation and the inherent beauty of the artistic process.

How do you approach the concept of perfection in your art, especially considering the spontaneous nature of action painting?

Perfection, for me, is reached when I find myself satisfied with a painting, recognizing its inherent value and resonance. It’s not about achieving flawless execution but rather capturing a moment of creative fulfillment and resonance. Embracing the spontaneous nature of action painting allows me to appreciate imperfections as integral components of the artistic journey, each contributing to the unique character of the final piece.

Your paintings often seem to invite viewers to interpret and explore their own meanings. What do you hope audiences take away from experiencing your work?

I aim to provide viewers with a means of escape and introspection through my paintings, inviting them to immerse themselves in a world of color and movement. By offering space for personal interpretation, I hope to evoke emotions and spark contemplation, enabling viewers to find resonance and meaning within their own experiences.

How do you stay inspired and motivated, especially during periods of artistic block or self-doubt?

Fortunately, I haven’t experienced significant periods of artistic block or doubt. However, I find inspiration in classical music, particularly piano compositions by artists like Philip Glass, whose work resonates deeply with me. Additionally, immersing myself in nature and continuing my practice of traditional Japanese martial arts provides avenues for rejuvenation and creative inspiration.

Your use of colour is both vibrant and nuanced. Could you share your thoughts on colour theory and its role in your compositions?

While I may not adhere to traditional color theory principles, I gravitate towards overlapping and blending colors in my oil paintings. Although my approach to color may be intuitive, there is a discernible method underlying my compositions, guided by years of experimentation and refinement. While I may not consciously adhere to established color theories, my compositions are nonetheless characterized by vibrant palettes and nuanced interplays of color and light.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are also embarking on a journey of self-discovery through their craft?

I would encourage aspiring artists to paint prolifically, embracing the journey of self-discovery and creative exploration. It’s essential not to be deterred by criticism but instead to view it as an opportunity for growth and refinement. Ultimately, the goal should be to derive joy and fulfilment from the act of painting itself, allowing passion and curiosity to guide the artistic journey.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals as an artist, and how do you see your work evolving in the future?

As an artist, my primary aspiration is to continue creating from a place of internal necessity, unconstrained by external expectations or ambitions for fame or success. While I hope to share my art with a broader audience, my focus remains on the intrinsic value of the creative process itself. Moving forward, I anticipate further exploration and evolution in my work, driven by an ongoing commitment to experimentation and personal growth.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Japan holds a special allure for me, given my passion for traditional Japanese martial arts and fascination with Eastern culture. While I may not travel extensively myself, preferring to let my paintings journey to new homes around the world, Japan remains a destination I hope to explore someday.

With a keen eye for blending the rich heritage of Italian craftsmanship with the timeless elegance of British design, Paolo shares the remarkable journey that led to the establishment of his esteemed brand.

From his childhood spent amidst the artisan workshops of Piedmont, Italy, to the bustling streets of London, where he honed his appreciation for traditional British style, Paolo’s narrative is one of passion, determination, and unwavering commitment to quality. Through captivating anecdotes and insightful reflections, readers are transported into the heart of Francone Bespoke Taps, where each piece is meticulously crafted to embody the perfect fusion of heritage and modernity.

Join House of Coco as they sit down with Paolo Francone to explore the inspirations, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped his entrepreneurial journey, offering readers a glimpse into the world of luxury brassware redefined…

Can you share a pivotal moment in your life that led you to establish Francone Bespoke Taps, merging Italian craftsmanship with British design?

After several years of working in marketing and sales in the UK, including for some of the best large corporates, I wasn’t completely satisfied with my role. As a self-disciplined person, I felt a persistent desire to build my own business. I wanted to combine everything I had learned in the UK with what my native area of Piedmont, Italy, could offer. It’s an area dominated by two industries – fabrics, with brands such as Zegna and Loro Piana, and brassware – particularly bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

I aimed to develop an online business and initially thought it would be challenging to convey the quality of fabrics and the tactile experience of materials online. However, with brassware fixtures, I immediately saw an opportunity to blend the style of UK designs with the skill and beauty of Italian craftsmanship into an online brand.

Growing up in Piedmont, Italy, you were surrounded by artisan workshops. How did this childhood exposure influence your passion for craftsmanship and bespoke design?

Coming from a small town in this region greatly influenced me. My father was a building constructor, and from time to time, I would accompany him on visits to local artisans to have things made. It could be anything from gates to wooden doors, windows, and more. I found the world of workshops and craftsmanship fascinating from the very beginning. I appreciated the relationships built with all the various artisans and admired and respected their skills and approach.

Moving from Italy to London seems like a significant transition. How did your appreciation for traditional British style evolve during this time, and how does it manifest in Francone Bespoke Taps?

I love the simple elegance of British design. The focus on details and timeless style in British interiors aligns with my preference for a sophisticated yet subtle atmosphere.

Moving from Italy to London brought about a profound shift in my appreciation for traditional British style. This transition influenced our brand of brassware fixtures, emphasizing timeless elegance and a commitment to craftsmanship.

At Francone Bespoke Taps, we embrace solid brass in crafting our products. The finishes, ranging from polished nickel to bronze and different variations of brass, are all living finishes that age beautifully over time, reminiscent of returning to traditions.

Francone Bespoke Taps is a blend of Italian heritage and British design. How do you balance these two influences in your products, and what challenges or rewards does it bring?

By blending Italian craftsmanship with British aesthetics, we create fixtures that balance heritage and design. We meticulously integrate the internal parts with mechanisms made in Italy with high-quality materials and draw inspiration from traditional British design. The challenge lies in harmonizing these diverse styles to create cohesive and unique products.

In your journey, working closely with craftsmen and using traditional methods has been a priority. Can you share a memorable experience where this approach resulted in something truly exceptional?

Our approach involves customizing designs based on customers’ preferences and design needs, then collaborating with artisans to turn them into unique products. This approach was evident in the first of many projects we completed with the high-end gym group, Barry’s UK. We were asked for a very specific finish, which we tailored for them after sharing a few samples. It was akin to creating a culinary dish that required a combination of specific ingredients to produce a unique and memorable taste! The finish comprised a brass material base, a nickel layer, some copper, and a slightly brushed dark bronze. The result was an exceptional tone of finish that delighted the client.

Your commitment to superior quality is evident. If you could go back and do one thing differently in establishing Francone Bespoke Taps, what would it be, and why?

From day one, each step has been carefully considered and thoughtfully executed. I started off with a budget of zero, so initially, it was challenging. But at the same time, the constraints added more significance to each decision I made – from product development to branding. Handling customer support, overseeing branding, product development, and managing the website independently allowed me to gain insights into various aspects that could be improved and identify opportunities. Managing everything by myself served as a valuable starting point, providing insights into areas for development and uncovering potential opportunities.

Is there a specific quote or mantra that inspires you personally and guides the ethos of Francone Bespoke Taps?

The first artisan I started to work with used to say, “Everything can be done.” This is our guiding principle, and we always explore all avenues when faced with special requests. We avoid saying, “We can’t do it.”

As the driving force behind design innovation, how do you ensure that each piece honours its heritage while remaining true to contemporary design methods and ingenuity?

Essentially, we keep the design traditional while incorporating innovation and modern technologies, particularly in terms of mechanisms and materials. However, for some aspects, the old ways are still the best.

Francone Bespoke Taps serves a diverse range of clients. Can you share a project or collaboration that was particularly challenging but immensely rewarding?

Francone Bespoke Taps recently embarked on an exciting custom project for a client in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The client sought a unique indoor vanity area along with three outdoor stone sinks. With a reputation for fully customizable solutions, Francone Bespoke Taps was prepared to bring the client’s vision to reality. Designing touch control taps, huge custom mirror frames, and outdoor taps for the large stone sinks posed unprecedented challenges. Yet, through meticulous planning, precise measurements, and innovative problem-solving, the team successfully delivered. The project was shortlisted for the Society of British Interior Design Awards for its seamless blend of modern technology and timeless design to bring the client’s vision to life.

Paolo, you offer a wide range of materials, finishes, and styles. What advice would you offer someone looking to create a truly unique and personalized bathroom fixture?

In terms of finishes, I am a big fan of unlacquered brass. Whether polished, satin, or tumbled, the effect is outstanding from day one until the patina develops, if desired. When it comes to designs, I would likely choose the Art Deco style. It’s increasingly appreciated, and I believe incorporating some brass Art Deco elements can make a bathroom truly unique. At Francone Bespoke Taps, we are currently working on creating a new collection incorporating the Art Deco style.

Can you share a memorable client story where Francone Bespoke Taps played a significant role in enhancing the aesthetic of a space?

Francone Bespoke Taps is fortunate to have clients who choose our products for their beautiful properties, one of which is Tythe, a unique wedding venue nestled in the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside. Tythe is popular with couples seeking a perfect blend of rustic charm and timeless elegance for their special day. When renovating the property, the owner was very clear about the look she wanted and did extensive research – both online and offline.

She desired a gorgeous brass tap that would age beautifully and endure the test of time as well as repeated use from guests. She came across an image of a brass shower head by Francone Bespoke Taps online and knew almost immediately that she had found her supplier. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, she knew our products would age gracefully and fit perfectly with her vision for the 17th Century house.

Designing made-to-order products involves a collaborative process. How do you and your team ensure that clients’ unique visions are realized while maintaining the integrity of the brand?

The journey begins on our website, where clients can browse existing designs or create their own. We offer bespoke, completely customized, beautifully finished products – clients simply convey their desires, and we handle the rest.

While keeping our core product elements, we can adjust size, finish, and design to meet specific requirements while maintaining our style, materials, and brand.

If you had to describe the essence of Francone Bespoke Taps in three words, what would they be, and why?

Probably our slogan “Traditional fixtures, elevated.” This truly encapsulates our ethos. With tradition in mind, we elevate with modern technologies and features, not only in terms of products but also in customer experience. This extends from our website to social media and customer service, ensuring clients thoroughly enjoy their interactions with us.

As a leader, how do you foster creativity and innovation within your team to keep pushing the boundaries of design?

I promote creativity by encouraging open communication, valuing diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture of experimentation. This applies not only to new products requested by clients but also to other aspects of our operations, such as customer support or packaging details. I encourage team members to propose new ideas.

You’ve mentioned the importance of Francone Bespoke Taps serving generations to come. How do you envision the legacy of your brand in the long term?

I envision Francone Bespoke Taps as a timeless brand known for exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and quality. I aspire for it to become synonymous with heritage, sophistication, and reliability, leaving a lasting imprint in luxury brassware.

Your dream destination to travel to is often a source of inspiration. Where is that destination, and how does it influence your creative process?

In general, exploring cities, especially capitals, can be a rich source of inspiration. However, when selecting a dream destination, I find Rome particularly captivating due to its unparalleled richness in history.

Balancing heritage and modernity is an art. Are there specific design principles or philosophies that you adhere to in achieving this delicate balance?

