You can’t make our forefathers proud if you don’t party like it’s 1776 on the 4th of July. Ok, maybe don’t literally party like it’s 1776, but you get the point. The 4th of July is a time to take pride in our nation and celebrate its many accomplishments. You can’t throw just any party; your celebration needs to be worthy of an appearance from legendary party animal Ben Franklin. If you’re ready to host the patriotic get-down of the century, here are some tips on how to have the best 4th of July possible.

Fire Works
Sadly, not every state allows for fireworks due to the risk of forest fires. However, if your state doesn’t have any bans, fireworks are an absolute must for any 4th of July celebration. Fun for both kids and adults, pyrotechnics bring a certain level of excitement and joy to everyone’s life. Head down to the pop-up tent at Walmart and grab groundhogs, sparklers, Roman candles, and anything else you can get your hands on.

Dress for the Occasion
Don’t wear just anything on the 4th; deck yourself out in every piece of American flag garb the internet has to offer. American flag shirts are a must for both guys and girls this July. How will people know how much you love America if your clothes don’t say it for you? Adorn yourself in an American flag cape and a fuzzy red, white, and blue top hat for a silly and fun look.

Fire up the Grill
A 4th of July celebration isn’t complete without some killer grub hot off the grill. Don’t settle for hot dogs and hamburgers; spice things up with kabobs and ribs. Grab some fresh vegetables from the farmers market to satisfy the vegetarian guests that plan on joining you—nothing beats freshly grilled corn on the cob with lots of butter and a little parmesan cheese.

Pro tip: Request that your guests chip-in with some side dishes and desserts. You can’t be expected to supply all of the amenities for the celebration. Make sure you remind your cousin Jared that bringing his beer pong table does not count as a party contribution (while it is needed).

Cocktails
Your potent potables need to be a cut above the rest. This is the 4th of July; not some office Christmas party. What kind of alcohol should you serve? All of them, duh (except maybe gin because it’s British and kind of tastes like a pine tree smells). Keep in mind, putting out a spread of random boos and mixers simply won’t due if you want to celebrate the birth of our nation properly.

Consider concocting cocktails with red and blue food coloring for that added patriotic zest to your spirits. Blueberries and strawberries make for the perfect garnish to all of your festive drinks. Why not serve them in mason jars so you can show off the color scheme of your festive beverages?

Activities
Horseshoes, beer pong, and corn hole are the perfect activities for any 4th of July BBQ. However, you should come up with some activities for the youngsters (and young at heart) who show up to your celebration as well.

While you’re shopping at the grocery store for food supplies, pick up a few packs of water balloons too! Grab some sidewalk chalk and mark off a section of your cul-de-sac for an epic game of water balloon dodgeball. The rules are the same, but instead of red rubber balls you’ll use water balloons.

Decorations
It’s always the fine details that pull a celebration together. American flag plates, napkins, and wreaths are a great way to kick your party up a notch. Are you throwing a garden party? Take a look at the latest flag poles and flags to fly high outside your home! This way, it will be clear to your neighbours, passers-by, and guests just what you are celebrating! Who says desserts can’t double as décor? Make some American flag cupcakes and fruit spreads! Consider throwing in some white chocolate-dipped pretzels or coconut macarons to make the white stripes in your American flag fruit spread.

Throwing a pool party this 4th of July? Order a bald eagle inflatable and some red, white and blue pool noodles as well.
