What inspired you to create Hand of Fatima, and how does it reflect your personal journey and aspirations?

From a young age, I have struggled with health complications, particularly related to my gut. Despite numerous diagnoses and treatments, nothing seemed to provide significant relief. As a result, I learned to live with these challenges, integrating them into my daily life. However, eight years ago, I underwent a complex surgery that completely changed my diet, lifestyle, and relationship with food. During my recovery, I decided to take a break and explore the sunny Greek islands. Little did I know that this trip would be transformative and lead me to where I am today.

Throughout my time in Greece, I gradually began feeling better, experiencing improved energy levels and overall happiness. It was during this journey that I discovered the Mediterranean diet, particularly the central role of olive oil, which significantly contributed to my well-being. This realisation sparked my five-year journey to create something meaningful. I wanted to develop a product that would not only reflect my identity, background, and story but also be a testament to who I aspire to become.

Could you share some insights into the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences that shape the essence of Hand of Fatima?

Growing up, my family emphasized the importance of community, a value that was instilled in me through my mother’s guidance. My grandmother and mother always brought our family together, especially during meal times. I have fond memories of gatherings with around 15 people, filled with delicious food, laughter, and love. This sense of community is deeply ingrained in my upbringing.

During my research in Greece, I noticed that Mediterranean communities share a similar principle, valuing family and collective bonds. Through my interactions with locals, I made a dear friend named Irini. Our relationship grew to the point where she became like family to me. This reinforced the significance of community in Mediterranean cultures.

The Hand of Fatima symbol holds great importance in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, representing good fortune, blessings, protection, and good health. This symbol is commonly found in homes, including baby cribs, main rooms, kitchens, and doorways. When deciding on a name for my brand, I received a gift from a hotel owner in Crete—a silver necklace featuring the Hand of Fatima symbol. Inspired by this gesture and wanting to make my mother proud, I chose to name the brand after the symbol, which interestingly is my given name.

The blue, white, and brown shades of our bottles pay homage to Greece and the Venetian and Ottoman influences on Crete. Additionally, the geometric pattern of the symbol represents my proud Middle Eastern heritage.

How has your family and their support played a role in shaping Hand of Fatima?

My family, especially my mother, has been a significant influence on my journey as an entrepreneur. As the eldest of five children, I grew up admiring my mother’s strength and ability to balance work, raising children, and caring for her family—all while being beloved and admired by everyone she encountered. As I matured, I recognized her unwavering faith, her radiant smile, and her determination to overcome any challenge with the motto “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” My parents’ support and guidance have been instrumental in shaping who I am today.

Now, as a mother myself, my two-year-old son is my driving force and motivation. His love guides every decision I make, and I cannot imagine navigating this project without him at the center of everything I do.

Can you share some stories or experiences from your travels to Crete that have influenced your brand’s development?

My experiences living among the locals in Crete provided me with valuable insights into the Mediterranean lifestyle beyond just its culinary aspects. I learned that the Mediterranean Diet isn’t merely about the food but encompasses the entire way of life.

The locals practice sustainability by walking whenever possible and cherishing their food, aiming not to waste any part of it but instead sharing it generously. Additionally, their passion and pride in olive oil production left a profound impact on me. Olive oil is deeply rooted in Cretan cuisine, becoming a tradition that is proudly passed down through generations.

Can you describe the process of creating a new product for Hand of Fatima, from concept to final production?

The process of creating a new product for Hand of Fatima begins with testing the olive oil for its taste and acidity level. We send the samples to a lab to check the percentage and grade levels. For infused flavors, we carefully select high-quality ingredients from local suppliers, avoiding the use of artificial essences. Our goal is to strike the perfect balance where the flavours complement the olive oil without overpowering it or vice versa.

We conduct multiple trials to refine the product, and after a few weeks of letting it sit, we perform a final evaluation. Only when we achieve perfection do we move forward with production. Our brand ethos is “produced with care, sealed with pride, and dealt with love,” and we hold ourselves to these values throughout the product development process.

What challenges have you faced as a founder, and how have you overcome them while building Hand of Fatima?

As a founder, I have encountered various challenges, but perhaps the most significant has been related to trade and logistics, particularly post-Brexit. The changes in timeframe, paperwork, taxes, and prices for goods coming from or going to the EU have posed considerable difficulties. Elements such as fuel surcharge, duties and taxes, and ingredient sourcing have become more complex.

To overcome these challenges, I have focused on streamlining processes while adhering to all legal requirements. It has been essential to stay informed and be patient, allowing the business to adapt to the changing landscape while maintaining our commitment to quality and sustainability.

Are there any exciting new projects or collaborations in the pipeline for Hand of Fatima that you can share with us?

Yes, we have an exciting new project in the pipeline that is currently in the final stages of development. While I can’t disclose all the details, I can say that it will appeal to markets such as hospitality, leisure, travel, and events. Additionally, we are preparing to launch a new infused flavor that I am particularly enthusiastic about.

How do you envision Hand of Fatima contributing to the future of the food industry and promoting sustainable practices?

At Hand of Fatima, we are committed to leading by example in the food industry by promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness. Our dedication to using sustainable and recyclable packaging sets a precedent for other businesses to follow suit. Moreover, we allocate a portion of our annual profits to support local farmers, helping to sustain their lands and livelihoods. We hope to inspire other companies to do the same, supporting environmental charities and low-wage laborers who contribute to the food industry.

Our readers love to travel; what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

While there are many places I would love to explore, Japan has always been at the top of my bucket list for many years. The unique blend of historical traditions intertwined with modern life intrigues me. Their discipline, dedication, and culinary artistry are inspiring, and I am drawn to the beauty of their gardens, shrines, and historical towns, which exude a sense of zen.

Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own ventures in the food industry?

If you are passionate about creating a business in the food industry, I encourage you to dive in headfirst and pursue your dream with unwavering determination. Expect criticism and challenges along the way, but don’t let them deter you. Your confidence will be your greatest asset and capital. Stay focused, be patient, and allow your venture to come together organically. Isabella, as the founder of SATYA ÈN RO LONDON, could you share with us the story behind the brand and what inspired you to create sustainable and functional handbags?

I would be delighted to share the story behind our innovative handbags with changeable inner liners and shed light on the inspiration that fueled their creation! My favourite story!

My passion for design and fashion has been a lifelong affair, but it was during my years of exploration and introspection that I realized the pressing need for sustainability in the industry. Witnessing the adverse environmental impact caused by fast fashion and disposable accessories left me deeply concerned. I felt compelled to contribute to a more conscious and responsible approach to fashion.

As I delved deeper into the world of sustainable fashion, I discovered the transformative power of versatility and functionality. It became evident that designing accessories with adaptable features could not only enhance practicality but also minimise waste. And thus, the concept of handbags with changeable inner liners was born.

Women, like myself, lead dynamic lives and embrace various roles throughout the day. We require accessories that effortlessly adapt to our needs and seamlessly complement our diverse styles. By creating handbags with changeable inner liners, SATYA ÈN RO LONDON aims to empower women with the freedom to customize their bags according to their unique personalities, moods, and occasions.

Moreover, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond aesthetics. We strive to reduce the carbon footprint of our products and minimize waste in every possible way. Each design is a testament to our dedication to ethical sourcing and responsible manufacturing practices. We love the concept of removable and washable inner liners in your handbags. How did you come up with this innovative idea, and what makes it a game-changer in the world of fashion?

Picture this: I was once a makeup enthusiast who, like many others, had experienced the horror of makeup spills ruining a beloved handbag. I vividly remember the frustration of desperately trying to wash the liner, only to discover that it was stubbornly sewed in, taunting me with its immovable presence.

As I lamented the tragedy and contemplated the hefty quote of £167 to change the liner professionally, a light bulb moment struck me like a flash of glittery eyeshadow. Why not create handbags with changeable liners? It seemed like such a simple solution to a problem that countless fashionistas face.