I admire designs that respect traditions, use innovative quality, prioritize simplicity for practicality, have timeless appeal, and follow a sustainable approach. My goal is to create products that meet users’ immediate needs and contribute positively to culture and the environment.

In the process of creating bespoke designs, what role does the client play, and how do you ensure their vision is translated into the final product?

In the realm of bespoke designs, some products are born out of specific requests from clients. Balancing design aesthetics with practicality becomes crucial, and simplicity often emerges as the optimal solution that satisfies both aspects. It’s important to note that in the design process, compromises are not only made with manufacturing considerations but also with the goal of ensuring the easiest installation possible.

As someone deeply involved in the creative process, what advice would you offer to aspiring designers looking to make their mark in the industry?

Simplicity and being observant are key. Embrace the power of simplicity in your designs. Strive for clarity, functionality, and elegance, as simplicity often leads to timeless and impactful creations. Also, inspiration is all around us. Stay observant in your daily life, paying attention to details, patterns, and interactions. You never know where the next great idea might come from.

Lastly, how can people stay connected with you and follow the journey of Francone Bespoke Taps? Where can they find more information about your designs and the brand?

We are very active on most social media channels and have numerous guides and inspirations on our website, along with our full range of products. Welcome to a world where design transcends mere functionality and becomes a testament to the power of conscious creativity…

Can you share the moment or experience from your childhood on the island of Jersey that ignited your passion for sustainable design and influenced your brand’s philosophy?

Growing up on a small island cultivated my love for the outdoors and sports. The island’s natural beauty inspired me to appreciate the environment, and this connection to nature fuelled my passion for sustainable design. Witnessing the delicate ecosystem of Jersey instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to protect it.

How has your background in Furniture and Product design at Bath Spa University shaped your approach to creating pieces that blend function, style, and sustainability?

Bath Spa University provided a platform for me to explore my design approach. Being hands-on with materials and constantly experimenting in the workshop shaped my commitment to blending function, style, and sustainability. The university’s emphasis on personal exploration also allowed me to develop a unique perspective that reflects in my creations.

Being shortlisted for Young Furniture Designer of the Year is a remarkable achievement. How did that recognition impact your journey as a designer and entrepreneur?

Being shortlisted boosted my confidence in both my design skills and knowledge of furniture making. It was a pivotal moment that validated my dedication to the craft. The recognition opened doors, providing opportunities to showcase my work and connect with different people within the design industry.

Can you delve into the philosophy that guides your design process and how it aims to elevate human interaction through sensitive design?

The philosophy guiding my design process revolves around the notion that every product in the world undergoes a design process and is worth exploring from both an aesthetic and practical perspective. I also approach design with sensitivity toward natural materials and the surrounding environment, aiming to create designs that are functional and contribute to elevating human interactions.

By being attuned to the innate qualities of natural materials, my designs seek to enhance the human experience. I aim to craft spaces that foster meaningful gatherings and conversations or provide environments for relaxation and comfort. Whether it’s a piece of furniture that invites people to connect or a space that encourages moments of tranquility, the overarching philosophy is to enrich lives through thoughtful and sensitive design.

In exploring materiality and processes, how do you ensure that your creations not only meet functional and stylish criteria but also adhere to sustainable principles?

My design process starts with using different processes to manipulate the materials and play with form. This initial exploration serves as the foundation and inspiration for my sketching stages and final design. Throughout, simplicity is a guiding principle for me that ensures my designs stand out while maintaining functionality.

Also central to my sustainable design principles is the conscientious use of local resources to minimise the carbon footprint. I prioritise the utilization of natural materials like local timber, emphasizing responsible practices to minimize waste. This approach aligns with my commitment to creating environmentally conscious designs that are both functional and sustainable.

What challenges have you faced in incorporating sustainable credentials into your designs, and how have you overcome them?

Incorporating sustainable credentials as a new business has been challenging due to the inherent costs and time associated with adopting sustainable practices. However, despite these challenges, I have taken a proactive step by using Grown in Britain Certified materials. This certification not only aligns with my commitment to sustainability but also facilitates the traceability of materials used in creating my furniture, notably in the case of the Archie design.

Your brand focuses on limiting the impact on the planet. Could you share some specific practices or initiatives within your business that reflect this commitment to sustainability?

My brand, Gigi Cooke, is dedicated to the design and production of long-lasting furniture with a commitment to sustainability, addressing environmental, social, and economic aspects. Being from Jersey, I wanted to use local craftsmen for manufacturing, and while I cannot source materials on the Island, I am using sustainably certified British timber imported from the south of England.

In addition, with Archie, my latest design, 5% of the proceeds will be donated to Jersey Trees for Life, an amazing charity whose mission is to inspire, facilitate, and promote the planting, conservation, and protection of trees and hedgerows while educating our community about their environmental, ecological, and social importance.

Beyond the design realm, what other aspects of your life contribute to your creative process and inspire your work?

Nature and the outdoors play a pivotal role in inspiring my creative process. Witnessing the beauty of trees in their natural environment and observing the harmony of our surroundings, coupled with the ever-evolving aspects of nature, heavily influence my work. The organic forms, textures, and material uses found in nature serve as a constant inspiration, shaping the aesthetics and sustainability focus in my designs.

As the founder of your brand, what moments or achievements are you most proud of in your journey so far?

As the driving force behind my brand, Gigi Cooke, I take immense pride in the pivotal moments and achievements throughout my journey. The initial establishment of my business stands out as a significant milestone, realizing a dream of being in control of my own future as a designer and founder.

A particularly “pinch me” moment occurred when my first piece of furniture, Archie, was launched and featured in British Vogue from January to March of this year. Another noteworthy achievement is this spring; my design, Archie, will be stocked in Holloway of Ludlow in Bath. The prospect of seeing Archie in-store for purchase in the upcoming spring marks a notable milestone in expanding the presence of my creations.

How do you balance the need for commercial success with your commitment to sustainable and sensitive design?

Balancing commercial success with sustainability involves making informed choices in material sourcing, manufacturing processes, and marketing strategies. Being transparent about my sustainable practices creates a connection with consumers, fostering trust and loyalty.

Travel often serves as a wellspring of inspiration. What destinations have had a profound impact on your creative vision, and how do those influences manifest in your designs?

London, with its abundance of creativity, has been a constant source of inspiration for me. The city’s diverse architecture and the convergence of different cultures have significantly shaped my creative vision. When I return from London, I’m always infused with a renewed drive to create and make.

The city’s dynamic business landscape inspires me to broaden my design horizons by visiting showrooms, boutiques, and various studios that span different mediums. The experiences and influences gathered from London resonate in my designs, reflecting a fusion of architectural elements and multicultural nuances.

If you could collaborate with any other designer or artist, living or deceased, who would it be, and why?

If I could collaborate with any other creative, it would be Maarten Baas – his experimental and playful designs push process to create striking pieces of art and furniture.

Looking back at your career, is there anything you would do differently, and what valuable lessons have you learned along the way?

Reflecting on my career, I currently wouldn’t change anything. However, a crucial lesson I’ve learned is the importance of proactively putting myself out there. Researching companies, individuals, or anyone who inspires or can offer guidance has been instrumental. I’ve found that reaching out to lots of people and making connections is invaluable. This approach has opened doors, created opportunities, and fostered meaningful connections throughout my journey.

Can you share a particularly challenging project you undertook and how it stretched your creative boundaries?

One of my most challenging projects was Archie, my most recent venture and also my first launched project. The difficulty arose during the decision-making phase, where I had to select the final design to progress with. This pivotal choice not only marked the initiation of Archie but also demanded a comprehensive evaluation of creative potential, functionality, and alignment with my brand’s vision.

The challenge of making this crucial decision ultimately pushed the boundaries of my creativity, requiring a thoughtful and strategic approach to ensure the success of Archie as both a design and a product.

In a rapidly changing industry, how do you stay ahead of trends while maintaining the uniqueness and authenticity of your brand?

I believe authenticity is key to staying relevant. By designing pieces that resonate with my personal interests and values, I naturally stay true to my brand. While staying informed about industry trends, I nevertheless prioritize creating timeless pieces that reflect my unique perspective.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers who are passionate about incorporating sustainability into their work?

Design is fun and requires a lot of time, so you definitely need to be passionate and use your interests to influence your design and processes. Regarding sustainability, given the ever-expanding innovation in sustainability, it’s essential to stay well-informed and educated. The field is dynamic, and staying ahead of the curve ensures that your designs stay relevant. Embrace the continuous learning process and let your commitment to sustainability drive both your creativity and your responsibility as a designer.

Do you have a favorite piece or collection that holds special significance to you personally, and what is the story behind it?

My first piece of furniture, Archie, has a special place in my heart. The product encompasses all my beliefs and vision for what my brand stands for. Archie highlights the beauty of the timber the UK has to offer by showcasing the materiality of English oak and ash. Archie is a playful approach to versatile, contemporary furniture, mirroring its unique and arching silhouette, from which it draws its name. In addition, Archie seamlessly transforms from a stylish stool, ideal for providing extra seating, into a functional coffee table that enhances the coziness of gatherings. It also effortlessly transitions into a chic side table, perfect for holding your favorite reads. This multifunctional design not only reflects my commitment to aesthetics and versatility but also represents the essence of my brand’s philosophy – combining form, functionality, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of sustainable materials.

How do you see the role of British design evolving, especially in the context of sustainability, in the coming years?

I envision British design evolving towards a more localized and sustainable approach. Consumers want to learn about what they are buying and reflect their own personal style and ethics. People want to understand the story behind what they are purchasing, and British designers will likely focus on authenticity, craftsmanship, and environmentally conscious practices.

Beyond the world of design, what are your personal interests and hobbies that contribute to your overall well-being and creativity?

My love for the outdoors and passion in sports contribute significantly to my well-being and creativity. Engaging in activities like surfing, hockey, running, and cycling allows me to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Where can people follow you and find out more about your brand?

You can explore and shop at www.gigicooke.com and follow @gigi_cooke on Instagram for updates on my latest designs and insights into the creative process.

In the world of bespoke wedding planning, where dreams are meticulously woven into reality, one name stands out as the visionary force behind unparalleled celebrations on the enchanting island of Ibiza — Lauren Kaycee.

As the founder of Hidden Treasures Ibiza, Lauren’s journey is a testament to the art of crafting unique and captivating wedding experiences. From her early days as a singer and performer to the heights of being recognized as the Best Bespoke Wedding Planner and Ibiza Wedding Industry Entrepreneur of the Year, Lauren’s story is a symphony of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to turning love stories into unforgettable moments.

Join us as we delve into the inspirations, challenges, and magical moments that have shaped Lauren’s path, making Hidden Treasures Ibiza a beacon of excellence in the world of destination weddings…

How did the idea of starting Hidden Treasures Ibiza come to you, and what inspired you to venture into the wedding planning industry?

I had been living in Ibiza and working in the wedding and event industry for 10 years already. I was a singer and performer in shows, restaurants, cabaret clubs, weddings, and private events. I progressed into creating shows and bands for such events, managing, directing, styling them, and working on the bookings in general.

