The time of year where we all set ourselves new, or as is often the case repeated, resolutions for the future is rapidly approaching once again. Some people may think that New Year’s resolutions are pretty pointless, but for many they help us reach or goals, or at least help to give us some direction. Modern day life is becoming increasingly fast paced, and we often don’t get time to reflect on how the past year has been for us until it comes to the very end. Christmas is often not only a break from work, but also a time to contemplate and regain inspiration for the coming year. However, sadly [before the first month of the year has even come to an end, most people have given up on their annual commitment to themselves. If you are determined to finally carry out your New Year’s resolutions this year, then here are some tips and tricks to help you out a little in 2020.

Be Realistic

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions failing, [part of the problem is that we often choose the most unrealistic goals as resolutions under the false assumption that we can just “be a completely different person” in the New Year. To be successful in sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, you must be both realistic and practical. For example, if you want to cut down your alcohol intake because you normally have a drink every day, then don’t resolve to go teetotal right away. Instead, try at first to only drink alcohol every second day, and continue to gradually cut back your consumption more and more until you are happy with the amount you are having. The same goes for becoming vegan or vegetarian, exercising and trying to eat more healthily. Try not to throw yourself in too deep, as you will most likely just put yourself off completely.

Have A Solid Plan

Having a good plan goes hand in hand with being realistic about your New Year’s resolution. If you want to get fit, then think practically about how you are going to do so. Maybe for the firsttwo weeks you aim to walk a mile each day. The second two weeks you could aim to run half the mile but then walk the rest. The third two weeks you could aim to run the entire mile. Having a plan, that is broken down into manageable chunks, will help you to take gradual steps towards achieving your overall goal.

Write Your Resolutions Down on Paper

Writing your goals down on paper can make you feel more accountable if you give up on them. Keep the piece of paper somewhere in sight, so you have a constant reminder of your goals and aspirations for the coming year. Sticking post-it notes around your home, on bathroom mirrors and above door handles is another great way of setting yourself inescapable prompts.

Tell A Friend

If a piece of paper isn’t going to make you feel accountable enough, then tell a close friend or family member about your New Year’s resolution, and about how you plan on realistically achieving it. Having a somebody to hold you accountable should help to further motivate you and prevent you from giving up at any point in your journey. Send your friend or family member a text or an email whenever you come closer to achieving your goal, to let them know how you are getting on.

New Year’s Resolution Bingo?!

This is without a doubt the most fun tip. This New Year’s, get yourself involved with “New Year’s Resolution” bingo. To play you simply download the bingo cards, which contain resolutions such as “spend less time on Social Media – “Just Let Me Post My NYE selfie first” or “Watch less TV/Netflix – “please, just one more episode?”. Every time you hear yourself, a friend, a colleague or a relative mention what they’re going to start doing, or give up, in the new year, simply check the resolution off the bingo card. This game should help you to stay in the “new year, new me” mood for much longer, and make dull old January much more fun. You can find the best bingo bonus here, and whether you’re really determined to keep your New Year’s resolution this time, or you just love bingo, this is a great game to play this January.

Keeping a New Year’s resolution is definitely one of those things that is much easier said than done. However, don’t let that put you off trying to achieve your goals and dreams in 2020. Any step in the right direction is always great and try to keep in mind that a New Year’s resolution doesn’t always have to be soblack and white.

Located by SouthBank arts centre, Sticky Mango is situated on a traditional London street amidst a series of gorgeous Victorian buildings. The 40-year stalwart was previously a French brasserie before adopting an Asian-influenced menu. In the 1950s, the building served as a stable, which you can sense from the arched and low ceilings of the basement area set to be transformed into a bar, lounge and events space in the near future.

Our waiter, Giovanni, informed us of these exciting plans as we wafted in and around various parts of the restaurant, including the terrace. Modest in size, the intimacy of the layout is comforting and ideal for London’s balmier nights.

The wooden beams and low lighting make the upstairs dining area feel soothing and relaxed despite the buzzing ambience—which was significantly busier than you’d assume for a regular Wednesday night.

