Banish the winter blues and get dancing at The MANOR London, the coolest new dance studio in town

Our resident dancer Hannah Tan-Gillies checked out MVMT at The MANOR London, the coolest new studio in town, for a private heels class with Tarek Kwhiss. Here’s what went down.

Dance into Happiness at MVMT

If you ever need a pick-me-up to banish the winter blues, then believe us, there is no better way than by getting your heart rate going with a dance class.

Opened in November in Finsbury Park, MVMT at The Manor London is London’s premier destination for dance enthusiasts, aspiring performers and even for those just looking for a nice boogie as there are classes for all levels of dancers here.

The Manor London

Elevate Your Dance Experience

This state-of-the-art professional dance studio literally has everything you need to break a sweat. The changing room is complete with showers, blow-dryers and a full set of toiletries, while a cute little café in the lobby offers delectable (and healthy) post-workout snacks.

The class schedule is a thing of beauty. Of course, there is choreography, commercial dance heels, hip hop and even a Dance 4 Camera class, but there are plenty of non-dance classes too such as Vinyasa Yoga Flow Yoga and body sculpt.

We tried heels with Tarek Kwhiss, who is a breath of fierce fresh air in this dreary winter. Tarek has been doing heels for seven years and is also part of Netflix’s Dance 100 – so you know you are in good hands.

A woman working out

Unleash Your Inner Dancer: MVMT at The Manor London

Class started with a quick warmup and stretching *a must for any class, then a focus on technique. With heels, the walk and the attitude are everything so mastering the art of walking in heels and the confidence of walking is a must.

Then we moved on to choreo, where we unleashed our inner ‘naughty girls’ with a sexy, empowering and bombastic choreography of Beyonce’s early 2000s classic. Tarek broke down the steps very clearly, ensuring that I understood each sequence before moving onto the next one. While I certainly broke a sweat, the final performance was certainly well worth it. Check it out below.

So — if you’ve ever dreamed of moving like a dancer, this is the place to make that dream a reality. Book a class at MVMT at The Manor London today so you can unleash your inner dancer too.

Located on the beautiful stretch of the Bwejuu – Paje beach in the South east coast of the island, named one of the world top 30 islands, Baraza Resort & Spa is like your own private little slice of paradise. There are only 30 palatial villas, each one with its own private plunge pool and an indulgent amount of space for guests to really immerse themselves in the sheer grandeur of it all. Team Coco got the chance to escape the chilly London winter and find some sun (and our zen) with the Baraza Resort & Spa.

We tried their Yoga retreat package, a 6 day retreat that combines a wonderfully inclusive series of Hatha yoga sessions and some truly rejuvenating massage treatments at the world-renowned Frangipani spa. There is no better to find your center than at the Baraza Resort & Spa. So if you’re feeling the need to renew your sense of calm in one of the world’s most beautiful luxury resorts— then here’s how.

700am

Wake up to a light tropical breeze in your own palatial villa, and casually stroll along the resort’s many stunning courtyards, and eventually finding a spot by the beach, where you are serenaded by the gentle crashing of the waves of the Indian Ocean. Here’s where our morning practice begins.

745am

Our yogi, the truly charming Sree greets you with a big smile on his face, and prepares the setup for this morning’s Hatha Yoga Practice. Get ready for some OHM.

845am

Make your way back to the Livingstone Terrace restaurant for a lovely buffet-style breakfast. Everything here is locally sourced, and is a mixture of Swahili and international cuisine. Do try the dried coconuts dipped in honey, and partake in some bespoke smoothies — or maybe even a watermelon juice.

11am

Head over to the world-renowned Frangipani spa, where your lovely therapist will lead you through yet another palatial courtyard and into, what I consider to be the world’s most beautiful relaxation room. The Frangipani spa’s therapists are all impeccable, and you can literally feel all of your worries will melt away.

12PM

Catch some sun and take a dip in your own private plunge pool. After all, you need to make the most of your stunning private villa. So reading your favourite magazine (House of Coco obviously) and playing some tunes is definitely recommended.

1pm

Catch a private Swahili cooking lesson with some of Baraza Resort & Spa’s top chefs. We learned how to cook Chicken Dhansak, following the recipe of one of Zanzibar’s most iconic personalities, Farouk Bulsara, aka Freddy Mercury.

4pm

Finish off the afternoon, with a cup (or five) of Masala Tea. This unique spiced tea was a definite favourite during our visit, and is also a very calming concoction.