I really wanted to concentrate on weddings and go into wedding planning, as I had seen things I loved and things that I knew I could do better! Everyone told me I was crazy and that the market was too competitive and high pressure, so it made me want to do it more!! I had a fire in me and knew something was about to unfold. The core of the wedding industry, of course, is being such a special part of someone’s day, and I longed to be the one creating such incredible moments.

Can you share a pivotal moment or experience that led you to specialise in Ibiza weddings?

As the founder, how do you personally contribute to making each wedding a unique and personalised experience for the couple? I still do lots of the planning for the main weddings. I make the consultation calls and filter the bookings, see which couples match our vibe and how we connect on the call. I find it so inspiring to delve into their dreams and ideas and get to know them a little, which then starts the journey of their entire experience.

I led the team in the design process, and in which suppliers will match their personalities best to enhance their day. We don’t do copy and paste – everything has to be curated individually, and I feel that the only way to hold this promise is to ensure I am involved.

What aspects of a couple’s personality or preferences do you find most inspiring when crafting their wedding experience?

I love a couple who have style and aren’t afraid to go with what they love, and what represents them, rather than going with what everyone else has, or what they think a wedding should be. You will always regret not doing the things you love most! The music they love, how they met, how they laugh together, all inspire me to want to turn their dreams into reality.

What is it about Ibiza that makes it the perfect destination for weddings in your perspective?

Ibiza has utter magic. You can be chic and classy on a rooftop sushi bar, get down and dirty in DC10, or lay in paradise on a beautiful beach. The gastronomy, cobbled streets of Dalt Vila, orange and olive groves in the rolling luscious hills, boutiques and cosmopolitan markets, and of course its hedonistic lifestyle that you can feel in your bones.

The golden hour and sunsets are like no others on earth, and spending even just a little time here leaves such an imprint, it draws you back time and time again.

How do you work with couples to create a bespoke concept for their wedding, and what does this process typically involve?

Really getting to know the couple is what it’s all about. For me, I truly mean it. I have to be a part of their life for 1 to 3 years, we go through the whole journey together of brainstorming, mood boards, and… we will talk about their favourite cuisine, maybe they had Italian food on their first date, so we will have the chef add it to the menu, or perhaps she drank too much tequila one night and he put her to bed, so we will suggest a shot of tequila at the speeches to add humour.

This can also mean suggesting sentimental ideas as a memorial to a loved one who has passed or focusing some moments on a special grandparent. All these small things that create a bespoke experience are to me, essential.

Can you give an example of a unique request that you successfully brought to life?

I had a celebrity couple who were an absolute dream to work with, but of course came with challenges regarding paparazzi. Dealing with press calls, planting decoys, and creating shields with plants and bamboo from the press were all details we will forever look back on, but the best request was the gravy fountain.

Good old British gravy, cascading in a piping hot fountain, where guests delighted in dipping fresh Yorkshire puddings and chunky homemade chips into, was brilliant to witness! I’m always here for a late-night snack, and what better than your absolute favourite food?! Your wedding should represent you and your personality, and that is what makes a wedding…

How did you assemble and mentor your team to ensure that Hidden Treasures Ibiza weddings run seamlessly?

What qualities do you look for when handpicking professionals to join your team? Wedding days are not light work. They are 18 hours on your feet, eating as you go, trying to stay hydrated, problem-solving, and with us as we have the styling aspect as we include all of the decoration, so heavy lifting and moving items round all day long is a huge part of the job.

I need my team to be physically capable and also super professional and composed when client-facing. I look for dedication, individuals that will go out their way to make it work no matter what, who can stay focused and get things done before they even need doing. It takes a special kind of person to work for Hidden Treasures- we are known for having the best team on the island and I am so proud of them all and the reputation we have all built together.

Being unique in including a team of stylists, how do you collaborate with couples to enhance and complement their individual styles?

We are super detail-focused, and our weddings are entirely flawless. It’s something I pride myself on 100%, so it all starts with the mood board. I ask them to create the board, and then we go through all the images, the colour palette, angles, and spaces. We look at what will work logistically considering the hot temperatures and timing of the sunset, and we then create mock-ups and bring them to our studio to play with fabrics, tableware, and flowers, we pull pieces from our showroom and bring in new or specially made items until they are happy with the look, and we are confident we can produce each element.

Share a memorable moment where the styling played a significant role in creating a magical atmosphere.

It is always magical when we flip the aesthetic from day to night. We move quickly and discreetly through the event lighting candles, turning up lighting, setting up the new evening areas with precision, so it seamlessly changes the ambiance to get ready for the party. The styling for me is my favourite part, and I am in love with the reaction on faces of the couple and their guests when they arrive to see their real-life mood board in front of their eyes. Every time is so heartwarming for me, I will never tire of this moment and feeling.

Can you elaborate on the exclusive service that involves discovering the best Ibiza wedding venues? What makes these venues special?

I take the wedding venue search very seriously, I am known for my honesty. It has to be this way to promise a flawless execution. A couple may think they know what they want or like, yet as we delve into the venue search it may become clear to me it isn’t right for them, and it is only with deep inside knowledge of the venues that I am able to advise them of the best match for them.

I always plan a styled shoot at a venue before I add it to my exclusive venues list. This allows me to see how they work, how they cope with all the moving parts, how they are as hosts and how the venue lends itself to logistics and layouts. I need to know for myself without relying on recommendations which may not be genuine. Then I know I can really talk about the venue, sell it and know all the ins and outs of every nook and cranny.

Share a favourite venue or location that you believe encapsulates the essence of a Hidden Treasures Ibiza wedding.

Ouch- I would be lynched if I picked a favourite!! I always say what one venue lacks another offers- some have all the dreamy aesthetics but the indoor space may be limited, and some have the most wonderful staff but the venue is not in the hottest location. They are all stunning, and have impeccable standards, and are glorious in their own right.

How do you ensure that the personal connection between Hidden Treasures Ibiza and the couples remains strong throughout the wedding planning journey?

Connection. We are always connected. We talk all the time, and I am always available. I am there for my couples entirely and completely, and they lean on me with personal issues as well as wedding issues. …… and I have past brides in my life now that I feel honoured to call friends. It’s not just a service I offer, it’s a lifestyle I embrace.

What inspired the idea of incorporating pre and post-wedding celebrations into your services?

The popularity now of hosting three-day-long celebrations is at an all-time high. Especially with a destination wedding. They are likely bringing guests over that will use this time as their yearly or family vacation, so not only do they want to offer more events but it is the best excuse to lengthen the celebrations! Planning the complete package gives us the ability to ensure a different feel for each celebration, where guests can enjoy multiple experiences on the day from nightclubs to yacht parties. We thrive when we get to show off the best Ibiza has to offer!

Can you share an unforgettable pre or post-wedding celebration that stands out in your memory?

Dancing in the DJ booth with Black coffee post wedding, champagne sprays at Nikki Beach, a BBQ on a luxury super yacht, a pregnancy announcement at a pre-wedding garden party… just so many wonderful memories and we cannot wait to create more in 2024!

What motivated you to create luxury elopement packages, and how do they differ from traditional wedding planning?

An elopement is just the couple, with sometimes their children or another couple as their guests. They are ever so intimate and just hit different. Of course, a few years ago with restrictions, they became more popular and were reinvented, but they are still going strong. It gives a couple a chance to spend a smaller amount but on the things they really love, A luxurious stay, a five-star chef and butler service, champagne, a stunning bouquet and designer dress, …it’s not for everyone of course, but it boils down to the vows, the moment of commitment… and is there anything more romantic than being alone in your very own bubble on a clifftop?

Share a romantic or intimate moment from one of your elopements that left a lasting impression.

I cry at every ceremony. Always have always will! But The one I truly broke down on was where the young son of the couple sobbed as he spoke during the ceremony, about how he witnessed so much love in the household between his parents, that it showed him how love was supposed to be, it made him so happy and proud to have such loving parents, and how he hoped he would have this kind of everlasting, undeniable love one day himself.

His words forever in my memory: “ I love how much you love each other and have taught me what love is” I think he was about 8 years old. Every single person sobbed. It still brings tears to my eyes now.

How does it feel to be recognised as the Best Bespoke Wedding Planner and Ibiza Wedding Industry Entrepreneur of the Year by The Global 100?

I was blown away, to be honest. I put my heart and soul into this business, built it from the ground up by myself, and was so overwhelmed when I heard the news. A proud moment is an understatement.

Can you recall a specific client testimonial that truly touched your heart?

All testimonials mean the world to me as I take each one so personally. One that stood out was “ “more importantly, thank you for all the things you did, that I will never even know about, to make our day unforgettable. I know there are many things, and I want you to know, it’s all felt”

How has global recognition, such as the LUXlife 2020 Global Wedding Awards, impacted the growth and reputation of Hidden Treasures Ibiza?

I think each recognition adds value to a business, It certainly gives you more motivation to push forward, which then leads to a much higher standard and in turn, becoming more in demand. I never take any mention, publication or post for granted, it is all valued and all felt.

What advice would you give to aspiring wedding planners looking to make a mark in the industry?

Funny you should ask…I am currently launching a coaching and mentoring business for new wedding pros, or businesses wanting to break into the wedding industry. The course will be launching in spring focusing primarily on Marketing and branding, building relationships, and client experience.

These are the core components that need full attention and dedication before anything else is even addressed. Then you can look at the things surrounding these subjects like where do you want to be, do you want to plan specific styles, and are you looking to offer styling or extra services.

The quote on your website is beautiful. Can you share the story or sentiment behind “When I first saw you, it took every ounce of me…”?

Isn’t it just beautiful! I saw it graffitied on a derelict building, completely misplaced and unexpected, and it took my breath away. I stood and read it about 10 times and then thought it would be the most wonderful phrase to hear from the love of your life, so I had to use it!

Talking of quotes, what’s your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

Not a quote but something I do when I feel stagnant or lack motivation: when I lack motivation I go to nature, The beach or the mountains, take some breaths and imagine I am the couple dancing around my wedding day, laughing with family and getting teary at the speeches I imagine what they would love and what they would remember. I go for a drive and listen to my favourite music full blast. I eat my favourite food and once I have given all my senses a little inspo, I feel back to myself again, and ready to create.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I am currently on a 5 week trip around Sri Lanka and Bali which has been on my list for a while! I love a mini European city break and Paris, believe it or not, is still on my list!, The Azores is high up there, as well as the Philippines.

What’s your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

Not a quote but something I do when I feel stagnant or lack motivation: when I lack motivation I go to nature, The beach or the mountains, take some breaths and imagine I am the couple dancing round my wedding day, laughing with family and getting teary at the speeches I imagine what they would love and what they would remember.

Looking back since launching the business, is there anything you would do differently?

I learned by making mistakes and doing things the hard way, with no mentor and no team, just me. I wish I had given myself less pressure, and taken a breath once in a while, but if I had done anything differently, I wouldn’t be me, and I wouldn’t be where I am right now. Maybe a little more sleep, a little less worry, and a little more hydration!