And so, the idea was born – the concept of handbags with removable and washable inner liners. We set out on a mission to combine functionality and practicality with impeccable style. Our goal was to empower individuals like yourself to embrace life’s little accidents without sacrificing your hard-earned designer investments.

Not only do these removable and washable liners allow you to quickly and easily clean up after makeup spills, but they also open up a whole world of possibilities in terms of organization and personalization. Imagine being able to switch up your bag’s interior to match your mood or outfit effortlessly. It’s like having a brand new bag every time you change the liner!

But here’s the real kicker: our innovative approach isn’t just about convenience and style. It’s also a nod to sustainability. By offering removable and washable inner liners, we significantly reduce the need for frequent bag replacements. You can enjoy the luxury and durability of your designer handbag for years, while minimizing your impact on the environment. It’s a win-win situation!

A bag with changeable liners is an essential accessory for dog owners who love to travel with their canine companions. It offers the perfect solution to the common challenges faced during dog walks and trips. Treat mishaps, which can easily ruin a regular bag, are no longer a worry with the ability to replace liners. Additionally, these bags effortlessly blend style and functionality, ensuring you look chic while tending to your dog’s needs. The convenience of changeable liners eliminates the need for multiple bags, providing a versatile option for every outing. With customized liners for different purposes, such as organizing dog-related essentials, you can stay well-prepared and organised at all times. Ultimately, a bag with changeable liners is a game-changer for dog owners, offering both practicality and style in one compact package.

We strive to create handbags that are not only practical but also environmentally conscious. To achieve this, we carefully select materials that prioritise sustainability and minimize our impact on the planet.

One of the primary materials we utilize is real recycled leather. That’s why we have sought out innovative methods to repurpose and upcycle discarded leather scraps and remnants. By using real recycled leather, we not only reduce waste but also give new life to existing resources, minimizing the need for additional raw materials.

In addition to recycled leather, we also incorporate other eco-friendly materials into our handbags. We source fabrics made from recycled fibers, such as recycled polyester and organic cotton. These materials are produced using processes that require less water and energy compared to conventional production methods. By choosing eco-friendly materials, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and support a more sustainable fashion industry.

Furthermore, we embrace the principles of zero waste design. Our skilled artisans meticulously plan patterns and utilize innovative cutting techniques to maximize material efficiency. This approach ensures that we make the most out of every piece of fabric, minimizing waste during the manufacturing process. Your brand’s tagline, “Because even Queens spill their coffee,” is intriguing. Could you share a memorable anecdote or story that inspired this statement and its connection to your handbags?

Oh, it should really be, “Because even Queens spill their Double Wear foundation.” You see, I was working as a makeup artist at the time, fully immersed in the world of beauty and glamour, so I should have known better. Just a few days after purchasing my brand-new handbag, disaster struck. In a moment of sheer irony, I managed to spill my trusty Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation all over my beloved brand new designer handbag.

Now, you can imagine how I felt. This incident fueled my determination to create something unique and practical. I realized that there was a need for handbags that not only complemented the world of beauty but also embraced the realities of everyday busy women. Our tagline, “Because even Queens spill their coffee,” became a light-hearted acknowledgment of those moments when even the most skilled among us can encounter mishaps.

We crafted handbags with removable inner liners, catering to the needs of all women and men too. These inner liners offer both functionality and style, so you can effortlessly switch them out if an unexpected spill occurs. We want to empower you to face those makeup mishaps with a sense of humor.

We strive to minimize waste during the production process by implementing efficient cutting techniques and utilizing every inch of material. This way, we reduce our environmental footprint and promote a more circular economy.

Of course, the journey towards sustainable fashion comes with its own set of challenges. One of the main hurdles we’ve encountered is sourcing materials that align with our sustainability goals without compromising on quality and durability. It has taken extensive research, collaboration with suppliers, and constant innovation to find the right balance. As a small business, we make sure that whatever collection we launch is aligned with our values. There have been instances in the past where we had to delay a new collection due to supplier problems.

Spreading awareness and educating consumers about the importance of sustainable fashion has been an ongoing challenge. We strive to not only create beautiful products but also to communicate the value of conscious consumption and the positive impact it has on our planet.

Despite these challenges, we remain dedicated to our mission. We see sustainability as an ongoing journey of improvement and innovation, and we constantly seek new ways to enhance our practices and contribute to a more eco-friendly fashion industry.

Our handbags have truly made a significant difference in the lives of women. Imagine the scenario: a spill occurs inside your cherished bag, causing instant worry. However, with the revolutionary feature of changeable liners, the problem is easily solved. Instead of enduring permanent damage, she can effortlessly swap out the liner and restore the bag’s pristine condition. It’s a relief to know that accidents don’t have to leave a lasting mark.

Yet, the impact extends far beyond spills. The versatility of these changeable liners has brought a new level of organisation and convenience to women’s lives. By simply changing the liner, one can tailor the bag’s interior to suit different days, activities, or even match their mood. Most customers get three liners: one for work, another for gym stuff, and a third one for day-to-day use. It’s like having a customised bag for every occasion, making life more seamless and stylish.

Additionally, our gym and travel bags have become popular with men. They appreciate the fact that they can take out their sweaty gym clothes along with the liner and put it in the washing machine. The bag stays fresh and clean, ready to be used for other activities like travel, for example.

But it doesn’t end there. Changing the liner breathes new life into the bag’s aesthetic. With a fresh liner, the bag is instantly transformed, exuding beauty and radiating a renewed sense of allure. Not only does this elevate personal style, but it also adds value to the bag itself. The ability to resell or pass on a bag with a new liner not only reduces waste but also allows others to enjoy its timeless appeal.

Join us as we unravel the vibrant tapestry of Nina Kane Jewellery, a testament to the power of passion and the relentless pursuit of dreams…

What inspired you to start Nina Kane? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked the idea?

I have always wanted to start a business, and my love for jewellery has never left me, so it just made sense that the business I would go into would have something to do with what I love most. The idea came to me fully during COVID, but as a single parent, I had to first save up to be able to buy the stock for the business as well as figure out social media and get my website up and running. Not to mention the years of research for the best suppliers I could find so that I could bring my customers the very best quality and designs from around the world.

How would you describe the essence of Nina Kane in three words?

Bespoke, Waterproof, and Non-Tarnish.

The Nina Kane brand is known for its unique and artistic designs. Can you tell us about your creative process and where you draw inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from a lot of different sources. I love unique designs, especially pieces that have a deeper meaning, which is why I really wanted to incorporate a spiritual collection of some sort. Our Tarot & Horoscope Collection is truly one of my favourites, with our Angel Number Necklaces and Protection Pendants.

As the founder, what challenges did you face in establishing Nina Kane, and how did you overcome them?

There are so many challenges to overcome when starting a business, especially when you are doing it on your own while raising a family. I think my biggest challenge was raising the capital to be able to start the business, as well as finding the right people to work with and the correct manufacturers for my stock. In the beginning, it was very much trial and error, but I’ve gotten better with practice, and I am proud to say I now have a strong team of great manufacturers and jewellery suppliers with me.

Nina Kane emphasises sustainability and ethical practices. How do you ensure these principles are reflected in every aspect of your brand?

When starting the brand, I considered many steps to ensure Nina Kane jewellery would be exemplary in every way and an industry leader when it came to sustainability. I delved deep into my manufacturers’ practices and made sure to explore and question every step of the process, from sustainable materials and Fair Trade practices to artisan support, supply chain transparency, certifications, and environmental impact. When all of these points were met and the quality was at a level I wanted, I knew I was on the right track.

Collaboration seems to be an important aspect of Nina Kane. Could you talk about any notable collaborations you’ve had and how they have impacted your brand?

In an effort to promote our business, we have approached a few influencers on Instagram and TikTok so that they could honestly review our products, and we have had amazing feedback from every one, which I am so proud of.

The fashion industry can be highly competitive. How does Nina Kane stand out from other jewellery brands, and what do you believe sets it apart?