7pm

Treat yourself to a glass of Dawa at the Dhababu Bar & Lounge, a local cocktail that mixes gin, cognac, lemon, and honey. The locals call it ‘medicine’ and it surely hits the spot after a serious day of relaxation at the Baraza Resort & Spa. Head over to the Sultan’s Dining Room for a fabulous meal. Here you can enjoy a menu that showcases the best of the island while being serenaded by the music of the Taarab band.

From relaxing Pranayamas to Yoga Shala meditations, you will definitely leave Zanzibarwith a whole new level of calm. One that can only be achieved amidst the breathtaking natural scenery of the Baraza Resort & Spa.

The Yoga Retreat Package at Baraza Resort & Spa is a 6 day all inclusive luxury package that begins a €3569 for single occupancy and €2353 for double occupancy (per person sharing)for a Two Bedroom Garden View Villa in the low season, and €4711 for single occupancy and €3067 for double occupancy during high season. Los Angeles is the epitome of what California is all about. The palm-tree lined boulevards of Beverly Hills, the colourful houses of Venice Beach, the art-deco buildings of DTLA, the glitzy shops on Melrose Place, are all parts of what make Los Angeles unique.

One thing about Los Angeles that really stands out, is their passion for health and wellness. Yoga on the beach, organic smoothies, and cold-pressed juices are all the rage in LA, and is probably one of the reasons they live such chilled-out, happy, and healthy lives (that and maybe the perpetually sunny weather too) Team Coco shoes you how to eat your way through LA – in the cleanest and greenest way possible with our top foodie picks in the City of Angels.

Best Girl
Located on the stunning art-deco building of the Ace Hotel DTLA, Best Girl is the perfect spot in the neighbourhood for a power lunch. Best Girl is named after the first film screened in their gothic Spanish theatre way back in 1927. The spectacular interiors serve as the perfect backdrop for their even more spectacular menu. Headed by the Michelin Star Chef Michael Cimarusti, who is known for championing sustainable seafood, Best Girl serves both fresh seasonal fare and also all the classics. Try out their Avocado “Alligator Pear” Toast – which is honestly one of the best Avocado Toasts you’ll have on the West Coast.

Love & Salt
Love & Salt is a fantastic low-key Manhattan Beach restaurant by Chef Michael Fiorelli. Their food philosophy is that food only needs two ingredients to be great — love & salt; and this philosophy can be tasted throughout their gorgeous Italian inspired menu. Their cozy atmosphere, and curated but approachable wine-list, make Love & Salt truly enjoyable culinary experience. No bells and whistles, just good, clean, well-made food. Try their Freehkilicious Salad, a five grain, five herb salad that became my instant favourite; and also the California Endive Salad. Yummy food — without all the empty calories!

Cafe Gratitude
Located on the super cool Venice Beach, Cafe Gratitude is all about serving earnestly good Vegan fare. Everything on the menu is named after a positive affirmation. The Kale Cesar said is called “Dazzling,” the Raw Pesto Kelp Noodles is called “Liberated” while the Daily Dessert Special is called “Remarkable”. You are then invited to order by saying; “I am Dazzling,” “I am Liberated” or “I am Remarkable” – so you leave Cafe Gratitude with both a happy tummy and a happy heart.

If you are reading this, then we would like to congratulate you on taking a step forward towards a healthy lifestyle. Many people think of getting a nice sculpted body by just sitting on the couch watching TV and eating junk food. But that is not just possible. Although getting your body into shape seems like sweating and time consuming process, the effort you put has a positive impact on your life. If you wish to begin your fitness journey for a healthy and happy life, here are some advice and tips you should follow.

#1 Eat the right food

Vegetables and fruits are the best things to eat for anyone willing to get into the shape. Apple, for instance, can make your tummy feel full for up to four hours. Broccoli and beans have the ability to keep your digestive system clean and well-functioning. Lean meats such as chicken and seafood such as shrimps are a great source of protein and other nutrients that can keep your muscles fit. You can buy fresh foods at the best price using vouchers and dealsas it’s the new trend nowadays and it saves you more money than buying it from a market.

#2 Take the right portion of the meal

Along with eating the right foods, it is also necessary to decide the right portion of your meals. The metabolism can improve from well portioning your meals. Try to eat smaller portions six times rather than consuming three large portions a day. Consuming smaller portions will help you with breathing smoother during your workout sessions. As there will be less amount of food in your body, more energy will be spent in your exercise.

#3 Exercise every day

Include exercising at least for an hour in your everyday routine. You don’t have to be tough on yourself by doing a lot of jogging and running, but you should do some moderate physical exercise that can keep muscles active. Go on for a short walk or do physical exercise at certain intervals. It may seem stressful in the beginning, but know that your body is changing for better. Make sure you drink enough water and intake protein rich food after every workout session.