Where can people follow you and find out more?

I run the Instagram myself as I love interacting with real people. I like to keep it as informative as possible, with tips and Q&As, and inspo, so the highlights are a great starting point. I love chatting to new followers too.

We appreciate your ethos of finding beauty in life’s seasons. How is this reflected in your work?

There is beauty and joy in every season: from the early signs of spring blossoms on winter’s rugged branches, the abundance of colour and energy in summer, to the intensity and fire of colours piercing through the coolness of autumn, providing the ultimate show finale before the retreat of winter.

I create art with nature and consider it a blessing to observe the beauty of a single flower in my designs. To see how each, though the same, has bloomed differently from its neighbour. Depending on the place where it has grown – the soil, the nutrients, the proximity to the sun – all affect the growth of each one differently.

Flowers have taught me that we are not separate from nature but a part of it. We each move through our own seasons, each with its own colour, its own story. How we grow and nurture our growth determines our entire lives.

When we stop seeing ourselves as separate from nature but as a part of it, maybe we will fully appreciate our own beauty and our own seasons. Maybe we will have the courage to step into our own space and “live completely.”

You have such an inspiring love for flowers and nature. Where did this stem from, and how do you want people to feel when they see your floral creations?

I have always been fascinated by flowers and nature. My earliest memory is of a photo with my dad; I’m around one year old, sitting in the garden. He’s lying on the grass behind me, posing for the photo. I don’t recall the photo being taken, but I have a vivid memory of two things when I see the photo: the warmth of my dad behind me and the feelings of the blades of grass on the palm of my hand, creating a sense of wonder and grounding.

Core memories from childhood centre around nature. I remember discovering the enormous root system of an overturned tree, about three times the height of eight-year-old me, fixated on the beauty of the twists and turns of its growth; this beautiful network of a tree that had lived its entire life unseen.

I like to explore the beauty and rawness of nature and reflect the season in every design. I aim to create the same sense of wonder and awe that nature gives to me.

Who’s involved in the business, and what does an average day look like for you?

Day-to-day, I fly solo, building incredible design proposals for clients, but I rely on a team of freelancers and artists who help bring a project to life at an event.

No one day is the same. I may be in front of a computer answering inquiries or building proposals, but in peak wedding season, I’m in a cycle of sourcing, ordering, and conditioning flowers before creating table arrangements, bouquets, buttonholes, and installations.

What advice would you offer anyone who wants to start their own business?

Just begin. My business came from a quiet, unrelenting voice asking me to begin. It was, for me, something I couldn’t ignore. I think anyone starting a business needs to see it as an extension of themselves. It needs to be authentically you, based on a desire that burns deep within because it will permeate your entire life. It needs to be from you and of you. It won’t be perfect from the start. You will make mistakes. But not starting is the greatest failure. Then, think about what you want your business to look like in 5 years, set to creating that and don’t deviate.

Looking back since you started, is there anything that you would do differently?

As a maker and a business owner, you are what you make. You create your clients from your work and what you put out into the world. There are some projects I wouldn’t do again that have become lessons learned. Listening to that voice when something doesn’t feel right. Saying no becomes just as important as those you say yes to.

Outside of the business, what is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

It’s not a quote per se, but my personal mantra is to “Live completely” – do it all, feel it all, don’t regret a thing. Even the tough parts are there to direct you back to the right track.

Our readers love to travel; what destination is on your must-visit list?

So many places. I love to travel and have been lucky to see lots of places, but two life goals are 1) Japan in spring to see the cherry blossoms in abundance and to do some ikebana classes with the masters and 2) Cappadocia, Turkey, in the summer to see the hot air balloon festival.

What does self-care mean to you?

I have recognised the importance of having time to pause. I used to crave time on my own and think there must be something wrong with me or my marriage until I found this quote about solitude from Paulo Coelho.

What’s your 5-year vision for the brand?

To be recognised as an artist that creates immersive experiences with flora for weddings, events, and brands internationally. To share the power of nature and wellbeing in workshops for floral enthusiasts.

In the luminous realm where artistry meets craftsmanship, Aurora Laffite stands as a beacon, illuminating the world of fine jewellery with her enchanting designs. House of Coco had the privilege of delving into the captivating narrative of Aurora, a visionary jewellery designer whose passion for natural gemstones and dedication to authenticity have shaped the identity of Aurora Laffite Jewelry.

Embarking on a journey that began with childhood curiosity, Aurora shares the specific moment that ignited her fervour for jewellery, weaving a tale of family heirlooms, broken necklaces, and a transformative decision in the vibrant backdrop of Honduras. Her narrative unfolds as a testament to the power of hands-on craftsmanship, with each piece resonating with the intensity of physical creation and the intricate dance between traditional techniques and modern technology.

Through the lens of success, Aurora shares her invaluable advice for aspiring designers, emphasizing the fusion of passion and practicality. Her vision for Aurora Laffite Jewelry extends beyond the glimmering facets of gemstones; it becomes a legacy passed down through generations, an embodiment of elegance that transcends fleeting trends.

Join us in this illuminating conversation as we uncover the depths of Aurora’s creative process, her unwavering commitment to authenticity, and the dreams that breathe life into the House of Coco. Aurora Laffite’s story is not just about jewelry; it’s an ode to the timeless artistry that adorns life’s most precious moments, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of elegance and individuality.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that first ignited your passion for natural gemstones and jewellery design?

All my life, I’ve been fascinated by jewellery. I remember looking at my grandmother’s and mother’s rings and earrings, wondering how they were made. When my father told me that a jeweller crafted them, I envisioned a man soldering metal and cutting stones, which, to my young mind, didn’t seem too feminine. For years, I only thought about wearing jewellery. However, during a vacation in Honduras, a broken necklace led me to a store offering beading classes. Choosing to fix it myself opened a new door in my mind.

What was that transformative moment of fixing a broken piece of jewellery like, and how did it shape your path as a jewellery designer?

It started with beading, and I couldn’t get my mind off it, but I knew I wanted to do much more complicated work than just assembling pieces. Back in New York City, I started taking bench classes in metalsmithing and wax carving at a local art school. That’s when I was really able to start making the kind of pieces I was envisioning in my mind. The physicality of bending, pounding, and melting metal is so intense, and when the final piece emerges elegant and pretty, it was such a thrill. There was no turning back; I was hooked.

Coming from Honduras to New York City must have been quite a transition. How has your cultural background influenced your design aesthetics and the overall ethos of Aurora Laffite Jewelry?

Certainly, there is a big difference in the aesthetic of my two homes. Honduras is largely about finding the beauty in nature, revelling in the colours and feelings of the tropical environment. New York City, on the other hand, is the glamorous capital of America, with glittering skyscrapers and the excitement of high-end fashion. I’m inspired to combine these two worlds, bringing lush colours into the bustling city of grand glamour.

You mentioned taking art classes in Manhattan and later advancing to GIA for cutting-edge jewellery software. How do traditional craftsmanship and modern technology blend in your creative process?

I’m glad I started with physically making the jewellery by hand – it gave me knowledge about manufacturing that reading alone couldn’t provide. But, wanting more advanced knowledge, I turned to GIA and CAD. It was a transition from a blowtorch to a computer program, but blending the skills from both techniques became freeing. Now, I start designs with jewellery software, where the only limit is my imagination, but always have it 100% hand-finished.

Your brand is known for its emphasis on high-quality, natural gemstones and solid precious metals. Why is this commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship so important to you?

I’ve experienced pieces tarnishing over time, and understanding the difference between gold-plated, gold-filled, and solid gold made me prioritise quality. I want to create fun, modern designs that last a lifetime, passed down from generation to generation. Natural gemstones, with their complex science, have fascinated people for thousands of years, and I’m proud to continue that tradition.

Each piece from Aurora Laffite Jewelry is individually made-to-order. How does this personalised What happened? approach contribute to the unique connection your customers have with your creations?

There’s something special about an item made specifically for you. It has emotional value beyond the purchase, connecting the customer to the piece. As a startup, working exclusively with precious materials, made-to-order ensures uniqueness, though it’s challenging to have every size in stock.

How do you measure the impact and fulfilment of your work?

I feel successful when a customer wears my designs and feels extra special and beautiful. When the piece connects with their personal style, enhancing their uniqueness – that’s the entire point of jewellery. When it finds its way to the right person, it’s a fantastic feeling that drives me to keep creating.

We’d love to know more about the inspirations behind your designs. Are there specific artists, places, or eras that consistently influence your creative vision?

Certainly, one of my biggest inspirations is nature, reflected in my newest collections, “La Fleur Rouge” and the “Humming Beauty Set.” “La Fleur Rouge” draws from childhood memories of my grandmother’s garden, and the “Humming Beauty Set” captures the magical experience of encountering iridescent hummingbirds.

We understand your belief that jewellery is an expression of individualism. How do you ensure that your designs capture the essence of each person’s unique style and personality?

For “La Fleur Rouge” and “The Humming Beauty Set,” I pull specifics from my own life, aiming to connect with customers in an emotionally resonant way. While their past may be different, our childhood memories are interlaced with the same glow of nostalgia.

You’ve mentioned that you see jewellery as a way for women to feel dazzling and empowered. Can you recall a customer’s story that particularly touched you and reinforced this belief?

One of my set designs was sold to a woman who loved them so much that she later ordered a customised matching pair for her daughter. This meant a lot to me because it connects two generations, strengthening their bond when they wear the matching set.

How has New York City itself played a role in shaping your artistic identity and business?

One of my designs, “The SkyTower Set,” is directly inspired by the glamour of the “big city.” It represents the entire city, glowing and glittering at night, like its own jewel. My hope is that set will make someone feel – no matter whether they’re at a Manhattan event or off in the countryside – like they’re shining bright, straight from the very centre of the world’s culture.

As a successful entrepreneur, what advice would you give to aspiring designers or individuals looking to start their own creative ventures?

Research your market, understand your customers, and listen to their needs. Build something you are personally passionate about because that passion will keep you motivated through challenges. Love what you do, so external noise won’t slow you down.

Beyond the world of jewellery, what are some of your other creative outlets or artistic pursuits that influence your designs?

Living in New York City, I have access to some of the greatest museums in the world, and I love going to places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA. Just looking at their colour mixes and varied use of shapes and style can be so inspiring.

What does success mean to you as the founder and designer of Aurora Laffite Jewelry?

Success, to me, is taking my passion and vision and bringing that out to a wide audience that cherishes my designs.

Travel often sparks creativity. Are there any specific destinations on your travel wish list that you believe would inspire future jewellery collections?

As a Central American, I feel proud to say that there is a lot to explore there that can help everyone find inspiration. I aim to keep exploring my native Honduras, as well as our neighbours, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and all of the Central American isthmus.

Looking back on your journey, is there anything you would do differently, and what valuable lessons have you learned along the way?