I believe what sets us apart is our unparalleled customer service and experience, as well as the value for money all our customers enjoy with our products. We really want to build a community of jewellery lovers with Nina Kane, and we want all of our customers to feel special the moment they open our packages. Also worth noting, we found that even many mid-range jewellery brands were still quite expensive for what they were offering, and in this declining financial market, we wanted to provide a product that was truly affordable yet still of excellent quality, which is why you will not find a product in our store above £50.

Social media has played a significant role in shaping the fashion industry. How has it influenced Nina Kane’s growth and brand identity?

Social Media has truly helped us launch the brand and put our products in front of so many people that we may otherwise not have reached. We love hearing from our customers through social media, especially when they tag us wearing their pieces, and this has definitely helped promote the brand and show others how fantastic our jewellery pieces truly are.

Are there any exciting upcoming projects or collaborations that we can look forward to from Nina Kane?

We are currently working on something with a fantastic TikTok superstar, but we cannot divulge anything more at the moment.

The fashion industry is constantly evolving. How do you ensure that Nina Kane stays relevant and adaptable to changing trends and customer preferences?

We have our finger on the pulse, and I am always researching new trends within the fashion and jewellery world. We do have a slightly different aesthetic from most jewellery brands, as we want to offer our customers designs that they wouldn’t easily find in other stores. So we really listen to our customers and their feedback, as well as spotting early trends on social media and in the fashion world.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is on your bucket list?

I have recently become obsessed with Zanzibar. The beaches are straight out of a movie, and I would love to take my little boy on Safari there one day. The other places on my bucket list are Cuba and Japan. I have been to Tokyo only, but there is so much more to explore that I cannot wait for the day I can go back.

Lastly, if you could give one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own fashion brand, what would it be?

My advice would be to fully do your research. I cannot stress enough how important it is to know as much as you possibly can about the industry or business you are looking to pursue. Do not take things at face value, and fact-check every piece of information. If something does not feel right, don’t do it. Follow your intuition. And most of all, have faith in yourself and your vision, even when others try to dismiss it or put you down. You are capable of everything you think you are and more.

Get ready to be captivated by Beate’s compelling vision as she shares her dreams and aspirations for a more sustainable and harmonious world.

Tell us about the journey that led you to launch your brand, BORGANB. Being eco-friendly is at the forefront of what you do. Why was this important to you?

As human beings, everything we do must be in harmony with natural cycles because we are an integral part of them. However, over the years, especially since the era of enlightenment and industrialisation, we have lost our natural connection to the environment. Science and logic became the dominant systems of understanding, and this led to a detachment from nature.

Ignoring our impact on the environment is not sustainable, and it poses a significant threat to life on Earth. During my studies of economics and business in Germany, I delved into the concept of ecological accounting, researching the external impact of production on the environment and exploring ways to integrate these impacts into traditional accounting systems. I strongly believed that natural resources like air, water, and soil should not be treated as ‘free goods,’ and polluters should bear the cost of their actions. This, in turn, would influence supply and demand and reward eco-friendly companies, making them more attractive to investors.

Throughout my journey, I have been drawn to ventures that align with my environmental values. I worked for a solar energy business in Cologne during the 1990s when renewable energy was considered quite unconventional. Later, I spent over 20 years in development finance and investment in Africa, gaining valuable insights into company dynamics and observing both successful and unsuccessful businesses operating in challenging circumstances.

It was during this time, after watching David Attenborough’s series on ocean plastic pollution, that I decided to explore innovative organic materials made from waste and create plastic-free products. In 2020, I launched BORGANB in Cologne, despite being based in London, to take advantage of the cost-efficiency and proximity to organic material suppliers and manufacturers in the EU.

Through BORGANB, my mission is to demonstrate that beauty can coexist with eco-friendliness. I have encountered numerous inspiring individuals and companies working on innovative materials made from plants or organic waste. By utilising these materials, we aim to show that we can create beautiful products without harming the environment.

How do you want women to feel when they wear your products?

I hope that anyone wearing a BORGANB bag feels not only the joy of owning a beautiful piece but also the satisfaction of making an important statement about connecting with nature. BORGANB represents the epitome of eco-fashion, showcasing how we can use environmentally appropriate materials and avoid harmful plastic. Our products are not only good for humans but also contribute positively to the well-being of all living creatures and environmental systems.

What’s the process behind launching a new design, and who is involved in the process?

The journey of BORGANB began with our first production line, which featured fish and rhubarb-tanned leather bags. This came to fruition after I discovered the extraordinary fish leather from Nova Kaeru, a Brazilian company, during the Future Fabrics Expo by Sustainable Angle in London four years ago. Intrigued by the material and its story, I envisioned a bag that would showcase its beauty to a wider audience.

To create this design, I collaborated with Ruth Glen, a talented bag designer based in London. The focus was on minimising waste and allowing the material’s natural beauty to speak for itself. It was also essential to ensure that the production process remained free of plastic, even in the yarn used. To achieve this, we partnered with suppliers and manufacturers who followed fair and ethical labor practices. We insisted on sourcing and manufacturing everything in Europe, despite the higher costs, to maintain ethical control and minimise negative environmental impacts.

Absolutely! I intend to continue improving and diversifying our current range of products, exploring different colours and sizes. Beyond that, my vision for the next chapter of our journey involves using innovative plant-based organic waste materials to create skin-friendly bio-clothes, collaborating once again with a talented designer.

If you didn’t pursue this career, what else would you have liked to do?

Before embarking on my current path, I have had two other fulfilling careers, each providing valuable experiences that I can now bring to bear on issues I’m passionate about. My goal has always been to combine creativity with business and environmental objectives. Engaging in new and interesting ideas that align with nature excites me at this stage of my career, and I believe that together, we can make a difference by leveraging everyone’s unique talents.

Tell us about an average day in your life….

My days are varied and depend on the focus at hand. Some days are dedicated to brainstorming new ideas for products, designs, and branding, fostering creativity. On other days, I attend to the usual administrative tasks, communication, and planning required to run the business efficiently. Striking a balance between managing my household (including taking care of my pet Rhodesian Ridgeback), maintaining personal health, and running my business is essential.

When you look back at the time since you started your business, is there anything you would do differently?

Looking back, I realise that starting BORGANB with a like-minded business partner might have made the initial journey a little smoother. However, it is never too late to consider such a partnership, and I remain open to the possibility.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your wish list?

Brazil has been on the top of my wish list for a while now. I have never been there, and the allure of the language, culture, and people fascinates me. I am particularly keen on visiting Nova Kaeru, our partners in Brazil, who produce the organic fish leather for BORGANB. Additionally, I intend to find a local charity supporting indigenous people with whom BORGANB can collaborate, using a portion of our profits for social, cultural, and environmental investments.

Currently, BORGANB supports Native Hope, an indigenous North American organisation in South Dakota, USA, focused on preserving their culture and wisdom. I would love to revisit them as well.

Where do you call home?

Home is wherever I feel comfortable, surrounded by family and friends. Usually, that means Richmond, London, as well as Cologne, Germany, and the South of France.

Running a business can be very stressful. What do you do to wind down?

To unwind and destress, I turn to meditation, immerse myself in nature, and enjoy swimming, preferably in the sea.

What is your favourite quote when you lack motivation?

“Dream your life beautifully and make your reality out of these dreams” (Marie Curie).

Lack of motivation is a part of life, and I believe in accepting it when it arises. When I face such moments, I turn to meditation to introspect and find the inspiration to move forward.

In five years from now, where do you see the brand?

In five years, I envision BORGANB at Chapter Five of its history. Our journey will have brought forth a wider range of new products, showcasing how innovative materials can be used in fashion. Our mission is to grow organically and sustainably, reaching more customers who identify with our brand and increasing our turnover. By that time, I hope to have investors who believe in our mission and will support the financial sustainability of our business approach.

Wedding Photography of Kristy Visscher

How did you develop your passion for fine art and wedding photography, and what drew you to this particular genre?

I discovered my passion for photography in my mid-20s while living on Bondi Beach. Capturing the beautiful coastal sunrises sparked my interest, and it grew over time as I began photographing families and births during my own maternity leave from a corporate job. After shooting my first wedding, I knew I would never go back to the corporate world. Despite the challenges of managing a business with two young babies, I was determined to pursue my true passion.

