A Craft Beer Bar with a Vegetarian Indian Street Food Kitchen

Bundobust started as a collaboration between award winning institutions Prashad (Gordan Ramsay’s Great British Restaurant finalists) and The Sparrow Bier cafe (The Guardian’s Top 10 UK Craft Beer Bars) in April 2013.

After a handful of successful and sold out food and beer pairing events it was decided that a permanent home should be found. In July 2014 Bundobust opened its doors on Leeds’ Mill Hill, a once derelict street that is slowly being brought back to life.

Our Lifestyle Editor, Jo Jessop visited Bundobust – not a restaurant, but a bar that sells Indian street food alongside an extensive selection of the world’s best craft beer.

There is a “No Beef” sign proudly displayed above the bar. “You do not miss the meat, the flavours are incredible and the dishes extremely filling! It was all delicious! Our favourites were the Bundo Chaat – a samosa pastry, chickpea, potato, tamarind chutney, yoghurt and turmeric noodle and also the Okra Fries.”

The venue and presentation is simple, with use of recycled materials which add to the relaxed atmosphere. Guests are greeted by a selection of wooden doors that hang on the walls inside the entrance… it is like opening the door from Leeds to India.  “I attended with friends who said the food reminded them of their travels in India (not just the flavour, but the texture!) The food certainly is influenced by the vibrant street food scene of India.”

If you are sampling the food, it should be washed down with hoppy India Pale Ales, a classic beer style that was originally brewed in England and shipped to the troops in times of The Raj. However, if Indian ales are not for you… don’t despair… wine and cocktails are also available!

Prices ranged from £2.50 to £6 and all of the food choices are vegetarian and/or gluten-free. On arrival the pots don’t appear that large, however, four dishes are enough for two people to share for dinner.

Bundobust is the perfect setting for a chilled night with friends, catching up and unwinding.  The community spirit is evident.

“We had a great night and we will certainly be back! Just need a few more cushions!”