I wish I had learned sooner to stop looking for perfection. Sometimes imperfections make something extra beautiful. I was hesitant to make the next move in my life because I felt like I had to wait until everything was “right,” but really, I just needed to dive in and dare to move forward.

In the world of fine jewellery, trends can come and go. How do you stay true to your artistic vision while remaining adaptable to evolving tastes?

My goal is to create jewellery that has one foot in classic design and the other in the modern world. True elegance never goes out of fashion, and that’s what I aspire to make.

What legacy do you hope to leave through Aurora Laffite Jewelry, both in terms of artistic impact and societal contribution?

I hope my jewellery is passed down from generation to generation, standing the test of time. I aim to bring out the glory of natural gemstones, supporting ethical mining practices and continuing a tradition of making art that connects to a woman’s natural beauty.

Outside of the demanding world of jewellery design, how do you unwind and find joy in your personal life?

I enjoy going to museums, spending time in nature, and having quality time with my family. Being with my toddler, who constantly demands attention, is the most fulfilling experience.

Lastly, if you could collaborate with any artist or designer, living or historical, who would it be and why?

Since I was little, I’ve always admired Carolina Herrera’s elegant, classic designs. To me, it would be a dream-come-true to collaborate with someone who’s made her mark so powerfully. What she’s accomplished is what I aspire to do myself.

Hi Jackie! It’s wonderful to have you here. Can you share a bit about your journey into photography and how Jackie O Photos came to life?

Thank you for giving me this opportunity!

Thinking about it, I feel like I was always destined to be a newborn photographer, even if I didn’t know it was a career option. Although I have worked very hard to get where I am, a lot of the time it feels like the universe has been guiding me along the way, you know?

Let’s go back in time to the 90s. According to my parents, I have loved babies since I was a baby myself. I had an extensive collection of dolls and ‘Precious Moments’ figurines, and I was completely enamoured by Anne Geddes’ baby photography. I had some of her dolls, collected her calendars, and excitedly pointed out her photographs everywhere I could find them in public.

My first camera was a blue, red, and yellow Fisher Price Perfect Shot kids’ camera. I loved playing ‘Photographer’ and posing my baby dolls for what felt like professional shoots at the time. For years, I begged my parents for a sibling. When my little brother finally came along, I was 10 years old and overjoyed. I happily took on the role of “Mom junior,” never putting him down unless I had to. He became my favorite model to practice on, and to this day, he’s one of my biggest cheerleaders.

In my first year at the University of Toronto, I enrolled in the Art and Art History Program, which included a photography class. In true artist fashion, I marched to the beat of my own drum, not caring much about assignment guidelines or technical details. Hoping for better career prospects, I ended up changing majors and graduated with a degree in Environmental Science, not knowing I’d circle back to Photography years later.

When I got married, I casually mentioned my interest in photography to my wedding photographer JD. Imagine my shock and delight when he handed me his camera during the reception! He must have recognized some natural talent in me because that led to the opportunity to photograph some weddings and events with him, which gave me a boost of confidence and helped me learn how to properly use a camera.

Weddings were a lot of fun, but I found I gravitated toward capturing the sweet moments between parents and their kids. Seeing the pure joy that young children brought to everyone’s faces, documenting kids stealing candy from the sweet table, napping on the floor during a busy reception, or owning the dance floor with infectious enthusiasm.

The real game-changer happened when my step-sister insisted I try out newborn photography with her baby. Armed with just a faux fur Christmas tree skirt, a boppy pillow, and natural light from a sliding glass door, I made it work! That experience lit a spark, and I was hooked!

As a busy mom with two boys and a supportive husband, how do you balance your personal life with running a successful photography business?

Oh, juggling a photography business with two busy boys is no small feat, that’s for sure! I’m grateful that my husband believes in me and trusts that I either know what I’m doing, or that I’ll figure it out! Did I mention that he’s a great cook as well? Seriously, that’s one thing I couldn’t manage anywhere near as well as he does.

Until fall 2022, I had both kids at home with me, so I could only work during naptime and after they had gone to bed, late into the night. If I tried to pull out my laptop when they were awake, it would get slammed shut by curious baby hands, or become a victim to a rogue Paw Patrol toy flying through the air. Neither of our kids slept well, so my husband and I survived on years of limited, broken sleep. To be honest, my little one still isn’t a great sleeper. I think I’d sacrifice a limb for more sleep at this point, haha!

Luckily I’m a natural night owl, so I’ve embraced the late-night creativity and ability to hyper-focus. Editing photos or diving into something that interests me can easily make hours fly by without me noticing or even getting up to refill my water.

Juggling a photography business and family life can be demanding. How do you overcome challenges and stay motivated on busy days?

As for staying motivated, I’ve got this mindset that failure is not an option. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not a perfectionist by any means… and all of my former math teachers can vouch for that! If something doesn’t click or I’m not feeling it, I’m happy to switch things up. Taking breaks and embracing the slow seasons have been crucial to preventing burnout at times, and I think it’s important to occasionally step back, take a look at how things are going, and reevaluate.

But if I sense deep down that I can do something great if I just stick with it through the rough patches, then I won’t give up. Quitting is simply not on the table, unless I truly stop enjoying this lifestyle and feel called to something else. Continuous learning and improvement are really motivating as well. I’m not afraid to ask for help from people who know more than I do and are willing to share their knowledge, because that’s the only way to really make it in this game!

We love the cozy home studio concept of Jackie O Photos! What inspired you to create a warm and inviting space for your clients?

As a parent myself, I completely understand that the time right after having a new baby can be incredibly vulnerable. Parents, especially moms, are navigating exhaustion, post-delivery recovery, and a whole array of new challenges, all while wanting to fiercely protect their little ones. My goal is to make this experience as stress-free as possible for them. The convenience of a home studio allows me to get to know my clients on a more intimate level, and I feel like it helps us connect, as I’m inviting them into my space as well.

I remember the early days of parenthood, where leaving the house with a newborn felt like a monumental task. Adding a toddler or older children to the mix only amplifies the challenge. That’s why I strive to make everything comfortable and convenient right here. From spare wipes and diapers to my adorable studio wardrobe for babies and toys to keep older siblings busy, I’ve got it covered. There’s even a park just two doors over for a quick escape if the weather is nice.

During our sessions, parents can sit back and relax – literally. Whether they choose to sit on the couch and watch or join in the photos, they don’t need to worry about a thing. I’ve had a mom even fall asleep on my couch once, and I thought that was wonderful because it showed me just how comfortable she felt here (and she probably really needed that nap, too!). I often finish a session feeling like I’ve made new friends, and I like to follow my clients on social media to catch glimpses of how their adorable babies are growing up too.

Beyond photography, what are some of your favourite podcasts that you enjoy listening to in your free time?

Oooh, good question. When my son was a baby, he was a consistent 5:00 a.m. riser. No matter what. We went for a LOT of walks, and podcasts kept me sane during that time! One podcast that stands out is ‘This Can’t Be That Hard’ by Annemie Tonken. Her great advice and the community she’s built thanks to the podcast and courses she offers have been instrumental in boosting my motivation and contributing to my success. Her podcast really made me believe I could make this work, even when I was a beginner and practically working for free.

On a fun, not photography related note, I’m a huge fan of diving DEEP into podcasts that discuss whatever TV show I’m obsessed with at the time. If I’m engrossed in a series, I love immersing myself in discussions about plot lines, characters, and backstories. If I’m watching a reality series, I just love to hear others’ thoughts and commentary about how funny, ridiculous, or fake the moments on the show are. It’s my way of enhancing the enjoyment of the show and shutting off my busy brain for some downtime.

Baking and sweets seem to be a passion of yours. Do you have a signature dish or favourite treat that you love making?

Absolutely! I have the world’s biggest sweet tooth. I bake everything from scratch as I truly believe it tastes better that way. As basic as it sounds, I love to make chocolate chip cookies and I’ve been using the same recipe since I was 15 years old. Despite trying many others, I always come back to this one because it’s a real crowd-pleaser, and one I often drop off on my neighbours’ doorsteps.

Other than the classic chocolate chip cookies, there are a few other goodies I’ve mastered over the years. I can confidently say I bake a mean chocolate, red velvet, and carrot cake, and a really yummy rice pudding. Now, I know rice pudding is a bit divisive – some people find the texture a bit off-putting, but hey, to each their own!

It’s clear that family is important to you. How do your experiences as a mother influence your approach to capturing family moments for your clients?

I think being a Mom makes me more relatable because I’ve been where my clients are, and I completely understand what they’re going through. Sometimes clients will apologize for a crying baby or an uncooperative toddler, and I always reassure them that it’s not a big deal at all (it’s even expected, really!) and not to feel bad at all. My kids have taught me an enormous amount of patience, and I’ve found that maintaining a calm demeanour has a comforting effect on my clients.

I also remember which moments felt big and important to me as a new Mom, and I try to document the features and stages that are most precious to look back on. Chubby wrist rolls and big curious eyes, gummy smiles and the first few teeth poking through the gums, thumb sucking, babies playing with their toes – something neither of my own kids had much interest in, sadly! Every stage lasts for such a short time and should be cherished. I want to ensure that these precious details are preserved for my clients to look back on with joy, and to show their own children one day too!

You mentioned always having a camera in your hand. Can you share a memorable moment you’ve captured spontaneously that holds a special place in your heart?

Oh, there’s this one memorable and spontaneous moment that truly stands out – the Triplets!

One day, I was driving home from the grocery store and spotted a mom pushing a triplet stroller just a street over from mine. The thought crossed my mind, ‘Wow, I wish I could photograph triplets!’

Once I got home and put away the groceries, that urge to seize the moment felt a little overwhelming. So, I went back out, found the Mom still on her walk, and approached her with a big smile. I mustered the courage to hand over a business card and express my desire to photograph her babies, acknowledging that I know it might sound a bit sketchy. I assured her there was absolutely no pressure, and to my delight, she did end up reaching out!

At the time, I hadn’t realised that her triplets were identical. Photographing identical triplets was undoubtedly a career high for me. I did some online digging and discovered that the chances of having identical triplets are only about one in 200 million. Now, here’s the best part – I somehow captured a moment where all three babies are looking directly at the camera, and almost perfectly mirroring each other’s body language. It was pure luck, and I’m still in awe of how it came together. That particular photo has found a special place on my business card.

Going through old photo albums is a nostalgic experience for many. What’s your favorite memory captured in a photo from your own collection?

If I had to choose a favorite, I might seem like a bit of a downer… but when it comes to happy moments, the abundance of photos taken during these times makes it impossible to pick. My personal preference for favorites leans towards photos that capture interesting, impactful, or important moments in our lives. Not necessarily the happiest or cutest moments.

My most treasured collection of photographs is from our time at home during the pandemic lockdowns. Those days were marked by isolation during the significant addition of our second child, and during what should have been fun, exciting, and happy times in my young children’s lives. I made a deliberate effort to document our experience – photographing signs at the local park during its closure, capturing my kids staring out the window, looking bored, or engaged in imaginative play and enjoying each other’s company.