We opted for the eight-course sharing menu made up of an array of fish and meat options. The Thai green mango salad, black pepper prawns and Malaysian chicken curry puffs were served on separate dishes in one flourish. Giovanni advised us to start with the puffs, which were light on the stomach, followed by the prawns and salad. The pepper prawns, which had a slight tang, were served with dehydrated pineapple and went down a treat as a pair. The pineapple somehow manages to calm the spice without getting rid of its initial kick. The salad then comes last to cleanse the palate, as personally recommended by Giovanni.

A food break might be necessary at this point, though we kept going—swigging sips of Sancerre. Next came the wok fried monkfish and tender stem broccoli, again as separate dishes followed by mamak chicken soaked in BBQ and truffle egg fried rice mixed with leeks and a subtle truffle paste. Though a tasting menu, these aren’t measly portions, made to share with an acquaintance who enjoys a variety of spices and flavours.

Then we had a break with the additional yet-to-be-named cocktail, a Vietnamese Martini concoction designed by Giovanni and his team. Part of the fun involves whisking the cocktail and watching it transform—though I will confess that the traditional Vietnamese condensed milk dominates the three shots of vodka which can be lethal. It’s sweet, so one is enough, especially when coupled with the eponymous sticky mango served with black sticky rice and mango sorbet.

My dining partner wasn’t so keen on the pandan macaron, which comes with soy sauce and caramel ice cream, so I willingly gobbled it down. The dessert is served like a bountiful green sandwich, so it’s best to eat it this way, and the ice cream acts as a buffer for its overt sweetness that could potentially become sickly if consumed in haste. In plain terms: take your time and, retrospectively, set a slow to medium tempo for a memorable meal.

KIMSU takes a philosophy that even the tiniest symbols, gestures, and experiences can ignite a passion within. Through handmade jewels and geometrical designs imitating symbols of strength, KIMSU pushes women to find the confidence to be themselves. Here, we go behind the brand with Roberto and Sue, the founders, to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
Roberto: We launched KIMSU in October 2017, but we started working on it end of 2016, the day Sue one morning called me saying “Roberto, I just quit my job!”. Indeed, she always had a passion for jewels and that day we decided to leave our old life behind and start this new adventure together, following our passions.

Whats your background?
Sue: My background is in Interior design and architecture. I worked as an interior designer more than 7 years across Korea, US, Italy and Germany.

Roberto: I worked in digital marketing for the past 7 years, but I grew up in an extremely entrepreneurial environment, with all my family members being entrepreneurs since 3 generations.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
Sue: I am a creative director – I design our jewellery pieces and all the graphic and visual parts and Roberto is our CEO, he is in charge of all the business and marketing aspects for KIMSU.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Roberto: putting all the pieces together. This was a relatively new world for us, so we had to learn how to do it while doing it. We truly loved the excitement, but at the same time, it has been challenging.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
Sue: For my 1st birthday, as per Korean tradition, I received as present a golden ring. I think that is where it all started!

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Roberto: being selected by Wolf & Badger for their Notting Hill store, being contacted by Vanity Fair and House of Coco of course!

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
Sue: probably NY, because I lived there for a year even though long time ago.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Sue: Lipstick, eyeliner and that’s about it.
Best thing about London to you?

Sue: Sherlock Holmes. Hahaha.

Roberto: How people are open-minded, and not scared of trying new things.

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?

Sue: I would go for a simple black dress; I think it perfectly matches my jewellery.

Favourite love song?
Sue: Hahaha. I don’t listen to love songs much but if I have to choose one, then… Chet Faker ‘ I’m into you’.

Roberto: Pink Floyd – Wish you were here.

Best place for a coffee?
Sue: I must say… Italy?! They have amazing espresso everywhere.

Roberto: You cannot ask this question to an Italian…

Guilty pleasure?
Sue: Sometimes listening to 90s pop. Love them!

Roberto: ahah, well, same as Sue!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Sue: In Bali

Roberto: on a space shuttle.

A wedding should be the best day of your life, but with all the pressure to get it just right, many brides end up feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately, there’s no need to take all of the pressure upon yourself. Here are some tips for reducing your stress and making your wedding preparations as pain-free as your big day.

