The Borough Broth Company was inspired by one of Ros Heathcote’s regular visits to Borough Market back in May 2015.
Ros had recently embarked on a personal journey of discovery related to nutrition and health. She had read about bone broth and believed that it could be a key element in helping her reduce her allergies whilst also improving her hair, skin, nails and general health. Here, she talks to House of Coco and tells us more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I was struggling with allergies and poor health last year. I couldn’t seem to stop catching colds, my skin was bad, my energy was at an all time low and I kept reacting to different products and foods after never suffering allergies before and I often felt anxious and stressed. This wasn’t a normal state for me. So after speaking to a Nutritionist I decided to research the link of gut health with overall health and try to heal myself from the inside out. Bone Broth was something I had been making for years, and was a big part of my return to health. Once I realised how difficult it was to source decent bones and what a pain it is for people to cook something for 24 hours I decided to start a company making the stuff!
Whats your background?
I have a bizarre background really. I’ve been working in IT as a professional for the past 8 years. My university degree was in Music Production (I wanted to become a Singer/Songrwriter/Producer but that soon fell by the wasteside as I went into full time employment). That being said I’ve been working in the catering industry off and on since I was 14 and food has and always will be a huge passion of mine. The end goal was always to work in food in some way.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
Currently for my company Borough Broth Company Ltd it’s just me. That is just me as an official director/employee. I subcontract many tasks out such as illustration, design, branding, and the manufacturing I do in partnership with another company in London. I am involved in every area though and make the final decisions on everything. I hope eventually I will be able to partner and grow with others. So far the business is up, ready to produce and it’s all done in the UK. We’re ready to scale quickly whilst maintaining the highest quality, so I don’t expect it to be just me for long!
If you could start over with the business would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have hesitated, almost every gut instinct so far has been correct.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since starting the company?
I went into this not knowing anything about manufacturing or the food retail industry, the hardest challenge is the bureaucracy there are so many different companies, governmental bodies, and affiliates you need to apply, inform and conform to. It has definitely made me appreciate other Organic manufacturers out there and the efforts they make to ensure their products are of the highest standard.
Tell us one fact about you people wouldnt know.
I used to own a set of decks and had big dreams to become a HipHop DJ.
To Date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Oh being featured in Coco-Loves 😉
Which city do you feel most at home, London, Paris or New York?
London is home right now, but after spending a lot of time visiting my sister in New York I could definitely live in Brooklyn without much persuasion!
Three Beauty Products you wouldn’t leave the house without?
I’ve become obsessed with the Brand RMS Beauty; a Hollywood based company that makes all of it’s products from Coconut Oil. I have the lip and cheek tint and the un-coverup that I used as a light foundation. Finally I rarely leave the house without adding a couple of flicks with Dior Addict Eyeliner.
Best thing about London to you?
The diversity, it makes for some amazing food!
Statement shoe or statement bag?
I love a good handbag has to be said! But my wardrobe would say shoes every time.
If you had to, which piece of clothing would you wear everyday?
I’ve become addicted to my topshop white shirts with tortoiseshell buttons. I liked it so much I bought two!
Favourite Love Song?
I went to Music College for my Bachelors, and I have to say most of my choices would be deemed quite odd. But prototype by Outkast has to be a beauty for me.
Best Place for a Coffee?
Depends what you mean by best, I’m more of a tea (or a broth!) drinker to be honest, recently discovered the Buttery in Hampstead. Pretty little outside rickety tables hidden away to have a bit of tea and cake.
Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Fake it till you make it!
Millionaire Matchmaker, *sigh*.
If you could spend 24 hours anywhere in the world where would it be?
In California with my Gorgeous Niece and Nephew.
In future how do you plan on expanding the company?
By adding our ranges to quality stockists across the country. I want this product to be come available to as many people as possible as I truly believe it will help many people’s overall health.
There are also some new products coming out soon, so watch this space!