I made myself a photo book out of these photos and chose to make the photos black and white. The monochrome aesthetic somehow captures the heaviness of those moments, you know? Having my camera with me during that time not only allowed me to document it, but I think helped me process everything that was happening and properly remember all the winter months that seemed to blend together.

Your focus on a baby’s comfort and safety is commendable. How do you ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the little ones during your photoshoots?

Ensuring the safety and comfort of the little ones during photo sessions is my top priority. I’ve undergone safety training through APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International), equipping me with the skills and knowledge to create a safe setting for each session. One key aspect of my approach is avoiding any poses that feel unnatural or risky for the baby.

I believe in following the baby’s lead to understand their unique comfort preferences. Some babies have torticollis, which is a fancy name for a really stiff neck due to being cramped in the womb for 9 months! That can make it uncomfortable for them to turn their head in a certain direction. Another example – I recently had a baby who had been in a frank breech position in the womb, and it became apparent that he wasn’t comfortable with the typical leg-swaddling poses. In cases like these, I let the baby guide the session, allowing them to position themselves in a way that feels most comfortable to them. It’s all about adapting to the individual needs and cues of each baby, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both the little one and their parents.

As a photographer, continuous learning is crucial. Which photography courses have had a significant impact on your skills and style?

Ah, the world of photography is a playground for perpetual learners like me! I’ve taken some game-changing courses that have significantly impacted my skills and style. Kelly Brown’s Newborn Photography Bootcamp was like my photography ABCs – it gave me the foundation for my understanding of posing, angles, and setting up my studio when I was first starting out.

Then, there’s Shan Fisher, master of the ‘timeless white studio look.’ Her course helped hone my ability to achieve the clean and timeless white style that I was drawn to. Although it may seem simple to photograph on all white without props, it really requires you to be creative to get a varied gallery and a lot of patience to get truly white whites. Her guidance helped me appreciate the beauty of simplicity and learn how to capture a diverse gallery of photos without using traditional newborn poses and props.

Lastly, let’s not forget the wonderful Annemie Tonken. Her courses and podcast feel like having a VIP backstage pass to succeed in the business side of photography. Her courses are the secret sauce that adds flavor to what can be an incredibly dry business side of photography. Thanks to her guidance, I’ve found the sweet spot where my passion and interests meet professionalism and business sense, allowing me to continue doing what I love and delivering the best experience for my clients.

We’d love to hear about your aspirations and goals for Jackie O Photos in the coming years. Any exciting projects or milestones on the horizon?

Oh, it’s a busy place, my brain. I am always daydreaming of the future and where I want to take my business. I’m constantly tweaking my home studio to make it not just functional but also a cozy and inspiring space. I’m on a mission to fill these walls with more of my photography – you know, the kind that tells a story, evokes strong feelings, and inspires my clients to do the same in their homes!

I’ve recently had the thrill of seeing my work in print – first, in a newborn photography magazine called Tinies, then British Vogue, and soon an upcoming feature in Vanity Fair. Last year, I had the honor of winning first place in a newborn photography competition with APNPI, which really confirmed for me that the countless hours I’ve poured into my business are paying off. It’s so rewarding to feel that recognition.

Right now, I’ve submitted my work to become a Qualified Newborn Photographer (QNP) with APNPI and should hear back soon. After that, the next step would be an accreditation in naturally posed newborns or sitters (older babies) somewhere down the line. “Accreditation in a category is a recognition beyond that of the QNP Certified Photographer. It’s among the higher level recognitions, representing an above-average quality of photographic artistry.”

Why am I chasing these goals? Simple – it’s all about striving to be the best I can be and making sure my clients are not only happy but downright thrilled with the memories we’re preserving together. I’m truly passionate about what I do, and I really love my clients. So naturally, I want to push myself to succeed in whatever way I can.

Given your love for babies, what’s the most heartwarming or funny moment you’ve experienced during a newborn photoshoot?

Cake smashes are an absolute blast! There’s just something incredibly fun about watching those little ones devour a cake. I can’t help but laugh out loud along with the parents when a baby dives in with no hands, just pure face-first enthusiasm in a pile of icing. It’s a priceless and often hilarious moment that never gets old.

Now, when it comes to heartwarming scenes, twin babies steal the show. Seeing them interact, cuddle up beside each other, and sometimes even holding hands is just too precious. Twins have this magical connection that unfolds right before my lens. They feed each other cake, playfully snatch toys, and what’s truly fascinating is how their personalities, even in identical twins, can be completely opposite.

Travel often sparks creativity. Are there any destinations on your bucket list that you believe would inspire your photography?

Greece and England are two places overseas that I loved, and I’d happily explore almost anywhere in Europe in a heartbeat! While I have a bunch of dream destinations on my bucket list, they’re not necessarily about seeking inspiration for my photography. I find my muse in human interactions, the love between people, and the pure joy that children bring to their families. Now, if I could document babies in a completely different cultural setting, that would be a dream. Though, I might have to rethink the idea of photographing strange babies – that might raise a few eyebrows, right? Haha!

Our readers love to travel; what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Honestly, lately I’m all about exploring the beauty within Canada! I’ve really enjoyed the beautiful forests and mountain views when visiting the West Coast, but there’s so much more in this country that I haven’t seen. Places like Banff, Quebec City, and the East Coast are calling my name. Canada has incredibly diverse landscapes, and I’d really love to explore the wonders of my own backyard.

Finally, if you could offer one piece of advice to aspiring photographers or moms pursuing their passions, what would it be?

Honestly? Being a photographer means being a business owner, and that’s one thing I think many of us don’t consider in the beginning.

Running the show takes discipline and an immense amount of passion, commitment, and maybe a hint of stubbornness to not quit when the going gets tough! Sure, we get the pleasure of making beautiful art that our clients love and admire, but running a business based on your talents and passions also means diving into the realms of accounting, marketing, bookkeeping, advertising, website creation, SEO, social media, and the whole business shebang. It demands a massive chunk of your time, energy, and also, a financial investment – because let’s face it, businesses take a while to turn profitable.

Here’s the golden nugget: Once you’ve mastered your craft, charge what you’re worth. It’s not just about making ends meet; it’s about building a sustainable income, saving for the future, and keeping your business afloat. Your time is valuable. It may sound like a rollercoaster, and it is, but let me tell you – it’s an incredibly rewarding ride. There’s a unique joy in capturing those monumental moments for people, knowing that you’re the one who took the photos that families look back on over and over, for years to come. These are the snapshots they’ll fondly share with their own children, creating a beautiful legacy through your lens.

Ellen Murray’s journey is a celebration of entrepreneurial spirit, creative ingenuity, and the boundless happiness that can be found in the most unexpected places.

Can you tell us about the moment when the idea for Margot Camper first struck you? What inspired you to combine vintage VWs, photography, and props into this unique concept?

I have always LOVED a photo booth; ask any of my friends, and they will tell you I am always the one dragging everyone into the booth, and I will be there for at least four goes. My dad owns a couple of very successful VW garages and has done so for about 22 years now. When my sister and I were 11 and 7, he bought us this beautiful 1965 pink floral camper.

Then one day, while I was sitting in Margot taking selfies with my friend’s little sausage dog, I thought, “Why don’t we make this into a photo booth?” There must be a way of combining my love for photos, props, and vintage pink camper vans, and there was! I have always wanted to work within the events industry, and having Margot has really helped me achieve this. It has been a good way for me to also use my photography skills and capture the memories getting captured in the camper!

Fashion photography and vintage VW campers seem like quite the dynamic duo. How did your background in fashion photography contribute to the creation of Margot Camper?

When I was in my second year of college, I used Margot for a 60’s styled photo shoot with one of my best friends, Martha. She’s a model, and we styled her in a pink 1960’s dress, shooting the whole thing on 35mm color and black & white film. We did this to convey the vintage feel, and it’s still one of my favorite shoots.

Vintage camper vans are iconic; as soon as I think of a camper van, I think of the 60s, Twiggy, Mary Quant, The Beatles, and I think studying fashion photography really allowed me to look into the trends and influences of the 60s/70s.

Your campervan is a fantastic blend of 1970s and modern photography technology. How do you balance these two eras in your business aesthetics?

Margot is a fantastic blend of vintage and modern. We have kept her paint, pattern, and fabulous pink exactly how we found her, and we were very reluctant to change her look/style; we wanted to preserve her vintage charm. We have only modernized the inside and kitted it out with the newest and most professional camera equipment. We have incorporated 1970s-inspired elements such as retro-themed upholstery, vintage accessories, and nostalgic details.

Vintage VW campers often have their own unique personalities. If Margot the camper had a personality, how would you describe it?

She is the life of the party! Bubbly, fun, and FULL of character. She is definitely one of a kind.

Margot Camper is all about combining creativity and joy. How has running this business influenced your own creative pursuits and overall happiness?

Running Margot Camper has greatly influenced my own creative pursuits and overall happiness. I have recently left my full-time job to make running Margot my main priority, and I am so excited for what’s to come. Having Margot has provided me with opportunities to collaborate with other talented creatives.

Being a photographer myself, I have really been able to push myself with creating my own styled shoots featuring Margot, and having this business has pushed me to network with some amazing people within the industry! Witnessing the positive impact that Margot has on our couples and the fabulous people that book us contributes to my own sense of happiness and fulfillment.

With your background in fashion photography, you likely have a keen eye for aesthetics. How do you curate the perfect atmosphere within Margot camper for people to feel comfortable and creative?

Creating the perfect atmosphere within Margot involves a careful curation of elements to ensure comfort and creativity. Our interior color scheme creates a sense of tranquility, following through with the pastel color theme and neutral tones. The added accessories such as cushions, blankets, and deck chairs propped up outside of the camper make it feel really relaxed and warming; the more comfortable people feel, the better the photos!

Instagram has become a hub for sharing creative photos. How has the Instagram community embraced Margot Camper, and do you have a favorite Instagram moment involving your camper?

I love Instagram; I think it’s great for businesses like ours as it is such a creative platform. We have managed to connect with lots of amazing brands, and so many opportunities have been opened up to us via Instagram. A favorite Instagram moment of mine would have to be one of our early posts; we used my friend’s sausage dogs and dressed them up in cute little Hawaiian hats and took the best photos. It had such a good response!

Starting a unique business like Margot Camper must have come with its own set of challenges. Could you share a hurdle faced and how you overcame it in the early stages?

I think one of the main struggles I had when starting out was working out how to transport Margot to events. When we first thought of converting her, she wasn’t the smoothest to drive, shall we say; she is a 57-year-old bug, and that in itself comes with its own hurdles, ha-ha! But with a little bit of tweaking, she now drives like a dream if we keep it local, and for the events we have a bit further away, we trailer her (which has also been a fun thing to learn).

Running a business requires dedication. What keeps you motivated and excited about Margot Camper, even on the busiest days?

I can’t imagine myself doing anything else; it doesn’t feel like work. We get to be a part of someone’s special day/event, and that’s special. I feel so privileged that couples pick Margot to be a part of one of the most special days of their lives. She brings so much fun and pure enjoyment while capturing memories that last forever.