Try to keep it organised

Not everything has to be organised to the minute, but if you find yourself not knowing what to do first, it can help to make a schedule. Plan out roughly when things should be organised, and remember to leave some room for a contingency! This will ensure you know what should be happening when while not meaning you need to stress every time something doesn’t happen exactly when it’s supposed to.

Book in meetings and wedding rehearsals as soon as possible, and make sure you get your venue early on in your planning so you know that’s sorted and which date to settle for. Make sure everyone else knows where they’re supposed to be, as well. If possible, it’s worth booking in rehearsals, as well: particularly for performance-based parts such as music, your dance, or the ceremony itself. This will ensure that everything runs smoothly when it comes to the big event. Those around you will thank you, as well, as they’ll know what they’re supposed to be doing and feel far less lost then they might have otherwise.

Make sure you delegate

You have bridesmaids for a reason! It’s important to make sure that you’re not taking everything upon yourself. At the very least, organising the hen party shouldn’t be your responsibility! Since your bridesmaids should be your friends, they’ll be more than willing to help you if you really need it. Although this is usually seen as being on the day, they should be willing to help beforehand, as well. Asking them to do small errands like pick up deliveries, offer opinions on choices, or even just offer emotional support is fine to do. It can make your big day a lot less stressful when you know you’ve got a team of people on your side.

Remember why you’re doing it

There’s a reason you agreed to get married: because you wanted to spend the rest of your life with the one you love. Sometimes it can help to be reminded of that amongst the stress of the big day. Remember to check in with your partner and reaffirm how you’re feeling: it should be an event you’re excited about, and sometimes reminding yourself why you’re doing it all is enough to take the stress away. Of course, it’s a team effort: you should make sure that you and your partner are sharing the workload and making decisions together, and communicating is the most important way to ensure everything is running as it should be. Keep the love at the heart of it all and everything should be fine.

Accept that things will go wrong

Inevitably, no day will ever be perfect. There will always be some kind of stress, whether it be with preparations, guests, or even your own nerves. The most important thing to remember is that this doesn’t mean your day can’t be, in your eyes, ideal. Accept that things are sometimes out of your control – it might rain, but you can’t control the weather! – and make the most of them whatever happens. Fortunately, you’ll probably be so swept up in love that the tiny things won’t matter: and that’s exactly how you have the wedding of your dreams.

Losing weight sure is a modern obsession. As we become more in-tune with our bodies and what is good – and not good – for us, change becomes essential. People who are now far more aware of the causes of their ill health want to do something about it. Finding out if you are healthy weight or not, though, can be tough. For years, the Body Mass Index (BMI) was the go-to solution to see if we were in proportion with our body weight.

Using a mixture that would calculate your body height with your weight, you can quickly learn how “healthy” you are under BMI grounds. However, please note that BMI is probably not the tool that we had once assumed when it comes to working out your weight. Let’s take a look at the BMI, why it was such a useful force for good and why, today, you might do well to look at BMI in a different light.

Why am I supposed to measure my BMI?

For many people, they measure BMI using a tool like the one from hcg injections, as they hear it is a good measure of weight control. If you were to suffer from excessive weight gain, then you might wish to know where you stand. For example, if the number that BMI throws at you comes out at around 18.5-24.9, then you can feel happy with it according to the metric. If you fall outside of either 18.5 (underweight) or 25 (overweight) then you are in a bit of a problem situation.

If you would like to avoid such a situation, then we recommend that you look to measure your BMI more intelligently. Just take the time to start looking after yourself and you will start to get a lot more out of your BMI in general. Many people will look to use this number to help determine every part of their lifestyle, but it’s vital to note that there are some serious limitations in the way that BMI operates. We’ll take a look at that in just a moment.

The general management of body weight, though, is that many of us want to see an arbitrary and easy to look at figure. If you can believe that one set of figures can give you the whole picture of your body, then it feels easy and convenient to believe in your BMI. However, it should be noted as clearly as is possible that BMI is not enough – for the reasons we will show you below.

Using it as a tool is not a bad idea, per se. However, if you choose to use it as your only tool then you are very much likely to suffer from a lack of clarity. Let’s look at some reasons why.