In the early days of my photography journey, I focused on capturing births and families. I was deeply inspired by low-light situations and sought to create images that authentically portrayed the connections between people in love. As time went on, weddings became my primary focus. These remarkable occasions encompassed dreamy aesthetics, heartfelt moments of connection, meticulous planning, and abundant joy. I’ve always had a profound appreciation for timeless, elegant black-and-white imagery, and my couples and their unique stories during their wedding day continue to inspire me.

What sets Kinship by Kristy apart from other wedding photographers, and how do you ensure a unique and personalised experience for each couple?

The distinguishing factor for any photography business lies in the person behind the camera. Each photographer is unique, as we all perceive the world differently. This inherent individuality guarantees a distinct and personalised experience for my couples. To create this personalised experience, I make it a point to learn about my couples before their special day. By understanding what they value most in their wedding imagery, I tailor their final gallery to match their expectations.

How do you approach capturing the emotional moments and candid interactions during weddings to create timeless and authentic photographs?

My approach is warm and gentle. I believe that beauty resides in honesty, and the most genuine and beautiful moments occur when people are undisturbed. While my work has an editorial edge, the majority of a wedding day is captured in a documentary style, as it naturally unfolds.

During portrait sessions, I may incorporate a glass of bubbles, a prop, or a few conversation starters to encourage intimate moments. I request that my couples avoid looking directly at the camera, and I aim to infuse movement into my galleries. If my couples feel uncomfortable, we may take a walk, as natural movement helps people feel at ease and look and feel more like themselves.

Can you describe your photography style in three words?

Ethereal, Editorial, and Bespoke.

In what ways do you incorporate natural light and the surrounding environment into your photography to create a sense of intimacy and connection?

Light is the cornerstone of my work. It sets the atmosphere, mood, romance, and allure of each image. When shooting a scene, the first thing I consider is the lighting as it shapes the overall ambiance of the entire gallery. I am deeply guided by the interplay of light and the environment, determining where and how I shoot.

What steps do you take to ensure a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for couples during their wedding photoshoots?

Creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere begins from our first meeting. Building rapport and trust with my clients before their wedding day is of utmost importance to me. This foundation allows me to capture real and honest interactions throughout the day, starting from the morning preparations. To establish this connection, I have Zoom meetings, and phone chats, and often conduct a location scout with my clients. Pre-wedding shoots are also a great way to get to know each other better, and they help anxious couples relax on their big day.

On the wedding day itself, I adjust my energy to match that of the couple. If they are goofy and playful, I join them. If they are quiet and nervous, I adopt a calming and reassuring presence. It’s essential to read the room and adapt accordingly.

How do you work with couples to understand their vision and preferences, and how do you incorporate their input into the creative process?

It’s crucial for all vendors involved in a wedding to align with the couple’s vision and preferences. I take the time to learn about my couples, their dream day, and what matters most to them before they book my services. Ensuring our styles and visions are aligned prior to booking is a priority. I encourage my couples to explore my social media, website, and portfolio, and I share complete galleries to give them a sense of the final product.

Once they have booked, we discuss their favourite photos of mine and the images they value the most. I then tailor their final gallery to ensure it reflects our earlier discussions.

What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer and seeking to capture the essence of their special day?

Research, research, research! Find photographers whose work you adore and follow their social media accounts, browse their websites, and read their blogs. Falling in love with a photographer’s work is paramount. Keep in mind that photographers have distinct styles, so it’s crucial to align your preferences with their artistic approach before reaching out.

Could you share some insights into the post-production process, including how you edit and enhance photographs to bring out their full artistic potential?

After importing all the images into Narrative Select for backup, I select around 2,000 files and import them into Lightroom. I then edit the chosen images, make a few adjustments in Photoshop, and export around 100 pictures into Pic-time for my clients’ preview collection. This selection represents their entire day, beautifully telling their story. I provide this preview within three days. Subsequently, I edit and deliver 500-900 images in a meticulously arranged Pic-time gallery, which is typically ready for delivery within 5-10 weeks after the wedding day.

Can you describe a specific project or collaboration that challenged you creatively and resulted in stunning and unexpected photographs?

In the early stages of my wedding photography career, a local bridal designer invited me to collaborate on a shoot featuring her bridal gowns. She specifically requested super low-light, moody imagery. This collaboration allowed me to push my creative boundaries with light while capturing images in an editorial style for her brand. Collaborations like these provide incredible opportunities to explore new ideas, network, and challenge oneself creatively and professionally. I strive to engage in at least two collaborations each year during quieter months. This particular shoot ignited my passion for photographing bridal fashion.

Looking back since starting your brand, is there anything you would do differently?

In retrospect, I wish I had discovered my passion for photography and left my corporate job earlier, a few years before having children. However, it was becoming a mother that led me to photography and motivated me to leave my previous role. So, I am grateful to my children for giving me that extra push.

What advice would you offer to aspiring photographers?

Be yourself and avoid comparing yourself to others. Your unique perspective and way of processing the world are your superpowers. Seek workshops and education from artists who inspire you. Take risks and embrace the possibility of failure. Sometimes, the best way to learn and grow is by diving headfirst into the deep end.

Our readers love to travel. Where do you call home, and what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I call Gippsland, a regional area in Victoria, Australia, my home. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive east of Melbourne. As for my bucket list destination, I would love to take my children to Europe, with Italy being our first stop.

How did your mother’s work as a dressmaker inspire and influence your passion for fashion design?

My mother’s work as a dressmaker truly ignited my passion for fashion design. Witnessing the magical transformation of a simple piece of fabric into a beautiful dress and seeing the joy on a woman’s face as she slipped into it deeply inspired me. I yearned to create that same sense of wonder and confidence. My mother’s craftsmanship and artistry served as a constant reminder of the power of fashion to uplift and transform. It was her influence that ultimately guided me toward pursuing a career in this creative field.

What made you decide to pursue a career in fashion design despite lacking formal training?

My journey into the world of fashion design started organically. Initially, I began creating tops and skirts for my cousins without any formal training. As word spread, requests poured in from friends and neighbors, and I discovered my immense passion for crafting garments that empower and enhance women. Realizing my deep love for this art form, I made the decision to further hone my skills by studying Fashion Design at the Art Institute of California, San Francisco, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree.

While I may have lacked formal training at the beginning, my dedication and determination allowed me to transcend any limitations and embark on an incredible career in fashion design.

Could you share your experience of participating in the STITCHED series and winning Episode 5? How did that impact your career?

Participating in the STITCHED series and emerging as the winner of Episode 5 was an incredible experience that significantly impacted my career. The exposure I gained as a designer through the show’s airing in Canada, Central, and South America provided invaluable visibility and recognition. The outpouring of congratulations and support from viewers was truly heartwarming. As a finalist on PROJECT RUNWAY S19, what valuable lessons or experiences did you gain from the show?

Being a finalist on PROJECT RUNWAY was a transformative experience, filled with valuable lessons that continue to resonate with me. One of the most significant lessons I learned was the power of color. Prior to the show, I predominantly worked with black, but PROJECT RUNWAY pushed me to explore and embrace a broader spectrum of hues without compromising my unique aesthetic. It allowed me to incorporate vibrant colors into my designs while retaining a sense of strength and identity. The show also sharpened my ability to work under pressure, think creatively within tight deadlines, and collaborate effectively with fellow designers. These invaluable experiences shaped me both as a designer and as an individual, propelling me towards even greater artistic endeavors.

Your designs are known for combining strength and softness. How do you achieve this delicate balance in your pieces?

Achieving the delicate balance between strength and softness is at the core of my design philosophy. I accomplish this fusion through a meticulous interplay of structure and flow. By incorporating elements like architectural draping and precisely constructed forms, I create garments that accentuate the female figure and evoke a sense of strength and confidence.