The journey from an idea to a successful business is inspiring. What advice would you give to someone with a unique idea, looking to take their first steps toward entrepreneurship?

Don’t give up! My dad always tells me that anything worth having doesn’t come easy, and he’s not wrong. When I was younger, we used to watch Only Fools and Horses together, and one of the main characters sayings was “He who dares, wins,” and sometimes you’ve got to just go for it!

Photographing people having fun can be infectious. Do you have a personal favorite funny or candid moment that you’ve captured in Margot Camper?

There have been so many! The funniest moments to watch are when it’s getting towards the end of the night, and everyone’s had a few drinks; everything is 10x funnier when you’re drunk, and it’s brilliant to see. A couple of weeks ago, we were at Pennard Hill Farm at Glastonbury, and that was probably my favorite event of the year. It was an Elton John themed party, so everyone was dressed brilliantly; the organizers of the event jumped in Margot, and all started singing Rocket Man, then everybody else came over to Margot and joined in, it was fab!

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

California without a doubt. I would love to do a road trip around the US; maybe Margot could relocate? Watch this space!

Where can people follow you and find out more?

You can find us on Instagram camper and over on our website. We would LOVE to hear from you! We have also recently launched our brand-new booth, the ICON, which is a beautifully handmade artisan booth that offers so much more than just photos; you can find out what it has to offer on the ICON section of our website!

Step into the captivating world of Milly, a visionary artist whose work transcends the boundaries of emotion and vulnerability. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the intricate tapestry of Milly’s artistic journey, exploring the genesis of her collection “Intimacy” and the profound messages it carries.

With each stroke and digital creation, Milly invites us to confront the complexities of human connection, challenging societal norms and fostering a dialogue around love, vulnerability, and the pursuit of authenticity.

Join us on this inspiring odyssey as Milly shares the stories behind her thought-provoking pieces, offering a glimpse into the very soul of her art. Prepare to be moved, enlightened, and inspired by an artist who fearlessly confronts the depths of intimacy to reshape the narrative of human connection….

Milly, your collection “Intimacy” explores the complexities of the concept. How do you translate such a deeply personal theme into your artwork, and what messages do you hope viewers take away from it?

Honestly, translating something as deep and personal onto a canvas and sharing it with the world was challenging. I drew inspiration from my personal experiences in understanding the meaning of intimacy and our generation’s struggle with craving it while grappling with how to attain it. I hope viewers take away the importance of allowing oneself to fall in love and embrace emotional vulnerability. Our generation often fears intimacy due to a desire for independence, but this collection urges understanding that both can coexist.

Inspirations Behind “Naked Mind”

“Naked Mind” delves into unfiltered thoughts and emotions. What personal experiences or reflections inspired you to create this piece, and how do you navigate the fine line between vulnerability and artistic expression?

Being an overthinker, “Naked Mind” portrays my interpretation of thoughts devoid of overthinking, fear of judgment, and insecurities. I aim to capture the intimacy of the mind in human connections, emphasizing the courage it takes to accept and reveal one’s dark thoughts. Vulnerability is inseparable from artistic expression; it is the essence that distinguishes impactful art from the ordinary.

Physical Intimacy in “Innocent Embrace”: “She said nothing with her voice and everything with her touch” – this quote from “Innocent Embrace” is powerful. How do you believe physical touch contributes to genuine intimacy, and what societal misconceptions about physical intimacy were you aiming to challenge through this piece?

This piece aims to emphasise how physical touch can evoke a sense of innocence and purity. In today’s society, there’s a misconception that physical intimacy is solely about sex. “Innocent Embrace” challenges this notion, highlighting that simple acts like being embraced in a loved one’s arms create a deeper connection, countering the fear of emotional intimacy after sex.

Perspective in “Fleeting Devotion”: Your “Fleeting Devotion” series explores the concept of looking through a rose-colored lens. Can you share more about the inspiration behind this series and your perspective on the balance between idealized moments and the reality of human connections?

“Fleeting Devotion” captures the depth of falling for someone and the struggle to accept their flaws. The series questions whether the decision to embrace imperfections or let go turns moments into fleeting devotion. It explores the dichotomy between idealised love and the reality of human connections, portraying the tension between acceptance and letting go.

“Love isn’t always enough” is a thought-provoking message from “Unconscious Resistance.” What motivated you to portray the struggle between the mind and heart, and how do you see this internal conflict impacting our pursuit of true intimacy?

“Unconscious Resistance” portrays the internal struggle when love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship. The piece explores the conflict between the mind urging detachment and the heart clinging to love. This universal struggle influences the pursuit of true intimacy, emphasising the need to reconcile the emotional and rational aspects of love.

Your take on the concept of “love is blind” in “Willfully Blinded” is intriguing. How do you depict blind trust in your artwork, and what do you believe is the role of trust and vulnerability in building a strong, intimate connection?

“Willfully Blinded” depicts blind trust as an emotional trust fall, where one lets go and allows someone to guide them. Trust and vulnerability are foundational in building strong connections. Without blind trust, relationships can become toxic. The piece emphasizes that deep trust takes time, preventing accusations, arguments, and fostering stability in intimate connections.

“In the beginning of any relationship, we’re hiding what we find ugly or dark.” How does “Sightless Vulnerability” capture the challenges of being open and vulnerable in relationships, and what advice do you have for navigating the fear of judgment in exposing our true selves?

Don’t rush yourself. That is my biggest piece of advice to anyone scared to open up and be vulnerable in any type of relationship, whether it be friendly or romantic. I know for me, my friends have had quite an experience trying to get to know me, never quite feeling like they can reach me… an enigma is the word one has used before.

So this fear of being vulnerable, of being judged, or leaving makes it easy to let that consume us and that’s why I created Sightless Vulnerability to confront my fear and try to let this aspect of myself go. Sometimes the dark or ugly side is actually what humanises us and creates the intimate emotional bond we crave.

Your love for the Asian folklore, The Red String of Fate, is evident in “Threaded Fate.” How has this childhood story influenced your perception of love, and how do you infuse its essence into your artistic representation?

I think it has impacted the way I view love significantly. I am the type of girl who does not fall easily but when I do I give it everything. I do believe in fate, soulmates and finding my person, and to some that may sound childish but what can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic deep down inside. I do believe that when I am lucky enough to meet my person, I’ll know, and even if we can’t be together or we grow apart if they really are my soulmate, we will find our way back to each other.

And if we don’t it just means the right guy is out there and I can’t wait to meet him. I created this piece to represent how it takes two people to choose each other and how this string connects us to those meant to be in our lives no matter what. This is an homage to my favourite childhood story because I miss when falling in love seemed as simple as fitting into a glass slipper.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial concept to the finished artwork? How do you ensure that your personal experiences and emotions are authentically reflected in each piece?

I truly am an emotional artist as I create from…well my emotions. That being said I do not really plan my pieces as they are more spontaneous and created in the moment of my emotions from my experiences. I know this because when trying to create some commission pieces I found it extremely difficult to do so because people I believe love my work because I like to think they can feel something when looking at it. I can’t fake emotions nor am I willing to just make a sale.

You work across various mediums, from canvas painting to digital art. How does your choice of medium influence the way you convey the nuances of intimacy, and do you find certain mediums better suited for expressing specific emotions?

I do think choosing to make this a digital painting collection was the right choice to convey my messages of intimacy. Because I drew inspiration from statues and stained glass, line was a huge part of the pieces and images themselves. Had I painted these, they would have been much less uniform and more organic which would’ve evoked a completely different feeling, especially because my style of acrylic painting vs digital painting are significantly different.

When someone experiences your art, what emotional or intellectual impact do you hope it has on them? How do you navigate the fine line between conveying personal experiences and creating a piece that resonates universally?

With this collection in particular, I hope when my viewers experience my work they feel understood or a sense of being able to relate to emotions they may not have even thought they had. I want my audience to question themselves, reflect and feel.

I don’t think there will ever be a piece of art that everyone on this planet can relate to, therefore I think it’s my job as an artist to express my story or message in the best way I know how, and accepting its okay that not everyone will enjoy, appreciate or even understand it but to also remember there will be people who will.

How have your artistic style and approach evolved since your first collection, “Intimacy”? In what ways do you see your art growing and changing in the future?

I think Intimacy was the first “big girl” collection outside of school I have created as my work prior was a bit more whimsical and definitely more niche. My art has matured significantly as I started creating with purpose rather than just for another grade. I see my art changing as I evolve and grow as an individual, and as I have said before I create from my experiences and emotions.

Collaborations and Future Projects: Are there any collaborations or future projects that you’re excited about? How do you see your art evolving, and are there new themes or concepts you’re eager to explore?

I am excited to talk about a food and fashion publication, NABI Magazine, I have started here in NYC that really incorporates a new style of art I have been creating for the brand. My inspiration comes from my childhood love for old animations such as “Aristocats” and “101 Dalmatians” creating a more sketch-like illustration that feels nostalgic for my generation.

Impact of New York City: Being based in New York City, a hub of art and culture, how has the city influenced your artistic journey and the themes you choose to explore in your work?

Living and studying in New York has allowed me to become more expressive and experimental with my art from medium choices to making sure I am creating with something to say. New York being one of the biggest art capitals of the world also has exposed me to so many different artists from historically famous to street art it really is a place of inspiration.

Advice for Emerging Artists: For aspiring artists who want to convey deep emotions and personal experiences through their art, what advice would you offer? How can they find their unique voice and create meaningful connections with their audience?

I have always wanted my art to make my viewer feel something but how can I even do that if I am not even sure what I am trying to say. This was the biggest lesson and push I needed to go from art student to artist. Go out and try to experience everything because without life experience your art can easily fall flat. So as cliche as it sounds go fall in love, get on the wrong train or just step out of your comfort zone once and while and I promise you, your art will come to life!

Balancing Personal and Artistic Identity: Your art delves into personal and intimate themes. How do you balance the line between sharing your personal experiences through art and maintaining a sense of privacy and personal identity?

I really do not think there is ever an exact balance when creating art that is centered around such vulnerable emotions. I think the more vulnerable you are with the process and ultimately the creation of your work the more you will get your audience to feel.

If you hold yourself back by fear, it shows in your work. Privacy and personal identity are all things to keep in mind when explaining your work or writing about it but when creating let yourself feel everything and anything and that is what makes a piece go from good to extraordinary.

Reflection on Past Works: Looking back at your earlier collections, is there a particular piece that holds a special place in your heart or one that represents a pivotal moment in your artistic journey? What memories or emotions does it evoke?

Yes, there is one painting, part of a group art show, that I could have sold for $10,000, but I refused, saying, “I’m not for sale.” Some may see it as a missed opportunity, but to me, it defined my artistic style at the time. It holds a special place as one of the first pieces that shaped my artistic identity, even though my friends might think I’m foolish for not taking the offer.

Legacy and Impact: As an artist, what legacy do you hope to leave behind, and how do you envision your art contributing to conversations about intimacy, vulnerability, and human connection in the broader artistic landscape?