#4 Get enough sleep

As most of us are involved with a 8-hour job, it becomes essential to get adequate sleep to prepare your body for the next day. For your body to keep it going throughout the day, you need at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep. However, if you feel tired after work, taking a small nap is advisable. Don’t take a long nap of more than half an hour otherwise it will keep you awake till late night.

#5 Keep motivating yourself

One of the most important keys to stay in shape is being positive and keep yourself motivated. If you keep a positive mindset, you will be able to keep your body in shape. Rather than telling yourself ‘I am too busy to workout’, tell ‘I should make my health a priority’. Let’s take a look at Charity Witt’s success as an example, a medical undergraduate who became homeless and worked her way out of poverty only to become a world famous power lifter while suffering spinal deformities. Over time those positive thoughts will eliminate negative ones, and thus, helping you make your choices better.

If you are looking to shed stress, eat clean and chill out then retreat to the secluded, less commercial south side of Mauritius for a rejuvenating wellness break at Anantara Iko Resort. The new wellness programmes use restorative Ayurveda treatments alongside local ingredients such as Tamarin salt from the village on the western coast and spices including turmeric and ginger. Self-healing, restoration, improved energy flow and calming rituals are the foundation of each wellness package, created with health and wellbeing conscientious travellers in mind.
The five-day wellness programme incorporates the following treatments:

Day 1:

Start the day with a traditional Tai Chi session to connect the body and mind. This moving meditation enhances muscular strength, joint flexibility, calms the senses and soothes the soul.
Supporting the actions and benefits of Tai Chi, a restorative 90-minute Ayurveda massage follows. Benefits of Ayurvedic massages include: improved blood circulation to help blood reach nerve endings, toning of muscles, calming the brain and body, lubricating and strengthening joints, increased mental alertness.

Day 2:

Known for its self-healing benefits, the touch therapy of Abhyanga massage aims to balance dosha types using oils mixed with herbs for maximum benefits which stimulate the nervous system, enhance coordination between sensory organs, while strengthening muscles. This massage supports healing, boosts energy, reduces recovery time after an injury, eases pain, and enhances relaxation, mood, and wellbeing.

Day 3:

The ancient self-healing practice of Qi Gong creates a calmness of the mind while powering the body with movements that improve joint flexibility and muscle strength. Qi Gong also supports balance and harmony within the body, improves digestion, and can be an effective treatment for insomnia and many other sleep disorders.

Day 4:

The Ayurvedic therapy Shirodhara, which is a Sanskrit word coming from shro (head) and dhara (flow), involves gently pouring herbal oils over the forehead. This is ideal for those with a vata-pitta imbalance as it can harmonise the body’s energy, awaken intuition, improve memory, support sleep, focus attention and improve concentration.

Day 5:

Round up the five-day programme with a choice of Tai Chi or Qi Gong to absorb and reinforce the full benefits of the wellness programme. Through moving meditation, you maximise the calming effects on the mind and physical benefits to the body.

Most people in these modern times have a busy work schedule, and that leaves them with no time to do most of the very vital activities in their lives, something that is quintessential for living a healthy life.

For those who know the famous Gigi Hadid, they simply cannot deny the great body of this Victoria Secret Model despite her busy working schedule. No doubt, she has her trainer Rob Piela to thank for maintaining her fitness routine.

Just like the way you will want to create some time to access a UK casino like Red Spins casino online and other such modes of entertainment, you should keep a check on your body and its exercise demands. And in fact, fitness should come first. So, what is it that you can do to ensure yourself a fit body. Here are some tips from Piela for an equipment-free workout.

Warming Up
Whether it’s in the evening after work or after waking up in the morning, you should do 2 sets of the moves below without resting. It raises your core temperature, loosens your muscles and sets your heart racing.

Body weight squats for 10 repetitions

Jumping Jacks for 25 repetitions

Alternating forward lunges for 20 repetitions

High knees for 25 repetitions

After that, you move to the workout as follows, and you should also do 2 sets of each without resting

Push-ups for 10 repetitions – Begin in a high position and hands flat on the floor, wrist under shoulder and shoulder-width apart. Body in 1 long line

Sit-ups with Twist for 10 repetitions
Lie facing up while knees are bent, hands behind the head and heels on the floor. Sit up by engaging your core but don’t pull your neck. In a sitting position, bring elbow to your knee twisting the body to that side. Repeat on the other side and lay back again to repeat.