The limitations of the Body Mass Index

One of the most common reasons why you need to take a look at BMI with a skeptical view is that BMI does not take into account the importance of fat and muscle. This is not a system that pays attention to your fat or your muscle count. Naturally, this means that someone who has more muscle is going to be in the wrong category.

It’s an often used example, but super athletes in the past like Michael Jordan would have been in the wrong BMI count. They would have been ‘overweight’ as the average person is not cut to shreds with muscle and physical power. As such, since MI cannot differentiate, it can feel like a challenging solution to put all of your belief into.

By the same token, you will find that even those with low fat levels can be overweight according to the BMI. As well as it being the other way around. For example, you might not have a lot of body fat on arms, legs etc. but you could have a round belly. Belly fat is among the most dangerous fats and is likely to be suffocating and damaging organs.

According to your BMI, though, a relatively thin body with a belly would be fit so long as it was only around the belly. However, the longer you live with visceral fats the more likely you are to feel the stress and strain of being overweight. Put simply, BMI cannot take into account the lifestyle that you live.

You might feel fat but your BMI says otherwise. Just as you might feel in the shape of your life but your BMI will say that you have a lot of work to do. Either way, it’s lack of regard and context make it a dangerous tool from an analytical perspective.

So, should I stop following my BMI?

It depends. Alongside other weight management and weight accuracy tools, you can find out a lot using your BMI. However, for the reasons we mentioned until now, it is by no means a catch-all solution. Context is key, and knowing your BMI alone is not contextual enough. Instead, you need to spend a lot of time looking at your BMI and working out where the problems might lie.

For example, you might spend a lot of time trying to stay within the healthy category despite the fact you are actually quite unhealthy. This is a common problem, and one that many people suffer from – if you would like to avoid making such foolish mistakes, then you can do so with relative ease thanks to a change in mind-set.

Instead of using your BMI as a be-all solution, use it as a guiding light. If you merely want to lose weight then yes, it can be a useful tool. If you take part in just about any other kind of body change, though, you might find it hard to make the right kind of impact physically and mentally.

If you were to be carrying a lot of muscle, then it becomes too easy to read the numbers and feel frustrated at being ‘overweight’ for example. As ever, use your BMI as a guiding solution but never the be-all and end-all.

The term ‘superfoods’ has been thrown around a lot of late as we have watched the emergence of produce such as sweet potato, kale and quinoa. However, healthy eating can often be extremely costly. To be classed as a superfood, a product must include a high quantity of nutritional value and antioxidants, but are they really worth it?

Here, we look at five so-called superfoods and debate whether they are indeed all they’re made out to be.

Quinoa

Many often mistake this nutritionally powerful seed for a grain. Featuring all 10 essential amino acids, quinoa is understood to be a complete protein which can help your muscles repair. Due to it being a complex carbohydrate, offering 46 grams each cup, it provides longer lasting energy.

It is also gluten free and has a higher fibre content compared to most grains. Unfortunately, though, it’s not all soluble fibre. It has a low glycemic index which can help be part of a lower calorie intake. With many believing quinoa is an expensive commodity, a quick and easy cheap recipe is spinach and mushroom quinoa.

Avocado

The taste and texture of an avocado has seen it quickly rise in popularity. It’s becoming more of a major player in restaurant menus due to its easily adaptable approach to recipes. It offers a host of vitamins, including A, C, D, E and K, as well as folic acid, magnesium, potassium, Omega 3, lutein, and fibre.

Although it is argued to be a greasy fruit, the majority of its grease is omega 3 type and can aide cholesterol lowering to prevent heart disease. The grease can be used instead of butter or oil when cooking and the actual flesh can also be used to create hair and face masks. Super, right? While it can be produced in forms including soups, juice, toast, salads, and smoothies, a cheap way to incorporate avocado into your diet is by creating a budget brunch of guacamole bread that can cost as little as 76p a head.