Simultaneously, I infuse soft and ethereal fabrics such as chiffon, which lend a touch of delicacy and femininity to the overall design. This harmonious marriage of opposing elements allows my pieces to resonate with women who desire both empowerment and grace in their fashion choices.

Can you tell us about your creative process when it comes to incorporating texture and layering in your designs?

Texture and layering play vital roles in my creative process, as they add depth and intrigue to my designs. I revel in the art of juxtaposing textures to create visually captivating patterns that reveal glimpses of the wearer’s skin and silhouette. Through intricate layering techniques, I strive to showcase the woman’s form while allowing the fabrics to interact and converse with each other. This approach enhances the sense of movement and dimension in my garments, enabling women to exude confidence and embrace their individuality. It is through thoughtful texture and layering that I craft pieces that empower women to embrace their inner warrior, celebrating their uniqueness rather than concealing it.

We know you’re not just a fashion designer but also a skilled macrame artist. How do you integrate macrame techniques into your designs, and how does it enhance your creations?

Macrame holds a special place in my heart, as it represents the artistry of hand craftsmanship and the absence of mass production. Integrating macrame techniques into my designs allows me to create truly unique pieces that blend softness, femininity, and a touch of edginess. By handcrafting macrame harnesses and integrating them with flowing chiffon dresses, I achieve a juxtaposition of contrasting elements that results in a look that is both soft and feminine, yet edgy and strong. Macrame adds an intricate layer of detail and craftsmanship, elevating my creations and infusing them with a distinct, artisanal quality that resonates with those who appreciate the beauty of handmade artistry.

Sustainable fashion is a significant aspect of your brand. Could you share some of the eco-friendly materials and handmade techniques you incorporate into your designs?

Sustainability is a core value of my brand, and I’m passionate about incorporating eco-friendly materials and handmade techniques into my designs. I prioritise the use of natural fibers like silk, cotton, linen, wool, and bamboo in my creations. Additionally, I have embraced the innovative use of vegan leather made from cactus paddles, which offers a cruelty-free alternative to traditional leather.

To further minimize waste and promote sustainability, I source materials from the Fashion District, where I repurpose leftover fabrics from mass production or discontinued projects. By repurposing and transforming existing materials, I contribute to reducing the fashion industry’s environmental impact. Moreover, in some of my macrame pieces, I utilize nylon or recycled polyester cord, ensuring that every inch is utilised, leaving no waste behind. This conscious approach to materials and techniques allows me to create stunning garments that align with my commitment to sustainability.

What are some of the challenges you face in promoting sustainable fashion, and how do you overcome them?

Promoting sustainable fashion comes with its unique set of challenges, particularly when competing against fast fashion’s affordability and accessibility. However, I firmly believe that the shift towards sustainability is gaining momentum as people become increasingly aware of its importance. To overcome these challenges, I focus on highlighting the value and uniqueness of sustainable fashion. By creating one-of-a-kind pieces that embody sustainability, I offer customers the opportunity to make a conscious choice that aligns with their values. Educating consumers about the environmental impact of fast fashion and the value of investing in quality, sustainable pieces is also crucial. Through storytelling, social media engagement, and collaborations with like-minded individuals and organizations, I strive to create a community of conscious consumers who appreciate the beauty and ethical implications of sustainable fashion.

How do you ensure that your brand’s values align with your commitment to sustainability throughout the entire production process?

At my brand, we have taken concrete steps to ensure that our values align with our commitment to sustainability throughout the entire production process. Firstly, we have adopted a made-to-order approach, creating garments based on customer requests and producing small batches. This allows us to minimize excess inventory and reduce waste significantly. By producing only what is needed, we avoid overproduction and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. Additionally, we are meticulous about sourcing materials. We prioritize eco-friendly and natural fibers such as silk, cotton, linen, wool, and bamboo, as well as vegan leather made from cactus paddles, providing cruelty-free alternatives. Moreover, we actively repurpose materials sourced from the Fashion District, utilizing leftover fabrics from mass production or discontinued projects. By embracing these practices, we ensure that sustainability is at the forefront of our production process, from start to finish.

What are your thoughts on the future of sustainable fashion and its impact on the fashion industry as a whole?

In my opinion, sustainable fashion is the future, and its impact on the fashion industry as a whole will be transformative. As awareness around environmental issues continues to grow, people are becoming more conscious of their consumption patterns. They are recognizing the detrimental effects of fast fashion and the importance of making sustainable choices. This shift in mindset is pushing the fashion industry to adapt and prioritize sustainability. We are witnessing exciting advancements in technology, enabling the recycling of fibers and the creation of fabrics made from natural materials rather than plastics. These innovations are revolutionising the way we produce and consume fashion. By embracing sustainable practices, we not only protect our planet but also foster a more ethical and responsible industry. I believe that as sustainability becomes the norm, it will shape the future of fashion, leading to a more conscious and environmentally friendly approach to style.

How do you envision your brand evolving in the next few years? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations in the pipeline?

Looking ahead, I envision my brand continuing to uphold its core sustainability values while expanding its reach and impact. One exciting avenue for growth is the expansion into accessories, where we can extend our commitment to eco-friendly materials and craftsmanship. I believe that accessories, such as handbags and jewelry, present incredible opportunities to showcase innovative sustainable practices and unique design aesthetics.

Additionally, I am open to exploring collaborations with like-minded individuals and organisations that share our vision for a more sustainable future. Collaborations provide a platform for cross-pollination of ideas, pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion and creating powerful synergies. By embracing these opportunities, I am confident that our brand will continue to evolve, inspiring positive change within the fashion industry and resonating with conscious consumers.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

While I’ve been fortunate to check off some incredible places from my bucket list, such as Italy’s enchanting cities like Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, and Verona, I’m eager to continue exploring. Among the destinations that hold a special allure for me are Vienna, Barcelona, Machu Picchu, and London. Of course, I have a longer list of places I’d love to visit, but these cities currently sit at the top of my must-see destinations.

Finally, if you had one piece of advice to give to aspiring fashion designers, what would it be?

One piece of advice I would give to aspiring fashion designers is to embrace hard work and perseverance. The fashion industry is highly competitive, and success often comes to those who are willing to put in the extra effort. Dedicate yourself to honing your craft, constantly pushing your creative boundaries, and staying up-to-date with industry trends. Be prepared for setbacks and rejection, as they are a natural part of the journey. Use these experiences as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than allowing them to break your spirit. Stay true to your vision and believe in yourself and your unique talent.

Remember, it is through determination and resilience that you can make your mark in the fashion world.

Priya shares the profound meaning behind the name Umara and how it beautifully aligns with the brand’s ethos, emphasising the enduring value and empowerment that each jewellery piece represents.

Join us as we delve into the world of Umara with Priya Faith, a creative force breaking barriers and transforming the landscape of affordable solid gold jewellery. This interview is a must-read for all jewellery enthusiasts, social impact advocates, and those inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit that drives positive change in our world.

What inspired you to create Umara and bring solid gold jewellery to the market at affordable prices?

Umara was inspired by my grandparents; without them, it wouldn’t exist. They started giving me Indian gold when I was very young. While many consider gold a luxury, it is almost a necessity in Indian culture. Many Indian families begin collecting gold for their daughter’s marriage on the day she’s born. And once she’s married, the gold becomes her financial security for her new life. So, passing down gold is an act of empowerment for many South Asian women.

I have always had a love for gold. But as a twenty-something freelancer, purchasing new pieces felt unattainable until I started shopping for gold in India. I quickly realised that gold was more affordable in India and slowly started buying investment pieces.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I recognised an opportunity. After contemplating the idea for a few months, I decided that the potential rewards outweighed the risks of building Umara. So, in 2020, I invested my life savings, which would have been my house deposit, and got to work. In March 2022, I spent a month in India at the house my grandad built (a time I’ll cherish forever), working on our debut collection before launching at the end of April last year.

Can you tell us more about the significance of “Umara” and how it aligns with the brand’s ethos?