Tricep Dips for 10 repetitions
Sit with legs in front, feet flat on the floor. Place palms behind you on the ground, fingers facing forward. Lift yourself and your butt to touch ground every time.

Wall Sits for 30 seconds
Stand with feet together, back on the wall and hands on the hips. You can put them in the chest together. Bend knees until thighs are parallel. Lift one leg for the added challenge if you can.

Single-Leg Calf Raises for 15 repetitions
Stand while feet are hip-apart. Raise knee to hip level and be stable. Tighten your core and lift the heel high. Lower and repeat on the other for fifteen times.

Squat Jumps for 15 repetitions
Stand up, feet straight and wider than hip distance. Push your butt back like trying to sit and bend knees while the chest is straight. Jump in the air for the repetitions.

For Cardio and Core Finisher, do the following set without resting

Mountain Climbers for 30 seconds

Plank for 30 seconds

Burpees for 30 seconds

V-ups for 30 seconds

These moves can go a long way to ensure you get the daily workout and cut the accumulating flab in your body due to sitting long hours and unhealthy binging.

Here at House of Coco we are always on the lookout for stylish brands making an impact in the fashion industry. If you haven’t come across Asquith London yet I guarantee once this conscious fashion brand is on your radar, you’ll be spotting it regularly in your yoga class, on the school run and in your local coffee shop.

Founded by Alice Asquith in 2002, this yoga and activewear range combines high quality with style and best of all this ethical, eco-friendly brand is not just for the yoga mat, it can be styled for a more relaxed day look. Alice who was taught to ‘make and mend’ by her grandmother has always made her own clothing, when we meet at the Asquith Eco Summit, she is sporting a stylish floral jacket she made in her 20’s and it still looks chic and timeless on her. She greets me like an old friend and wants to know what I think of the brand. I’ve got to be honest, hands up, I hadn’t come across Asquith until recently. My yoga kit is mainly dominated by Nike staples and the odd piece of Lulu Lemon however I’ve a feeling this is about to change.

The new collection is a range of wearable staples, beautifully designed with soft, durable fabrics. It’s inspired by Alice’s love of Miami and its Art Deco buildings. Pops of blue and white are scattered throughout the pieces. Asquith’s style is classic yet flattering and multi-functional, you can easily take it outside the studio. I have to be honest, I live in my Asquith Harem pants and have my eye on their jumpsuit, ideal for travelling in.

The range features two core fabrics, Bamboo and Bambor (a natural performance fabric Alice developed and trademarked). Both are ethically made in a Global Organic Textile Standard approved factory in Turkey. Bamboo is an environmentally low-impact and sustainable fabric, it’s ideal for activewear as it’s breathable, naturally anti-bacterial and wicks moisture from the body to the exterior of the fabric so it can evaporate more easily. Asquith is always innovating and looking for ways to increase their sustainability taking cues from leading fashion brands; “Stella McCartney is leading the way when it comes to sustainable fashion, says Alice. She lives and breathes sustainability with her brand. And I love her use of modern, innovative fabrics and technology and focus on a more circular economy”.

It’s evident that Alice is on mission to produce stylish pieces that are made with love and you can feel that her new collection is a labour of love. Asquith is not just about the environment, its about the people. Alice regularly visits the factory in Turkey that makes her collection, run by a strong female matriarch character. “It’s like one big family, we lunch together, swap recipes and there’s a real sense of togetherness” she says.

Asquith is a brand that produces gorgeous clothes with a conscience. For more information on the collection visit www.asquithlondon.com

Holidays are no longer all about excess food, drink and sleep. Health and well-being are high on the traveller agenda, as bookings for wellness experiences soar. According to TripAdvisor’s Experiences Trends Report, global traveller bookings for wellness experiences jumped 69% year-over year as holidaymakers are looking for an all-round healthy break.

The Amare Beach Hotel Marbella is the perfect place to stay for a wellness weekend. They combine an amazing spa, good food and fitness making it the ideal destination for keeping active as well as unwinding. You can design your break to be as active or relaxing as you want. Team Coco opted for a combination of both.

Start your day on a chilled vibe with beach yoga. Guided by Amare teacher, Soledad Jimenez Mateos, this class is aimed at all abilities. Set on the harbour at the front of the hotel you loosen up as you’re taken through some gentle stretching, gradually moving into downward dog and warrior pose. The advantage of doing yoga by the sea is that you breathe in clean air, feel the gentle morning sun on your face and the sea breeze in your hair. The sound of the waves gently crashing on the harbour wall create a real zen moment and I quickly switched off from any busy thoughts just concentrating on the slow, rhythmic movements of my body. Afterwards I recommend you head to the hotel patio to soak up the gorgeous beach views and refuel with a healthy, fresh breakfast buffet.