Sardines

Your body will feel the benefits of this little nutrient powerhouse that provides a strong scent. They can go a long way in helping to reduce inflammation and promoting bone, heart, and skin health. A single can of sardines contains more calcium than a glass of cow’s milk — 300mg! As well as this they are high in vitamin D and, like avocado, have a great omega 3 fatty acid profile. Some of its great qualities include immune-boosting properties due to its high amount of selenium. This is normally found on its skin, so don’t go skinning this fish! The skin also helps your skin, aiding conditions such as psoriasis.

This superfood is a delight for the bank balance too. A recipe to rely on could be fresh sardines on toast with sweet pickled red onion.

Mango

Known for being a quick-digesting carbohydrate, the mango offers 25 grams per one cup serving. It’s bursting at the seams with over 20 vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and is thought by many to be one of the tastiest ways to support a healthy lifestyle. The fruit can rapidly boost your energy at a time when your body needs it. If you don’t want to eat a mango as is, why not try a chicken mango salad? A great way to get the most out of the mango in a tasty, light and cheap dinner.

Sweet potato

Jam-packed with carbohydrates, minerals and antioxidants, the sweet potato is another powerhouse of nutrients and a great source of potassium. This, according to studies, aids muscle tissue repair and can help prevent fatigue in your muscles. Their fibre content is higher than the average potato and, when combined with the likes of magnesium, the sweet potato can help improve your digestion. Elsewhere, they are an effective remedy to curing congestion of the nose, which can help relieve asthma and treat bronchitis. Other benefits are said to include a boosted immune system, helping to cure stomach ulcers, and maintaining the body’s water balance.

While they can be costlier compared to the usual spud, like their less-healthy counterpart, they are simple to grow. Why not set up your own patch with vegetable seeds and a potato patch? Save money and switch to a healthier potato: what’s not to love? For a tasty recipe look no further than the old staple shepherd’s pie. Simply replace the normal mashed potato topping with sweet potato and you’re onto a winner!

It certainly looks like these superfoods are here for the long run. With so much goodness to offer, they don’t have to be part of an expensive recipe and by researching meals, you can incorporate into your diet without adding too much cost to your weekly shop.

This article will look at whether organic really is better and also list meals that the superfoods can be used in to avoid the costs spiralling.

This week I caught up with actress and girl boss Victoria Ekanoye to discuss her busy schedule as an actress her charity work and how she maintains that perfect balance and most importantly how she likes to switch off from the world – take an insight into her world!

1) Tell us about your favourite holiday destination?

Ah you’ve started with a tough one! I’ve been so lucky to see so much of the world in my line of work, but Koh Samui, Thailand is probably up there with one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. The people are so warm and accommodating, and the food is incredible. Fresh coconuts chopped from the tree every morning is definitely an indulgence I could get used to!

2) You live a fast pace life – with your work between the US, France and the U.K. – what are your beauty regime essentials that you can’t deal without?

With stage/screen make up being an almost daily part of my job, I’d say that regardless of the products, cleansing your skin at night (especially taking off your make up) so that your skin can breathe and heal, is a must! I have an amazing beautician, Claire Hayhurst, at Blush in Rawtenstall and she has recently introduced me to Environ, Skin EssentiA, so I’m currently trialling that. As a basic rule, I drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day, try to get 8 hours sleep every night and have recently cut out dairy, which I’d say has made the biggest different to my whole body.

3) Tell us about your charity work? And why you’re so passionate about it?

I suppose this is how many people feel, but our family seems to have been dealt more than its fair share of illnesses, it’s been really tough. I’m extremely grateful for the aid we’ve received and just feel that with whatever influence I’m fortunate to have, I want to use it to help those who’ve helped us. I’m currently working on projects with Sickle Cell Care Manchester, The Rossendale Hospice and The Christie to help raise funds for the incredible, selfless work they do.

4) We live in a social media age – how do you switch off?

I like to take long baths with essential oils, candles and music. It’s nice to be able to switch off from the constant pinging of a mobile phone and to try and unclog your mind of the days stresses. I fall asleep to guided mediation most nights which really helps to reset my mind for the next day.

5) How did you get into acting?

Well, I didn’t exactly train the conventional way; we couldn’t afford as a family for me to attend the expensive drama schools, but I loved to perform, so I had a rather fanciful childhood of make believe and was constantly asking my family to watch whatever ‘entertainment’ I’d cooked up that week!