Umara, which means “lifetime” in Punjabi, was chosen because it aligns with our ethos of creating quality products that will last a lifetime and beyond. Education is a key pillar of Umara, and I want to empower our community to make informed jewellery purchases.

When I shop, I consider the cost per wear of a purchase and invest in quality pieces that I can wear repeatedly. I have solid gold earrings that I’ve worn every day for years, and they still look brand new. So, when you consider the cost per wear, it becomes an excellent investment.

What makes Umara’s jewellery more than just a purchase, and why do you believe gold is a gift like no other?

For many of us, jewellery holds both sentimental and monetary value. As both of my grandparents are no longer with us, having pieces of jewellery from them is incredibly special to me, and future generations will also experience that sentiment. What could be better than a gift that lasts forever?

As I mentioned earlier, giving gold is also a gift of security and financial independence that many South Indian women wouldn’t have otherwise. That’s why it’s so much more than just another purchase; it’s an act of love.

Could you share some insights into the process of crafting Umara’s jewellery in India?

In India, my partner, who is a GIA gemologist and gold expert, works alongside highly skilled artisans. These artisans have been handcrafting and finishing gold jewellery for decades, using specialist techniques passed down through generations. It’s truly an art form. We have combined these traditional techniques and skills with modern designs for our collection. Currently, our designs lean towards a more contemporary style, but in the future, I aim to incorporate more traditional Indian influences and pieces.

How does Umara ensure that its gold jewellery is accessible and affordable without compromising on quality?

Many jewellery brands mark up their products as much as 1000%. However, our margins are a fraction of that, even for the same quality. Some brands retail gold-plated and vermeil jewellery at similar prices to our solid gold pieces, which results in exorbitant margins. Instead of misleading customers and charging unnecessary premiums, I made it my mission to prioritise fair pricing and transparency at Umara.

Our prices are primarily based on the weight and karat of the gold, diamond carat, and manufacturing costs, which include hallmarking at the London Assay Office. As per UK requirements, all our products weighing over 1 gram are hallmarked to guarantee the fineness of the gold. So, when purchasing solid gold, always look for the hallmark.

Where do you see Umara five years from now?

To be completely honest, in the current climate, my main focus is on survival. While I would love to work on new collections and collaborations, my immediate goal is to generate a steady monthly income and reinvest in Umara.

Looking at the bigger picture, I have numerous visions for where we’ll be five years from now. From working with upcoming designers to launching new collections and collaborating with other brands, I have big ambitions. However, my ultimate dream is to be in a position where I can make a real difference in India through the Umara Pledge.

Can you talk about any philanthropic or social initiatives that Umara is involved in?

As Umara takes from India, it is important for us to give back as well. Through the Umara Pledge, we continuously support carefully selected charitable causes. From funding education to providing medical care in remote villages, a percentage of our profits will go towards making a real difference. While we are still a long way from turning a profit, I am committed to giving back wherever possible.

Our current campaign involves donating £25 from every purchase to Unique Homes, an all-girls orphanage in Jalandhar, Punjab. I personally visited Unique Homes in 2018 and witnessed their incredible work first-hand, so it is a privilege to support their mission.

What advice would you give someone considering starting their own brand?

Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before launching because perfection will never happen. Put your concept out into the world and build from there. As a freelance marketing consultant who has worked with startups and well-established brands since 2016, I still learn something new every single day with Umara. There will be days when you want to give up, moments of regret, and plenty of tears, but you owe it to yourself to keep showing up. So, build a support network, take care of yourself, and keep going.

Our readers love to travel; which destinations are at the top of your bucket list?

The list of destinations is endless, but at the top of my list are Colombia & Panama, Tahiti, and Tanzania. I am also looking forward to returning to India and exploring more; Jaipur and Rishikesh are on the agenda for my next trip.

What does self-care mean to you?

Over the years, self-care has become more holistic for me. As founders, we are often told to pour everything into building our businesses, but I believe in balance, even when it comes to pursuing our dreams.

While I am dedicated to investing in my business, I recognise that it cannot exist without me being at my best. I consider things like my Shreddy membership, therapy, and screen-free getaways as investments in my business as well. If you don’t take time to rest, your body will eventually force you to, and I learned that the hard way.

On the flip side, sometimes self-care means being productive and accomplishing tasks that you may have been putting off. Trust me; you’ll feel better once it’s done! Since I am juggling my freelance work and Umara, I track everything I do and time-block my days. While it may seem mundane, it is an essential element of self-care for me.

Get ready to be inspired and immersed in the world of SANDCAT as we unravel the fascinating journey of two visionaries who have revolutionized the way we express ourselves through fashion….

How did the idea of founding SANDCAT come about, and what was your vision behind creating a fashion brand that celebrates self-expression?

Although SANDCAT launched recently, the idea of SANDCAT as a non-traditional fashion brand took root many years ago. We observed a rising trend in events that embraced unique and unconventional outfits. While Burning Man is widely known, similar events were gaining traction worldwide. What struck us was that it wasn’t just about clothing; it was about valuing self-expression and breaking boundaries. People sought to express their individuality through their attire, but finding truly unique and bold outfits was often a challenge. These events occurred regularly, each demanding fresh and exceptional clothing combinations. As we immersed ourselves in these vibrant occasions, we were inspired by the people and the captivating outfits that stood out from the crowd. This inspiration propelled us to create a brand that would embrace and empower this vibrant community of self-expressionists.

SANDCAT’s mission is to encourage women to confidently own their styles. How do you ensure that each piece from your brand embodies this message and empowers women to stand out?

Indeed, our goal is not only to make women stand out but to do so with unwavering confidence. When selecting our collection, we focus on finding the right balance where you feel incredible in what you wear without compromising comfort. One key element you’ll notice is our extensive use of stretchy fabrics. These fabrics provide comfort and are tailored to fit various sizes and body shapes. We also love that our designs are all handmade, adding a special quality to each item, making them look unique and exclusive. Most importantly, we listen to our customers and continuously strive to improve our designs. This helps us cultivate a community where women can openly share experiences, express themselves, and draw inspiration from one another. That’s the essence of our brand.

Fashion is ever-evolving, with trends coming and going. How does SANDCAT stay relevant in the fast-paced fashion industry while maintaining a distinctive brand identity?

We take great pride in our distinctive brand identity, setting ourselves apart in the fast-paced fashion industry. Instead of chasing temporary trends, we believe that lasting relevance comes from embracing our unique and futuristic approach. Our focus is on creating timeless, innovative, and forward-thinking designs. That’s why we are actively exploring the realm of AI designs, which allows us to push the boundaries of creativity. We look forward to unveiling our AI collection soon!

Collaborations with influencers and celebrities have become common in the fashion world. Have you engaged in any exciting partnerships or collaborations that have had a significant impact on SANDCAT’s journey?

Collaborating with influencers is highly important to us as it helps us gain credibility and trust from our audience. When influencers partner with us, their loyal followers also start to trust our brand, gradually building our SANDCAT community.

In the early stages, we collaborated with the talented Estonian actress, Ingrid Margus (@ingridmargus), who modeled our products and promoted them on Instagram. This collaboration had an immediate positive impact on our brand visibility and paved the way for further partnerships, including one with the highly successful Estonian influencer and media personality, Brigitte Susanne Hunt (@brigittesusanne). As we continue to expand into new markets, we have been fortunate to collaborate with a diverse range of international artists, DJs, and other creative minds. Working with influencers is an ongoing journey for us, and we will continue to collaborate with them to expand our brand.

Could you share feedback and testimonials from your customers regarding their experience of wearing SANDCAT designs?

The main feedback we receive from our clients is the overwhelming number of compliments they receive when wearing our designs. Many people approach them to express admiration for their visually striking outfits. We strive for every design we choose and create to have such an impactful effect. It’s as if our fashion serves as a means to connect with others, acting as a conversation starter.

Our clients also appreciate the attention to detail and unique style that our designs offer, making them feel confident and special on any occasion. We continue to seek new ideas and inspirations to ensure that each SANDCAT design creates a lasting impression and fosters meaningful connections among people.