If you are looking for something a little more adventurous than yoga, then canyoning in nearby Benahavis will get your adrenaline pumping. Travel through the foothills of the mountains and experience unspoiled beauty. The canyons are made up of a series of beautiful rock passages carved and sculpted by water over millions of years. There is a mix of activity including swimming, jumping and abseiling using ropes cascading down white water chutes.

Canyoning was a bit too much for me so I decided to take it down a notch and experience some of the best views of the Costa Del Sol with a hike high up into the Andalusian mountains. There’s a number of trails you can take depending on how far you want to go. This experience is a must for those that enjoy nature and want to experience a perspective of Marbella that few often see. My guide collects me early in the morning and drives up towards the Sierra Blanca. It’s a clear day, the sun is shining so I’m guaranteed some epic views. I opted for the two-hour hike starting at Juanar and heading towards La Concha. The route loops round and takes in olive groves, walnut and pine trees and halfway in we are joined by a wild goat. As we hike further towards the top of the mountain the viewpoints get even better. On a clear day you can see the North African coastline and Gibraltar.

The fresh air and brisk hike left me with an appetite, so I made my way to Amare Beach Lounge for an al fresco lunch. Set on the beach, with a casual Mediterranean vibe the menu includes some tasty tapas staples as well as fresh salads and poke bowls. I went for a selection of traditional Andalusian tapas and a glass of Albarino.

All the hiking gave me a perfect excuse to hit the hotel spa and ease any aching muscles. The spa menu is centred around mind, body and spirit. It features some real treats like the Balance Concept Ritual, which combines an innovative therapy and massage to combat stress. I highly recommend the Sleep Ritual Massage, using essential oils and a range of holistic, calming and relaxing movements your mind and body instantly feel soothed and peaceful, perfect for the end of all long day.

If you are looking for a wellness break in the sunshine, then the Amare Beach Hotel is the perfect spot, reached in just two and a half hours from the UK, with daytime temperatures exceeding 20 degrees from April to October.

2020 is the year of MICRO – Making Incremental Changes to Reconnect Ourselves

A new year and decade welcome the opportunity to evaluate our wellness and identify new ways of boosting our mind, body and spirit. The wellness industry is booming and is set to continue trending well into 2020 as it’s no longer seen as a niche market. People are looking for ways to be their ‘best self’ and want simple techniques to incorporate wellness into their daily routines.

The last decade has been all about going hard and fast with the rise of HIIT and restrictive diets like Keto. But 2020 sees a shift in direction, with an increasing trend towards technology and personal experiences to enhance both our physical and emotional state. Global technology leader, Huawei, in partnership with trend intelligence experts, Stylus, has identified the most exciting wellness trend for the new decade – MICRO – Making Incremental Changes to Reconnect Ourselves.

This new approach to wellness focuses on making small, smart and simple adjustments to lifestyles with the help of the latest tech.

In 2020, hard core fitness regimes will be shunned for a softer and more holistic approach to wellness activities, underpinned by wearable technology to track vital statistics and audio experiences.

MICRO has been identified at a time when the complexities of balancing work and life, as well as the pressure to succeed, has caused increased millennial fatigue and burnout [1]. With new activities like HIIPA, mobile-meditation, micro-dosed nature, sound-baths and recovery-focused studios opening around Europe, it’s clear that a cultural shift towards wellbeing is on the horizon.

Those at the forefront of this wellness revolution are adopting a #GoMICRO way-of-life. Dr Frank Lipman, a pioneer and specialist in functional and integrative medicine, known for his celebrity clientele including, Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Arianna Huffington said: “HUAWEI has identified a shift away from the one-size-fits-all approach to wellness – which does not take our individual needs into account. The MICRO trend promotes a bespoke manageable regime that utilises technology and supports a desire for simple, integrated activities that produce real results.”

I like the sound of MICRO, mainly because it appears easy to stick to. I find that when we set ourselves big wellness changes they’re harder to sustain but because this trend encourages small and easy changes that weald big results you’re less likely to give up. MICRO is definitely the way forward for me.

To find out more about the MICRO trend and the drivers behind it head to https//consumer.huawei.com/uk/

[1] In May 2019, the World Health Organisation added burnout to its International Classification of Diseases – meaning that as of 2020, it will become a globally recognised occupational phenomenon.