I hope to contribute to normalizing intimacy and vulnerability in both art and society. Through my work, I aim to open conversations that resonate with people’s emotions and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of the human connection.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I would love to go to Asia and tour around my motherland, Korea, but also stop by Japan and Thailand!

What’s your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

I don’t have a go-to quote, but with a little help from tequila, I always end up finding some motivation and inspiration for my next pieces.

Reflecting on your 35-year career in the tourism industry, what pivotal moment or experience inspired you to transition from your role as Sales & Marketing Manager to starting your own independent home-based travel business?

The idea of starting my own business had been brewing for a while, especially after the events of the 2020-2021 pandemic when I was managing my duties from home. The push grew stronger as I approached the 20-year service milestone at my previous workplace, and I knew it was time to take the leap and go it alone.

Having been born in the UK of Greek-Cypriot descent and living in Cyprus for 40 years, how has your dual cultural background influenced the way you curate travel experiences, particularly for destinations in Cyprus and Greece?

I’ve had a very British upbringing, but the Greek culture has always been a part of my life. Moving to Cyprus in my teens was challenging, but over the years, I learned to appreciate and value my roots. The authentic Cyprus and Greece, with their warm people, hospitality, and generosity, make these destinations special. My goal is to guide travelers into the heart of these places, ensuring they experience the true essence of the culture.

Reaching a 20-year milestone at the award-winning Aphrodite Hills Resort is a remarkable achievement. Can you share a specific project or accomplishment during your tenure that you are particularly proud of and that shaped your approach to luxury, tailor-made travel experiences?

Joining Aphrodite Hills Resort during its pre-opening stages and witnessing its growth into an award-winning destination was a defining moment. Creating exclusive, bespoke experiences was ingrained in the culture, and a highlight was hosting the Informal Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in 2012. Coordinating a high-profile event and showcasing Cyprus for such an occasion highlighted the importance of seamless, exceptional experiences.

You’ve mentioned a special connection to Scotland. How has this connection played a role in your travel experiences and, possibly, in how you approach crafting unique itineraries for your clients?

My connection to Scotland, through my daughter Natassa, who lives and works in Glasgow, is significant. She is not only my biggest fan but also my travel buddy. Our joint travels inspire itineraries that cater to both the “mum & daughter” experience, ensuring unique and enjoyable moments. This personal connection enriches my understanding of what makes a trip special for families and influences how I craft tailor-made experiences.

Being the Account Manager for Travel Counsellors worldwide for 9 years must have provided unique insights. What key lessons or perspectives did you gain during this time that you believe set you apart in the travel advisory industry?

Working as a supplier partner to Travel Counsellors taught me the importance of building and strengthening relationships. With around 1300 agents worldwide, I made an effort to be present, available, and build connections with each one. This emphasis on relationships, whether with customers, teams, or supplier partners, has become a cornerstone of my approach to delivering personalised service.

With your extensive travel history within Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, can you share a travel destination that surprised you the most, and how did it influence your perspective on travel?

Dubai was a destination that surprised me the most. Initially thinking it to be superficial, I discovered its depth and the astonishing achievements in the last decades. It showcased the transformative power of visionary planning, putting a once unknown destination on the map for world-class leisure and business travel.

This experience influenced my perspective on the potential of destinations with forward-thinking strategies.

The tagline “with us it’s personal” is powerful. How do you infuse a personal touch into your travel advisory services, ensuring that each client’s experience is truly unique and tailored to their preferences?

The “with us it’s personal” motto is embedded in our community’s everyday lives. I follow a 6-step journey, from arranging personal calls to discussing holiday plans to checking in post-travel. This ensures a personal touch at every stage, from understanding preferences to crafting tailor-made options. It’s about being there for the customer, 24/7, and ensuring their journey is seamless and exceptional.

It doesn’t get any more personal than this!

Starting your own independent travel business is an exciting venture. What aspect of being an entrepreneur in the travel industry has brought you the most joy and fulfillment?

Starting my own venture has been fulfilling, especially the freedom to work on my terms and be my own boss. While I loved my previous roles, the ability to determine how I market, spend, and invest my time brings immense satisfaction. Doing things my way allows me to tailor services based on years of industry experience.

In your role as a Travel Counsellor, you have access to thousands of suppliers and cutting-edge technology. Can you share a specific instance where this technology played a crucial role in creating a seamless and extraordinary travel experience for a client?

Our cutting-edge tools enable us to build unique itineraries, and one notable instance was curating a honeymoon trip to Crete. Despite pre-modeled options available online, the clients desired a bespoke experience. Our technology allowed us to create a personalized itinerary, exceeding their expectations and adding a touch of magic to their journey.

As someone deeply familiar with the Mediterranean region, what hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path locations in Cyprus or Greece do you recommend for travelers seeking authentic and unique experiences?

For authentic experiences, I recommend exploring hidden villages, wine routes, and vineyard experiences in Cyprus. In Greece, a road trip through lesser-known destinations like Trikala, Kalambaka, and Igoumenitsa provides unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Discovering local culture, monasteries, and indigenous flora and fauna ensures an immersive journey.

Your commitment to customer care is evident. How do you ensure that the travel experiences you curate not only meet but exceed your clients’ expectations, leaving them with lasting memories?

Exceeding expectations involves going the extra mile, taking care of every detail, and ensuring a seamless journey. From arranging personal calls to post-travel check-ins, my focus is on meticulous planning, continuous communication, and addressing details before guests arrive. It’s about providing peace of mind, allowing clients to relax and savor every moment of their journey.

Working from home provides flexibility. Can you share an anecdote about a time when your ability to accommodate clients’ schedules, regardless of time zones, resulted in a particularly positive and memorable interaction?

Working in Cyprus with a time zone advantage, I utilize the early hours for preparation, ensuring everything is in place before communicating with clients in the UK. This approach allows me to be available 24/7 without disrupting clients’ schedules. During calls, I refrain from mentioning the time difference, ensuring a seamless and positive interaction without letting the two-hour gap dictate my services.

With your background in Guest Services, Reservations, Executive Assistant, Marketing, Communications, and Sales, how have these diverse roles shaped your approach to creating comprehensive and well-rounded travel experiences for your clients?

My diverse roles in the hotel industry, from selling and marketing to executive team responsibilities, shaped my perception of the customer’s journey. Experiencing each stage, from pre-arrival planning to in-resort satisfaction, emphasized the importance of fine-tuning details. This background guides my approach, ensuring comprehensive and well-rounded travel experiences for clients.

Having traveled for both leisure and business, can you recall a specific travel moment that left a lasting impact on you and made you appreciate the transformative power of travel?

The events of 2020 highlighted the vulnerability of the travel industry, but it also showcased the importance of having a trusted travel agent. While facing global challenges, the ability to provide financial protection and flexibility became paramount. Through Travel Counsellors, clients experienced the assurance of 100% financial protection, fostering trust and confidence in our services. Whether it’s a global crisis or routine travel, this commitment contributes to building a strong foundation of trust.

With your extensive travel history within Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, can you share a travel destination that surprised you the most and how did it influence your perspective on travel?

Dubai was a destination that surprised me the most. Initially thinking it to be superficial, I discovered its depth and the astonishing achievements in the last decades. It showcased the transformative power of visionary planning, putting a once unknown destination on the map for world-class leisure and business travel. This experience influenced my perspective on the potential of destinations with forward-thinking strategies.

You’ve mentioned offering holiday itineraries for various purposes, from family holidays to corporate groups. Can you share a unique and challenging request you successfully fulfilled, showcasing your ability to tailor experiences for diverse clientele?

Although all our itineraries are built on uniqueness and based on our customers’ travel aspirations, a particularly challenging request involved organizing an Indian Wedding Group in Cyprus. This extravagant affair spanned three full days with numerous ceremonies, rituals, and events, attended by family members from across the globe.

Coordinating logistics, including accommodation, transfers, catering, and inter-departmental coordination, was an enormous feat. The ultimate gratitude and thanks from the bride, groom, parents, and guests validated the accomplishment, despite the worries and anxieties along the way.

In your opinion, what trends or shifts do you foresee in the travel industry, and how are you adapting your services to meet the evolving needs and preferences of modern travelers?

Undoubtedly, everyone needs something to look forward to, especially at the beginning of a new year. Travel is often the most exciting prospect, and as the industry rebounds, we observe shifts in trends and preferences. Modern consumers are seeking more from their travel experiences, desiring frequent getaways when financially feasible.

Our Travel Tracker Report in October 2023, derived from a sample of the general public, indicated that 45% prioritized holidays as their top spending for the upcoming year. Additionally, a trend toward long-haul destinations such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and the Far East, as well as traditional European hotspots like Italy and Greece, is evident. Multi-center and multi-type holidays, combining different destinations or vacation styles in one trip, are gaining popularity.

At Travel Counsellors, we consistently study trends, follow demands, and specialize in crafting tailored itineraries. Responsible travel is a top priority, and for 2024, we’ve expanded our sustainable travel options, partnering with providers to help customers reduce their carbon footprint, support communities, and protect ecosystems.

As someone with a deep connection to Cyprus, what cultural or local elements do you ensure are incorporated into the travel experiences you curate, providing an authentic sense of the destination to your clients?

Immersing travelers in the heart of Cyprus is key to offering an authentic experience beyond the typical Sun, Sand, and Sea promotions. Cyprus, a four-season island with diverse offerings, boasts a rich history influenced by various conquerors. In curating travel experiences, I emphasize hidden gems like authentic villages, wine routes, nature paths, sporting opportunities, and historical/cultural routes. Encountering locals producing traditional goods ensures visitors experience the genuine and authentic side of Cyprus.

Looking ahead, what aspirations and goals do you have for Travel Perfect by Maria, and how do you envision continuing to make a positive impact in the travel industry?

In 2024, my goal is to establish Travel Perfect by Maria, gradually growing the business through referrals and word-of-mouth. My commitment is to prioritize customer peace of mind and satisfaction. Leveraging my extensive travel experience, I aim to be there for customers every step of their journey, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable holiday experience.

Within the year, I plan to incorporate business travel as an additional offering, utilizing our Sustainable travel portfolio to positively impact the industry. Learning about new destinations, staying updated on travel trends, and gathering feedback from customers and colleagues are focal points for 2024, enhancing knowledge and service delivery.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Africa, specifically going on safari in locations like Tanzania and Kenya, is at the top of my bucket list. It’s a dream to embark on a 10+ day journey from Nairobi to the Serengeti, camping in different locations along the way. The experience promises not only adventure but also an opportunity for my husband and me to enjoy the beauty of these locations.

When lacking motivation, what’s your go-to quote?

My go-to quote, inspired by my kids, is “So Worthy of Your Dreams.” Over the years, as a mom and cheerleader for everyone else, I often forgot to remind myself of the same. Now is the time to tell myself that I am also “Worthy of My Dreams.” This will be my mantra moving forward, empowering myself to pursue my aspirations.