Welcome to an exclusive interview with House of Sól founder, Nazlican Yoney, a jewellery brand that celebrates unapologetic women and empowers them with elegant armor for every occasion.

In this interview, we delve into the inspirations and vision behind House of Sól, exploring how their unique pieces serve as a suit of armor for modern women, whether they’re attending a dinner or taking charge in the boardroom. Get ready to discover the captivating story and empowering designs of House of Sól…

Can you provide more details on the inspiration behind the establishment of House of Sól and how your academic background in political science and professional experience influenced its creation?

As the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of House of Sól (HoS), I draw inspiration from my Russian and Arabic heritage, taking pride in being the great-granddaughter of a late-Ottoman grand vizier. With a background in political science and an MBA degree, along with years of managerial experience at Google, my passion for porcelain and gold forming developed in my home studio, which served as my sanctuary amidst a busy professional life. Every weekend, I immersed myself in the craft at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, learning from masters about metalworking, gemstone sourcing, and designing timeless pieces.

As a political scientist, I believe that what we wear tells our story, reflecting our values, aspirations, and place in society. This belief forms the foundation of House of Sól’s creations, which blend feminism, politics, contemporary art, and Turquerie. Each piece, named ‘Untitled’ followed by a description, captures the ever-changing meanings of objects across time and space.

Could you explain the significance of the name “House of Sól,” its reflection of the brand’s values and vision, and what inspired your focus on traditional craftsmanship in creating your jewellery pieces?

House of Sól, meaning “Dynasty of the Sun,” was born from the captivating stories and precious stones of Asia Minor. Each handcrafted piece we create, shaped by age-old artisanal techniques, transforms into ‘wearable contemporary art’ within the hidden tunnels of the Grand Bazaar. The brand’s motto, “Ex Oriente Lux,” translates to “the Sun rises from the East,” symbolising the unique culture and creativity originating from this ancient civilisation.

House of Sól pays homage to Turquerie, a post-modern interpretation of Orientalist fashion that imitates Ottoman art and culture from the 16th to 18th centuries. Western Europe’s fascination with the exotic and unknown Ottoman culture, particularly the ruling class, led to the popularity of this trend. Our brand honours the Orient, incorporating its precious stones, metals, and artisanship. Through our one-of-a-kind lock design, necklaces can be mixed and matched, allowing for personalised combinations and even serving as interior design elements.

In what way do you envision House of Sól pieces acting as a suit of armour for women and conveying specific messages through their designs, especially in terms of empowering women and promoting individual expression? Additionally, how do you hope to reshape the perception of fine jewellery through your brand?

House of Sól is a tribute to independent women and the sun, serving as a suit of armour for those who unapologetically embrace their true selves. Our jewellery is not merely an accessory but an indispensable part of a woman’s wardrobe, providing a shield she can wear to a steering committee meeting, a dinner party, or even during significant life transitions like divorcing a dull husband. Moreover, our brand encourages women to purchase jewellery for themselves rather than relying on gifts from men. These pieces are designed to empower women in their everyday battles, celebrating their strength, pride, and womanhood. We aim to challenge the outdated culture of men purchasing jewellery for women and empower women to buy their own House of Sól pieces.

Our goal is not to sell a wide variety of models to a small group of women, but rather to become a woman’s most cherished jewel, worn during important moments like giving a presentation or leaving an expired relationship. All our jewellery is made by women for women, with meticulous care.

Could you elaborate on the significance of collaborating with indigenous artisans and using natural materials in your jewellery? How does this align with House of Sól’s sustainability efforts? Additionally, how do you ensure the uniqueness and limited-edition status of each House of Sól piece?

At House of Sól, our commitment to working with indigenous artisans and utilising natural materials is at the heart of our brand ethos. We believe that jewellery should tell a story, and the artisans who craft our pieces are an integral part of that narrative, just like the natural materials we use. Collaborating with indigenous artisans from Istanbul’s historic Grand Bazaar allows us to preserve and honour ancient cultures and techniques. Our artisans are master craftspeople, bringing generations of skill and knowledge to every piece they create. Operating on a handmade-to-order basis, our production process takes two weeks, reflecting our slow luxury approach. This not only ensures passionate design and ethical craftsmanship but also minimises waste by avoiding excess stock. By handcrafting each piece upon order, we use only the necessary resources, protecting the planet’s limited resources and embodying true sustainable luxury.

Additionally, our commitment to using natural materials adds to the uniqueness of our brand. Our jewellery is not mass-produced; it consists of limited editions, with each piece numbered like artwork. If we obtain enough exquisite gemstones for ten necklaces, there won’t be an eleventh. This approach promotes sustainability and guarantees the individuality of each House of Sól piece.

How do you see House of Sól evolving in the future? Do you have plans for expansion or collaborations?

House of Sól’s journey begins with meticulously crafted jewellery, but our vision extends far beyond that. We aim to revitalise Turquerie, a historical fascination with Turkish art and culture that influenced Western Europe from the 16th to 18th centuries. We want to introduce the world to the rich craft traditions of Asia Minor, which hold centuries of artisanal knowledge and skills. In the near future, we plan to expand into other craft areas such as handmade quilting and Turkish needle embroidery. These traditional crafts align with the spirit of Turquerie, keeping cultural heritage alive in a contemporary context.

Furthermore, we are excited to announce plans for a new line of luxury home wear, including silk kimonos and luxury pyjamas adorned with pearl buttons, featuring post-modern patterns inspired by Turkish tiles. These designs are not just meant to be worn but also intended to serve as crowns.

Our aspiration is to become an all-encompassing lifestyle brand that embodies the essence of artisanship and the grandeur of slow luxury. By merging traditional craft techniques with modern design elements, we aim to create a brand narrative that beautifully captures the diversity and richness of artisanal heritage. House of Sól stands as a testament to timeless beauty, refined elegance, and the celebration of the art of living well.

Could you provide more details about the unique lock you have developed for your brand? What motivated you to create this lock, and what were your design goals?

From the beginning, the signature lock mechanism has been a cherished element of House of Sól’s design philosophy. The lock is not merely a functional component; it represents a key principle of our brand values, transcending the conventional boundaries of jewellery. Our designs are intended to be more than accessories; they also serve as decorative objects for our homes and tables. Our mission is to liberate majestic three-dimensional corals, turquoise, pearls, and diamonds from their traditional role as jewellery, giving them new spheres of influence and purpose.

The lock plays a crucial role in this transformation, acting as the linchpin that allows each necklace to transition into different forms and functions. Designed to detach completely from the necklaces, our unique locks provide owners with the flexibility to explore new ways of usage. This vision was ingrained in our brand ethos from the start but required an intensive 1.5-year research and development process. I invested countless hours in creating drawings, crafting moulds, engaging in discussions with artisans, and producing prototypes. After a six-month trial period, I secured intellectual property rights for the design, making it a distinctive trademark of House of Sól. Thanks to this effort, any woman can enter the world of House of Sól with a single lock and unlock the rest of the jewellery collection. The magical lock allows for the creation of a personalised House of Sól style, combining pearls, corals, and woods from Tahiti, Africa, India, and Egypt according to each individual’s aesthetic. It’s like jewellery with the versatility of Lego.

Could you share a memorable moment or success story in House of Sól’s journey that stands out to you?

One particular achievement that comes to mind is our success in our first year. We were fortunate to be discovered and invited to showcase our collection in two prominent design stores in Manhattan. Shortly after, we participated in a trunk show at a prestigious art and jewellery gallery in the Hamptons. It was a tremendously proud summer for us to see that our vision and dedication to craftsmanship paid off in such a short time. Now, our greatest joy comes from receiving photos on Instagram featuring our HoS necklaces being worn by doctors in the ER and pilots in the cockpit.

How do you engage with your customers and build a community around House of Sól? Are there any unique initiatives or events that you organise?

House of Sól has established a strong presence and engaged community among thousands of active women worldwide. We maintain a vibrant daily conversation on social media with these unapologetically authentic HoS women. Our slogan, “Jewellery for Unapologetic Women,” represents those who know their worth and are not afraid to fight for it.