I think training in musical theatre is pretty vital as it equips you with technique to fall back on, especially when doing 8 shows a week. Tv and Film work, I feel, leaves a little more scope for raw talent. I struggled initially, feeling I would always be at disadvantage, but then I realised with age that the benefit of not training forced me to really trust my instincts and that in turn stopped me from overthinking the scene and allowed me to develop the character naturally.

I’m a singer first and foremost and so my career began in The Lion King. I went to an open audition and luckily they took a chance on me. It truly was a life changing experience and I couldn’t be more grateful for the lessons I learnt there. That was a pivotal point in my career and life and I’ll always have a place in my heart for the people and the show.

6) Any tips for young actresses trying to make it?

Get as much experience as you can (paid or unpaid), trust your instincts and never stop learning. My very first Lion King director, Alex Sumner Hughes, suggested I try a few classes at The Actors Centre in Covent Garden, London and it ignited a little flame in belly for the tiny but vital subtleties in screen acting; the micro expressions, active listening, reacting…it made me want to film as much as possible so that I could watch my scenes back and really be honest with myself, work out what my strengths and my weaknesses were.

I found it so important to be able to self critique, it enabled me to find my niche, but it was also really important to be able to take others’ constructive criticism, both actors and non actors.

We aren’t always aware of how we come across and I really feel that your perspective must always be challenged in order for you to learn and grow. Plus you may be really funny and missing out on a career as the new Robin Williams, but not know it!
Last, but probably most important – don’t be disheartened by a ‘No’. A ‘No’ is just an opinion, opinions are subjective and that one person’s taste may completely differ from the next. This is your dream, not theirs, so don’t give them the power to put out that fire in your belly…persevere.

7) We also heard that you like to sing! Tell us more about that!

Haha, I’m sure I drove my family and friends insane as a a little girl singing Whitney around the house. My mum loved her and I was just blown away by the command she had over her instrument. She was the reason I started singing and all I knew how to do was mimic her. My mum once entered me into local Stars in Their Eyes competition without telling me and I won singing ‘I Will Always Love You’. I think that was the point where I thought..hmmm maybe I’m not too bad at this!! I used to write a lot, which I always promised myself I would pick up again, but I never imagined I would end up in Musical Theatre as I had a crippling fear of acting.

The Lion King knocked that right out of me! You’re on stage, 6 nights a week, in front of over 2000 people, in one of the biggest shows in the world and you’re surrounded by such incredible talent…it is terrifying. But, you learn fast and you grow and ultimately you know that you don’t get to say ‘sorry guys, I messed up, can we just do that bit again. It’s live! So you just have to throw yourself in the deep end and trust yourself. It was my training and one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. At the moment, whilst working on tv, I don’t get to sing as much as I’d like, but when I’m lucky enough it’ll be jazz, the blues and every now and then a little rock!

8) What does sickle cell mean to you – and as an ambassador of the charity – what more can we do for awareness

Unfortunately, Sickle Cell is an illness that a lot of people suffer from, but not a lot of people know about. Simply put, it’s a severe form of anaemia. Best case scenario, you’re extremely lucky and don’t suffer too badly from the symptoms, are able to live a relatively normal life and are lucky enough to have children; maybe even see them have children. Worst case scenario, you can be on life time medication, become bed ridden, require regular blood transfusions, life saving operations, sometimes amputations and sadly, it can be fatal.

More than anything, because the doctors are already working brilliantly, I want to really help raise awareness of the condition and subsequently more funds, in order to enrich the lives of those suffering.

9) You seem like the perfect Girl Boss, everything we love at House of Coco – but girl bosses have a lot to balance – how do you manage your time – and how do you stay focused?

My calendar is my saviour! The minute I’m asked to do something, arrange anything, it goes straight in and gets checked regularly. There are a million positives to being a part of the entertainment industry, we’re extremely fortunate, but one of the few negatives is that you can’t really plan ahead with your loved ones.

