Based in Kent, Kerry provides a professional but personal interior design service and believes that the key to meeting her clients’ needs and aspirations is to be a good listener and by paying close attention to detail. Kerry has a love of nature and wildlife and these elements often play a part in the inspiration for her designs.
Here, she chats to us at House of Coco and tells us more about her hopes and aspirations for the brand in the future…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
It was around a year ago. After having left my job in London, several years previously, I decided that I wanted a complete change of direction and I studied interior design, whilst working on a part time basis. I have always loved interiors, architecture and art & design and I felt that the time was right to build a career in something I really loved doing and leave office work behind.
What’s your background?
I commuted to London from Kent for many years and worked for international law firms. I think my background taught me to have an eye for detail, having proof read so many legal documents in my time!
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
In hindsight I would certainly have taken the plunge and entered the design world when I was younger. I didn’t realise how stifled my creative side had been until I had the time to visit trade shows and network with other designers, away from the daily 9 to 5 grind.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
I guess the hardest challenge is dispelling the myth that hiring an interior designer means taking out a second mortgage! I believe this service should be accessible to anyone who wants a unique home and shouldn’t be seen as a luxury for only the wealthy. As I work from home, I don’t have the overheads that a London studio may have and a good designer should work with your budget, even if it is a smaller one. Great design can add value to your property and I believe, boost your wellbeing.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I have a black belt in Kaizendo, which is a form of kickboxing.
Which city do you feel more at home in, London, Paris of New York?
London. I know it very well having worked there for many years and although I don’t miss the daily commute, I do miss having the luxury shops, theatre and restaurants on the doorstep. Of course, I still visit London and I enjoy going there more, now that I don’t have to commute into the City every day.
Injecting your own personality into what you wear, how you wear it and of course, the space in which you live.
Statement shoe or statement bag?
Definitely a statement bag. I could quite happily purchase a different one every week or two!
Favourite love song?
That is a hard question to answer as I have a few favourites but if I had to choose an artist it would be George Michael, as I am a huge fan. He is such a talented singer/songwriter and I absolutely love his voice, so any one of his songs would be up there.
If you could spend 24 hours anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Africa. It is arguably my favourite continent for its beautiful scenery and fantastic wildlife. It is such a thrill seeing the ‘big five’ in their natural habitat, roaming wild and free. Long may that continue.