Among our community are successful professionals such as pilots, surgeons, nurses, academics, students, and entrepreneurs. Their commitment to giving back is noteworthy. At House of Sól, we regularly raise funds to provide scholarships for female students’ university fees, particularly in underprivileged areas.

We also include a different feminist book each year with every purchase of HoS jewellery, and donate these books to public libraries in disadvantaged regions. The dedication of our HoS women to the cause is evident, with some even tattooing “Unapologetic” on themselves.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I find myself continually drawn back to Marrakech, no matter how many times I’ve visited. A stay at El Fenn is my idea of a perfect experience. While I have explored the Middle East and North Africa extensively, immersing myself in their rich cultures and marvelling at their wonders, I have yet to discover the beauties of India in person. It’s a chapter in my travel diary that remains unwritten. Jaipur, with its blush-coloured architecture and regal history, is calling out to me. After India, I have my sights set on exploring the vibrant cultures and historic wonders of Oaxaca and Mexico City.

What does self-care mean to you?

For me, self-care isn’t about sipping kale-infused green juice shots or contorting into pretzel-like poses in a Bikram yoga class. Instead, my self-care routine revolves around simpler things. A silent morning is non-negotiable for me. Those first 2-3 hours of each day are reserved for myself. Sometimes, I indulge in the luxury of a long shower, turning my bathroom into a makeshift spa with flickering candlelight. However, I’m not immune to new trends. Recently, I’ve explored gua sha and Japanese face yoga, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the results. Currently, my favourite self-care ritual involves a daily gua sha massage using my preferred oils. Who would have thought that a small jade tool could work such wonders?

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Tony Hendrix, the visionary founder of Kytin, a groundbreaking footwear brand that seamlessly blends minimal comfort, support, and sustainability. With a passion for revolutionizing the industry and a keen eye for innovation, Tony has created the world’s first 3D Recovery Sock, a product that is set to redefine the way we think about foot health and well-being.

Driven by a desire to address the staggering waste generated by the footwear industry, Tony embarked on a mission to reduce environmental impact while providing invisible support for our feet. Drawing from his experience in the field and witnessing the immense waste firsthand, he was inspired to develop a unique category of footwear that challenges traditional norms and combines the best elements of shoes, socks, and orthotics.

In this interview, Tony takes us on a journey through the inception and development of Kytin’s remarkable products. He shares insights into the brand’s sustainable practices, including the use of recyclable materials and their innovative 3D knitting process, which reduces cut-and-sew waste by over 90%. Moreover, Tony delves into the exceptional features of Parasoles, highlighting their ability to promote natural foot motion, improve balance, and alleviate foot fatigue and tissue stress.

So, join us as we delve into the mind of Tony Hendrix, the driving force behind Kytin, and learn more about his vision for a more active, sustainable, and foot-friendly future.

Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind creating a new category of footwear that combines minimal comfort, support, and sustainability?

I was inspired by two things: having previously worked in the footwear industry, I witnessed firsthand the immense waste embedded in the development process alone. I learned that over 300 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills each year. I asked myself, “How can we reduce this waste?” Additionally, I was inspired by the concept of invisible support. I wanted to create a product that could provide minimal or invisible support without relying on traditional footwear like shoes or sandals.

How did you come up with the idea of the world’s first 3D Recovery Sock?

What was the process like in developing this innovative product? The idea began to take shape during a creative thinking session one Saturday. I started 3D modeling supportive anatomical footbeds to test prototypes, with the aim of improving a person’s recovery process.

What sets Parasoles apart from traditional shoes and socks in terms of foot fatigue relief and tissue stress reduction?

Our patented technology combines a dual-layer compression sock with an anatomical footbed. The generatively designed sole features dynamic arch support, which improves pressure distribution and alleviates various foot ailments.

The concept of “minimal barefoot” is intriguing. Could you elaborate on how your footwear design promotes natural foot motion and improves balance?

Parasole helps adapt to the natural contours of your foot, even on hard flat surfaces like wood floors. The minimal sole allows for proprioceptive feedback, enabling you to feel the surface you’re walking on, which is a departure from most shoes. While initially designed to aid athletes in recovery, we discovered that we are all athletes in our daily lives and need to prioritise recovery.

Sustainability is a key aspect of your brand. Can you share some details about the sustainable practices incorporated into the production of Parasoles?

We are extremely conscious of waste throughout the manufacturing process and the end of the product’s life cycle. Our goal was to solve one problem without creating another. Our recovery socks are 100% recyclable, made from a recycled nylon blend or regenerative merino wool. The anatomical sole is moulded using 100% recyclable TPR or TPU. We are actively seeking more opportunities to utilize recycled materials in our footwear.

How does the 3D knitting process reduce cut-and-sew waste by over 90%? Could you explain the technology behind it?

Our 3D knitting process employs circular knitting to produce nearly the exact amount of fabric required for a specific size. This differs from the cut-and-sew method, which involves cutting patterns from templates.

Being environmentally conscious is crucial in today’s world. Can you talk about your vision towards zero waste and how it reflects in your product’s lifecycle? We have implemented a Re-Loop program to take back old or worn pairs. Our aim is to recycle them into new pairs or other products, minimizing waste and promoting circularity.

What role does the lightweight TPR polymer play in creating a supportive sole? How does its recyclability contribute to the overall sustainability of Parasoles?

The lightweight and flexible TPR polymer possesses favorable properties for injection molding, enabling us to create a supportive sole. Its recyclability allows for continuous reuse with minimal degradation. Giving the material a second life extends its usability and reduces waste.

Considering the focus on sustainability, are there any plans to expand the use of eco-friendly materials or explore new manufacturing techniques in the future?

We are actively working on developing new materials and forming partnerships with like-minded manufacturers.

In terms of arch support, pressure distribution, and micro-cushioning, what are some unique features of Parasoles that customers can benefit from? Parasole is a unique lightweight recovery sock that combines the best features of a compression sock, orthotic, and shoe. It is the most comfortable and supportive sock you’ll ever find, suitable for any occasion. It’s the product we’ve all been missing from our closets.

Are there any plans to expand the range of Parasoles products or introduce new designs that cater to specific needs or preferences?

Yes, we recently launched our Kytin QTR, which adds additional functionality to our current style. We also have exciting new products currently in development and hope to help even more people discover the benefits of our recovery products.

Could you give us a glimpse into the design process of Parasoles?

How do you ensure that aesthetics and functionality are balanced in your product? Our design process always begins with function. If the anatomical function and integrity are not prioritized, aesthetics hold little meaning.

As the founder, what has been the most rewarding aspect of creating Parasoles? Are there any particular moments or achievements that stand out to you?

We find it incredibly rewarding to hear from our new customers about how recovery socks have positively impacted their lives. They have proven invaluable during physical therapy or in aiding recovery from surgeries. These stories drive us forward. We truly believe that we can create a better footwear product in a sustainable way that genuinely benefits the wearers.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

If given the chance, I would have secured all our investments from the beginning. Lack of funding is the only thing holding us back from making a significant impact on people’s well-being and activity levels.

Can you share any upcoming initiatives or collaborations that the brand is working on to further promote sustainable living or raise awareness about foot health?

We have some exciting initiatives and collaborations in the pipeline, but we can’t disclose the details just yet.

For those who are new to the brand, what message would you like to convey about Parasoles and its mission? Our mission is to help people lead more active and healthy lifestyles by rediscovering the importance of our feet. We provide enough freedom and support to make them an extension of your foot—nothing more, nothing less.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Let’s not forget that Kytin Parasoles are perfect for travel. You can breeze through security and onto the plane with ease while enjoying lightweight support and protection from germs and bacteria. Right now, visiting the Netherlands is at the top of my list.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are passionate about creating sustainable and innovative products in the fashion industry?

As an industrial designer, I believe that form informs function. Always strive to do things better. Functional products hold a stronger position than those solely driven by fashion. Look for ways to create products using superior materials or improved techniques. That’s the best path to success.