My schedule can get really hectic and there isn’t a lot of routine as filming schedules can change last minute, so you just have to get good at dealing with change. Meditation and training come hand in hand and really help me to focus on the task at hand rather than allowing my mind to wander. My trainer, Lisa Latona, at Nuffield Health really pushes me and helps me step outside my comfort zone, which in turn equips me to be mentally stronger and take on whatever fun new challenge life throws into the mix!

10) It is so important to have ‘Me Dates’ what do you do in your spare time just to treat yourself and take care of your soul?

They say ‘home is where the heart is’, so flying to my home in Villefranche Sur Mer is all the soul healing I need. There’s nothing like getting off the plane, feeling that warm air on your skin, that distinctive scent of the Mediterranean and being greeted by the big grin on my partner’s face. Cheesy, I know, but life is for living and I intend to love unashamedly.

Family really is everything and when we get the chance we like to take trip to The Woodland spa in Burnley, I challenge anyone to leave not feeling like they’ve had a reboot! Lastly, my closest friends keep me sane and there’s no better feeling than laughing until your stomach hurts, which we do regularly, so spending time with them is always therapeutic.

11) The best place you’ve eaten?

Ah this is so hard, I’m such a foodie! I’m not sure I can choose as I ate at some incredible places before progressing to a plant based diet and although there are more and more options in restaurants now, I still prefer to cook at home for friends and family. My favourite cuisine is Thai, but I have to be a little reserved with the chillies when cooking for others, as I like it very very spicy.

12) What’s in your bag?

Haha, erm…depends on where I’m going! I guess on a normal day I’ll always have water, hand cream/san’, car/housekeys, my bank card, chewing gum, my fave perfume Absolutey Blooming by Dior and a red lipstick in case it turns into an evening affair.

13) What are you listening to?

My taste in music has become quite eclectic over the years, purely because of the different genres I’ve needed to research for work. Besides Sade, whom I can listen to whatever the weather, it often depends on my mood. I love the Blues and trip hop artists like Portishead, but then I love the high energy of a Basement Jaxx track. My fave ‘newer’ artists are London Grammar, JP Cooper, Ry X and Jack Garrat, but my song obsession at the moment is ‘Eclipse’ by Joseph Lawrence and The Garden. Love love love that kind of vocal. Having said all that, you can never go wrong with Tina and MJ!

If you don’t do an IG story of the whole thing, did you even go on holiday?

Technology is as much a part of our downtime these days as it is our working life, with the pressure to show everyone just how much fun we’re having 24/7.

The pressure to get the perfect Aperol boomerang can, eventually, get too much. Everyone needs a break – and what better way to do it than to go on a proper digital detox?

But don’t go thinking that binning your phone can only be done at some remote hippy enclave which you wouldn’t want to snap anyway.

These days, digital detoxes take place in luxury hotels and retreats with enough comfort to make you forget all about your group WhatsApp.

1. Argoed Barns, Wales

Bunker down in one of a trio of luxury semi and self-catering accommodation in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.

Argoed Barns is three miles from Brecon and just under three hours away from London, so you can get away from the thick of it without going too far.

You’ll be too busy taking in all the breathtaking scenery to be fussed about Facebook. After a day out in the hills, sink into a glorious hot tub with views to die for – complete with a handy ledge for your wine glass. If you’ve got the energy, nip down the road for dinner at local foodie haven, Felin Fach Griffin. Just don’t be tempted to log onto the WiFi!

Choose to stay in a self-catering boutique cottage, a B&B Shepherd’s Hut or a self-catering luxury Geodome.

Prices start at £230 based on two nights in the Shepherd’s Hut (children and pets aren’t allowed). Kids and pets are welcome to stay in the Byre or Geodome (it’s an extra £15 for animals).

‘Switch off our phones. Lay down your schedules. Let go of your daily routine.’ That’s the mantra at Yobaba Lounge so you best believe that this is a no-Instagram zone.

Set in the middle of a medieval village at the foothills of the Pyrenees, Yobaba has been hosting vegan wellness retreats since 2013. When retreats aren’t in session, they offer a three-night stay in their digital-free space for anyone in need of a break.

Every day, guests are invited to experience Noble SIlence – short periods of quiet in which people can investigate their ‘true nature’ and reconnect with their surroundings. Formal retreats require silence from 8.30pm to noon the next day but anyone coming for a self-retreat is asked to simply stay silent from the moment they wake up until breakfast at 10am.

Retreat places start at £875 pp sharing a double room or from £1,250 alone in a large double room for 4 nights, including all food and drink and three meditations a day.

£80pp for a room outside of retreat season.

There’s no electricity and life ‘is lived by the rhythm of the day’ – with rooms and paths lit by lamps and lanterns. It’s romance is enhanced by being located at the foot of the Galgiriyawa mountain, bordered by lotus-ringed lakes and emerald green paddy fields.

Go for the yoga, stay for the R ‘n’ R with the onsite ayurveda experiences. Choose from a host of dreamy treatments that last from three to 28 days with names like ‘Happiness’, ‘Satisfaction’ and ‘Redemption’.

Prices start at around £1,325 per person (www.ulpotha.com), for seven nights including all food and snacks, two yoga classes a day, guided forest walks, excursions, bikes, laundry, and one massage a week.

5. El Silencio Lodge & Spa, Costa Rica

As the name might suggest, this Costa Rica paradise is all about slowing down and getting rid of unnecessary noise. It touts itself being one of the most secluded and tranquil hotels in the country with torch-lit forest dinners and an extensive array of spa treatments.

There’s no phone signal, WiFi or TV in the sustainable eco-lodge but with views across 500 acres of jungle, you won’t be short of things to stare in awe at.

If you do need extra stimulation, they offer a tonne of activities, including ziplining, coffee-tasting, hot springs, hikes, and cookery classes.

For a digital detox, stay in a suite in the lodge rather than in a villa (which does have WiFI), and enjoy a private viewing deck with a heating jet pool, coffeemaker, and local organic products.

Suites from $420 per night for two adults, including breakfast and daily Mystic Hike.

Many men have plenty of pairs of shoes that they can wear for different occasions. One of the most popular pairs of shoes that every man should own is a pair of brogues. Here, we are going to tell you how you can wear a pair of brogues. Keep reading if you’d like to find out more.

The Pattern

When you are looking for a pair of brogues for men, you need to think carefully about the pattern that you are going to pick. There are a few different types that you can choose from and it is important that you know what sort of pattern is on your brogues in order to wear them properly. If you have a quarter brogue then you will find that they are the easiest to style as the pattern is quite simple. On the other hand, a semi-brogue is in between the quarter brogue and the full brogue with a little more detail. The final type of pattern that you could go for is the full brogue which has a lot more detail. You might find that this type of brogue is also called a wingtip so make sure to look out for variations on this.

What To Wear

If you have a pair of brogues that are either quarter brogues or semi-brogues, you will find that they are quite smart looking. This means that you should try to wear them with your smart clothing such as chinos, denim or smarter trousers. A belt often goes really well with brogues and this should always be matching. If you’d like to wear shorts with your brogues you should make sure that they are tailored and that you pair them with a short sock.

Wearing Wingtips

Wingtips are also a very popular style of brogue as they are a little more classic. If you have a pair of these then you might want to pair them with a classic suit and if your suit is grey, then you should always go with brown wingtips. This is a great way of giving your boring suits a little bit more life and turning it into a much more stylish outfit. Think about dressing up your wingtips a lot more than your semi-brogues or your quarter brogues as they tend to have a lot more detail.

Smart Casual

If you are headed somewhere that has a smart casual dress code, then you’ll find that brogues can work perfectly. Think about teaming your brogues up with a pair of smart jeans and this will help you to achieve the perfect smart casual look. In terms of colour, it is a lot better to go with lighter brown brogues if you want to match them with your jeans. This will give you the perfect smart casual look that you have been hoping for.

Final Verdict

If you are planning on investing in a pair of brogues or would like to know what you could wear your current pair with then make sure to take on board all of the tips that we have given you. You should remember that there are three main types of brogues so choose the one that best suits your style. Don’t be afraid to get yourself a few different pairs so that you can have a pair of semi-brogues, quarter brogues and wingtips in your wardrobe. Remember to dress them up a little with your clothing and you should be able to have the perfect outfit for any occasion.
